Mechanism for nearly ohmic behavior in annealed Au/n-GaAs Schottky diodes

The mechanism of the ohmic behavior commonly observed after annealing Au/n-GaAs 110-oriented Schottky diodes was investigated using electron-beam-induced current (EBIC) measurements, secondary electron imaging (SEI), and SEM and TEM observations. The results showed that the ohmic behavior of annealed Schottky diodes originates from a shunt current pathway at the diode periphery. The SEI, EBIC, and electrical measurements indicated that the ohmic leakage current is due to the surface recombinations at the exposed surface of GaAs between elongated Au crystallites.

An investigation of the thermal cycling damage of 25 vol. pct SiCw/alumina ceramic matrix composite

An investigation was made of the thermal cycling damage of a 25 vol pct SiC whisker/alumina (SiCw/Al2O3) composite. Thermal cycling tests were conducted by subjecting a composite specimen to two different fluidized beds. After thermal cycling the composite specimens were subjected to elastic modulus and effective fracture toughness measurements. The thermal cycled specimens were investigated with SEM and TEM studies. It was found that this composite has a relatively high resistance to thermal cycling.

Observations on the brittle to ductile transition temperatures of B2 nickel aluminides with and without zirconium

The effect of a zirconium addition (0.05 at. pct) to a stoichiometric NiAl alloy on the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature (BDTT) of this alloy was investigated. Constant velocity tensile tests were conducted to fracture between 300 and 1100 K under initial strain rate 0.00014/sec, and the true stress and true strain values were determined from plots of load vs time after subtracting the elastic strain. The inelastic strain was measured under a traveling microscope. Microstructural characterization of as-extruded and fractured specimens was carried out by SEM and TEM. It was found that, while the addition of 0.05 at. pct Zr strengthened the NiAl alloy, it increased its BDTT; this shift in the BDTT could not be attributed either to variations in grain size or to impurity contents. Little or no room-temperature ductility was observed for either alloy.

Crack initiation and growth toughness of an aluminum metal-matrix composite

The effects of systematic changes in matrix microstructure on crack initiation and growth toughnesses were determined on an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy containing 0, 15, 20 percent by volume of SiC particulates. Materials were heat treated to underaged (UA) and overaged (OA) conditions of equivalent matrix microhardness and flow stress. Although both the fracture initiation and growth toughnesses, as measured by JIc and tearing modulus, were similar for the unreinforced materials in the UA and OA conditions, significant effects of microstructure on both JIc and tearing modulus were observed in the composites. SEM and TEM observations of fracture paths in the two conditions are utilized to rationalize these observations in light of existing theories of ductile fracture propagation.

Aqueous alteration in the Kaba CV3 carbonaceous chondrite

Results from TEM and SEM examinations of the Kaba CV3 carbonaceous chondrite are presented, showing that the chondrules and the matrix of Kaba have undergone pervasive low-temperature aqueous alteration, resulting in the formation of Fe-bearing saponite from glass and enstatite in chondrules, and from anhydrous silicates in matrix. The alteration products in Kaba were found to resemble those in other aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrites such as the Mokoia CV3 and in Orgueil CI chondrites and Y-82162 chondrites. However, Kaba lacks the abundant high-Al phyllosilicates, reported for CAIs from Mokoia, and the serpentine and ferrihydrite, found in Orgueil.

Fracture of single crystals of the nickel-base superalloy PWA 1480E in helium at 22 C

The fracture behavior and deformation of He-charged (at 22 C) single crystals of PWA 1480E Ni-base superalloy were investigated using SEM and TEM techniques to observe the behavior of tensile fractures in notched single crystals with seven different crystal growth orientations: 100-line, 110-line, 111-line, 013-line, 112-line, 123-line, and 223-line. To identify the cleavage plane orientation, a stereoscopic technique, combined with the use of planar gamma-prime morphologies, was applied. It was found that gamma-prime particles were orderly and closely aligned with edges along the 100-line, 010-line, and 001-line-oriented directions of the gamma matrix. Different crystal growth orientations were found not to affect the morphology of gamma-prime particles. The accumulation of dislocations around gamma/gamma-prime interfaces formed strong barriers to subsequent dislocation movement and was the primary strengthening mechanism at room temperature.

Hydrogen environment effects on beryllium and titanium aluminides

The NASP program has intensively studied the hydrogen-environment embrittlement (HEE) susceptibility of Be, alpha(2)-Ti3Al, and gamma-TiAl. Tensile tests are being conducted on candidate aerospace structure and propulsion candidate materials from each of the three groups, at temperatures in the -130 to +204 C range, in both 0.1 MPa and 13.8 MPa He and H2 environments, using SEM and TEM to discern the details of environmental effects. It has been established that while alpha(2) Ti3Al is HEE-susceptible even in the room-temperature and 13.8 MPa environment, neither Be nor gamma-TiAl are susceptible, even at the highest temperature tested.

Substrate effects on the epitaxial growth of ZnGeP2 thin films by open tube organometallic chemical vapor deposition

Epitaxial ZnGeP2-Ge films have been grown on (111)GaP substrates using MOCVD. The films grown with dimethylzinc to germane flow rate ratio R greater than 10 show mirror-smooth surface morphology. Films grown with R less than 10 show a high density of twinning, including both double position and growth twins. Compared to films grown on (001) GaP substrates, the layers on (111) GaP generally show a higher density of microstructural defects. TEM electron diffraction patterns show that the films grown on (111) GaP substrates are more disordered than films grown on (001) GaP under comparable conditions. The growth rate on (111) GaP substrates is about 2.5 times slower than that on (001) GaP, and films grown on Si substrates show extensive twinning formation. Both TEM and SEM examinations indicate that smooth epitaxial overgrowth may be easier on (111) Si substrates than on (001) Si.

Containerless processing and rapid solidification of Nb-Si alloys of hypereutectic composition

A combination of bulk undercooling in an electromagnetic levitation apparatus and splat quenching between two copper plates is used to process Nb-Si alloys in order to maximize rapid solidification conditions and minimize the effects of recalescence, with emphasis on the solidification of characteristics of alloys in the 21 to 27 at. pct Si range of composition. SEM and TEM as well as X-ray diffraction are used to characterize the microstructures of the processed samples. In the range of compositions studied, the splat-quenched drops always formed the tetragonal Nb3Si phase directly from the liquid. Drops solidified in the coil were characterized by the presence of the primary intermetallic Nb5Si3 and the absence of both peritectic Nb3Si and the equilibrium eutectic. In these cases, a metastable alpha-Nb + beta-Nb5Si3 eutectic formed. The results are discussed in terms of possible metastable configurations of the Nb-Si phase diagram as well as concepts of nucleation and growth kinetics applied to the Nb3Si and Nb5Si3 intermetallics.

Mineralogy and possible origin of an unusual Cr-rich inclusion in the Los Martinez (L6) chondrite

During a petrological study of the previously unclassified ordinary chondrite Los Martinez a highly unusual Cr-rich inclusion is found which is unique in both extraterrestrial and terrestrial mineralogy. Detailed SEM and TEM studies show that the inclusion consists of a highly zoned single crystal of plagioclase intergrown with chromium-rich spinel which indicates that it is the product of exsolution. The Cr-rich precursors of the inclusion probably have close affinities to the chronite-plagioclase chrondrules observed by Ramdohr (1967) in several ordinary chondrites. Based on the zoning in the inclusion it is suggested that it is the product of fractional crystallization from a melt, which may have formed as a liquid condensate, or by melting of solid condensates, in the solar nebula. Subsequent cooling of this melt condensate resulted in crystallization of the unidentified phase. After crystallization, the inclusion was probably incorporated into a parent body where it underwent metamorphism and was probably shocked to some degree. During this period of parent body metamorphism, exsolution and decomposition of the unknown precursor occurred to produce the observed intergrowth of plagioclase and chromite. Los Martinez is classified as an L6 ordinary chondrite breccia.

Trace elements in chondritic stratospheric particles - Zinc depletion as a possible indicator of atmospheric entry heating

Major-element abundances in 11 C, C?, and TCA cosmic dust particles have been measured using SEM and TEM energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) systems. The Fe/Ni ratio, when coupled with major element abundances, appears to be a useful discriminator of cosmic particles. Three particles classified as C?, but having Fe/Ni peak height ratios similar to those measured on the powdered Allende meteorite sample in their HSC EDX spectra, exhibit chondritic minor-/trace-element abundance patterns, suggesting they are extraterrestrial. The one particle classified as C-type, but without detectable Ni in its JSC EDX spectrum, exhibits an apparently nonchondritic minor-/trace-element abundance pattern. A class of particles that are chondritic except for large depletions in the volatile elements Zn and S has been identified. It is likely that these particles condensed with a C1 abundance pattern and that Zn and S were removed by some subsequent process.

Creep fatigue life prediction for engine hot section materials (isotropic)

A series of high temperature strain controlled fatigue tests have been completed to study the effects of thermomechanical fatigue, multiaxial loading, reactive environments, and imposed mean stresses. The baseline alloy used in these tests was cast B1900+Hf (with and without coatings); a small number of tests of wrought INCO 718 are also included. A strong path dependence was demonstrated during the thermomechanical fatigue testing, using in-phase, out-phase, and non-proportional (elliptical and 'dogleg') strain-temperature cycles. The multiaxial tests also demonstrated cycle path to be a significant variable, using both proportional and non-proportional tension-torsion loading. Environmental screening tests were conducted in moderate pressure oxygen and purified argon; the oxygen reduced the specimen lives by two, while the argon testing produced ambiguous data. Both NiCoCrAlY overlay and diffusion aluminide coatings were evaluated under isothermal and TMF conditions; in general, the lives of the coated specimens were higher that those of uncoated specimens. Controlled mean stress TMF tests showed that small mean stress changes could change initiation lives by orders of magnitude; these results are not conservatively predicted using traditional linear damage summation rules. Microstructures were evaluated using optical, SEM and TEM methods.

Geochemistry and setting of Martian weathering: The Lafayette meteorite

Lafayette, one of the SNC (martian) meteorites, contains preterrestrial alteration materials rich in smectite and ferric oxides. The compositions and textures of the veinlets suggest that they were formed in episodic alteration events by waters that contained a relatively small load of dissolved salts. The Lafayette achondrite, one of the nakhlites of probable martian origin, is an igneous rock consisting mostly of augite and olivine, with interstitial feldspar, sulfides (pyrite), high-Si glass, and other phases. Like Nakhla itself, Lafayette contains veinlets of hydrous alteration materials. We studied thin sections of sample ME2116 (Field Museum, Chicago), using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS).

Oxidation characteristics of Ti-33Al-6Nb-1.4Ta

Static oxidation kinetics of the gamma titanium-aluminide alloy Ti-33Al-6Nb-1.4Ta (wt pct) have been investigated in air from 700 to 1000 C and in oxygen from 800 to 1000 C using thermogravimetric analysis. The oxidation kinetics were controlled by the presence of alumina for all oxygen exposures and in air below 800 C, while the kinetics in air above 800 C were more complex. Oxidation products were identified using X-ray diffraction techniques. Oxide scale morphology was examined by SEM and TEM of the surfaces and across sections of oxidized specimens. The oxidation products formed depended on the exposure: Al2O3 and TiO2 were identified on all specimens exposed in and air and oxygen; the nitride phases TiN and Ti2AlN were also found on specimens exposed in air.

Role of Si2N2O in the passive oxidation of chemically-vapor-deposited Si3N4

The results of two-step oxidation experiments on chemically-vapor-deposited Si3N4 and SiC at 1350 C show that a correlation exists between the presence of a Si2N2O interphase and the strong oxidation resistance of Si3N4. During normal oxidation, k sub p for SiC was 15 times higher than that for Si3N4, and the oxide scale on Si3N4 was found by SEM and TEM to contain a prominent Si2N2O inner layer. However, when oxidized samples are annealed in Ar for 1.5 h at 1500 C and reoxidized at 1350 C as before, three things happen: the oxidation k sub p increases over 55-fold for Si3N4, and 3.5-fold for SiC; the Si3N4 and SiC oxidize with nearly equal k sub p's; and, most significantly, the oxide scale on Si3N4 is found to be lacking an inner Si2N2O layer. The implications of this correlation for the competing models of Si3N4 oxidation are discussed.

Mineralogy of three slightly palagonitized basaltic tephra samples from the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii

The paper characterizes the mineralogy and spectral properties of three slightly palagonitized basaltic tephra samples collected near the summit of Mauna Kea in order to contribute to the basis for inferring mineralogy and processes for Martian surface materials. The mineralogy of size fractions of these samples is examined by diffuse reflectance and FIR spectroscopy, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Moessbauer spectroscopy, magnetic analysis, EMPA, TEM, and SEM. For the 20-1000 micron size fraction, sample HWMK11 (red) is essentially completely oxidized and has a hematite (Ti-hematite) pigment dispersed throughout the silicate matrix. Sample HWMK12 (black) has the lowest proportion of ferric-bearing phases and is thus least weathered. For HWMK11, the amount of hematite is essentially constant, and mica is present only in the coarse clay-sized fraction; smectites are low in structural Fe.

The EET87513 clast N: A CM2 fragment in an HED polymict breccia

Xenoliths of material resembling carbonaceous chondrites have been found in several HED polymict breccias. Most workers concluded that these clasts are related to CM2 meteorites on the basis of texture, bulk composition, and mineralogy. Data on clast N, a carbonaceous chondrite fragment from the howardite EET87513 large enough (approximately 4x5mm on the surface of the slab from which it was separated) to extract bulk samples for INAA and oxygen isotope analysis and to provide a thin section for electron microprobe, SEM, and TEM analysis is reported. Preliminary data for this clast were previously reported. INAA was performed at Oregon State University and bulk oxygen isotopic composition was determined at the University of Chicago. These data confirm that EET87513 clast N is a fragment of CM2 material.

Rhopalium development in Aurelia aurita ephyrae

Rhopalia of developing ephyrae were examined using the SEM and TEM at 24 h intervals following strobilation induction. Kinocilia are shorter in the ephyra stage than in polyps. A few ephyra-type kinocilia are found in rhopalia as early as 24 h after induction, before a distinct rhopalium is seen. By 72 h, the shorter kinocilia predominate and are almost as numerous as in ephyrae (120 h). Many of the kinocilia are associated with mechanoreceptor cells (MR) found in the rhopalia. These MR cells are compared to those reported for medusae. Although newly released ephyrae lack a touch plate, the MR cells in their rhopalia along with the statocyst and neuromuscular system apparently enable these organisms to detect and respond to gravity.
