Possible correlation of Io's posteclipse brightening with major solar flares

In 6 of the 7 instances where posteclipse brightening of Io has been reported by observers using blue filters, a major solar flare occurred within 10 degrees of the sub-Jovian longitude in the 100-day interval prior to observation. In none of the 18 instances where no posteclipse brightening was observed did such a flare occur. It is proposed that a phenomenon associated with a major solar flare causes an increase in the trapped particle flux at Io's orbit by an order of magnitude. The posteclipse brightening may be caused by thermoluminescence of Io's surface material upon emergence. Alternatively, it is possible that the increase in trapped particle flux would warm the surface, creating a temporary atmosphere which would precipitate during eclipse cooling and vaporize in the period of warming after reemergence.

A comparison of characteristic times for satellite absorption of energetic protons trapped in the Jovian and Saturnian magnetic fields

The characteristic times for the absorption of energetic particles trapped in the Jupiter and Saturn magnetospheres by the respective planetary satellites are compared on the basis of Pioneer 10 and 11 data. Characteristic radiation lifetimes with respect to satellite absorption were calculated on the basis of a model of the radial diffusion of particles by the violation of the third adiabatic invariant in the presence of perfectly absorbing satellites, taking into account the tilt and offset of the planetary magnetic dipole moment vectors with respect to the spin axis and the finite gyroradii and bounce periods of the trapped particles. For energetic particles of dipole moments from 1 to 10,000 MeV/G, it is found that the Saturnian times average at least an order of magnitude less than the Jovian times, and the Jovian times increase with increasing trapped particle magnetic mirror latitude. If it is assumed that the rates of radial diffusion are comparable in the two magnetospheres, the results indicate that the Saturnian satellites are more efficient absorbers of inwardly diffusing ions than are the Jovian satellites, due to the near rotational symmetry of the Saturnian magnetic field.

Shuttle radiation dose measurements in the International Space Station orbits

The International Space Station (ISS) is now a reality with the start of a permanent human presence on board. Radiation presents a serious risk to the health and safety of the astronauts, and there is a clear requirement for estimating their exposures prior to and after flights. Predictions of the dose rate at times other than solar minimum or solar maximum have not been possible, because there has been no method to calculate the trapped-particle spectrum at intermediate times. Over the last few years, a tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) has been flown at a fixed mid-deck location on board the Space Shuttle in 51.65 degrees inclination flights. These flights have provided data that cover the expected changes in the dose rates due to changes in altitude and changes in solar activity from the solar minimum to the solar maximum of the current 23rd solar cycle. Based on these data, a simple function of the solar deceleration potential has been derived that can be used to predict the galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) dose rates to within +/-10%. For altitudes to be covered by the ISS, the dose rate due to the trapped particles is found to be a power-law function, rho(-2/3), of the atmospheric density, rho. This relationship can be used to predict trapped dose rates inside these spacecraft to +/-10% throughout the solar cycle. Thus, given the shielding distribution for a location inside the Space Shuttle or inside an ISS module, this approach can be used to predict the combined GCR + trapped dose rate to better than +/-15% for quiet solar conditions.

Inhomogeneous electric field effects in a linear RF quadruple trap

The exact potential corresponding to confining fields inside a linear rf quadrupole particle trap of finite length is presented. The analytic expressions for the trapping potential is derived by introducing a linear trap employing a relatively simple cylindrical geometry and solving Laplace's equation for the trap electrodes. The finite length of linear traps results in field distortion near the trap ends. An exact analytic determination of the fields is useful because the profile of the trapped ion cloud is highly dependent on the fields confining it. It is shown that near the ends of the trap, the effective potential arising from the rf fields acts to propel particles out of the trap, and further, that the addition of a dc bias generates an inhomogeneous in the trap that influences the particles both perpendicularly to and along the trap's long axis.
