Luminescence dosimetry for evaluation of the external exposure in Metlino, upper Techa River valley, Southern Urals, Russia: Analysis of new results

Luminescence dosimetry was applied in the former settlement of Metlino, Southern Urals, Russia as part of a full-scale study to validate the Techa River Dosimetry System (TRDS) 2016 for the upper Techa River region. The village, which was evacuated in 1956, was located 7 km downstream of the release point of liquid radioactive waste by the Mayak plutonium facility. Several brick samples were taken from north-eastern and south-eastern walls of the granary, facing the former Techa river shoreline and floodplain. Samples were all taken at the same height and measured at different depths into the brick. For the majority of brick samples, good Optically Stimulated Luminescence properties of the quartz grains were observed. In some cases, however, strong levels of sensitization and/or signal recuperation were encountered which necessitated adjustment in the measurement protocols. Anthropogenic doses in bricks varied from 1.5 to 6.6 Gy and the horizontal profiles along both walls showed significant variation, which is explained on a qualitative basis. Further, a dose depth profile is observed for selected samples, which is different from the dose depth profile measured and simulated for samples from the north-western wall of the granary in previous studies. This is qualitatively explained by the differences in source configuration.

Preliminary Design of a New Pulsed-Neutron Die-Away Experimental Testbed for Thermal Scattering Law Benchmarks (PNDA) (IER-501 CED-1)

This report presents the preliminary design (CED-1) of IER-501, a new testbed for pulsed-neutron die-away (PNDA) experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The PNDA experiments will be high-quality benchmarks that serve to optimize and validate thermal scattering laws (TSLs), which are high-priority nuclear data for the Department of Energy’s Criticality Safety Program (NCSP). PNDA experiments can be used to generate nuclear data validation benchmarks quickly and cheaply, as they do not require fissile material or a nuclear facility to conduct them.

Thermal Neutron Scattering Law for Beryllium Hydride and Critical Mass Calculations [Slides]

TSLs for H(BeH 2 ) and Be(BeH 2 ) were evaluated in the incoherent approximation using FLASSH. Minimum critical mass estimates were performed using MC21 continuous energy Monte Carlo calculations with the BeH 2 TSLs. Researchers confirmed very low estimated critical mass for BeH 2 -moderated and Be- reflected spheres. These were the lowest critical masses NNL has studied to date. Future work includes relaxation of the incoherent approximation for Be(BeH 2 ). A small increase in critical mass is expected due to increased neutron transmission at sub-Bragg cutoff energies.

Data Testing with Zero Power Reactor (ZPR), Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR), and New Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) Plutonium Benchmarks [Slides]

This presentation states that new TSLs in ENDF/B-VIII.0 will reduce the overprediction of the library for the most moderated cases. The differences between VII.1 and VIII.0 are driven by the 239 Pu changes and are consistently higher for all configurations. The VIII.0 239 Pu thermal cross sections were specifically adjusted lower to better predict plutonium thermal solutions criticality benchmarks, yet they overpredict the TEX thermal configurations, moderated by PE. Other, smaller differences have been seen for 240 Pu and 56 Fe. PMM-002 has shown utility in testing cross sections over a wide range of neutron energies.

Proposed Methodology for Evaluating and Validating TSLs [Slides]

This presentation begins by providing an overview of the research and discusses recent efforts in validating thermal neutron scattering cross sections, including differential cross section measurements at ORNL for evaluation and validation, total cross section measurements at RPI, pulsed-neutron die-away experiments at LLNL, and integral criticality experiments by LLNL. The presentation also proposes a methodology not only for validating thermal scattering files that utilizes all available experimental data, but also for evaluating new libraries as demonstrated on polystyrene. In conclusion, polystyrene evaluation was conducted using multiple experiments, including differential and integral. The proposed methodology has been shown to improve neutron transport and files have been submitted to NNDC for inclusion in ENDF/B-VIII.1 release. MCT-012 & PCM-002 has been relatively insensitive to changes in $\mathcal{S}(α,β)$. The research found that differences in differential results don’t always propagate to differences in integral results, hence why evaluation of differential data important. Future work on the project is also discussed.

Proposed Generalized Header File for TSLs [Slides]

This presentation discusses several recent issues have been raised over the past few years regarding inconsistent definitions for the number of scattering atoms between incoherent elastic and inelastic (MT2 and MT4 files, respectively) in the same MF7 file and isotopic distribution of primary scattering atom. It also discusses how processing codes handle these potential issues in different ways. Additionally, it discusses how the preferred solution would be automation in order to reduce possibility of user error and a proposed solution in the form of a MF7/MT1 file is examined with preliminary examples. The presentation concludes with a question-and-answer discussion.

Overview of Nuclear Data Measurement and Analysis at RPI [Slides]

This presentation discusses the experimental, simulation, and nuclear data methods that were validated for the RPI γ-Multiplicity Detector. When the neutron capture γ-cascade data is well-known, the γ-emission spectra can be accurately calculated using the modified simulation tools. The RPI γ-Multiplicity Detector system is now ready for analysis and recommendations for isotopes with deficiencies in γ-ray data. The presentation also discusses future work which includes developing a method for analyzing and adjusting nuclear data for 59 Co, 55 Mn and other measured isotopes including 181 Ta. Additionally, future work includes comparing experimental γ-emission spectra with MCNP-6.2/DICEBOX simulations for 238 U and 235 U. In summation, new capture and transmission measurements for 54 Fe will help improve resonance parameter evaluation. Neutron capture gamma cascade spectra and yields were measured in the resolved resonance region and compared to evaluations. In addition, the pulsed neutron die-away method was developed as a tool to provide data for validation of TSLs.
