Air Traffic Management Technology Demonstration 1 (ATD-1) Tech Transfer Document Summary: Version 3.0

This document summarizes transfer of NASA's terminal sequencing and spacing (TSS) and interval management (IM) technologies to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), as part of its Air Traffic Management Technology (ATM) Demonstration 1 activity. This activity, referred to as ATD-1, is part of NASA's Airspace Systems Program (ASP) specifically, its System Analysis, Integration, and Evaluation (SAIE) Project. ATD-1 is a multi-year research and development effort aimed at accelerating implementation and deployment of NASA-developed ATM technologies by the FAA. These technologies are designed to improve the utilization of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) procedures inside congested terminal airspace. In terms of NASA's Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), ATD-1 is focused on maturing its associated technologies from the Technology Development stage (TRL 4) to the Technology Demonstration stage (TRL 6). In order to ensure that the products of this tech-transfer are relevant and useful, NASA has created strong partnerships with the FAA and key industry stakeholders.

NASA and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) National Campaign (NC) Tech Talk: Integrated Data Product

NASA Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) National Campaign has hosted multiple flight tests in a effort to promote public confidence and accelerate the realization of emerging aviation markets for passenger and cargo transportation in urban, suburban, rural, and regional environments. The goals and objectives for each flight test are intended to assess the performance of the vehicle’s capacity to operate safely, efficiently, and sustainably in urban areas. The Airspace Test and Infrastructure (ATI) team processes the flight data to evaluate the effectiveness of air vehicle and airspace management integration, while its analysis capabilities support the assessment of the efficacy of proposed vehicles and ground systems required to enable the vehicles’ operations. The ATI data services team creates many products from the data, first by transforming and merging the data into a single Integrated Data Product (IDP). This aligns data from many sources by time, so that, for example, the winds that impacted a flight can be aligned with its ground track and speed. A detailed IDP enables many types of statistical computation and visualizations that help researchers understand what transpired during the flight and how it can be explained. This Tech Talk will give an overview of the IDP process, including examples of the resulting products created by the data services team. It will also share an application that will allow participants to perform their own data analysis.

Results of the NASA Prediction Uncertainty Reduction Tech Challenge

In January 2021 the Advanced Air Vehicles Program approved a new Tech Challenge (TC) to be run out of the Commercial Supersonic Technology (CST) Project. The objective of the TC was to bring uncertainties in the empirical noise modeling for civilian supersonic aircraft into the same range as that of conventional aircraft. The TC goal statement was to “Produce data and demonstrate tools that reduce the uncertainty in predicting Landing & Takeoff Noise levels of supersonic-relevant designs by 5 EPNdB and are ready for use in studies to inform FAA rule-making.” To make the required improvements in noise prediction methods for supersonic aircraft, NASA decided to validate and use high-fidelity numerical simulations to acquire the needed noise data on supersonic propulsion configurations. High-fidelity component designs were developed, such as a two-stage propulsor behind a supersonic inlet designed by General Electric Aviation and variable area exhaust systems using input from recent contracts with GE and Rolls Royce. A noise database was generated as a function of geometric and flow parameters, providing corrections to the empirical noise models and added new input variables to describe the complexities created by the supersonic-specific design features. Statistically, the new models were able to predict the acoustic impact of supersonic-specific features, the reduction in uncertainty being reduced from the baseline 7.8 EPNdB at the beginning of the TC to 2.0 EPNdB at the end.

CRADA Final Report: CRADA Number NFE-22-09311 with Agriwater Tech

Livestock wastewater management is a critical concern in the United States, with an annual production of approximately 1.37 billion tons of waste, surpassing human waste by three to twenty times. The mismanagement of manure wastewater poses significant threats to freshwater sources, ecosystems, and public health. Through this project, we proposed an innovative solution using electrocoagulation (EC) treatment. The EC technique is an electrochemical process involving the intentional corrosion of aluminum and iron electrodes to introduce trivalent ions into the solution, facilitating the co-precipitation and coagulation of contaminants and making the removal of water from sludge easier. The project's primary objective is to use EC to convert liquid animal manure into clean water for farm irrigation, drinking, and maintenance. This solution is vital for various farms including those facing drought, pursuing zero-discharge, and seeking Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permits for livestock farm manure discharge into rivers. Preliminary research shows EC's potential to significantly reduce turbidity and phosphate levels in livestock wastewater, forming the basis for scalable onsite treatment. The goal of this proposed project is to develop an innovative farm-wastewater-treatment process to achieve clean water, fertilizer, and reduced greenhouse gases through electrification of current processes such as coagulation, dewatering, inactivation of viruses and bacteria, and filtration for recycling surface water from farm lagoons.

The Contact Stress Sensor _ Proposal to the FY2020 Technology Tech Mat Grants Program

The technology to be advanced is a very small and thin Contact Stress Sensor (CSS) that measures the contact stress between two contacting surfaces. It will be used to monitor the internal condition of a weapon in the stockpile over periods of decades. Monitoring the load path of a complex weapon assembly offers an important verification of the weapon’s mechanical state in both quasi-static or dynamic environments. Concurrently, the sensor can be used to measure temperature. This is useful for sensor calibration while installed in a system, as well as thermal monitoring in regions of the system that are difficult to access. Thus, the CSS is one way to monitor the internal “health” of a weapon. A sensor is shown below with each sensor being less then 2mm in width and 125 microns in thickness.
