The Marine and Hydrokinetic ToolKit for Data Quality Control and Analysis: Preprint

The ability to handle data is critical at all stages of marine energy (ME) development. The marine hydrokinetic toolkit (MHKiT) is an open-source marine energy software, which includes modules for ingesting, applying quality control, processing, visualizing, and managing data. MHKiT-Python and MHKiT-MATLAB provide robust and verified functions that are needed by the ME community to standardize data processing. Calculations and visualizations adhere to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) technical specifications and other guidelines. A resource assessment of NDBC buoy 46050 near PACWAVE is performed using MHKiT and discusses comparisons to the resource assessment provided performed by Dunkel et al.

Composable optimization and control toolkit for scientific applications

Applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) can improve the computational efficiency and scientific research output. In order to improve interoperability and reuse of AI/ML software, a composable approach is required. This talk presents a composable approach for scientific workflow development that allows seamless integration of various modules developed by independent researchers. These practices will reduce redundant software development by allowing re-use of workflow modules across projects, teams, departments and facilities. We will present three use cases that follow the composable approach namely, Scientific Optimization and Control Toolkit (SOCT), SciDAC QuantOm workflow, and JLab Nuclear Physics experimental workflows. This talk will dive deeper into SOCT and present the details of the composable code development for optimization and control algorithms using reinforcement learning.

Clear Sky Tampa Bay: Project and Toolkit Overview - Resilience-Based Resources for Assessing Solar + Storage on Critical Facilities

The Clear Sky Tampa Bay Team, convened by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC) and composed of county and city partners, private and public sector stakeholders, solar energy experts, and academic partners, collaboratively developed a set of resources to support the expanded use of solar + storage in the context of community resilience in Florida. Key questions guiding the project included: (1) What types of buildings and systems provide the maximum resilience benefits? (2) Where within our communities should we prioritize future solar + storage analysis or investment to mitigate the impacts of disasters? (3) How might other societal variables be incorporated into a site assessment when considering solar + storage for resilience? (4) Can a standardized process be developed that leverages existing resources to assist local governments with solar + storage for resilience research and decision-making?

The ezSpectra suite: An easy‐to‐use toolkit for spectroscopy modeling

Abstract A molecule's spectrum encodes information about its structure and electronic properties. It is a unique fingerprint that can serve as a molecular ID. Quantum chemistry calculations provide key ingredients for interpreting spectra, but modeling the spectra rarely ends there; it requires additional steps that entail combined treatments of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom and account for specifics of the experimental setup (light energy, polarization, averaging over molecular orientations, temperature, etc.). This Software Focus article describes the ezSpectra suite, which currently comprises two stand‐alone open‐source codes: ezFCF and ezDyson . ezFCF calculates Franck–Condon factors, which yield vibrational progressions for polyatomic molecules, within the double‐harmonic approximation. ezDyson calculates absolute cross‐sections for photodetachment/photoionization processes and photoelectron angular distributions using Dyson orbitals computed by a quantum chemistry program. This article is categorized under: Electronic Structure Theory > Ab Initio Electronic Structure Methods Theoretical and Physical Chemistry > Spectroscopy Software > Simulation Methods

CSPlib: A performance portable parallel software toolkit for analyzing complex kinetic mechanisms

Computational singular perturbation (CSP) is a method to analyze dynamical systems. It targets the decoupling of fast and slow dynamics using an alternate linear expansion of the right-hand side of the governing equations based on eigenanalysis of the associated Jacobian matrix. This representation facilitates diagnostic analysis, detection and control of stiffness, and the development of simplified models. For this work, we have implemented CSP in a C++ open-source library CSPlib using the Kokkos parallel programming model to address portability across diverse heterogeneous computing platforms, i.e., multi/many-core CPUs and GPUs. We describe the CSPlib implementation and present its computational performance across different computing platforms using several test problems. Specifically, we test the CSPlib performance for a constant pressure ignition reactor model on different architectures, including IBM Power 9, Intel Xeon Skylake, and NVIDIA V100 GPU. The size of the chemical kinetic mechanism is varied in these tests. As expected, the Jacobian matrix evaluation, the eigensolution of the Jacobian matrix, and matrix inversion are the most expensive computational tasks. When considering the higher throughput characteristic of GPUs, GPUs performs better for small matrices with higher occupancy rate. CPUs gain more advantages from the higher performance of well-tuned and optimized linear algebra libraries such as OpenBLAS.

Analysis of X-ray images and spectra (aXis2000): A toolkit for the analysis of X-ray spectromicroscopy data

Spectromicroscopy refers to analytical methods that combine imaging and spectroscopy to provide detailed, spatially resolved analytical information about a sample, such as the type and quantitative spatial distributions of chemical components, geometric or magnetic alignment information, crystal structure, etc. The analysis of X-ray images and spectra (aXis2000) software described in this work provides a set of routines within a single, integrated, graphical-oriented package to read, display, manipulate and analyze spectromicroscopy data, with particular focus on soft X-ray spectromicroscopy methods such as scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM), scanning photoelectron X-ray microscopy (SPEM) and transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM). Here, this free software is described and compared to other software that can provide similar or complementary capabilities. Examples of spectromicroscopic analyses using advanced features of aXis2000 are provided.
