Flow field analysis of aircraft configurations using a numerical solution to the three-dimensional unified supersonic/hypersonic small disturbance equations, part 1

The unified small disturbance equations are numerically solved using the well-known Lax-Wendroff finite difference technique. The method allows complete determination of the inviscid flow field and surface properties as long as the flow remains supersonic. Shock waves and other discontinuities are accounted for implicity in the numerical method. This technique was programed for general application to the three-dimensional case. The validity of the method is demonstrated by calculations on cones, axisymmetric bodies, lifting bodies, delta wings, and a conical wing/body combination. Part 1 contains the discussion of problem development and results of the study. Part 2 contains flow charts, subroutine descriptions, and a listing of the computer program.

A unified approach to the classification of visual data systems.

Description of an approach to attaining a unified means of characterizing film, TV, and optical data systems. The concept is based on the premise that all of these imaging systems can be described by an equation similar to the ideal imaging system described by Rose (1948). This technique permits the direct comparison of film and TV performance without converting speed, film resolution lines, TV resolution lines, highlight output current and video bandwidth into compatible units, only to find some essential element of the conversion has been omitted from the particular specification in use. Most important, it permits system performance criteria to be based on input and output criteria without extensive manipulation of the elements between input and output.

Unified classical path theories of pressure broadening.

Derivation of a unified classical path theory of pressure broadening, using only elementary concepts. It is shown that the theory of Smith, Cooper and Vidal (1969) is only correct at all frequencies to first order in the number density of perturbers.

Unified life detection system: A concept

Systematic investigation of techniques and hardware which could be utilized in life detection system has resulted in identification of group of candidate concepts and selection of "unified system". Theme of concept permits greatest flexibility in procedural details for experiments which can be performed in individual ampules.

Unified Approach to the Biomechanics of Dental Implantology

The human need for safe and effective dental implants is well-recognized. Although many implant designs have been tested and are in use today, a large number have resulted in clinical failure. These failures appear to be due to biomechanical effects, as well as biocompatibility and surgical factors. A unified approach is proposed using multidisciplinary systems technology, for the study of the biomechanical interactions between dental implants and host tissues. The approach progresses from biomechanical modeling and analysis, supported by experimental investigations, through implant design development, clinical verification, and education of the dental practitioner. The result of the biomechanical modeling, analysis, and experimental phases would be the development of scientific design criteria for implants. Implant designs meeting these criteria would be generated, fabricated, and tested in animals. After design acceptance, these implants would be tested in humans, using efficient and safe surgical and restorative procedures. Finally, educational media and instructional courses would be developed for training dental practitioners in the use of the resulting implants.

Study of the dynamics of orbital assemblies including interactions with geometrical appendages. Unified flexible spacecraft load program (LOAD): Final report and user's and operation manual

The addition of a dynamic loads computation capability to the Unified Flexible Spacecraft Simulation (UFSS) program is discussed. The added capability provides a means for determining the internal member loads due to the time-varying external loading conditions experienced by an orbiting spacecraft/cluster. The flexible bodies are modeled as a system of joints or nodes which are interconnected by weightless finite element members. All masses are lumped at the joints. The orthogonal functions used to describe the spatial deformation of the bodies are normally taken to be the orthonormal cantilever modes produced by a standard structural dynamics program.

The Unified S-band Ground System.

This paper describes how the design of the Unified S-band Ground System evolved from the technology available in the NASA's Deep Space Network and Scientific Satellite Network as well as the Manned Space Flight Network to fulfill the requirements of the Apollo program. The project organization established for this program proved to be an effective management technique for controlling the widely dispersed activities and maintaining the necessary liaison with other organizations involved in the overall program. The Manned Space Flight Network includes systems at three locations employing 26 meter antennas to support the lunar phases of the mission and a number of systems at other locations employing 9 meter antennas for support of the near earth phases of the mission. The tradeoffs of mission requirements and technical capability established the equipment parameters and the network configuration. An extensive checkout program which included the use of aircraft and spacecraft provided a thorough evaluation of the system prior to its commitment to operational support of the missions.

Unified powered flight guidance

A complete revision of the orbiter powered flight guidance scheme is presented. A unified approach to powered flight guidance was taken to accommodate all phases of exo-atmospheric orbiter powered flight, from ascent through deorbit. The guidance scheme was changed from the previous modified version of the Lambert Aim Point Maneuver Mode used in Apollo to one that employs linear tangent guidance concepts. This document replaces the previous ascent phase equation document.
