Star scanner attitude determination for the OSO-7 spacecraft.

Calculation of the inertial orientation of the OSO-7 spacecraft from the times at which known stars or planets transit planes fixed in the spacecraft. Both the reference planes and the timing information are provided by the star scanner instrument aboard the spacecraft, while the star identification and the statistical estimation of a set of parameters describing the spacecraft attitude are accomplished in a ground station computer facility. A recursive least-squares determination is made of a vector of first-order differential corrections to the attitude state vector. Preliminary analysis indicates the system accuracy to be 3 arc min in each attitude Euler angle.

Application of multivariate autoregressive spectrum estimation to ULF waves

The estimation of the power spectrum of a time series by fitting a finite autoregressive model to the data has recently found widespread application in the physical sciences. The extension of this method to the analysis of vector time series is presented here through its application to ULF waves observed in the magnetosphere by the ATS 6 synchronous satellite. Autoregressive spectral estimates of the power and cross-power spectra of these waves are computed with computer programs developed by the author and are compared with the corresponding Blackman-Tukey spectral estimates. The resulting spectral density matrices are then analyzed to determine the direction of propagation and polarization of the observed waves.

A time dependent model of the Jovian current sheet

Analysis of vector helium magnetometer measurements during the Pioneer 10 outbound pass through the Jovian magnetosphere reveals that the average location of the near-equatorial current sheet is a surface whose shape is determined by the velocity at which the magnetic perturbations produced by a rotating tilted dipole propagate to large radial distances. A model is presented which is a surface encircling the planet and rotating rigidly with it. Based on a linear fit to the times of the current sheet crossings, a formula is derived for the surface representing the average position of the near-equatorial current sheet in the Jovian magnetosphere.

Vector space methods of photometric analysis. II - Refinement of the MK grid for B stars. III - The two components of ultraviolet reddening

This paper discusses systematic errors which arise from exclusive use of the MK system to determine reddening. It is found that implementation of uvby, beta photometry to refine the qualitative MK grid substantially reduces stellar mismatch error. A working definition of 'identical' ubvy, beta types is investigated and the relationship of uvby to B-V color excesses is determined. A comparison is also made of the hydrogen based uvby, beta types with the MK system based on He and metal lines. A small core correlated effective temperature luminosity error in the MK system for the early B stars is observed along with a breakdown of the MK luminosity criteria for the late B stars. The second part investigates the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction in the ultraviolet wavelength range observed with the TD-1 satellite. In this study the sets of identical stars employed to find reddening are determined more precisely than in previous studies and consist only of normal, nonsupergiant stars. A multivariate analysis of variance techniques in an unbiased coordinate system is used for determining the wavelength dependence of reddening.

Cosmic ray secular variations in terrestrial records and aurorae

The rediscovery that the Sun and the solar wind can undergo important changes on historical time scales has brought into question the stability of the cyclic behavior of past time series of solar and solar-terrestrial origin. It was found by Vector Fourier analysis that the solar 11 year cycle is present in the series of 10Be, delta 180, in ice cores and of thermoluminescence (TL) in sea sediments during the last Millennia with a frequency modulation, related to the Sun behavior, as tested by comparison with the Sunspot number R sub z series. It was shown that the cyclogram of the series of yearly Aurorae from 1721 to 1979 linear-regression-corrected-for-R sub z is straight for the periodicity zeta=11,1y, which indicates that such periodicity is constant in time corresponding to the only line present in the 11y band. The maxima of this component appear at the same time together with the high speed solar wind streams taking place in coronal holes situated in high heliolatitudes. It is evidenced that the 11 year cycle has undergone frequency oscillations on a time scale of two centuries, although it is very difficult to determine the periodicities with high accuracy.

Robot arm dynamic model reduction for control

General methods are described by which the mathematical complexities of explicit and exact state equations of robot arms can be reduced to a simplified and compact state equation representation without introducing significant errors into the robot arm dynamic model. The model reduction methods are based on homogeneous coordinates and on the Langrangian algorithm for robot arm dynamics, and utilize matrix, vector and numeric analysis techniques. The derivation of differential vector representation of centripetal and Coriolis forces which has not yet been established in the literature is presented.

Microwave holography of large reflector antennas - Simulation algorithms

The performance of large reflector antennas can be improved by identifying the location and amount of their surface distortions and correcting them. To determine the accuracy of the constructed surface profiles, simulation studies are used to incorporate both the effects of systematic and random distortions, particularly the effects of the displaced surface panels. In this paper, different simulation models are investigated, emphasizing a model based on the vector diffraction analysis of a curved reflector with displaced panels. The simulated far-field patterns are then used to reconstruct the location and amount of displacement of the surface panels by employing a fast Fourier transform/iterative procedure. The sensitivity of the microwave holography technique based on the number of far-field sampled points, level of distortions, polarizations, illumination tapers, etc., is also examined.

Analysis and improvement of the vector quantization in SELP (Stochastically Excited Linear Prediction)

The Stochastically Excited Linear Prediction (SELP) algorithm is described as a speech coding method employing a two-stage vector quantization. The first stage uses an adaptive codebook which efficiently encodes the periodicity of voiced speech, and the second stage uses a stochastic codebook to encode the remainder of the excitation signal. The adaptive codebook performs well when the pitch period of the speech signal is larger than the frame size. An extension is introduced, which increases its performance for the case that the frame size is longer than the pitch period. The performance of the stochastic stage, which improves with frame length, is shown to be best in those sections of the speech signal where a high level of short-term correlations is present. It can be concluded that the SELP algorithm performs best during voiced speech where the pitch period is longer than the frame length.

The ijk forms of factorization methods. II - Parallel systems

The paper considers the 'ijk forms' of LU and Cholesky factorization on certain parallel computers. This extends an earlier analysis for vector computers. Attention is restricted to local memory systems with processors that may or may not have vector capability. Special attention is given to bus architectures but qualitative analyses are given for other interconnection systems.
