Triangular-wave generator with controlled sweep polarity

Generator, comprised largely of integrated circuits, has operational amplifier connected as integrator to provide linear voltage ramp, pair of logic gates and one-shot multivibrator function as sweep reverse circuit feeding the integrator. Solid state switch effects generator hold capability.

Shock waves generated by the intense solar flare of 1972, August 7, 15:00 UT

The dynamic radio spectrum of the class 3B solar flare of 1972, August 7, 15:00 UT, over the band 10 to 2000 MHz is examined. Type II and type IV bursts in the spectrum are interpreted in terms of a piston-driven shock, which appeared to be traveling at a velocity of about 1500 km per sec and which generated pulsations in the band 100 to 200 MHz as it passed through the corona. The progress of the shock through the interplanetary plasma was subsequently monitored by Malitson et al. with radio equipment covering the band 0.03 to 2.6 MHz on the IMP-6 satellite.

A two-scale Bragg scattering model for microwave backscatter from wind generated waves

A model for the wavenumber spectrum for fully developed seas is derived as a function of the mean wind gradient. The high wavenumber part of the spectrum, which defines the Bragg wavenumbers, is an equilibrium spectrum in balance by a wind forcing term determined by viscous dissipation, which is a strong function of water temperature, and dissipation by breaking and microbreaking. The low wavenumber spectrum, constructed from surface elevation observations of gravity waves, is merged with the high wavenumber spectrum. Parameters are adjusted to fit circle flight data for Ku-band. The full spectrum is used in the two-scale Bragg scattering theory, plus specular reflection, to compute backscatter as a function of wind speed, direction, incidence angle, and water temperature (which determines viscosity) for Ku-band.

High-Voltage Square-Wave Generator

Fast switching circuit puts out rectangular pulses of order of kilovolt or greater at typical repetition frequencies as high as hundreds of kilohertz and with rise times as short as 50 ns. Designed around power metal oxide/semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET's). Optically isolated power MOSFET's in series rapidly switch output between high voltages V(sub 1) and V(sub 2). Used to supply power to pulsed laser or to modulate beam of charged particles in laboratory experiment or industrial process.

The energy associated with MHD waves generation in the solar wind plasma

Gyrotropic symmetry is usually assumed in measurements of electron distribution functions in the heliosphere. This prevents the calculation of a net current perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. Previous theoretical results derived by one of the authors for a collisionless plasma with isotropic electrons in a strong magnetic field have shown that the excitation of MHD modes becomes possible when the external perpendicular current is non-zero. We consider then that any anisotropic electron population can be thought of as 'external', interacting with the remaining plasma through the self-consistent electromagnetic field. From this point of view any perpendicular current may be due to the anisotropic electrons, or to an external source like a stream, or to both. As perpendicular currents cannot be derived from the measured distribution functions, we resort to Ampere's law and experimental data of magnetic field fluctuations. The transfer of energy between MHD modes and external currents is then discussed.
