Conformal and Spectrally Agile Ultra Wideband Phased Array Antenna for Communication and Sensing

There is a continuing need for reducing size and weight of satellite systems, and is also strong interest to increase the functional role of small- and nano-satellites (for instance SmallSats and CubeSats). To this end, a family of arrays is presented, demonstrating ultra-wideband operation across the numerous satellite communications and sensing frequencies up to the Ku-, Ka-, and Millimeter-Wave bands. An example design is demonstrated to operate from 3.5-18.5 GHz with VSWR2 at broadside, and validated through fabrication of an 8 x 8 prototype. This design is optimized for low cost, using Printed Circuit Board (PCB) fabrication. With the same fabrication technology, scaling is shown to be feasible up to a 9-49 GHz band. Further designs are discussed, which extend this wideband operation beyond the Ka-band, for instance from 20-80 GHz. Finally we will discuss recent efforts in the direct integration of such arrays with digital beamforming back-ends. It will be shown that using a novel on-site coding architecture, orders of magnitude reduction in hardware size, power, and cost is accomplished in this transceiver.

FY18 SSC Agile-Seedling Fund Opportunities

The attached charts provide some background on an SSC (Stennis Space Center) initiative to support employees who may have ideas for technology development efforts but haven't been engaged in writing proposals to sources such as the Center Innovation Fund and other STMD (NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate) or HEOMD (NASA Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate) solicitation calls.

Vortex Radiometry: Enabling Frequency Agile Communications

Exponential proliferation of UAVs and CubeSats puts NASA's high priority communication systems at risk. UAVs and CubeSats are easy to acquire, modify and build, making it extremely likely that some will be used in unauthorized ways. While these systems provide several benefits to society, their increased use also increases the probability of unintentional signal interference, and even deliberate jamming of NASA's communication systems. This paper presents an algorithm to determine 1) when an interference induced fade will occur, 2) how long the fade will persist for and 3) how intense the fade will be. The algorithm requires data collected from Vortex Radiometers (VRs), which probe the RF environment using annular antenna beam patterns. A set of numerical simulations show that a multi-beam VR system can instruct a cognitive antenna to switch between Ka- and X-Band communications, in order to avert interference from small diameter noise sources. Analysis of the simulation results indicate that practical VR systems will require several concentric annular beam patterns, in order to mitigate fades from noise sources of various sizes. The paper concludes by identifying technology challenges that need to be overcome to achieve these capabilities.

Autonomous Guidance Navigation and Control for Agile Quadrotors Using Polynomial Trajectory Planning and L1 Adaptive Control

We address the challenge to allow efficient autonomous flight in real world environments, both indoor and outdoor. We use a straight-line SE-SCP (Spherical Expansion and Sequential Convex Programming) [algorithm] to find an initial route through the environment and minimum snap trajectory generation using piecewise polynomials. Then, we implement an adaptive robust control able to address some robustness issues for quadrotors in outdoor flight, such as mass variation and wind disturbances. Coupling these techniques we allow high-speed and aggressive autonomous flight through obstacle-dense indoor environments, as well as address outdoor disturbances.
