Baseline vs. DER Scenario

Projections and associated uncertainty estimates are generated for a variety of user-selectable EV charging sessions, electricity tariffs, subsidy levels, revenue schemes, charging station configurations, and on-site solar and/or storage options. The outputs are presented in CHIP's web portal browser in the form of easily interpretable graphics (interactive graphs and bar charts) that facilitate convenient comparison among different scenarios to aid decision-making. The user should bring assumptions for modeling on simulation planning horizon, number of EV charging sessions per year, electricity costs (energy and demand charge rates; flat versus time-of-use rate), site capital costs (equipment for EV chargers and transformer), solar PV, and battery energy storage (kW).

A Modular and Transferable Reinforcement Learning Framework for the Fleet Rebalancing Problem

Mobility on demand (MoD) systems show great promise in realizing flexible and efficient urban transportation. However, significant technical challenges arise from operational decision making associated with MoD vehicle dispatch and fleet rebalancing. For this reason, operators tend to employ simplified algorithms that have been demonstrated to work well in a particular setting. To help bridge the gap between novel and existing methods, we propose a modular framework for fleet rebalancing based on model-free reinforcement learning (RL) that can leverage an existing dispatch method to minimize system cost. In particular, by treating dispatch as part of the environment dynamics, a centralized agent can learn to intermittently direct the dispatcher to reposition free vehicles and mitigate against fleet imbalance. We formulate RL state and action spaces as distributions over a grid partitioning of the operating area, making the framework scalable and avoiding the complexities associated with multiagent RL. Numerical experiments, using real-world trip and network data, demonstrate that RL reduces waiting time by 28% to 38% for the same-day evaluation, 17% to 44% for cross-day evaluation, and 22% to 25% for cross-season evaluation compared with no rebalancing scenarios. This approach has several distinct advantages over baseline methods including: improved system cost; high degree of adaptability to the selected dispatch method; and the ability to perform scale-invariant transfer learning between problem instances with similar vehicle and request distributions.

Adaptive spectra-to-exposure conversion using ridge regularized polynomial response models

Real-time gamma spectra-to-exposure conversion in aerial and ground monitoring commonly relies on calibration-derived, detector- or system-specific conversion coefficients that are assumed to generalize across operational environments. In practice, deployment specific differences in spectral composition and transport conditions can introduce systematic bias relative to reference instruments, motivating methods that adapt coefficients using minimal field supervision while explicitly limiting overfitting. In this work, we present a conservative coefficient adaptation framework that updates a baseline polynomial energy-weighting function using ridge-regularized regression, with leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) used to select the regularization strength. The findings support ridge-constrained minimal-supervision adaptation as a practical mechanism to suppress site-specific bias without destabilizing a calibration-derived baseline.

Occupant Preference-Aware Load Scheduling for Resilient Communities

The load scheduling of resilient communities in the islanded mode is subject to many uncertainties such as weather forecast errors and occupant behavior stochasticity. To date, it remains unclear how occupant preferences affect the effectiveness of the load scheduling of resilient communities. This paper proposes an occupant thermal preference-aware load scheduler for resilient communities operating in the islanded mode. First, key resilience indicators are selected to quantify its impacts on the load scheduling of a resilient community. A deterministic model predictive control-based load scheduling framework is adopted as the baseline. Then, a chance-constrained controller is proposed to address the occupant-induced uncertainty in room temperature setpoints. Finally, the chance-constrained controller is compared with the deterministic controller on a virtual community testbed based on a real-world net-zero energy community in Florida, U.S. Results have shown that the proposed chance-constrained controller performs better in terms of serving occupants’ thermal preference and the required battery sizes compared to the deterministic controller with the presence of the assumed stochastic occupant behavior. This work indicates that it is necessary to consider the stochasticity of the occupant behavior when designing optimal load schedulers for resilient communities.

Bayesian Optimized Deep Ensemble for Uncertainty Quantification of Deep Neural Networks: a System Safety Case Study on Sodium Fast Reactor Thermal Stratification Modeling

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are increasingly important to scientific computing and engineering system simulations. Accurate uncertainty quantification (UQ) for DNNs is critical in safety-sensitive engineering domains. Traditional Deep Ensemble (DE) methods, while easy to implement, frequently suffer from poorly calibrated uncertainty estimates and limited predictive accuracy due to reliance on fixed architectures with varied weight initializations. To address these issues, we introduce a workflow that combines Bayesian Optimization (BO) and DE. The workflow is modular, scalable, and integrates parallel BO initialized with Sobol sequences to individually optimize the hyperparameters of each ensemble member. This method enhances ensemble diversity, improves predictive accuracy, and provides reliable uncertainty estimates. We evaluate the proposed BODE approach in a sodium fast reactor thermal stratification modeling case study, where we used a densely connected convolutional neural network to predict turbulent viscosity during the reactor transient with consideration of data noise. We benchmark its performance against several optimization approaches, including baseline deep ensemble, evolutionary algorithm-optimized ensemble, ensemble formed via random search combined with greedy selection, and a BO ensemble using random initialization. Here, our results demonstrate superior performance of the developed BODE approach. In noise-free scenarios, BODE notably reduces incorrect aleatoric uncertainty and significantly enhances predictive accuracy. Under conditions of 5% and 10% Gaussian noise, BODE adaptively quantifies uncertainty proportional to data noise, achieving up to an 80% reduction in root mean square error compared to baseline methods and producing well-calibrated prediction intervals.

Methodologies for Design, Characterization and Testing of Electrolytes that Enable Extreme Fast Charging of Lithium-ion Cells

Selection, testing and validation of electrolyte candidates for Li-ion cells are discussed, based on a 10-minute target for extreme fast charge (XFC). A combination of modeling and laboratory measurements create a timely and synergistic approach to identifying candidate electrolyte formulations. Multi-solvent systems provide a balanced set of properties, wherein lower molecular-weight solvents offer reduced viscosity, increased species diffusivity, and mitigation of concentration polarization at high charge rates. Carefully selected formulations can exhibit peak conductivity and usable conductivity range of two to three times that of the baseline EC-EMC (3:7, wt.) + LiPF 6 . Candidates are also chosen based on stability and longevity within the cell environment. Lab testing coincides with property predictions from the Advanced Electrolyte Model (AEM) and a macro-scale cell model. Furthermore, cell testing utilized coin and pouch cells having NMC532 or NMC811 cathodes with graphite electrodes. Results indicate combinations of low-molecular weight solvents are key for fast-charge electrolytes as they extend the useful conductivity range to both low and higher salt concentrations, and possess higher self-diffusivities compared to conventional solvents. This reduces impacts from concentration polarization. The choice of electrolyte also influences the tendency for lithium metal deposition at the anode, as showcased by experimental and modeling results herein.

Conversion of Syngas and CO2 to Light Olefins using Multi-Functional Catalysts

This report describes our effort in developing a novel zeolite encapsulated metal nanoparticle catalyst for the conversion of syngas to light olefins. We have adopted a ligand assisted synthesis protocol in which first metal-amine was prepared using metal salts and suitable amine ligands. The stable metal-amine complex thus prepared was then used as the seed for the growth of zeolite in alkaline solution. We have optimized the synthesis condition as well as different amine ligand to identify the condition to obtain stable metal-amine complex. Upon synthesis of zeolite, metal particles are encapsulated inside the zeolite in a confined space. We have synthesized both Fe and Co catalyst inside silicalite and chabazite zeolite. Catalytic activity of these catalysts were evaluated for syngas conversion reaction and compared with a baseline catalyst. The activity trend of zeolite encapsulated catalyst show very different activity trend compared to the baseline catalyst. While a distribution of products with different carbon number was obtained with baseline catalyst, zeolite encapsulated catalyst show ethylene as the major product. While ~73% selectivity to C 2 -C 6 products were obtained with cahabazite encapsulated Fe catalyst, only 53% selectivity was obtained for the corresponding products with silica-alumina supported Fe catalyst. Not only higher selectivity, Fe-chabazite also produces only C 2 products (ethylene/ethane) while a distribution of products was obtained with Fe-SiAl catalyst. The significantly different reactivity associated with the chabazite encapsulated Fe catalyst was attributed to the confinement effect. We hypothesized that due to the small size of the pore, only ethylene was obtained as the product.
