High Energy Density and Stable Three-Dimensionally Structured Se-Loaded Bicontinuous Porous Carbon Battery Electrodes

Here, 3D structured Se-loaded bicontinuous porous carbon (BPC) electrodes were fabricated through colloidal templating of BPC followed by pulsed-voltage Se electrodeposition. The resultant electrodes were found to deliver a specific capacity of 665 mA h g -1 at a rate of 0.1 C, near the theoretical value for Se. When a vinylene carbonate containing electrolyte was utilized, the capacity fade over 500 cycles at 1 C rate was as small as a few percent. Impedance measurements and physical characterization of cycled electrodes indicated the exceptionally stable cycling performance was possibly due to vinylene carbonate resulting in formation of a stable SEI during cycling. Along with cycling stability, the rate performance of the 3D Se/BPC electrodes was also good. Due to the bicontinuous structure of carbonaceous current collector at rates as high as 5 C, the deliverable capacity was about 300 mA h g -1 .

Electrochemical and Material Characterization of Laser Micro-Structured Thick Battery Electrodes

By first exploring the limitations of thick planer electrodes, advanced predictive models were prepared to identify optimal electrode patterns for improved cycling performance. Herein, the impact of electrode laser patterning will be discussed in detail. First, materials characterization techniques (SEM-EDS, XRD) were used to explore the effect ultrafast laser ablation had on the electrode materials' morphology and structure. Next, the improvements in the patterned electrodes' electrochemical cycling performances and degrees of wetting will be compared to a pristine baseline case. Finally, the correlation between experimentally obtained data and model predictions will be presented and discussed.

NiCd battery electrodes, C-150

A research program to develop and evaluate electrodes for a nongassing negative limited nickel-cadmium cell is described. The concept of the negative limited cell and its implications on electrode structure are discussed. The key element is the development of a cadmium electrode with high hydrogen overvoltage. For this, Teflon-bonded Cd electrodes and silver-sinter based Gc electrodes were manufactured and in preliminary experiments their physical and electrochemical characteristics were evaluated. Hydrogen evolution on cadmium was found to occur approximately 100 mV more cathodic than on silver. Both electrode structures exhibit a fairly sharp potential rise at the end of the charging cycle and the advent of gas evolution occurs at potentials between -1.2 and -1.3 V versus a Hg/HgO reference electrode. These results are compared with conventional Ni-sinter based Cd electrodes.
