The Signature C=C=O Stretch of Propenylketenes and Ketene Clusters [Book Chapter]

A combined experimental and theoretical approach has been used to examine the signature antisymmetric C=C=O stretch of prop-1-enylketene and prop-2-enylketene, as well as a series of ketene multimers and hydrates. Optimization and frequency calculations executed at the B3LYP/6-311G++(d,p) level of theory reveal four conformers of prop-1-enylketene and three conformers of prop-2-enylketene. These ketenes were generated via the pyrolysis of 3-pentenoic anhydride and 4-pentenoic anhydride, respectively, and isolated in low-temperature argon matrices prior to FTIR analysis. The resultant spectra display several bands consistent with B3LYP predictions. A similar computational and experimental survey of ketene multimers and hydrates, generated by the pyrolysis of acetic anhydride, has generated a list of frequencies for the antisymmetric C=C=O stretching mode. Furthermore, the results provide useful benchmarks for identification of propenylketenes in future experiments as well as insight for assigning other substituted ketenes in infrared spectra.

Developing an Undergraduate Research Laboratory for Experimental Physical Chemistry [Book Chapter]

Embarking on a faculty career in physical chemistry at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI) is exciting, but also overwhelming. Becoming both an effective teacher and a productive researcher requires a good plan, hard work and support from others who understand what it takes to be successful. The phrase, “building a laboratory,” calls to mind the physical construction of a research instrument, but beginning a career at a PUI involves much more than assembling equipment. Funding for the lab must be secured, students must be recruited and mentored, and the lab must be overseen to keep things running on a daily basis. While many of these tasks would also be part of starting a career at a doctoral level institution, there are many special considerations that must be taken into account when working with undergraduate students because their laboratory experience and chemical knowledge are still within those beautiful but nascent stages. Here, this unique aspect makes building a research program challenging, but also very rewarding. Exposing young minds to the wonders of physical chemistry and building personal relationships through the mentoring process can be immensely gratifying. This chapter is a compilation of holistic advice for building an experimental physical chemistry research laboratory for undergraduates, reflecting a typical experience found in the United States.

The Belle II Physics Book

The Belle II Theory Interface Platform (B2TiP) was created as a physics prospects working group of the Belle II collaboration in June 2014. It offered a platform where theorists and experimentalists could work together to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, τ, quarkonium physics, electroweak precision measurements, and dark sector searches.

Force Reconstruction Using the Inverse of the Mode-Shape Matrix [Book Chapter]

A new technique for force reconstruction is developed. To estimate the externally applied force, this technique sums the weight-scaled acceleration signals, and is referred to as the Sum of Weighted Accelerations Technique (SWAT). To obtain the scalar weights the inverse of the mode shape matrix is used. Application of this technique is illustrated with both numerical calculations using a mass-spring model and experimental data from a structure impacting a rigid barrier.

The XLZD Design Book: towards the next-generation liquid xenon observatory for dark matter and neutrino physics

This report describes the experimental strategy and technologies for XLZD, the next-generation xenon observatory sensitive to dark matter and neutrino physics. In the baseline design, the detector will have an active liquid xenon target of 60 tonnes, which could be increased to 80 tonnes if the market conditions for xenon are favorable. It is based on the mature liquid xenon time projection chamber technology used in current-generation experiments, LZ and XENONnT. The report discusses the baseline design and opportunities for further optimization of the individual detector components. The experiment envisaged here has the capability to explore parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter down to the neutrino fog, with a 3σ evidence potential for WIMP-nucleon cross sections as low as 3 x 10 –49 cm 2 (at 40 GeV/c 2 WIMP mass). The observatory will also have leading sensitivity to a wide range of alternative dark matter models. It is projected to have a 3σ observation potential of neutrinoless double beta decay of 136 Xe at a half-life of up to 5.7 x 10 27 years. Additionally, it is sensitive to astrophysical neutrinos from the sun and galactic supernovae.

Ground-State In-Plane Light-Holes in GaAs/AlGaAs Structures [Book Chapter]

We have performed low-temperature magnetoluminescence, far-infrared cyclotron resonance, and magneto-transport measurements on narrow (4.5 nm) GaAs/Al 0.25 Ga 0.75 As single quantum-wells. The ground state in-plane valence band was found to be light and very nonparabolic, i.e., at zone center, the valence band mass is m v ≈ 0. 1 and for E f ≈ 10 meV, m v ≈ 0.25.

Briefing Book: Office of Experimental Sciences

Key to OES science is the advancement of experimental capabilities and vibrant partnerships with other elements of NNSA’s Defense Programs. OES fosters an experimental portfolio that spans the space from small scale studies utilizing tabletop instruments through complex and dynamic high energy density; hydrodynamic; and subcritical experiments on flagship national facilities like Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), National Ignition Facility (NIF), Z machine at Sandia National Laboratories, Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT), and the U1a Complex in Nevada. Essential to meeting the deterrence challenges that drive OES is a functional strategy for integration of OES with Defense Programs pursuits in modeling and simulation, engineering and technology maturation, and stockpile and production modernization.
