Dry Process for Manufacturing Hybridized Boron Fiber/Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composite Materials from a Solution Coated Precursor

An apparatus for producing a hybrid boron reinforced polymer matrix composite from precursor tape and a linear array of boron fibers. The boron fibers are applied onto the precursor tapes and the precursor tape processed within a processing component having an impregnation bar assembly. After passing through variable-dimension forming nip-rollers, the precursor tape with the boron fibers becomes a hybrid boron reinforced polymer matrix composite. A driving mechanism is used to pulled the precursor tape through the method and a take-up spool is used to collect the formed hybrid boron reinforced polymer matrix composite.

The effect of boron supplementation on lean body mass, plasma testosterone levels, and strength in male bodybuilders

The effect of boron supplementation was investigated in 19 male bodybuilders ages 20-27 years. Ten were given a 2.5-mg boron supplement while 9 were given a placebo every day for 7 weeks. Plasma total and free testosterone, plasma boron, lean body mass, and strength measurements were determined on Days 1 and 49 of the study. Plasma boron values were significantly (p < 0.05) different as the experimental group increased from (+/- SD) 20.1 +/- 7.7 ppb pretest to 32.6 +/- 27.6 ppb posttest, while the control group mean decreased from 15.1 +/- 14.4 ppb pretest to 6.3 +/- 5.5 ppb posttest. Analysis of variance indicated no significant effect of boron supplementation on any of the dependent variables. Both groups demonstrated significant increases in total testosterone, lean body mass, 1-RM squat, and 1-RM bench press. The findings suggest that 7 weeks of bodybuilding can increase total testosterone, lean body mass, and strength in lesser trained bodybuilders, and that boron supplementation had no effect on these measures.

Additive manufacturing process for producing aluminum-boron carbide metal matrix composites

A method for additive manufacturing of a composite object containing a bonded network of boron carbide particles and aluminum occupying spaces between boron carbide particles, the method comprising: (i) producing a porous preform constructed of boron carbide by an additive manufacturing process in which particles of boron carbide are bonded together; and (ii) infiltrating molten aluminum, at a temperature of 1000-1400° C., into pores of said porous preform to produce said composite object constructed of boron carbide particles within an aluminum matrix, wherein the boron carbide is present in the composite object in an amount of 30-70 wt. %. The resulting composite material is also herein described.

Boron nitride nanotube precursor formation during high-temperature synthesis: kinetic and thermodynamic modelling

In this work, we performed integrated modelling of the chemical pathways of formation for boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) precursors during high-temperature synthesis in a B/N 2 mixture. Integrated modelling includes quantum chemistry, Quantum–classical molecular dynamics, thermodynamic modelling, and kinetic approaches. We demonstrate that BN compounds are formed via the interaction of molecular nitrogen with small boron clusters, rather than through interactions with less reactive liquid boron. (This process can also be described as N 2 molecule fixation.) Liquid boron evaporates to produce these boron clusters (B m with m ≤ 5), which are subsequently converted into B m N n chains. The production of such chains is crucial to the growth of BNNTs because these chains form the building blocks of bigger and longer BN chains and rings, which are in turn the building blocks of fullborenes and BNNTs. Additionally, kinetic modelling revealed that B 4 N 4 and B 5 N 4 species in particular play a major role in the N 2 molecule fixation process. Furthermore, the formation of these species via reactions with B 4 and B 5 clusters is not adequately described under the assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium, as is demonstrated in our kinetic modelling. Thus, the accumulation of both B 4 N 4 and B 5 N 4 depends on the background gas pressure and the gas cooling rate. Long BN chains and rings, which are precursors of the fullborene and BNNT growth, form via self-assembly of components B 4 N 4 and B 5 N 4 . Our modelling results—particularly the increased densities of B 4 N 4 and B 5 N 4 species at higher gas pressures—explain the experimentally observed effect of gas pressure on the yield of high-quality BNNTs. The catalytic role of hydrogen was also studied; it is shown that HBNH molecules can be the main precursor of BNNT synthesis in the presence of hydrogen.

Predicting boron coordination in multicomponent borate and borosilicate glasses using analytical models and machine learning

Accurate prediction of boron coordination in multicomponent glasses is critical in glass science and technology as it strongly affects the properties of borate and borosilicate glasses. We have collected a dataset containing 657 glasses from literature with boron coordination values and developed models using analytical functions based on the well accepted Dell, Xiao and Bray model. Good prediction of boron coordination with a R 2 value higher than 0.8 was obtained. The large variation of boron coordination from experiments, originated from sample preparations and characterizations, led to difficulties in obtaining models with better prediction performance. Various machine learning (ML) algorithms were evaluated and slightly better prediction performance was observed; however, interpretation of the ML models is less straight forward. In conclusion, this study developed various models capable of providing quantitative boron coordination predictions, providing insights into its structural roles in multi-component glasses, and suggesting fruitful areas for future research.

CO (2) Electroreduction on Borated Copper Surfaces: Boron Active Sites, Not Copper

Boron-doped copper has recently emerged as an active and stable catalyst for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to value-added C 2 products. Here, in this work, we develop a realistic model of CO electroreduction on surface borides of copper under operational conditions, taking into account the effects of electrode potential, electrolyte environment, and pH. We study the possible reconstruction of the electrocatalyst surface using grand canonical DFT and global optimization to obtain a potential-dependent grand canonical ensemble description of metastable, hydrogen-covered catalyst surfaces. Two key surface configurations, low H coverage (LC, −0.6 V SHE ) and high H coverage (HC, −0.8 V SHE ), dominate this ensemble, with the former being kinetically persistent and C 2 selective under strongly reducing conditions. Nonmetallic boron sites on the surface copper boride are found to bind CO more strongly than copper sites, and mechanistic investigation of CO electroreduction pathways presents a surprisingly unconventional case of boron-centered reactivity in contrast to typical copper-centered reactivity. Neighboring boron sites present along boron chains on the surface copper boride are found to facilitate C−C coupling, thereby driving the high C 2 selectivity of this electrocatalyst.

Impact of toroidal magnetic field direction on integrated ELM-stable operation and divertor power exhaust via boron powder injection in EAST

We report the first in-depth comparison of the impact of toroidal magnetic field direction on solid boron injection used for Edge-Localized Mode (ELM) control, power exhaust, and core high-Z impurity control in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. With favorable ion ∇B drift towards the upper X-point in an upper-single-null configuration, boron injection effectively suppresses ELMs, produces a detachment of the inner divertor target, and leads to improved energy confinement. ELM suppression in this configuration is accompanied by the excitation of an Edge Harmonic Mode. In contrast, with unfavorable ion ∇B drift away from the upper X-point, boron injection also suppresses ELMs but leads to a more symmetric detachment state of both the inner and outer divertor targets, while plasma energy confinement is slightly degraded despite similar boron injection levels; a different low-frequency coherent mode without multiple harmonics is observed. Measurements from toroidally separated views show that the divertor response to boron injection is essentially toroidally symmetric, supporting the use of two-dimensional SOLPS-ITER modeling with a toroidally uniform impurity source. These experimental observations are qualitatively consistent with SOLPS-ITER simulations, which highlight the critical role of E × B drift effects in setting the Bt-dependent in–out asymmetry of detachment and in asymmetrically transporting particles and injected impurities within the scrape-off layer and private-flux region. These findings underscore the importance of drift physics and real-time wall conditioning in controlling low-Z impurity transport and optimizing edge solutions for integrated, ELM-stable, high-performance tokamak operation.

Boron-Based Neutron Scintillator Screens for Neutron Imaging

In digital neutron imaging, the neutron scintillator screen is a limiting factor of spatial resolution and neutron capture efficiency and must be improved to enhance the capabilities of digital neutron imaging systems. Commonly used neutron scintillators are based on 6 LiF and gadolinium oxysulfide neutron converters. This work explores boron-based neutron scintillators because 10 B has a neutron absorption cross-section four times greater than 6Li, less energetic daughter products than Gd and 6 Li, and lower γ-ray sensitivity than Gd. These factors all suggest that, although borated neutron scintillators may not produce as much light as 6 Li-based screens, they may offer improved neutron statistics and spatial resolution. This work conducts a parametric study to determine the effects of various boron neutron converters, scintillator and converter particle sizes, converter-to-scintillator mix ratio, substrate materials, and sensor construction on image quality. The best performing boron-based scintillator screens demonstrated an improvement in neutron detection efficiency when compared with a common 6 LiF/ZnS scintillator, with a 125% increase in thermal neutron detection efficiency and 67% increase in epithermal neutron detection efficiency. The spatial resolution of high-resolution borated scintillators was measured, and the neutron tomography of a test object was successfully performed using some of the boron-based screens that exhibited the highest spatial resolution. For some applications, boron-based scintillators can be utilized to increase the performance of a digital neutron imaging system by reducing acquisition times and improving neutron statistics.

Self‐consistent transport simulation of boron dust particle injection in the peripheral plasma in Large Helical Device

Abstract The trajectories and the ablation positions of boron dust particles dropped from an impurity powder dropper in the peripheral plasma in the Large Helical Device (LHD) were calculated using a three‐dimensional edge plasma simulation code (EMC3‐EIRENE) and a dust transport simulation code (DUSTT). The simulation shows that the trajectory of the boron dust particles is deflected at the upper divertor leg due to the effect of the hydrogen plasma flow, and the ablation positions of the dust particles in an ergodic layer change toward the outboard side of the torus for higher plasma densities. The effect of the boron ion flow in the divertor leg on the deflection is investigated by coupling the two codes self‐consistently. The simulation predicts that the boron ions in the divertor leg, which are produced by sputtering on the divertor plates, which do not affect the change in the ablation positions. It also shows that the ablation positions move toward the inboard side and approach the Last Closed Flux Surface (LCFS) in case of increased boron dust drop rates, which is caused by the lowered plasma flow in the upper divertor leg due to the lowered electron temperature by radiation cooling by the dropped dust particles.

Operando carbon corrosion measurements in fuel cells using boron-doped carbon supports

Carbonaceous materials are the most common catalyst supports in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFCs), yet their corrosion is one of the limiting factors in achieving high durability. Herein, we doped carbon supports with boron (B) to increase the corrosion-resistance of the support. Two types of B-doped carbons were synthesized and studied as platinum support materials. Further, they varied in their morphologies, surface areas, and the types of boron species. The durability of Pt/B-doped carbon catalysts was investigated using the US-DOE catalysts’ supports accelerated stress test (AST) and a mass-spectrometer connected to the fuel cell effluent stream to quantify the mass of corroded carbon support in operando. The addition of boron to the carbon increased the stability of Pt catalysts in long-term usage of PEMFC. After 4000 AST cycles, more than 50% of initial current density was preserved for the boron-containing systems, while less than 30% of it remained with Vulcan carbon (Pt/V). Also, the Pt/B-doped carbon samples demonstrated better electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) stability when compared to Pt/V. Carbon loss measurements showed that B-doped carbons have higher resistance to electrochemical corrosion than unmodified carbon. Specifically, the substitutional boron-doped carbon demonstrated an extremely high stability and low corrosion rate.

Structure, Stability, and Electronic Properties of Boron Suboxide: A Density Functional Theory Study

Boron suboxide (B 6 O) is a boron-rich compound derived from the α-rhombohedral boron lattice with extreme hardness and unusual semiconducting properties. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) was used to show that unit cell volume, mechanical strength, band gaps, and thermodynamic stabilities of B 6 O were influenced by the interstitial elements and point defects at the icosahedral sites. While the hexagonal unit cell volume (HUCV) varies with interstitial occupancy, it is the icosahedral defect that weakens the intrinsic bulk modulus of B 6 O. Using the hybrid HSE functional, we confirmed that the perfect B 6 O bulk is a p-type semiconductor with a direct band gap of 2.8 eV. Furthermore, by screening α-boron compounds systematically, we found that a simple octet rule may offer a consistent explanation for the variations in the computed electronic structures. The formation free energies calculated over a wide range of temperatures (0–2500 K) and pressures (0–80 GPa) predict that formations of interstitial defects become favorable only at higher temperatures (ca. 1800 K) in bulk B 6 O lattices. The nudged elastic band (NEB) method was employed to identify the minimum energy pathways for the diffusions of dislocated B and O atoms. The diffusion of icosahedral B atoms has an energy barrier of 0.16 eV. More complex B diffusion paths involving the reorganization of icosahedral boron atoms incur higher barriers (>1 eV). In contrast, the diffusion of interstitial O atoms is facile with a barrier of 0.4 eV. Lastly, successive O insertions into the α-B lattice were performed using DFT to generate a basic understanding of the oxidation process. Furthermore, these calculations provide fundamental atomistic insights into the growth of B 6 O crystals and control of their point defects.

Effect of electronic transitions on near edge optical properties of off-stoichiometric boron carbide thin films

In the present study, soft x-ray optical properties of off-stoichiometric boron carbide thin films are investigated, and the structure and chemical composition of the film is analyzed using angle dependent x-ray reflectivity and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. Energy dependent soft x-ray reflectivity measured at a fixed grazing angle of 1.5° is used to determine the optical constants in the boron K edge region by applying the Kramers–Kronig technique. The measured optical constants show near edge fine features corresponding to σ* and π* resonances. Furthermore, the electronic transitions corresponding to σ* resonance cause a 40%–75% increase in the delta value in the above boron K edge region. The π* transitions corresponding to off-stoichiometric nature of the boron carbide are observed in the absorption spectra near ~ 192.7 eV. Details of the measured soft x-ray optical properties of the off-stoichiometric boron carbide thin film are discussed.

Structural characterization of neutron irradiated hexagonal boron-10 nitride-15 single crystals

The negatively charged boron vacancy ($V$$^{–}_{⁠B}$⁠) in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a promising quantum defect that can be used to sense pressure, temperature, and magnetic field with high spatial resolution. hBN enriched with the boron-10 and nitrogen-15 isotopes, denoted h 10 B 15 N, has good contrast and coherence for quantum sensing because nitrogen-15 has nuclear spin (1/2), reducing hyperfine interactions. Boron vacancies can be generated by neutron irradiation, which causes the transmutation of the boron-10 isotope to lithium-7. In this study, the ancillary structural, compositional, and mechanical properties of h 10 B 15 N crystals that have been subjected to neutron irradiation fluences from 1.4 × 10 16 to 8.4 × 10 17 n/cm 2 were thoroughly characterized. Besides creating $V$$^{–}_{⁠B}$⁠, the process also induces other defects that generate strain in the crystal lattice. In turn, the mechanical properties of these crystals change drastically. Investigated here are the visual changes, lattice integrity, composition, crystal strain, and elastic constants (C 33 and C 66 ) to assess how these characteristics change as a function of neutron fluence.

Boron phosphide as a p-type transparent conductor: Optical absorption and transport through electron-phonon coupling

Boron phosphide has recently been identified as a potential high-hole-mobility transparent conducting material. This promise arises from its low hole effective masses. However, boron phosphide has a relatively small, 2 eV, indirect bandgap which will affect its transparency. In this study, we computationally study both optical absorption across the indirect gap and phonon-limited electronic transport to quantify the potential of boron phosphide as a p-type transparent conductor. We find that phonon-mediated indirect optical absorption is weak in the visible spectrum and that the phonon-limited hole mobility is very high (around 900 cm 2 /Vs) at room temperature. This exceptional mobility comes from the combination of a low hole effective mass and very weak scattering by polar phonon modes. We rationalize the weak scattering by the less ionic bonding in boron phosphide compared to oxides. We suggest that this could be a general advantage of nonoxides for p-type transparent conducting applications. Using our computed properties, we assess the transparent conductor figure of merit of boron phosphide and show that it exceeds by one order of magnitude that of established p-type transparent conductors, confirming the potential of this material.

Magnetostriction and temperature dependent Gilbert damping in boron doped Fe 80 ⁢Ga 20 thin films

Magnetic thin films with strong magnetoelastic coupling and low Gilbert damping are key materials for many magnetoelectric devices. Here, we investigated the effects of boron doping concentration on magnetostriction and temperature dependent Gilbert damping in magnetron sputtered (Fe 80 ⁢Ga 20 ) 1−𝑥 ⁢B 𝑥 films. A crystalline to amorphous structural transition was observed for a boron content near 8% and coincided with a decrease in coercivity from 76 Oe to 3 Oe. A 10% doping concentration is optimal for achieving both large magnetostriction of 48.8 ppm and low Gilbert damping of 6×10 −3 . The temperature dependence of the damping shows an increase at low temperatures with a peak around 40 K, and we associate the relative increase Δ⁢𝛼/𝛼 RT with magnetoelastic contributions to the damping, which has a maximum of 55.7% at 8% boron. An increase in the inhomogeneous linewidth broadening was observed in the structural transition regime at about 8% boron concentration. Furthermore, this study suggests that incorporation of glass forming elements, in this case boron, into Fe 80 ⁢Ga 20 is a practical pathway for simultaneously achieving enhanced magnetoelastic coupling and reduced Gilbert damping.

3D Printing of Inconel 718 with Enhanced Boron Composition as a Novel Solar Absorber Tube Material in the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) System

The growing demands for elevated efficiency in the solar energy industry led researchers to focus on the development of functional solar absorber tube material in concentrated solar power (CSP) systems, when molten salts are adopted as the heat transfer fluid. In this study, the typical solar absorber tube material, Inconel 718, was enhanced with boron to achieve a higher solar absorptivity in the visible light spectrum. Combined with an additive manufacturing (AM) method, the boron composition exceeded the traditional manufacturing limit of 60 ppm without microstructural defects. The boron-enhanced Inconel 718 exhibited a high solar absorptivity of nearly 90 % while maintaining a high thermal cycle fatigue resistance after thermal cycling treatment between 550°C and 720°C. The boron composition was increased to the manufacturing failure point, and the effects of different boron compositions on mechanical properties, microstructure, and optical properties were studied. The provided microstructure-property map in this study delivers high potentials of functional AM-printed alloy material in CSP applications.

Measurement of Boron by 3 He Nuclear Reaction Analysis

Reference samples with known boron coverage are needed for calibrating measurements of boron deposition in tokamaks where boron is used for wall conditioning to improve fusion plasma performance. This report summarizes recent work at the Sandia Ion Beam Laboratory to fabricate such reference samples. Rutherford backscattering and nuclear reaction analysis were used to determine the boron coverage on reference samples consisting of a thin layer of boron on a silicon substrate.

X-ray method shows fibers fail during fatigue of boron-epoxy laminates

A method proposed for studying progressive fiber fracture in boron-epoxy laminates during fatigue tests is described. It is based on the intensity of X-ray absorption of the tungsten core in the boron filaments as contrasted with that of the boron and epoxy matrix. When the laminate is X-rayed, the image of the tungsten in the born filaments is recorded on a photographic plate. Breaks in the boron laminates can be easily identified by magnifying the photographic plates. The method is suitable for studying broken boron filaments in most matrix materials, and may supply key information for developing realistic fatigue and fracture models.
