Window obscuration sensors for mobile gas and chemical imaging cameras

An infrared (IR) imaging system for determining a concentration of a target species in an object is disclosed. The imaging system can include an optical system including a focal plane array (FPA) unit behind an optical window. The optical system can have components defining at least two optical channels thereof, said at least two optical channels being spatially and spectrally different from one another. Each of the at least two optical channels can be positioned to transfer IR radiation incident on the optical system towards the optical FPA. The system can include a processing unit containing a processor that can be configured to acquire multispectral optical data representing said target species from the IR radiation received at the optical FPA. One or more of the optical channels may be used in detecting objects on or near the optical window, to avoid false detections of said target species.

Design and commissioning of resistive foil bolometer diagnostics on the ST40 tokamak

Following successful campaigns on the compact high field spherical tokamak ST40, resistive gold foil bolometers have now been installed to measure the radiated power profile. Positioned on the midplane, two bolometer cameras offer perspectives of the horizontal and vertical planes, while the third camera, situated above the midplane, provides a vertical view of the top divertor plates, including the X-point and the strike points. Further, these cameras use a commercial off-the-shelf data acquisition platform with modules specifically designed for bolometers in a Wheatstone bridge configuration, providing both phase sensitive detection and in situ calibration. This paper presents an overview of the design and functionality of all three cameras and the commissioning of the horizontal plane camera. The commissioning of the horizontal camera shows data from a range of plasma pulses, presenting a positive correlation between the relative profiles measured from the bolometer camera and an absolute extreme ultraviolet diode camera viewing along similar lines of sight.

Thermal images collected during large-scale 3D printing with Ingersoll MasterPrint

This data set contains images produced to test the performance of anomaly and fault detection methods in the context of additive manufacturing. Two print jobs were executed using the Ingersoll MasterPrint with the Model 30 Strangpresse extruder. The material used was Techmer compounded polylactic acid (PLA) with wood flour as a filler (80/20 PLA/WF by weight). The first print job consists of the 3D printing of a hexagonal cylinder with a two-bead wall. This print was sliced at a gantry velocity of 3000 millimeter per minute, and an extruder screw speed of 68.14 rotations per minute. This are considered the normal operating conditions. A second hexagonal cylinder was printed using a reduced extruder screw speed, 15% lower than under normal operating conditions. The images were collected with a Teledyne FLIR Lepton 3.5 infra-red camera, a small form factor radiometric long-wave infrared camera with a spectral range of 8 µm to 14 µm. Sensor resolution was 160x120 pixels, with a pixel size of 12 µm, a temperature range of -10 - 450°C, and an accuracy of +/- 10°C in its low gain configuration. Images in this data set were collected with cameras oriented at the printer nozzle. The nozzle camera setup consisted of two cameras located 12.5cm from the nozzle center. These were mounted directly to the print head, so that the camera positions relative to the print direction would remain constant as it rotated around its C-axis to follow the print path. One camera was placed ahead of the nozzle to capture the previous layer immediately before being covered by the new layer of material, while the second camera was placed behind the nozzle and captured the freshly extruded bead. Images are collecting during each phase of the print: (a) idle (i.e., no material deposited), (b) extrusion (i.e., to prime the extruder), and (c) printing (deposition of material to manufacture the hexagonal cylinder).

CHESS 2025: Orthorectified airborne RGB imagery from NEON AOP surveys

This dataset provides Level 1 (L1) and Level 3 (L3) orthorectified Red-Green-Blue (RGB) imagery collected for the 2025 Colorado Headwaters Ecological Spectroscopy Study (CHESS). This high-resolution imagery is a photographic record of red, green, and blue visible light from sunlight reflected off of the Earth’s surface. The data comprise full-color images of the ground surface and are primarily intended to provide context to imaging spectroscopy and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. The data were acquired over three study domains in the Upper Gunnison river basin: the upper East River watershed (CRBU); Almont Triangle and Taylor Canyon (ALMO); and Upper Taylor River watershed (UPTA) between 2025-06-13 and 2025-07-15. RGB images were acquired using the PhaseOne IXM-RS150F high-resolution digital camera onboard the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Airborne Observation Platform (AOP). The package data include both an L1 product comprising one camera frame per file and an L3 mosaic aligned to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 13N grid and the World Geodetic System (WGS) 84 projection. Both products are provided in geotif (.tif) format at 0.1 m ground resolution. The bulk of the imagery was collected during the main CHESS field campaign from June 13 to July 15, 2025. Additional images of a portion of the Upper Taylor (UPTA) domain were collected on September 18, 2025, to fill gaps in imagery identified after the main campaign was complete. RGB camera imagery is not radiometrically calibrated, and therefore pixel values should not be exploited for scientific analysis. Pixel values have undergone a manual adjustment to enhance feature identification. The imagery is rigorously geolocated which does allow for reliable geometric information to be retrieved. To generate the orthorectified imagery, the NEON AOP camera captured visible spectrum in red, green, and blue bands. The raw images were then processed using NEON’s camera orthorectification workflow. A boresight calibration flight was made to build a complete camera, distortion, and alignment model. Color balance/white balance and exposure correction were applied to the raw RGB images. The corrected images were orthorectified by ray-tracing image pixels to a lidar-derived digital surface model (DSM) mesh using the refined camera model, outputting orthorectified raster pixels on a regular grid. Flightline-level data were mosaicked by selecting per-pixel contributions from overlapping orthorectified images using line-of-sight (LOS) zenith angle minimization to reduce edge distortions. CHESS Project Description: The Colorado Headwaters Ecological Spectroscopy Study (CHESS) comprised a multi-week airborne remote sensing and field observation campaign in the Upper Gunnison Basin, Colorado, conducted in June and July of 2025. Airborne remote sensing was conducted by the National Ecological Observatory Network Airborne Observation Platform (NEON AOP), concurrent with a field campaign run by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL), the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Watershed Function Science Focus Area (SFA), and NASA-JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) program. Between June 10 and July 18, 2025, the NEON AOP flight team collected high-resolution aerial imaging spectroscopy and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data over three domains: the Upper East River (CRBU), Almont Triangle (ALMO), and the Upper Taylor Basin (UPTA). In coordination with the flights, a field campaign acquired ground-truth observations, including observations of vegetation composition, foliar traits, forest demography, and subsurface properties in 18 core sampling areas within the domains. Additional surface water observations were taken at over 380 point locations. All CHESS campaign datasets can be found within the CHESS ESS-DIVE data portal: https://data.ess-dive.lbl.gov/portals/chess. Swept-Lookback Deflectometry for High Performance Concentrating Solar Power Optical Metrology

This report describes an initial investigation into a proposed solution to the important problem of performing a detailed evaluation of heliostat optical performance, in situ in a heliostat field. Our approach is to place digital cameras in a position near the receiver where they look back toward the heliostat mirrors. The pixels of each camera sensor identify a set of small cells on the mirror surface, each corresponding to a “mixel.” By either passing reflected sunbeam over the camera or passing the camera through the reflected sunbeam, the cameras intercept sunlight reflected from each mixel. We then analyze the recorded video data to determine times when each mixel transitions from dark to light, and then back to dark. We then use these transitions to construct vectors from the camera to the mixel, and then from the mixel to the edge of the Sun at that moment. We then compute the surface normal at the mixel, which bisects the angle between these vectors. Performing this analysis for all mixels in the mirror yields a high-resolution map of slope across the mirror surface. We have implemented most of this process, successfully collecting data for an example heliostat facet and computing a preliminary estimated slope map. However, more work remains to complete this calculation, since certain factors and transformations are not yet included. Our observations so far support our hypothesis that such a system is possible, but we have not yet completed our quantitative evaluation of the concept.
