Acute Effects of Simulated Space Radiation and Micro-Gravity on Cancellous Bone Loss in Mice Tibiae

Space radiation and micro-gravity are the two major obstacles impeding human exploration of Mars and beyond. Long-duration space flights expose astronauts to high doses of high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation as well as prolonged periods of skeletal disuse due to weightlessness. One important consequence of both radiation exposure and micro-gravity is acute bone loss. However, biological responses to different radiation types and combined radiation and micro-gravity environments remain unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study is to compare the acute effects of different radiation species and simulated weightlessness on bone degeneration for the purpose of developing accurate risk assessments of prolonged space flight. Mouse models were used to simulate space flight-relevant doses of different radiation types as well as weightlessness via hind-limb unloading. Three groups of mice (n 9) were irradiated with 1 Gy (Gray) H+, 1 Gy 56Fe, and 1 Gy combined H+ and 56Fe (dual ion) respectively and compared to sham irradiated (n 9) and 2 Gy 56Fe irradiated positive controls (n 6). Two groups of mice (n 9) were hind-limb unloaded for three days and then either sham irradiated or dual ion irradiated respectively, followed by subsequent hind-limb unloading for 11 days. Cancellous tissue from tibiae metaphyses were harvested 11 days post-irradiation for ex vivo micro-computed tomography analysis. Microarchitecture parameters including bone volume to total volume ratio (BVTV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular spacing (Tb.S), and connectivity density (Conn.D) will be quantified using a novel automated segmentation procedure developed in our lab. The anticipated results will be instrumental in developing counter-measures against micro-gravity and radiation-induced bone loss. Moreover, possible synergistic effects may provide insight into underlying mechanisms mediating biological response.

Juno Trajectory Redesign Following PRM Cancellation

In October 2016, the Juno spacecraft was operating in 53.5-day capture orbits and final preparations were underway for a Period Reduction Maneuver (PRM) to achieve the planned 14-day science orbits. However, one week before PRM execution, a main engine propulsion system anomaly prompted an indefinite PRM delay and immediate updates to the Juno reference trajectory. This paper outlines stopgap trajectory design activities immediately following PRM delay and longer-term trajectory redesign considerations including various possible PRM epochs, orbit period, longitude grid characteristics, and eclipse avoidance strategies that culminated in the decision to cancel PRM and adopt a new 53-day reference trajectory.

Experimental investigation of wall shock cancellation and reduction of wall interference in transonic testing

A series of experiments were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of a three-dimensional land and groove wall geometry and a variable permeability distribution to reduce the interference produced by the porous walls of a supercritical transonic test section. The three-dimensional wall geometry was found to diffuse the pressure perturbations caused by small local mismatches in wall porosity permitting the use of a relatively coarse wall porosity control to reduce or eliminate wall interference effects. The wall porosity distribution required was found to be a sensitive function of Mach number requiring that the Mach number repeatability characteristics of the test apparatus be quite good. The effectiveness of a variable porosity wall is greatest in the upstream region of the test section where the pressure differences across the wall are largest. An effective variable porosity wall in the down stream region of the test section requires the use of a slightly convergent test section geometry.

Magneto-optic detection system with noise cancellation

In a magneto-optic readout system, a polarized beam of light from a laser is subjected to the magneto-optical effect of a magnetic record medium, and then passed through an analyzer which resolves the beam into two orthogonal vector components so oriented that the two components are of equal amplitude when the angle of rotation due to the magneto-optic effect is zero. Separate photodetectors produce two output signals which are proportional to the amplitudes of the vector components. The two output signals are combined in a differential amplifier through separate logarithmic transfer circuits to produce an output signal proportional to the ratio of the two original detector signals.

Cancellation of residual spacecraft accelerations for zero-G space physics experiments

The Drop Dynamics Module houses an acoustic positioning system which counteracts the effects of small accelerations of a spacecraft and thus allows long-term study of free-floating materials such as liquid drops. The acoustic positioning system provides an acoustic 'well' in the center of the experiment chamber. Data collection is by cinematographic photography. The module subsystems are discussed.

A decision-directed network for dual-polarization crosstalk cancellation

Frequency reuse in the specific form of dual-polarized microwave communication systems has grown in importance in recent years as a practical means of radio spectrum conservation. Ideally the capacity of a given frequency allocation can be doubled through dual-polarization. However, hardware imperfections and propagation effects, particularly rain depolarization, prevent the achievement of this doubling without severe system performance degradation. A decision-directed cross-polarization correction network is presented whose operation depends on only simple base-band signal processing. No pilot tones or frequency offsets are required. The loop can work with any two-dimensional signal set for digital data transmission. The loop has been experimentally verified and provides a means of doubling the data capacity with little performance degradation.

Channel capacity of an array system for Gaussian channels with applications to combining and noise cancellation

A closed-form expression for the capacity of an array of correlated Gaussian channels is derived. It is shown that when signal and noise are independent, the array of observables can be replaced with a single observable without diminishing the capacity of the array channel. Examples are provided to illustrate the dependence of channel capacity on noise correlation for two- and three-channel arrays.

Effects of Prostaglandin E2 and Risedronate Administration on Cancellous Bone in Older Female Rats

The effects of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and Risedronate (Ris) both separately and in combination (PGE2 + Ris) were studied on the intact aged female rat skeleton to determine whether the combination of PGE2 with an antiresorptive agent is more effective anabolically than PGE2 alone. Nine month-old Sprague-Dawley rats were injected subcutaneously either with vehicle, 6 mg PGE2/kg per day, 1 or 5 microgram Ris/kg twice a week, or 6 mg PGE2/kg per day plus 1 or 5 microgram Ris/kg twice a week (PGE2 + 1 Ris or PGE2 + 5 Ris) for 60 days. After the treatment, we determined the longitudinal bone growth rate, the qualitative appearance of the primary spongiosa (PS), and the static and dynamic bone histomorphometry of the secondary spongiosa (SS) of the proximal tibial metaphysis (PTM) by examining undecalcified longitudinal sections after double fluorescent labeling. The relative effects of these treatments on longitudinal bone growth were ranked as follows: PGE2 + 5 Ris greater than PGE2 + 1 Ris = basal greater than PGE2 greater than 1 microgram Ris = 5 microgram Ris = aging. The density of the PS was ranked as follows: PGE2 + 5 Ris greater than PGE2 + 1 Ris = PGE2 = 5 microgram Ris = 1 microgram Ris greater than basal = aging. The increase in density of the PS was the result of stimulated longitudinal growth and the action of bisphosphonate. Bone mass in the SS was ranked as follows: PGE2 + 5 Ris = PGE2 + 1 Ris = PGE2 greater than 5 microgram Ris = 1 microgram Ris = aging = basal. However, PGE2 alone and its cotreatment with Ris accumulated bone by different tissue mechanisms. PGE2 alone created new bone by increasing activation frequency 8.3-fold and the formation to resorption ratio 1.3-fold from the controls. The combination of PGE2 and Ris depressed activation frequency (-54% to -74%), and bone formation rate (tissue-based -31%, and bone-based -42%) and eroded surface (-79% to -81%), so as to increase the formation to resorption ratio (three- to four-fold) over PGE2 alone. The increased ratio was due primarily to a greater decrease in eroded perimeter than in labeled perimeter. The major finding of this study is that the combination of PGE2 and a bisphosphonate (Ris) is more anabolic than PGE2 or Ris alone when endochondral ossification is active, but PGE2 + Ris is no more anabolic than PGE2 alone in old bone without endochondral ossification. However, the tissue mechanisms by which PGE2 alone and PGE2 + Ris treatments accumulated bone differed in that the latter allowed the same bone mass to accumulate with lower levels of cell recruitment and activity.

Performance Modeling of a Pilot in a Free Flight Mode: A Free Flight Self-Separation Cancellations Due to the Requirement for Procedural Intervention - 1

Developments are being made that allow pilots to have more flexibility over the control of their aircraft. This new concept is called Free Flight. Free Flight strives to move the current air traffic system into an age where space technology is used to its fullest potential. Self-separation is one part of the Free Flight system. Self-separation provides pilots the opportunity to choose their own route to reach a specified destination provided that they maintain the 'minimum required separation distance between airplanes. In the event that pilots are unable to maintain separation, controllers will need to have the aircraft separation authority passed back to them. This situation is known as a procedural intervention point. This project attempted to examine and diagnose those particular situations in an effort to avoid reaching a procedural intervention point in the near future. Crews that reached procedural intervention points were compared with crews that made similar maneuver types in the same scenario, but did not reach procedural intervention points. Results showed that there were no significant differences between crews in a high-density acute angle flight conditions. However, significant differences in maneuver times, following the detection of an intruder aircraft and following the time the intruder aircraft came into view, were found in a low-density, acute angle scenario.
