Apollo telescope mount SEC camera tube spares program

An important engineering improvement was made during the Spares Program. The thermionic cathode structure was modified to bring the cathode temperature to a more suitable value and shields were placed over the glass-to-metal interface of the stem leads to reduce the possibility of interelectrode leakage. The cathode temperature change has resulted in a corresponding change in the recommended operating conditions for the heater of the thermionic cathode. All tubes built during the 1972-1973 ATM Spares Program should be operated with a heater current of 150 mA (6.3 volts). Operation at lower currents and voltages adversely affects the life of these tubes.

Ultrahigh Areal Capacity Holey Graphene Air Cathodes for Li-O2 and Li-CO2 Batteries

Advanced lithium (Li) batteries using gaseous cathode reactants such as oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2)are attractive energy storage platforms because the gases are obtained externally and thus not accounted for in the total battery weight when fully charged.The discharge products at the cathode, typically Li2O2 for Li-O2 batteries and Li2CO3 for Li-CO2 batteries, are insoluble in the electrolyte.Therefore, in order for such batteries to function properly, an “air cathode”,which is a conductive scaffold within the battery cell,is required as a physical location for cathode electrochemical reactions to occur. Prior research has identified many carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene as viable choices for air cathode scaffold, while various metallic and metal-free catalytic systems integrated onto carbon-based air cathodes have been developed to improve the sluggish discharge and charge reactions. For future practical applications, the air cathode must exhibit a usable capacity per unit electrode area, or areal capacity, a critical parameter that has been largely overlooked so far in this field. In order to achieve high areal capacity, the air cathode must exhibit a sufficient amount of accessible void volume per unit electrode area while maintaining the conductive scaffold integrity during the entire electrochemical process. Here we present an ultrathick,holey graphene-based air cathode platform fabricated from a facile dry compression process that exhibits remarkable areal capacity values. Holey graphene is a carbon nanomaterial derived from graphene, but with nanometer sized holes through the nanosheet thickness.The presence of these holes enhances mass transport through electrode thickness and also enables the unique dry-press fabrication process that is not achievable using other carbon scaffold materials.The dry-pressed holey graphene air cathode platform is not only compatible with catalyst incorporation to improve battery reaction kinetics, but also allows for novel engineering of electrode architectures that is not achievable using conventional electrode fabrication approaches.The applications of such highly versatile, ultrahigh areal capacity air cathode platforms to both Li-O2 and Li-CO2 battery chemistries will be discussed.

Environmental Testing of the NEXT PM1R Ion Engine

The NEXT propulsion system is an advanced ion propulsion system presently under development that is oriented towards robotic exploration of the solar system using solar electric power. The subsystem includes an ion engine, power processing unit, feed system components, and thruster gimbal. The Prototype Model engine PM1 was subjected to qualification-level environmental testing in 2006 to demonstrate compatibility with environments representative of anticipated mission requirements. Although the testing was largely successful, several issues were identified including the fragmentation of potting cement on the discharge and neutralizer cathode heater terminations during vibration which led to abbreviated thermal testing, and generation of particulate contamination from manufacturing processes and engine materials. The engine was reworked to address most of these findings, renamed PM1R, and the environmental test sequence was repeated. Thruster functional testing was performed before and after the vibration and thermal-vacuum tests. Random vibration testing, conducted with the thruster mated to the breadboard gimbal, was executed at 10.0 Grms for 2 min in each of three axes. Thermal-vacuum testing included three thermal cycles from 120 to 215 C with hot engine re-starts. Thruster performance was nominal throughout the test program, with minor variations in a few engine operating parameters likely caused by facility effects. There were no significant changes in engine performance as characterized by engine operating parameters, ion optics performance measurements, and beam current density measurements, indicating no significant changes to the hardware as a result of the environmental testing. The NEXT PM1R engine and the breadboard gimbal were found to be well-designed against environmental requirements based on the results reported herein. The redesigned cathode heater terminations successfully survived the vibration environments. Based on the results of this test program and confidence in the engineering solutions available for the remaining findings of the first test program, specifically the particulate contamination, the hardware environmental qualification program can proceed with confidence

Mechanical and Electrochemical Implications of Drying Temperature on Lithium‐Ion Battery Electrodes

Abstract Lithium‐ion battery (LIB) electrodes are typically produced with n‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone, a toxic solvent that is a known carcinogen and reproductive hazard. Accordingly, aqueous processing has been an expanding area of research interest in the field of LIB manufacturing. Although aqueous processing has been widely successful in anode processing, serious challenges remain in processing the cathode. In this work, the drying mechanics of cathode processed with both solvents is investigated though implementation of a chemical‐engineering‐based model to better understand the utilization of heat provided by experimentally determining the heat and mass transfer coefficients. Electrochemical performance is also evaluated to determine the impact of drying temperature on cycling performance. Binder distribution is determined via various methods to confirm differences in binder homogeneity as a function of both solvent and drying temperature. Identified is the large difference in the efficiency in which the heat is used as well as an ideal drying temperature for both aqueous and non‐aqueous processed cathodes. Also identified is the increased sensitivity to processing temperature for aqueous processed electrodes compared to non‐aqueous processed counterparts, pointing to the possibility of tuned drying regimes which would capitalize on the potential cost savings of aqueous processing for cathodes.

Effect of the Thermal Stability and Reactivity of Fullerenes on Ion Engine Propellant Applications

Because vapor phase fullerene molecules collide with high temperature surfaces at both the cathode in DC discharges and at the walls of vapor sources, knowledge of the thermal stability and material compatibility of fullerenes is important for ion thruster applications. Here, we present a study of the high temperature behavior of fullerenes. We find that when C 60 and C 7O are maintained at temperatures above 1073 K, or are wxposed to hot metal surfaces, significant degradation occurs. We find an activation energy of 261.5 kJ/mol for this process. At temperatures below 873 K, no breakdown of fullerenes can be detected, even after heating for 6 hours. The effect of these findings on C 60 ion thruster design is discussed. Our present C 60 ion thruster experiment is also described.

Impacts of Lanthanum Impurities on Nickel-Rich Cathode Materials

The widespread use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has led to environmental concerns and exacerbated the scarcity of essential minerals, underscoring the urgent need for effective recycling strategies. Among various recycling methods, the hydrometallurgical process is distinguished by its energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries are a significant source of nickel sulfate (NiSO 4 ) for hydrometallurgical recycling due to their substantial nickel content. A significant challenge arises from the effective separation of lanthanum (La), which results in at least 20 ppm of La being present in the recycled NiSO 4 . This study explores a critical aspect of the recycling process: the impact of La 3+ impurities, introduced through recycled NiSO 4 , on the performance of the synthesized nickel-rich cathode materials. We conducted a thorough investigation into how La 3+ influences morphology and structural integrity during both the synthesis of precursors and the production of cathode materials. Our findings indicate that La 3+ impurities do not adversely affect the morphology or structural integrity of the cathode precursors relative to virgin materials. However, higher concentrations of La 3+ reduce the discharge capacity with enhanced cycle stability by minimizing cation mixing between lithium (Li + ) and nickel (Ni 2+ ) ions within the cathode. Furthermore, this stability is crucial for extending battery life. Therefore, controlling the concentration of La 3+ impurities is essential for optimizing the electrochemical performance of recycled cathode materials.

Coherent Strain-Inhibiting Phase Construction of Lithium-Rich Manganese-Based Oxide Toward High Mechanochemical Stability

A layered lithium-rich manganese-based oxide cathode, containing $R\overline{3}m$ (LiTMO 2 , TM = Mn, Ni, Co) and $C2/m$ (Li 2 MnO 3 ) nanodomains, utilizes both transition metals and oxygen redox to yield substantial energy density. However, the inherent heterogeneous nature and distinct nanodomain redox chemistries of layered lithium-rich oxides will inevitably cause pernicious lattice strain and structural displacement, which can hardly be eliminated by conventional doping or coating strategies and result in accelerated performance decay. Herein, we incorporate a strain-inhibiting perovskite phase coherently grown within the layered structure to effectively restrain the displacement and lattice strain during uneven Li-ion extraction. The enhanced mechanochemical stability of the designed cathode benefits the persistent structure and reversible oxygen redox, thereby achieving high initial Coulombic efficiency and stable cycling and voltage profiles. In conclusion, our approach of lattice engineering alleviates the strain and displacement caused by inhomogeneous reactivity between heterogeneous nanodomains and promotes the development of advanced cathode materials with long durability.

Computational Analysis of Anode and Cathode Structuring Effects on Charge and Discharge in Graphite|LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 Batteries

Structured electrodes (SEs) improve the rate capability of Lithium-ion batteries by engineering micrometer-scale electrolyte regions into the electrode, promoting rapid ionic transport. Prior research has focused on structuring one electrode (anode or cathode) with an analysis on either the charge or discharge performance. We present a holistic study using three-dimensional models to investigate the isolated effects of structuring either electrode and the combined effects of structuring both electrodes on the charge and discharge capacity of single-layer cells at 4 C and 6 C. Volumetric and gravimetric discharge energy density (Wh/L stack and Wh/kg stack ) and charge capacity (Ah/kg stack and Ah/L stack ) are evaluated for multi-layer pouch cell stacks. Pairing SE anodes with SE cathodes demonstrated improvements up to 15% in discharge Wh/kg stack and up to 33% in charge Ah/kg stack over a conventional cell; Energy required to charge per Ah/kg stack was improved by 13%–14%. SE cathodes paired with a conventional anode exhibited improvements of 0.3%–22% across all performance metrics evaluated. Conversely, pairing a SE anode with a conventional cathode demonstrated improved charge capacity up to 13% but showed a 2%–23% lower discharge energy density. The importance of aligning SEs in a cell from a performance and manufacturing perspective is also analyzed.

Operando neutron imaging-guided gradient design of Li-ion solid conductor for high-mass-loading cathodes

High-mass-loading cathodes are crucial for achieving high energy density in all-solid-state batteries from the lab scale to industry. However, as mass-loading increases, electrochemical performance is significantly compromised due to sluggish kinetics. In this work, operando neutron imaging is deployed on a high-mass-loading NMC 811 cathode of 33 mg/cm 2 (5.0 mAh/cm 2 ) and directly visualizes the lithiation prioritization of the cathode active material (CAM) from the solid electrolyte membrane side to the current collector side. In addition to the tortuosity, another key limitation on ion transfer in the cathode arises from the mismatch between the uniform distribution of the solid electrolyte (catholyte) in the conventional composite cathode and the non-uniform Li + flux generated by the faradaic reaction of CAMs. Therefore, we engineer a gradient in the catholyte concentration to match the Li + flux distribution as a means of eliminating the ion transfer obstacle. This approach demonstrates enhanced rate performance, even with high-mass-loading cathodes. A LiCoO 2 composite cathode with 100 mg/cm 2 high-mass-loading exhibits an areal capacity of 10.4 mAh/cm 2 at a current density of 2.25 mA/cm 2 . This work provides insight into the ion-transport limitation in thick cathodes and demonstrates an effective gradient design to overcome the kinetic barrier and achieve high battery performance.

Barium Depletion in Hollow Cathode Emitters

The effect of tungsten erosion, transport and redeposition on the operation of dispenser hollow cathodes was investigated in detailed examinations of the discharge cathode inserts from an 8200 hour and a 30,352 hour ion engine wear test. Erosion and subsequent re-deposition of tungsten in the electron emission zone at the downstream end of the insert reduces the porosity of the tungsten matrix, preventing the ow of barium from the interior. This inhibits the interfacial reactions of the barium-calcium-aluminate impregnant with the tungsten in the pores. A numerical model of barium transport in the internal xenon discharge plasma shows that the barium required to reduce the work function in the emission zone can be supplied from upstream through the gas phase. Barium that flows out of the pores of the tungsten insert is rapidly ionized in the xenon discharge and pushed back to the emitter surface by the electric field and drag from the xenon ion flow. This barium ion flux is sufficient to maintain a barium surface coverage at the downstream end greater than 0.6, even if local barium production at that point is inhibited by tungsten deposits. The model also shows that the neutral barium pressure exceeds the equilibrium vapor pressure of the impregnant decomposition reaction over much of the insert length, so the reactions are suppressed. Only a small region upstream of the zone blocked by tungsten deposits is active and supplies the required barium. These results indicate that hollow cathode failure models based on barium depletion rates in vacuum dispenser cathodes are very conservative.

Toward Stable, High‐Energy, Partially Disordered Mn‐Rich Spinel Cathodes by Revealing and Mitigating Surface Degradation

Mn-rich cathodes balance performance and sustainability but suffer from limited cyclability due to Mn dissolution and cathode-to-anode crosstalk. The Jahn-Teller (J-T) effect of Mn 3+ is often linked to the above phenomena, such as in spinel LiMn 2 O 4 . However, in typical voltage ranges, significant Mn 3+ only appears near the end of discharge, highlighting the need to reassess its role in driving Mn dissolution, structural degradation, and battery performance. Here, the spinel cathode's degree of disorder is tailored to expand the Mn redox range, enabling segmentation into J-T active and less active voltage ranges. Cycling at segmented voltage windows reveals surface degradation mechanisms with and without the major J-T effect. Despite a stronger J-T effect below 3.6 V vs. Li/Li + , Mn dissolution is less significant than above 3.6 V. Expanding the cycling window to 2.0–4.3 V causes severe degradation as the J-T active range induces a tetragonal phase and Mn 2+ -rich surface, driving Mn dissolution and consuming Li-ion inventory in full cells. Reducing electrolyte acidity minimizes Mn 3+ disproportionation, enabling a stable dopant-free Mn-only cathode with a 250 mAh g −1 specific capacity. These findings demonstrate that full cells using Mn-rich cathodes have the potential to avoid the notorious crosstalk problem through electrolyte engineering.

Reliable and Efficient Electrochemical Recovery of O 2 from Metabolic CO 2 at the International Space Station (ISS)

Maximum O 2 recovery from metabolic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is desired for future long-duration missions beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The O 2 recovery for the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) at the International Space Station (ISS), presently limited to 50% (Sabatier), must be highly reliable and efficient and recover a minimum of 75% oxygen (O 2 ) from metabolic CO 2 . An alternative technology development effort currently underway at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) via a Microfluidic Electrochemical Reactor (MFECR) approach has the potential to increase O 2 recovery significantly and reduce the complexity of the ECLSS O 2 recovery at the ISS as it would replace three pieces, the CO 2 Reduction Assembly (CRA) (Sabatier reactor), the Oxygen Generation Assembly (OGA), and the Plasma Pyrolysis Assembly (PPA). The MFECR's electrochemical process generates ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) and carbon moxide (CO) instead of methane (CH 4 ) (Sabatier) as a byproduct, eliminating the need for further dehydrogenation through the PPA. As in the OGA, the MFECR's electrochemical process generates O 2 and hydrogen (H 2 ) from the water electrolysis process. MSFC and the University of Texas in Arlington (UTA) have jointly designed and fabricated an MFECR's single cell that operates at ambient conditions and utilizes a proprietary catalysis highly selective on reducing CO 2 to C 2 H 4 and CO at the cathode. This MFECR's single cell consists of gas diffusion layers at the cathode and anode for respective intake of CO 2 and output of O 2 from the catalytic layer. This approach is expected to substantially improve the ISS ECLSS sustainability and reduce power and weight requirements as the MFECR would replace three units currently installed in the ISS. In this paper, the authors discuss the outcome of preliminary tests, the current development, and the evaluation efforts on different alternatives for the cathode and the anode configurations, the setup of the MFECR at an engineering development unit (EDU) scale, and the O 2 recovery performance, and evaluation efforts on different alternatives on not only the configuration and setup of the MFECR at an Engineering Design Unit (EDU) scale but also the selection of component materials.

Test bed ion engine development

A test bed ion (TBI) engine was developed to serve as a tool in exploring the limits of electrostatic ion thruster performance. A description of three key ion engine components, the decoupled extraction and amplified current (DE-AC) accelerator system, field enhanced refractory metal (FERM) hollow cathode and divergent line cusp (DLC) discharge chamber, whose designs and operating philosophies differ markedly from conventional thruster technology is given. Significant program achievements were: (1) high current density DE-AC accelerator system operation at low electric field stress with indicated feasibility of a 60 mA/sq cm argon ion beam; (2) reliable FERM cathode start up times of 1 to 2 secs. and demonstrated 35 ampere emission levels; (3) DLC discharge chamber plasma potentials negative of anode potential; and (4) identification of an efficient high plasma density engine operating mode. Using the performance projections of this program and reasonable estimates of other parameter values, a 1.0 Newton thrust ion engine is identified as a realizable technology goal. Calculations show that such an engine, comparable in beam area to a J series 30 cm thruster, could, operating on Xe or Hg, have thruster efficiencies as high as 0.76 and 0.78 respectively, with a 100 eV/ion discharge loss.

Space Station Cathode Design, Performance, and Operating Specifications

A plasma contactor system was baselined for the International Space Station (ISS) to eliminate/mitigate damaging interactions with the space environment. The system represents a dual-use technology which is a direct outgrowth of the NASA electric propulsion program and, in particular, the technology development efforts on ion thruster systems. The plasma contactor includes a hollow cathode assembly (HCA), a power electronics unit, and a xenon gas feed system. Under a pre-flight development program, these subsystems were taken to the level of maturity appropriate for transfer to U.S. industry for final development. NASA's Lewis Research Center was subsequently requested by ISS to manufacture and deliver the engineering model, qualification model, and flight HCA units. To date, multiple units have been built. One cathode has demonstrated approximately 28,000 hours lifetime, two development unit HCAs have demonstrated over 10,000 hours lifetime, and one development unit HCA has demonstrated more than 32,000 ignitions. All 8 flight HCAs have been manufactured, acceptance tested, and are ready for delivery to the flight contractor. This paper discusses the requirements, mechanical design, performance, operating specifications, and schedule for the plasma contactor flight HCAs.

Performance Evaluation of a 50kW Hall Thruster

An experimental investigation was conducted on a laboratory model Hall thruster designed to operate at power levels up to 50 kW. During this investigation the engine's performance was characterized over a range of discharge currents from 10 to 36 A and a range of discharge voltages from 200 to 800 V Operating on the Russian cathode a maximum thrust of 966 mN was measured at 35.6 A and 713.0 V. This corresponded to a specific impulse of 3325 s and an efficiency of 62%. The maximum power the engine was operated at was 25 kW. Additional testing was conducted using a NASA cathode designed for higher current operation. During this testing, thrust over 1 N was measured at 40.2 A and 548.9 V. Several issues related to operation of Hall thrusters at these high powers were encountered.
