Baseline vs. DER Scenario

Projections and associated uncertainty estimates are generated for a variety of user-selectable EV charging sessions, electricity tariffs, subsidy levels, revenue schemes, charging station configurations, and on-site solar and/or storage options. The outputs are presented in CHIP's web portal browser in the form of easily interpretable graphics (interactive graphs and bar charts) that facilitate convenient comparison among different scenarios to aid decision-making. The user should bring assumptions for modeling on simulation planning horizon, number of EV charging sessions per year, electricity costs (energy and demand charge rates; flat versus time-of-use rate), site capital costs (equipment for EV chargers and transformer), solar PV, and battery energy storage (kW).

High-Performance Passivating Contacts for Si PV Based on Engineered, Doped Nanopinholes through Dielectric Layers

We present a novel, industrially relevant method to fabricate high-performance poly-Si passivating contacts for Si PV. Passivating contacts based on SiOx/poly-Si layer stacks have been implemented in record-efficiency homojunction Si solar cells. In this technology, the carrier transport through a surface-passivating SiOx is enabled either by quantum-tunneling or nanopinholes. The doped poly-Si layer provides charge-carrier selectivity. Previously, the ISFH research group demonstrated a record 26.1% efficient Si homojunction cell, where transport pinholes in ~2 nm SiOx were produced by thermal breakdown at > 1000 degrees C, which is hard to control and is surface morphology-dependent. At room temperature, our new process uses electroless plating of Ag nanoparticles, followed by metal-assisted chemical etching. Nanogalvanic corrosion yields < 20 nm-wide nanopinholes in an insulating > 2 nm SiOx layer. The nanopinholes are filled by a heavily doped a-Si:H overlayer. We drive in the dopants into the Si wafer with subsequent high-temperature annealing. Preferential incorporation of dopants at pinhole locations results in nanoscale p+/n or n+/n junctions near the wafer interface. Each heavily-doped nanoscale pinhole junction collects and transports photogenerated carriers to the cell metal contacts. The density of the engineered nanopinholes can be tuned over a wide range which is critical for optimization of device performance. The same nanogalvanic corrosion principles can be applied to produce doped transport pinholes in well-passivating thick dielectric SiOx/SiNy stacks. Importantly, our process does not rely on thermal breakdown of the dielectric layers and can be applied to textured wafers resulting in Si solar cells with > 20% conversion efficiency.

Efficiency corrections for factorial moments and cumulants of overlapping sets of particles

In this note we discuss subtleties associated with the efficiency corrections for measurements of off-diagonal cumulants and factorial moments for a situation when one deals with overlapping sets of particles, such as correlations between numbers of protons and positively charged particles. In particular, we discuss the situation commonly encountered in heavy-ion experiments, where first all charges are reconstructed and then protons are selected from these charges by an additional particle identification procedure. We present the efficiency correction formulas for the case when the detection efficiencies follow a binomial distribution.

Charge-Transfer States Enable Spin-Selective Formation of Quartet State Qudits in Luminescent Radical-Chromophore Dyads

Luminescent tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM) radicals are promising doublet emitters that have been used to generate spin-optical interfaces in molecular electron spin qudits. In particular, photoexcitation of covalent TTM-chromophore dyads can generate quartet spin states that can be detected via photoluminescence. However, the mechanism of quartet spin initialization is complicated by competing charge-transfer (CT) and energy-transfer (EnT) pathways between the radical and the chromophore. Here, we demonstrate the role of CT intermediates by engineering a covalent dyad of TTM and naphthalene-(1,4:5,8)-bis(dicarboximide) (NDI), a well-known electron acceptor chromophore. Transient absorption spectroscopy indicates that photoexcitation of TTM results in ultrafast electron transfer from 2* TTM to NDI, which kinetically outcompetes EnT. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals that charge recombination proceeds via spin–orbit charge-transfer intersystem crossing to generate 3* NDI, followed by spin mixing with 2TTM to form the quartet state. Furthermore, this process uniquely spin-polarizes the quartet state, providing fundamental design principles to purify the initial wave function for quantum information processing.

A novel method for co-optimizing battery sizing and charging strategy of battery electric bus fleets: An application to the city of Paris

Battery-electric buses (BEBs) are a promising technology for replacing diesel buses and reducing their environmental burden. However, their charging process can take several hours, depending on the charging technique and strategy, making them susceptible to schedule disruptions. Furthermore, the selection of the charging strategy and battery size can increase the total capital investment and operational expenses of a BEB fleet, which is a major obstacle to its adoption. Therefore, to minimize the total cost of ownership (TCO) and prevent schedule disruptions, it is essential to establish a well-defined approach to determine an appropriate battery size and charging strategy for BEB fleets. This paper presents a method for reducing the TCO of BEB by determining the optimal battery size and charging strategy for each bus while satisfying operating constraints. The method involves a two-step optimization algorithm that uses Dynamic Programming and Genetic Algorithm. Further, the study applies this approach to the bus fleet serving line 21 in Paris and generates the optimal battery sizing, charging strategy, and required charging infrastructure. The results indicate that 100 kWh batteries offer the best trade-off between capital and operational expenditure for the fleet deployment if used with 65–85 kW chargers at bus terminals.

Pulse generator

A pulse shaping device includes an inductor that is selectively output-coupled to a first port of a capacitor. The inductor is charged to a selected current throughput and then coupled to the first port to generate a first characteristic within the current flowing at a second port of the capacitor. The capacitor is charged until reaching a clamping voltage at the first port. A voltage clamp of the shaping device clamps the first port of the capacitor at the clamping voltage to generate a second characteristic within the current flowing at a second port of the capacitor.

Modeling separation of lanthanides via heterogeneous ligand binding

Individual lanthanide elements have physical/electronic/magnetic properties that make each useful for specific applications. Several of the lanthanides cations (Ln 3+ ) naturally occur together in the same ores. They are notoriously difficult to separate from each other due to their chemical similarity. Predicting the Ln 3+ differential binding energies (ΔΔE) or free energies (ΔΔG) at different binding sites, which are key figures of merit for separation applications, will help design of materials with lanthanide selectivity. We apply ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) to calculate ΔΔG for Ln 3+ coordinated to ligands in water and embedded in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and ΔΔE for Ln 3+ bonded to functionalized silica surfaces, thus circumventing the need for the computational costly absolute binding (free) energies ΔG and ΔE. Perturbative AIMD simulations of water-inundated simulation cells are applied to examine the selectivity of ligands towards adjacent Ln 3+ in the periodic table. Static DFT calculations with a full Ln 3+ first coordination shell, while less rigorous, show that all ligands examined with net negative charges are more selective towards the heavier lanthanides than a charge-neutral coordination shell made up of water molecules. Amine groups are predicted to be poor ligands for lanthanide-binding. Finally, we also address cooperative ion binding, i.e., using different ligands in concert to enhance lanthanide selectivity.
