Collaborative Research: Louis Stokes Regional Center of Excellence: Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence (LSMRCE) for Broadening Participation in STEM

The Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence (LSMRCE) for Broadening Participation in STEM, a partnership of Chicago State University (CSU), aimed to increase the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students graduating with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degrees and matriculating into graduate STEM programs. As a member institution of the LSMRCE, Fermi Research Alliance, LLC, (Fermilab) looked to support its continued mission of increasing URM student participation in its Summer Internship in Science and Technology (SIST) internship program. The program provided URMs with access to research skills development, mentoring and professionalization activities via paid, summer research internships at Fermilab. Students received instruction and mentoring while gaining exposure to a global laboratory workforce and community with diverse academic and professional expertise. In addition, students established professional relationships and networked with senior researchers, early career scientists, technical professionals, post-docs and other undergraduate interns to help forge collaboration, innovation and mentoring opportunities at Fermilab and LSMRCE partner institutions

A core lighting curriculum for university students and lighting professionals

Here, in collaboration with a group of lighting professionals, learning outcomes were defined, prioritized, organized and mapped to a three-course sequence of lighting courses within a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering degree programme. Syllabi and educational exercises were developed to support the learning outcomes – including classroom activities, homework assignments and design projects. The learning exercises balance the technical foundations of applied illuminating engineering with the artistic aspects of applied lighting design and are intended to promote significant and lasting learning by providing students with education that is useful and relevant to current lighting practice. The process for identifying and prioritizing lighting content is described, a process that could be adapted by other lighting educators to other pedagogical contexts. The syllabi and learning exercises are disseminated for reuse or adaptation, or for self-study by independent learners.

Casing Annulus Monitoring of CO 2 Injection Using Wireless Autonomous Distributed Sensor Networks

Effective and secure carbon subsurface storage, involving the deep underground injection of CO 2 into geological formations where it is permanently trapped, is paramount to mitigating CO 2 emissions (Figure I). Ensuring the integrity of these storage sites and detecting potential leakage through the casing annulus necessitates robust monitoring. This work provides the first integrated demonstration of a wireless casing-annulus monitoring architecture that can operate in highly attenuating cement-brine environments relevant to CO 2 storage. This project focused on developing and validating a novel sensor system for integration with autonomous monitoring near the cement reservoir interface. The goal was a fully integrated Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4/5 field validation of a distributed wireless intelligent sensor system providing real-time, direct subsurface formation measurements to enhance fluid movement monitoring in the cemented casing annulus. Achieving this objective required the development and integration of 1) wireless autonomous microsensor technology by California Institute of Technology (Caltech); 2) sensor packaging and emplacement technology by Research Triangle Institute (RTI); and 3) smart well completions using wireless active casing collars and NOV pipe by the Sandia National Lab (SNL). The collaboration with the Caltech team in this project aimed to develop millimeter-scale radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors capable of detecting CO 2 , pH, and/or methane levels. These sensors are engineered to be impervious to fluids, allowing them to be mixed with cement and installed within the casing annulus. They operate using RFID protocols at frequencies of 902–928 MHz for both power and communication. A Sandia National Laboratories’ team engaged their expertise in the development of a Smart Collar system designed for the wireless data collection from these RFID sensors embedded in the cement annulus and transmission of this information to the ground surface via IntelliPipe/IntelliServ NOV drill pipe. This is accomplished through inductive coupling at the collar, which facilitates data transfer through each segment of the pipe. Because the system cannot transmit a direct current signal to power the Smart Collar, both power and communication were implemented using alternating current and electromagnetic signals at varying frequencies. Furthermore, the developed microsensor technology had to be demonstrated and validated in comparison with reference transducer measurements in a field test site at The University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin). Although the full sensor suite did not reach field-deployment readiness, the system-level integration achieved in this project establishes a validated pathway for future incorporation of advanced microsensors.

On-chip frequency-bin quantum photonics

Abstract Frequency-bin encoding furnishes a compelling pathway for quantum information processing systems compatible with established lightwave infrastructures based on fiber-optic transmission and wavelength-division multiplexing. Yet although significant progress has been realized in proof-of-principle tabletop demonstrations, ranging from arbitrary single-qubit gates to controllable multiphoton interference, challenges in scaling frequency-bin processors to larger systems remain. In this Perspective, we highlight recent advances at the intersection of frequency-bin encoding and integrated photonics that are fundamentally transforming the outlook for scalable frequency-based quantum information. Focusing specifically on results on sources, state manipulation, and hyperentanglement, we envision a possible future in which on-chip frequency-bin circuits fulfill critical roles in quantum information processing, particularly in communications and networking.

Do Research Software Engineers and Software Engineering Researchers Speak the Same Language?

Anecdotal evidence suggests that research software engineers (RSEs) and software engineering researchers (SERs) often use different terminologies for similar concepts, creating communication challenges. To better understand these divergences, we have started investigating how software engineering fundamentals from the SER community are interpreted within the RSE community, identifying aligned concepts, knowledge gaps, and areas for potential adaptation. In conclusion, our preliminary findings reveal opportunities for mutual learning and collaboration, and our systematic methodology for terminology mapping provides a foundation for a crowdsourced extension and validation in the future.

Abstract for CRADA between National Energy Technology Laboratory and Shell International Exploration & Production, Inc

Introducing CO₂ into geothermal systems as a working fluid in reservoirs can enhance geothermal conductivity, production, and pressure maintenance. A cross-disciplinary interaction of geothermal reservoir stimulation and CO₂ utilization satisfies renewable energy demands and operations that support sustainable energy infrastructure. Challenges to implementing CO₂-stimulated geothermal enhancement (CS-GE) include (1) accurately characterizing and imaging CO₂-stimulated geothermal reservoirs; (2) quantitatively inferring CS-GE evolution under current and future engineered conditions for cost effective operations; and (3) monitoring resources by improving observational methods to advance the understanding of complex geothermal systems for sweep efficiency and, ultimately, cost effectiveness. NETL and Shell will collaborate under this CRADA to develop software to image key features, including CO₂-stimulated fracture imaging, CO₂ fluid sweep imaging and heat transfer and exchange imaging by leveraging available datasets and applying advanced Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), multi-level data analytics and data/information fusion to better understand the comprehensive mechanisms of CO₂-stimulated geothermal systems.

Towards Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) Centers of Excellence

A diverse portfolio of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies will be essential to meeting climate goals while supporting sustainable development. In particular, marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) methods can help diversify the existing portfolio, which currently relies heavily on engineered direct air capture systems for large-scale atmospheric removals. To fulfill their potential in the CDR ecosystem, these early-stage mCDR technologies require additional research and development. Here, we propose regional mCDR Technology Centers of Excellence that will provide inventors and developers with access to right-scale facilities and engineering expertise that will meet their needs wherever they are on the journey from bench- to pilot-scale development. To support innovation across the technological readiness level spectrum, these Centers will provide collaborative access to ocean-based mCDR testing sites; other opportunities for partnering with multidisciplinary experts in technology development and commercialization; provide meaningful pathways for integrated engagement with local industrial and regulatory systems; and help in developing tailored, impactful community benefit models. Ideal sites are co-located in areas with a favorable natural environment for testing mCDR, well studied baselines, accessible infrastructure for multidisciplinary marine research, and technology commercialization support. As a case study, we offer the Pacific Northwest as particularly suitable for a regional mCDR Technology Center of Excellence given existing and potential growth of all the characteristics of ideal sites listed above, and which could especially benefit from the region’s growing marine climate technology sector. Last, we offer a brief whole-of-government perspective for supporting and regulating these Centers of Excellence, including identification of mCDR Science Centers of Excellence to ensure that the development of mCDR technologies dovetails with much-needed advancements in oceanographic observation and simulation infrastructure.

Design and Development of a Fixtureless, Pass-through Machine Tool for Extrusion Machining

The aerospace, construction/architecture, and transportation manufacturing industries rely heavily on the mass production of near-net shape metallic and composite extrusions. While the production of raw extrusions is a relatively fast process, adding functional features such as holes and slots require additional time, cost, and energy to produce. To compensate for the inherent flexibility of extrusions, conventional machining requires rigid purpose-built fixtures for operations such as trimming, drilling and thinning. This approach requires that the machine tools be as large or larger than the parts themselves. This results in the need for excess shop floor space, energy for auxiliary equipment and motion systems, and significant capital expenditure. Considerable engineering expense and time involved in the designing, building, and proving out of part-specific fixtures for holding the components in specific configurations while machining add to the overall manufacturing cost. The primary objective of the technical collaboration between Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Fairmount Technologies (FT) is to improve the XM-3, a fixtureless CNC milling machine designed by FT. The machine was developed to trim, drill, and thin extrusions without part specific fixturing to make the manufacturing process more efficient and flexible. Dynamic measurements of the existing structure were collected, and modeling efforts were made to evaluate optimal machining parameters for the current system. Areas of improvement to increase the system stiffness, manufacturability, and machining efficiency were evaluated and highlighted for the next generation design. The impact of this effort may enable agile manufacturing across the commercial and defense aerospace industries, and other industries where extrusions are utilized like in the construction, architecture, and transportation industries.

Research to Address Technical Barriers to Expanded Markets for Biodiesel and Biodiesel Blends (CRADA Final Report)

NREL and the Clean Fuels Alliance America (CFAA) will work cooperatively to assess the effects of biodiesel blends on the performance of modern diesel engines. This work will include research to understand the impact of biodiesel blends on the operation and durability of particle filters and NO x control sorbents/catalysts, to quantify the effect on emission control systems performance, and to understand effects on engine component durability. This research was performed at NREL Renewable Fuels and Lubricants (REFUEL) laboratory (an engine testing laboratory) as well as at third party labs paid directly by CFAA with NREL as part of the project management team. Also, research to develop appropriate ASTM standards for biodiesel quality and stability was conducted in NREL’s bench scale fuel chemistry laboratory. The cooperative project involved laboratory testing and research at NREL using biodiesel from a variety of sources and in collaboration with a broad range of other stakeholders. In addition, NREL will work with NBB to set up an Industrial Steering Committee to design the scope for the various tasks and to provide technical oversight to these projects. NREL and NBB will cooperatively communicate the study results to as broad an audience as possible. This research benefits the public by expanding markets for a domestically produced low-carbon intensity fuel for use in diesel engines.

The TADA BESS Supply Chain Workshops are designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to address the evolving challenges at the intersection of battery energy storage systems (BESS), cybersecurity, and supply chain vulnerabilities. Primary System Thermal Fluids Analysis Model Development for the Compact High Temperature Gas Reactor (HC-HTGR) (Final Report)

Horizontal Compact High Temperature Gas Reactor (HC-HTGR) is being designed by a multi-disciplinary team of nuclear, mechanical, and structural engineers under the support of a DOE-NE Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program’s Advanced Reactor Concepts-20 (ARC-20) award. The objective of this ARC-20 project is to deliver a conceptual design for the proposed HC-HTGR and support its commercialization as a safe, low-cost HTGR. Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) is collaborating on the thermal hydraulic design and analysis of HC-HTGR reactor pressure vessel internals to ensure the reactor maintains sufficient safety margins during normal operation, shutdown, and accident conditions.

Quantifying and Optimizing the Energy Benefits of Mass Timber Construction

The International Mass Timber Alliance (IMTA) is a global organization of industry leaders, engineers, scientists, and associations dedicated to advancing mass timber construction. Its mission is to generate and disseminate scientific data supporting the development of standardized construction and energy efficient practices that promote the adoption of mass timber worldwide. IMTA collaborated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to leverage ORNL’s expertise in building envelope modeling and testing to evaluate how mass timber construction can reduce peak heating and cooling demand, lower overall energy use, and improve resilience during power outages. A previous study of 80 mass timber buildings in Finland found measured energy use up to 50% lower than predicted by simulation. This project aimed to validate and extend those findings for U.S. buildings through analytical modeling, laboratory testing, and full-scale building evaluations. The research focused on the thermal performance of low-embodied-energy wall assemblies, such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels and log walls, with particular attention to the effects of thermal inertia on indoor comfort and energy performance. While mass timber’s structural and fire-resistance properties are well documented, its whole-building thermal behavior has received limited attention. Field data, simulation results, and resilience testing from this study will inform future modeling practices, design guidelines, and construction practices by quantifying the unique thermal and demand-flexibility benefits of mass timber construction.

Hydrogen Education for a Decarbonized Global Economy (H 2 EDGE) (Final Technical Report)

The energy sector is undergoing rapid growth and transformation, creating urgent demand for a skilled workforce to support emerging technologies and resilient systems. Hydrogen is an emerging solution for “hard to abate” sectors, including heavy industry and transportation that also provides optionality for the electric system and enables long‑duration energy storage. As hydrogen scales from traditional industrial uses to new applications, success depends on knowledgeable engineers, technicians, planners, and operators safely deploying hydrogen technologies across the full value chain: production, delivery, storage, and end use. The H 2 EDGE initiative, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office from 2020 to 2025, was launched to prepare people for careers hydrogen and related technologies. Through its interactive approach, H 2 EDGE equipped stakeholders with knowledge and tools to build a reliable and sustainable energy future together. H 2 EDGE built a national network of academic and industry partners to deliver modular training, share open-access curricula, and engage diverse talent pipelines. The program leveraged EPRI’s extensive industry membership and expanded on the train-the-trainer model of the GridEd program to connect educators, employers, and community organizations across all regions of the U.S. New methods were introduced to more systematically map hydrogen competencies and assess curricula using traditional and AI-assisted approaches. Outcomes included delivery of professional short courses, developing university curriculum, sponsoring faculty and student projects, and engaging stakeholders through workshops, site tours, and webinars.

SAM: A Modern System Code for Advanced Non-LWR Safety Analysis

The System Analysis Module (SAM), developed at Argonne National Laboratory and by collaborators at other organizations, is for advanced non–light water reactor safety analysis. SAM aims to provide fast-running, modest-fidelity, whole-plant transient analysis capabilities that are essential for fast-turnaround design scoping and engineering analyses of advanced reactor concepts. To facilitate code development, SAM utilizes the MOOSE object-oriented application framework, its underlying finite element library, and linear and nonlinear solvers to leverage modern advanced software environments and numerical methods. SAM aims to solve tightly coupled physical phenomena, including fission reaction, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and thermal-mechanical responses in advanced reactor structures, systems, and components with high accuracy and efficiency. Finally, this paper gives an overview of the SAM code development, including goals and functional requirements, physical models, current capabilities, verification and validation, software quality assurance, and examples of simulations for advanced nuclear reactor applications.

Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Test Article: Second Year of Testing with Secondary Sodium System (Fiscal Year 2025 Final Report)

The Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Test Article (THETA) is currently installed in the Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop (METL) 28” test vessel #4. Both the primary and secondary sodium systems remain online to facilitate continued testing. This fiscal year, work was performed using a COMSOL Multiphysics magnetohydrodynamic model to characterize flow more accurately in the secondary electromagnetic flowmeters. Experimental campaigns were then performed to study the thermal hydraulic differences between sodium and water as a surrogate fluid in the THETA geometry as well as a study to better characterize and understand temperature oscillations that exist at the outlet of the core to the hot pool. A peer-reviewed article was published in the ASME Journal of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science detailing the THETA facility and providing an overview of a test that was performed with the primary and secondary system online [1]. Work continues to develop a database to house experimental THETA data to better facilitate collaboration with industry and laboratory partners for their use of the data for code benchmarking/validation. THETA remains fully operational and is positioned for continued testing in fiscal year 2026.
