Laboratory measurement of the complex dielectric constant of soils

The dielectric constant of a material is an extremely important parameter when considering passive radiometric remote sensing applications. This is because the emitted energy measured by a microwave radiometer is dependent on the dielectric constant of the surface being scanned. Two techniques of measuring dielectric constants are described. The first method involves a dielectric located in air. The second method uses basically the same theoretical approach, but the dielectric under consideration is located inside a section of waveguide.

An exact closed form solution for constant area compressible flow with friction and heat transfer

The well-known differential equation for the one-dimensional flow of a compressible fluid with heat transfer and wall friction has no known solution in closed form for the general case. This report presents a closed form solution for the special case of constant heat flux per unit length and constant specific heat. The solution was obtained by choosing the square of a dimensionless flow parameter as one of the independent variables to describe the flow. From this exact solution, an approximate simplified form is derived that is applicable for predicting subsonic flow performance characteristics for many types of constant area passages in internal flow. The data included in this report are considered sufficiently accurate for use as a guide in analyzing and designing internal gas flow systems.

Integral dose during constant velocity motion near a space power reactor

The dose rate in a rotationally-symmetric radiation field near a space power reactor is assumed to be inversely proportional to separation distance squared and directly proportional either to a constant or a constant times the sine-cubed of a polar angle. Constant velocity motion is examined in both cases in both two and three dimensional geometries. The two dimensional geometry occurs when the line of motion and the field axis of symmetry are co-planar. The dose integral in the sine-cubed region may be integrated directly, but a more useful form is obtained after a change of variable. A coordinate system rotation greatly simplifies the results. The three dimensional problem is integrated after a change of variable. Finally, tables of normalized functions are presented and discussed.

Constant directions of the Riccati equation

A constant direction of the Riccati equation associated with a class of singular discrete-time optimization problems is defined. The set of constant directions is completely characterized using a control viewpoint. Constant directions are used to reduce the computational complexity of the optimal system. Application to optimal filtering in colored noise is given.

Multi-input, multi-output regulator design for constant disturbances and non-zero set points with application to automatic landing in a crosswind

Undesirable steady offsets result when a stationary, linear regulator using state feedback is subjected to constant disturbances and/or non-zero setspoints. To eliminate these offsets, the disturbances and non-zero setpoints can be fed forward to the control. Only when the number of outputs is less than or equal to the number of control inputs can the outputs be maintained at arbitrary non-zero setpoints. The state and the disturbance may be estimated using a constant gain Kalman filter or by modeling the constant disturbances as exponentially correlated processes with long correlation times.

Development of procedures for calculating stiffness and damping properties of elastomers in engineering applications. Part 2: Elastomer characteristics at constant temperature

Dynamic properties of a commerical polybutadiene compound were determined at a constant temperature of 32 C by a forced-vibration resonant mass type of apparatus. The constant thermal state of the elastomer was ensured by keeping the ambient temperature constant and by limiting the power dissipation in the specimen. Experiments were performed with both compression and shear specimens at several preloads (nominal strain varying from 0 to 5 percent), and the results are reported in terms of a complex stiffness as a function of frequency. Very weak frequency dependence is observed and a simple power law type of correlation is shown to represent the data well. Variations in the complex stiffness as a function of preload are also found to be small for both compression and shear specimens.

Product distributions and rate constants for ion-molecule reactions in water, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane

The thermal energy, bimolecular ion-molecule reactions occurring in gaseous water, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane have been identified and their rate constants determined using ion cyclotron resonance methods. Absolute rate constants were determined for the disappearance of the primary ions by using the trapped ion method, and product distributions were determined for these reactions by using the cyclotron ejection method. Previous measurements are reviewed and compared with the results using the present methods. The relative rate constants for hydrogen-atom abstraction, proton transfer, and charge transfer are also determined for reactions of the parent ions.

Investigation of the Kramers-Kronig analysis - Revised optical constants of AgCl

White and Straley (1968) have reported room-temperature optical constants for AgCl that exhibit negative, unphysical dips at the band edge. Because Morrison (1961) also obtained such behavior for InAs, InSb, and GaAs, a study is made of the possible sources of this anomaly. An artifact of the experimental reflectance data near this energy is found to be responsible. No defect in the Kramers-Kronig transform or its use is implied, contrary to some suggestions. The corrected optical constants of AgCl were modified by about 10% up to 5 eV, whereas at higher energies they were barely affected. Thus Kramers-Kronig-deduced optical constants that exhibit unusual structure are not affected by this structure at other energies. The new AgCl results are presented, and assignments are briefly discussed.

Evaluation of atomic constants for optical radiation, volume 1

Atomic constants for optical radiation are discussed which include transition probabilities, line strengths, and oscillator strengths for both dipole and quadrupole transitions, as well as the associated matrix elements needed for line broadening calculations. Atomic constants were computed for a wide selection of elements and lines. An existing computer program was used, with modifications to include, in an approximate manner, the effect of equivalent electrons, and to enable reordering and restructuring of the output for publication. This program is suitable for fast, low cost computation of the optical constants, using the Coulomb approximation formalism for LS coupling.

Absolute radiometry and the solar constant

A series of active cavity radiometers (ACRs) are described which have been developed as standard detectors for the accurate measurement of irradiance in absolute units. It is noted that the ACR is an electrical substitution calorimeter, is designed for automatic remote operation in any environment, and can make irradiance measurements in the range from low-level IR fluxes up to 30 solar constants with small absolute uncertainty. The instrument operates in a differential mode by chopping the radiant flux to be measured at a slow rate, and irradiance is determined from two electrical power measurements together with the instrumental constant. Results are reported for measurements of the solar constant with two types of ACRs. The more accurate measurement yielded a value of 136.6 plus or minus 0.7 mW/sq cm (1.958 plus or minus 0.010 cal/sq cm per min).

An investigation of accelerating mode and decelerating mode constant-momentum mass spectrometry and their application to a residual gas analyzer

A theoretical analysis of constant momentum mass spectrometry was made. A maximum resolving power for the decelerating mode constant momentum mass spectrometer was shown theoretically to exist for a beam of ions of known energy. A vacuum system and an electron beam ionization source was constructed. Supporting electronics for a residual gas analyzer were built. Experimental investigations of various types of accelerating and decelerating impulsive modes of a constant momentum mass spectrometer as applied to a residual gas analyzer were made. The data indicate that the resolving power for the decelerating mode is comparable to that of the accelerating mode.

Equivalent constant-amplitude concept for crack growth under spectrum loading

To simplify crack-growth calculations, an equivalent constant-amplitude concept is developed based on the crack-closure phenomenon and on results of pilot tests that showed that the crack-opening load remained essentially constant while cracks grew under repeating random-load sequences containing several thousand load peaks. An equation of crack growth equivalence resulting from derivations based on the crack closure crack growth law is obtained and used to determine a relationship between an equivalent number of cycles of constant-amplitude loading and the distribution of the random loads, the exponent in the crack growth law, and the ratio of the crack-opening load to the maximum load. The validity of the concept is tested experimentally on six different random-load sequences. Good agreement is found between experimental results and theoretical predictions.

Thermocouple time constant measurement by cross power spectra

A method of measuring thermocouple time constants is outlined which requires Fourier signal processing. In this method, two thermocouples of differing time constants are placed in a gas flow as closely as possible to one another, and the time constant of the first thermocouple is determined directly from the extremum of the imaginary part of the ratio of the ensemble averaged cross-power spectrum to the ensemble averaged auto-power spectrum of that thermocouple. A coherence function is given for assuring the quality of the data, and results are presented for an experimental test of the method. Some problems with the method are briefly noted.

An improved model for the dielectric constant of sea water at microwave frequencies

The advent of precision microwave radiometry has placed a stringent requirement on the accuracy with which the dielectric constant of sea water must be known. To this end, measurements of the dielectric constant have been conducted at S-band and L-band with a quoted uncertainty of tenths of a percent. These and earlier results are critically examined, and expressions are developed which will yield computations of brightness temperature having an error of no more than 0.3 K for an undisturbed sea at frequencies lower than X-band. At the higher microwave and millimeter wave frequencies, the accuracy is in question because of uncertainties in the relaxation time and the dielectric constant at infinite frequency.

The effect of sunspots and faculae on the solar constant

We study the available measurements of the solar constant made at ground sites and from recent space observations to determine whether sunspots or faculae produce a detectable modulation of either the solar flux or the earth's atmospheric transmission. The data from radiometers on Mariners 6 and 7 rule out any relative change of the solar constant in space due directly to faculae or spots exceeding 0.03%. This limit is two orders of magnitude smaller than previous values obtained from ground measurements. The measurements made at mountain stations of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory between 1923 and 1952 show a marginally significant increase of solar constant at the level of 0.1%, related specifically to high projected facular area. Since this increase is not seen in the space measurements, we suggest that it may reflect a change in the earth's atmospheric transmission, possibly due to a change in ozone concentration induced by variation of facular ultraviolet radiation.

The rate constant for the reaction of oxygen /3P/ atoms with dichlorine monoxide

A fast flow discharge apparatus was used to measure the rate constant for the reaction of ground state oxygen atoms with dichlorine monoxide in the temperature range 236-295 K. The air afterflow technique (NO2 chemiluminescence) was used for detection of oxygen atoms. The Arrhenius expression for the rate constant was found to be 2.7 plus or minus 0.3 times 10 to the -11th power exp(-560 plus or minus 80/T) cu cm per molecule per sec. At 295 K the rate constant is 4.1 plus or minus 0.5 times 10 to the -12th power cu cm per molecule per sec.

Rate constant for the reaction of atomic chlorine with methane

The rate constant and temperature dependence of the Cl + CH4 reaction have been investigated by the techniques of competitive chlorination of CH4/C2H6 mixtures and by discharge-flow/mass spectroscopy. The objectives were to determine an accurate value for the rate constant for use in stratospheric modeling, and to clarify discrepancies in results previously obtained by different techniques. The results deduced from the competitive chlorination study are in good agreement with the absolute values measured by the mass spectrometric method, and at temperatures above 300 K are in good agreement with measurements by other techniques based on resonance fluorescence detection of atomic chlorine. However, in the 220-300 K region, the competitive experiments indicate lower rate constants than those obtained by resonance fluorescence methods, and do not reproduce the curved Arrhenius plots seen in some of those studies.

Rate constant for the fraction of atomic chlorine with formaldehyde from 200 to 500K

A flash photolysis - resonance fluorescence technique was used to measure rate constant. The results were independent of substantial variations in H2CO, total pressure (Ar), and flash intensity (i.e., initial Cl). The rate constant was shown to be invariant with temperature, the best representation for this temperature range being K = (7.48 + or - 0.50) x 10 to the minus 11 power cu cm molecule-1 s-1 where the error is one standard deviation. The rate constant is theoretically discussed and the potential importance of the reaction in stratospheric chemistry is considered.
