A Multiport DC Transformer to Enable Flexible Scalable DC as a Service

The rapid adoption of new DC loads and sources, including photovoltaic arrays, DC fast charging of electric vehicle, battery energy storage and data centers, requires a large amount of DC power conversion. A majority of new deployments also necessitate the integration of multiple DC loads and sources at one site. The traditional approach to serve these new applications relies on multiple standard power converters, each dedicated to a source or load, and results in highly customized systems, with challenging control coordination, complex protection strategies, and poor scalability. Instead, this paper proposes the concept of a multiport DC transformer (MDCT) as a modular building block for realizing a flexible, scalable DC as a Service system and address this rapidly growing need. The MDCT uses the S4T to achieve very tight control of cycle-by-cycle energy exchange between multiple ports, with high efficiency. A single multiport converter replaces 4-6 distinct converters, integrates all energy flows and manages protection. As a result, a new layered control architecture is introduced to ensure stability and scalability of the MDCT, with multiple S4T power converter building blocks connected in parallel to realize a fully modular system and reach the target power levels.

An intelligent energy router for managing behind-the-meter resources and assets

With increase in distributed energy resources (DERs) and smart loads, each energy resource and load need a separate power conversion system leading to complex coordination and interaction, reduced energy conversion efficiency, coordinating compliance to grid standards (IEEE 1547) from multiple sources, reduced security. Also, multiple vendors with legacy system designs and proprietary communications interfaces result in redundancy and increase in cost of power electronics systems. This paper presents an energy router concept for buildings applications which provides autonomous power flow between sources and loads with a novel agent-based software interface.

Evaporation Induced Entrainment of Contaminants from Evaporating and Burning Liquids.

This interim report details model development, theory, and a literature review focusing on the evaporation induced entrainment (sub-boiling) of contaminated liquids. Entrainment from a variety of sources is the topic of DOE Handbook 3010, and this report deals more broadly with fire related airborne sources of contaminants in hazardous operations. Relatively few studies have examined sub-boiling behavior in the past, however, it can be a phenomenon that presents a fire related risk under hazardous operations. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to infer the gaseous evolution of coordinated complexes, and a model for a water/plutonium/nitrate system is deduced from the simulation results by evaluating the statistical trends of the results. Questions remain as to the chemical reactivity and longevity of entrained species. A generalized computer model capability and simple analytical model assumptions are developed for predicting the results of these and other (boiling and solid entrainment) scenarios. Verification related predictions using these models are illustrated.

Metal-ligand catalysts for selective promotion of electrochemical CO 2 RR

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) provides opportunities to synthesize value-added products from this greenhouse gas in a sustainable manner. Efficient catalysts for this reaction are provided that selectively drive CO 2 reduction over the thermodynamic and kinetically competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in organic or aqueous electrolytes. The catalysts are metal-polypyridyl coordination complexes of a redox non-innocent terpyridine-based pentapyridine ligand and a first-row transition metal. The metal-ligand cooperativity in [Fe(tpyPY2Me)]2+ drives the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to CO at low overpotentials with high selectivity for CO 2 RR (>90%).

Long Excited-State Lifetimes in Three-Coordinate Copper(I) Complexes via Triplet–Triplet Energy Transfer to Pyrene-Decorated Isocyanides

There has been much effort to improve excited-state lifetimes in photosensitizers based on earth-abundant first-row transition metals. Copper(I) complexes have gained significant attention in this field, and in most cases, sterically driven approaches are used to optimize their lifetimes. This study presents a series of three-coordinate copper(I) complexes (Cu1–Cu3) where the excited-state lifetime is extended by triplet–triplet energy transfer. The heteroleptic compounds feature a cyclohexyl-substituted β-diketiminate (CyNacNac Me ) paired with aryl isocyanide ligands, giving the general formula Cu(CyNacNac Me )(CN-Ar) (CN-dmp = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide for Cu1; CN-pyr = 1-pyrenyl isocyanide for Cu2; CN-dmp-pyr = 2,6-dimethyl-4-(1-pyrenyl)phenyl isocyanide for Cu3). The nature, energies, and dynamics of the low-energy triplet excited states are assessed with a combination of photoluminescence measurements at room temperature and 77 K, ultrafast transient absorption (UFTA) spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The complexes with the pyrene-decorated isocyanides (Cu2 and Cu3) exhibit extended excited-state lifetimes resulting from triplet–triplet energy transfer (TTET) between the short-lived charge-transfer excited state ( 3 CT) and the long-lived pyrene-centered triplet state ( 3 pyr). This TTET process is irreversible in Cu3, producing exclusively the 3 pyr state, and in Cu2, the 3 CT and 3 pyr states are nearly isoenergetic, enabling reversible TTET and long-lived 3 CT luminescence. The improved photophysical properties in Cu2 and Cu3 result in improvements in activity for both photocatalytic stilbene E/Z isomerization via triplet energy transfer and photoredox transformations involving hydrodebromination and C–O bond activation. Furthermore, these results illustrate that the extended excited-state lifetimes achieved through TTET result in newly conceived photosynthetically relevant earth-abundant transition metal complexes.

Coordination Stoichiometry Effects on the Binding Hierarchy of Histamine and Imidazole–M 2+ Complexes

Histidine–M 2+ coordination bonds are a recognized bond motif in biogenic materials with high hardness and extensibility, which has led to growing interest in their use in soft materials for mechanical function. However, the effect of different metal ions on the stability of the coordination complex remains poorly understood, complicating their implementation in metal-coordinated polymer materials. Herein, rheology experiments and density functional theory calculations are used to characterize the stability of coordination complexes and establish the binding hierarchy of histamine and imidazole with Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ . It is found that the binding hierarchy is driven by the specific affinity of the metal ions to different coordination states, which can be macroscopically tuned by changing the metal-to-ligand stoichiometry of the metal-coordinated network. These findings facilitate the rational selection of metal ions for optimizing the mechanical properties of metal-coordinated materials.

Binding, Release and Functionalization of Intact Pnictogen Tetrahedra Coordinated to Dicopper Complexes

The bridging MeCN ligand in the dicopper(I) complexes [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -MeCN)][X] 2 (X=weakly coordinating anion, NTf 2 (1 a), FAl[OC 6 F 10 (C 6 F 5 )] 3 (1 b), Al[OC(CF 3 ) 3 ] 4 (1 c)) was replaced by white phosphorus (P 4 ) or yellow arsenic (As 4 ) to yield [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -E 4 )][X] 2 (E=P (2 a-c), As (3 a-c)). The molecular structures in the solid state reveal novel coordination modes for E 4 tetrahedra bonded to coinage metal ions. Experimental data and quantum chemical computations provide information concerning perturbations to the bonding in coordinated E 4 tetrahedra. Reactions with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) led to replacement of the E 4 tetrahedra with release of P 4 or As 4 and formation of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 - Me NHC)][X] 2 (4 a,b) or to an opening of one E-E bond leading to an unusual E 4 butterfly structural motif in [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 1 : η 1 -E 4 Dipp NHC)][X] 2 (E=P (5 a,b), E=As (6)). With a cyclic alkyl amino carbene ( Et CAAC), cleavage of two As-As bonds was observed to give two isomers of [(DPFN)Cu 2 (μ,η 2 : η 2 -As 4 Et CAAC)][X] 2 (7 a,b) with an unusual As 4 -triangle+1 unit.

Luminescent Bimetallic Two-Coordinate Gold(I) Complexes Utilizing Janus Carbenes

A series of bimetallic carbene-metal-amide (cMa) complexes have been prepared with bridging biscarbene ligands to serve as a model for the design of luminescent materials with large oscillator strengths and small energy differences between the singlet and triplet states (ΔE ST ). The complexes have a general structure (R 2 N)Au(:carbene—carbene:)Au(NR 2 ). The bimetallic complexes show solvation-dependent absorption and emission that is analyzed in detail. It is found that the molar absorptivity of the bimetallic complexes is correlated with the energy barrier to rotation of the metal–ligand bond. The bimetallic cMa complexes also exhibit short emission lifetimes (τ = 200–300 ns) with high photoluminescence efficiencies (Φ PL > 95%). The radiative rates of bimetallic cMa complexes are 3–4 times faster than that of the corresponding monometallic complexes. Analysis of temperature-dependent luminescence data indicates that the lifetime for the singlet state (τS 1 ) of bimetallic cMa complexes is near 12 ns with a ΔE ST of 40–50 meV. Here the presented compounds provide a general design for cMa complexes to achieve small values for ΔE ST while retaining high radiative rates. Solution-processed organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) made using two of the complexes as luminescent dopants show high efficiency and low roll-off at high luminance.

Short- to Intermediate-Range Structure, Transport, and Thermophysical Properties of LiF–NaF–ZrF4 Molten Salts

LiF–NaF–ZrF 4 multicomponent molten salts are identified as promising candidates for coolant salts in molten salt reactors and advanced high-temperature reactors. This study focused on low-melting point salt compositions of interest: 38LiF–51NaF–11ZrF 4 , 42LiF–29NaF–29ZrF 4 , and 26LiF–37NaF–37ZrF 4 . Ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations were performed and compared with available experimental data to assess the ability of rigid ion models (RIM) to reproduce short- to intermediate-range structure, transport, and thermophysical properties of the LiF–NaF–ZrF 4 salt mixtures. It is found that as ZrF 4 mol% increases, the average cation–anion coordination number (CN) of monovalent cations (Li + , Na + ) obtained from RIM calculations decreases, while multivalent Zr 4+ CN varied from 15% to 19% in comparison to corresponding AIMD values. In addition, RIM is found to predict the existence of 7, 8, and 9 coordinated fluorozirconate complexes, while AIMD and the available experimental data showed an occurrence of 6, 7, and 8 coordinated complexes in the melt. The intermediate-range structure analysis revealed that while the RIM parameters are able to reproduce a local structure for lower ZrF 4 mol% salts such as in 38LiF–51NaF–11ZrF 4 , an extensive fluorozirconate network formation is observed in RIM simulations for higher ZrF 4 mol% compositions. The network generated by RIM parameters is found to be mainly connected by “corner-sharing” fluorozirconate complexes as opposed to both “edge-sharing” and “corner-sharing” connectively portrayed by AIMD. It is found that a close agreement between AIMD and the RIM salt structure for the 11-mol% ZrF 4 salt resulted in good agreement in the calculated Zr diffusivities and the viscosity values. However, due to the inaccurate short- to intermediate-range structure prediction by RIM for higher ZrF 4 mol% compositions, thermophysical properties such as densities and heat capacity differ by up to 26% and 27%, respectively, upon comparison with AIMD and experimental values. Also, the network-dominated properties such as diffusion coefficients and viscosities differed by up to two and three orders of magnitude, respectively. This study signifies the importance of accurate salt structure generation for an accurate prediction of transport and thermophysical properties of multicomponent molten salts.

Cis-Divacant Octahedral Fe(II) in a Dimensionally Reduced Family of 2-(Pyridin-2-yl)pyrrolide Complexes

Four-coordinate transition metal complexes can adopt a diverse array of coordination geometries, with square planar and tetrahedral coordination being the most prevalent. Previously, we reported the synthesis of a trinuclear Fe(II) complex, Fe 3 TPM 2 , supported by a three-fold symmetric 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligand (i.e., tris(5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methane), that featured a rare cis-divacant octahedral (CDO) geometry at each Fe(II) center. Here, a series of truncated 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligands is described that support mono- and binuclear Fe(II) complexes that also exhibit CDO geometries. Metallation of tetradentate ligand bis(5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methane (H 2 BPM) in THF results in a binuclear complex Fe 2 (BPM) 2 (THF) 2 in which both Fe(II) ions are octahedrally coordinated. The coordinated THF solvent ligands are labile: THF dissociation leads to Fe 2 (BPM) 2 , which features five-coordinate Fe(II) ions. The Fe–Fe distance in these binuclear complexes can be elongated by ligand methylation. Metalation of bis(5-(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)methane (H 2 BPM Me ) in THF leads to the formation of four-coordinate, CDO Fe(II) centers in Fe(BPM Me ) 2 . Further ligand truncation affords bidentate ligands 2-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (PyrPyrrH) and 2-methyl-6-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (Pyr Me PyrrH). Metalation of these ligands in THF affords six-coordinate complexes Fe(PyrPyrr) 2 (THF) 2 and Fe(Pyr Me Pyrr) 2 (THF) 2 . Dissociation of labile solvent ligands provides access to fourcoordinate Fe(II) complexes. Ligand disproportionation at Fe(PyrPyrr) 2 results in the formation of Fe(PyrPyrr) 3 and Fe(0). Ligand methylation suppresses this disproportionation and enables isolation of Fe(Pyr Me Pyrr) 2 , which is rigorously CDO. Complete ligand truncation, by separating the 2-pyridylpyrrolide ligands into the constituent monodentate pyridyl and pyrrolide donors, affords Fe(Pyr) 2 (Pyrr) 2 in which the Fe(II) is tetrahedrally coordinated. Computational analysis indicates that the potential energy surface that dictates the coordination geometry in this family of four-coordinate complexes is fairly flat in the vicinity of CDO coordination. Furthermore, these synthetic studies provide the structural basis to explore the implications of CDO geometry on Fe-catalyzed reactions.

Ab-Initio molecular dynamics simulations of binary NaCl-ThCl 4 and ternary NaCl-ThCl 4 -UCl 3 molten salts

Molten salt reactor (MSR) with Thorium (Th) fuel cycle has attracted growing attention due to its merits such as safety, low radioactive waste production, and non-proliferation. The design and safe operation of MSR rely on a thorough understanding of the thermophysical properties of molten salts over a wide range of composition and temperature. However, experimental data of Th-based molten salts are limited due to the inherent challenges of dealing with corrosive molten salts and the radioactive nature of actinides. Here, in this work, thermophysical properties including density, heat capacity, thermal expansion coefficient, and mixing energy of binary NaCl-ThCl 4 and ternary NaCl-ThCl 4 -UCl 3 molten salts are explored using ab-initio molecular dynamic simulations (AIMD) with the dDsC dispersion correction. The calculated mixing energy of binary NaCl-ThCl 4 exhibits a minimum close to the eutectic composition. The heat capacity of the mixtures is linearly dependent on the mole fraction of each component. 7-fold and 6-fold coordinated Th complexes are dominant in the mixtures. 8-fold coordinated Th complex increases with ThCl 4 fraction due to the formation of network structures. The average coordination number of Th exhibits a minimum near the eutectic composition. The minimum mixing energy for the ternary mixtures is observed in systems with a composition close to [NaCl] 0.5 [ThCl 4 ] 0.25 [UCl 3 ] 0.25 . The density positively deviates from the ideal solution in mixtures near this composition. These results are important to fill the data and knowledge gap of ThCl 4 molten salts.

Electrocatalytic Ammonia Oxidation with Coordinatively Saturated Ruthenium Catalyst

This communication describes the investigation of a coordinatively saturated complex [Ru(tpy)(dmabpy)Cl] + ([Ru(Cl)] + ) as an ammonia oxidation catalyst. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show an ideal S-shaped wave, indicating total catalysis conditions with a k obs (TOF max ) of 9360 h −1 . The reaction was found to be first-order in [Ru(Cl)] + and third-order in [NH 3 ]. Stoichiometric reactions of the one-electron oxidized species, [Ru(Cl)] 2+ , were monitored following the addition of 15 NH 3 using 1 H and 15 N NMR spectroscopy. These experiments showed that the chloride-coordinated complex rapidly converts NH 3 to N 2 . NMR spectroscopy and electrochemistry results definitively show that NH 3 does not substitute the Cl − ligand to form the previously reported [Ru(NH 3 )] 2+ catalyst which operates by a different mechanistic pathway. Taken together these results indicate outersphere electron transfer mediated ammonia oxidation reaction.

Switchable client specificity in a dual functional chaperone coordinates light-harvesting complex biogenesis

The proper assembly of light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) is critical for photosynthesis and requires the biogenesis of light-harvesting chlorophylla,b-binding proteins (LHCPs) to be coordinated with chlorophyll (Chl) biosynthesis. The mechanism underlying this coordination is not well understood. Here, we show that a conserved molecular chaperone, chloroplast signal recognition particle 43-kDa protein (cpSRP43), provides a molecular thermostat that helps maintain this coordination. cpSRP43 undergoes a conformational rearrangement between a well-folded closed state and a partially disordered open state. Closed cpSRP43 is dedicated to the biogenesis of LHCPs, whereas open cpSRP43 protects multiple Chl biosynthesis enzymes from heat-induced destabilization. Rising temperature shifts cpSRP43 to the open state, enabling it to protect heat-destabilized Chl biosynthesis enzymes. Our results reveal the molecular basis of a posttranslational mechanism for the thermoadaptation of LHC biogenesis. They also demonstrate how an adenosine triphosphate–independent chaperone uses conformational dynamics to switch its activity and client selectivity, thereby adapting to different proteostatic demands under shifting environmental conditions.
