The cost analyst must understand the operations of the airline and how the activities of the airline are measured, as well as how the costs are incurred and recorded. The data source is usually a cost accounting process. This provides data on the cumulated expenses in various categories over a time period like a quarter, or year, and must be correlated by the analyst with cumulated measures of airline activity which seem to be causing this expense.
Observational data on sunspots, the 2800-MHz flux, and calcium plages are interpreted which were obtained during the declining phase of solar cycle 20. It is shown that three pulses of activity occurred during this period and resulted in two conspicuous 'stillstands' in the smooth means of the sunspot, 2800-MHz, and plage data. The longitudes of centers of sunspot and flare activity are found to have clustered in identifiable zones or hemispheres for relatively long periods of time. The sun is seen to have had a relatively inactive hemisphere centered about zero deg longitude, and certain well defined coronal holes were apparently located near the middle of this hemisphere. The first sunspot groups of cycle 21 are observed to have formed in the longitude zones associated with relatively high levels of activity during cycle 20.
Substitution of observed monthly mean sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) as lower boundary conditions, in place of climatological SSTs, failed to improve the model simulations. While the impact of SST anomalies on the model output is greater at sea level than at upper levels the impact on the monthly mean simulations is not beneficial at any level. Shifts of one and two days in initialization time produced small, but non-trivial, changes in the model-generated monthly mean synoptic fields. No improvements in the mean simulations resulted from the use of either time-averaged initial data or re-initialization with time-averaged early model output. The noise level of the model, as determined from a multiple initial state perturbation experiment, was found to be generally low, but with a noisier response to initial state errors in high latitudes than the tropics.
With the use of a thermocouple and mirror galvanometer, calibrated before the experiment and after each test, it was found that the normal temperature in the esophagus is 0.1-0.4 C higher than in the oral cavity, the temperature in the duodenum is somewhat less than in the stomach, but higher with cholecystitis, duodenitis or gastritis, the temperature in the normal stomach equals or is somewhat higher than in the esophagus, and that the temperature of distended stomachs frequently is lower than in the esophagus. It was found that hot water is retained in the stomach longer than cold water, and that both hot and cold water are allowed to pass into the duodenum when the water temperature becomes approximately equal to that of the surrounding organs.
Color changes at the Viking landing sites over the past Mars year are examined. Both sites exhibited an increased red to blue ratio of the soil due to the accumulation of a thin layer of bright red dust from the two global dust storms. The generation of bright areas on Mars and the formation of dark areas by stripping of bright dust layers are explained by the lander observations before the dust storm activity which show isolated bright red drifts which may be regions where material deposited during previous storms was protected from wind erosion.
The cultural and historical influences that students from foreign countries bring with them to technical and report writing classes, in particular those influences that would affect their receipt of instruction in American principles for written prose are examined. The grouping of sentences into idea units and into paragraphs, and the grouping of the paragraphs into whole structures are considered. The different cultures, different habits and norms for handling prose, and the dictates for style and structure and sufficiency and approach are also considered.
Solar array welding technology is examined from its beginnings in the late 1960's to the present. The U.S. and European efforts are compared, and significant similarities are highlighted. The utilization of welding technology for space use is shown to have been influenced by a number of subtle, secondary factors.
The elementary radical-radical reactions that are of such importance in laser, astrophysical, atmospheric, and combustion processes are increasingly open to direct rate measurement. Attention is presently given to the O + HO2 reaction, which has only one exothermic product channel: OH + O2. Isotopic product analysis was conducted spectroscopically using laser-induced fluorescence of OH. It is found that the simple atom-radical reaction takes place by way of the rapid formation and breakup of an unexpected radical intermediate, thereby raising questions as to the formation, thermochemistry, and decomposition of poorly known products in many other radical-radical reaction systems.
The Johnson Space Center has established five major goals to meet the Nation's expectation of maintaining U.S. preeminence in space. The first three are technical in nature. They define the basic mission-the reason for being. The two goals relating to the Space Shuttle and Space Station are obviously the most demanding in their immediate claim for major resources. The third goal is equally important in that the technical competence must be maintained and enhanced. The remaining two goals address the two critical success factors required for achieving the first three. One goal pertains to maintaining and enhancing the highly skilled work force. The other goal concerns the important relations with other key members of the U.S. space team. Each goal is listed along with a proposed strategy or approach for implementing each goal. Subsequently, each goal is accompanied by a brief explanation and a set of objectives. These objectives provide the specific targets of opportunity for focusing the immediate efforts.
The part of energy of the planetary waves which enters the stratosphere depends on conditions of planetary wave generation and propagation through the tropopause, and the part of planetary wave energy which enters the mesosphere depends on conditions of planetary wave propagation through the stratopause. An attempt is made to estimate connections between extratropical middle atmosphere temperature long term variations and portions of energy of planetary waves which enter the mesosphere and stratosphere during winter seasons in Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Interannual variations of temperatures at the 30 km and 70 km levels are investigated for the central winter months of the period 1970 to 1986. This period includes the descending branch of the 20th solar cycle and the whole 21st cycle. Calculations are made on the basis of measurements at Heiss Island and Molodezhnaya.

General principles of systems engineering are applied to the design of materials to meet specific performance objectives. Results of ongoing reseach on processing/structure and structure/property relations in ultrahigh-strength steels are used to illustrate the formulation of quantitative microstructural objectives to achieve required property combinations, and the computer thermodynamics-based design of compositions responding to prescribed processing conditions. A class project addresses the conceptual design of a 7-component stainless bearing steel for a critical Space Shuttle application.
Experimental tests of the Tergra-2 model are based on data collected under moderately wet to wet and very dry soil moisture conditions. Further testing of the model under intermediate soil moisture conditions is required and additional testing under very dry conditions may lead to modifications that make the model more suitable to water-stressed conditions. Combining the Tergra model with a soil evaporation routine should enhance the accuracy of the model and allow it to be employed in situations where vapor fluxes are not almost solely attributable to transpiration.
