Compositions and methods for the modification of imine covalent organic frameworks (COFs)

The present invention provides for a method for modifying a covalent organic framework (COF), the method comprising: contacting a COF comprising an imine group with a phenylacetylene in, or to form, a mixture, in a suitable reaction condition for converting the imine group into a quinoline group, and COF comprising a quinoline group. The present invention also provides for a superhydrophobic surface comprising a solid surface coated with or comprising the covalent organic framework (COF).

Covalent reinforcement of carbon nanotube assemblies

Disclosed here is a method of fabricating a covalently reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT) assembly. The method includes producing a CNT assembly by pulling entangled CNTs from a CNT array fabricated on a substrate, the CNT assembly including a plurality of CNTs that are aligned; and creating covalent bonding between the CNTs of the CNT assembly by applying a high energy ion irradiation to the CNT assembly.

Highly Flexible Dielectric Films from Solution Processable Covalent Organic Frameworks**

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are known to be a promising class of materials for a wide range of applications, yet their poor solution processability limits their utility in many areas. Here we report a pore engineering method using hydrophilic side chains to improve the processability of hydrazone and β-ketoenamine-linked COFs and the production of flexible, crystalline films. Further, mechanical measurements of the free-standing COF films of COF-PEO-3 (hydrazone-linked) and TFP-PEO-3 (β-ketoenamine-linked), revealed a Young's modulus of 391.7 MPa and 1034.7 MPa, respectively. The solubility and excellent mechanical properties enabled the use of these COFs in dielectric devices. Specifically, the TFP-PEO-3 film-based dielectric capacitors display simultaneously high dielectric constant and breakdown strength, resulting in a discharged energy density of 11.22 J cm -3 . This work offers a general approach for producing solution processable COFs and mechanically flexible COF-based films, which hold great potential for use in energy storage and flexible electronics applications.

Fe-N 4 O-C Nanoplates Covalently Bonding on Graphene for Efficient CO 2 Electroreduction and Zn-CO 2 Batteries

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction into value-added products holds great promise in moving toward carbon neutrality but remains a grand challenge due to lack of efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, the nucleophilic substitution reaction is elaborately harnessed to synthesize carbon nanoplates with a Fe-N 4 O configuration anchored onto graphene substrate (Fe-N 4 O-C/Gr) through covalent linkages. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the unique configuration of Fe-N 4 O with one oxygen (O) atom in the axial direction not only suppresses the competing hydrogen evolution reaction, but also facilitates the desorption of *CO intermediate compared with the commonly planar single-atomic Fe sites. The Fe-N 4 O-C/Gr shows excellent performance in the electroreduction of CO 2 into carbon monoxide (CO) with an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 98.3% at -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high turnover frequency of 3511 h -1 . Furthermore, as a cathode catalyst in an aqueous zinc (Zn)-CO 2 battery, the Fe-N 4 O-C/Gr achieves a high CO Faradaic efficiency (≈91%) at a discharge current density of 3 mA cm -2 and long-term stability over 74 h. Here this work opens up a new route to simultaneously modulate the geometric and electronic structure of single-atomic catalysts toward efficient CO 2 conversion.

Covalent Graphene-MOF Hybrids for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

In this work, the covalent attachment of an amine functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH 2 = Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (bdc-NH 2 ) 6 ; bdc-NH 2 = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) (UiO-Universitetet i Oslo) to the basal-plane of carboxylate functionalized graphene (graphene acid = GA) via amide bonds is reported. The resultant GA@UiO-66-NH 2 hybrid displayed a large specific surface area, hierarchical pores and an interconnected conductive network. The electrochemical characterizations demonstrated that the hybrid GA@UiO-66-NH 2 acts as an effective charge storing material with a capacitance of up to 651 F g –1 , significantly higher than traditional graphene-based materials. The results suggest that the amide linkage plays a key role in the formation of a π-conjugated structure, which facilitates charge transfer and consequently offers good capacitance and cycling stability. Furthermore, to realize the practical feasibility, an asymmetric supercapacitor using a GA@UiO-66-NH 2 positive electrode with Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene as the opposing electrode has been constructed. The cell is able to deliver a power density of up to 16 kW kg –1 and an energy density of up to 73 Wh kg –1 , which are comparable to several commercial devices such as Pb-acid and Ni/MH batteries. Under an intermediate level of loading, the device retained 88% of its initial capacitance after 10 000 cycles.

Atomically Thin, Ionic–Covalent Organic Nanosheets for Stable, High–Performance Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

The incorporation of charged functional groups is effective to modulate the activity of molecular complexes for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), yet long-term heterogeneous electrolysis is often hampered by catalyst leaching. Herein, an electrocatalyst of atomically thin, cobalt-porphyrin-based, ionic–covalent organic nanosheets (CoTAP-iCONs) is synthesized via a post-synthetic modification strategy for high-performance CO 2 -to-CO conversion. The cationic quaternary ammonium groups not only enable the formation of monolayer nanosheets due to steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion, but also facilitate the formation of a *COOH intermediate, as suggested by theoretical calculations. Consequently, CoTAP-iCONs exhibit higher CO 2 RR activity than other cobalt-porphyrin-based structures: an 870% and 480% improvement of CO current densities compared to the monomer and neutral nanosheets, respectively. Additionally, the iCONs structure can accommodate the cationic moieties. In a flow cell, CoTAP-iCONs attain a very small onset overpotential of 40 mV and a stable total current density of 212 mA cm –2 with CO Faradaic efficiency of >95% at –0.6 V for 11 h. Further coupling the flow electrolyzer with commercial solar cells yields a solar-to-CO conversion efficiency of 13.89%. Finally, this work indicates that atom-thin, ionic nanosheets represent a promising structure for achieving both tailored activity and high stability.

Aerosol‐Jet‐Printable Covalent Organic Framework Colloidal Inks and Temperature‐Sensitive Nanocomposite Films

Abstract With molecularly well‐defined and tailorable 2D structures, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as leading material candidates for chemical sensing, storage, separation, and catalysis. In these contexts, the ability to directly and deterministically print COFs into arbitrary geometries will enable rapid optimization and deployment. However, previous attempts to print COFs have been restricted by low spatial resolution and/or post‐deposition polymerization that limits the range of compatible COFs. Here, these limitations are overcome with a pre‐synthesized, solution‐processable colloidal ink that enables aerosol jet printing of COFs with micron‐scale resolution. The ink formulation utilizes the low‐volatility solvent benzonitrile, which is critical to obtaining homogeneous printed COF film morphologies. This ink formulation is also compatible with other colloidal nanomaterials, thus facilitating the integration of COFs into printable nanocomposite films. As a proof‐of‐concept, boronate‐ester COFs are integrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form printable COF‐CNT nanocomposite films, in which the CNTs enhance charge transport and temperature sensing performance, ultimately resulting in high‐sensitivity temperature sensors that show electrical conductivity variation by 4 orders of magnitude between room temperature and 300 °C. Overall, this work establishes a flexible platform for COF additive manufacturing that will accelerate the incorporation of COFs into technologically significant applications.

Vapor–Phase Synthesis of Electrocatalytic Covalent Organic Frameworks

The inability to process many covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as thin films plagues their widespread utilization. Herein, a vapor-phase pathway for the bottom-up synthesis of a class of porphyrin-based COFs is presented. This approach allows integrating electrocatalysts made of metal-ion-containing COFs into the electrodes’ architectures in a single-step synthesis and deposition. By precisely controlling the metal sites at the atomic level, remarkable electrocatalytic performance is achieved, resulting in unprecedentedly high mass activity values. How the choice of metal atoms, i.e., cobalt and copper, can determine the catalytic activities of POR-COFs is demonstrated. The theoretical data proves that the Cu site is highly active for nitrate conversion to ammonia on the synthesized COFs.

High‐Temperature Single‐Photon Emission From Covalently Functionalized van der Waals Heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as tungsten diselenide (WSe 2 ) are attractive nanomaterials for quantum information applications due to single-photon emission (SPE) from intrinsic atomic defects. Defect and strain engineering techniques have been developed to produce high purity, deterministically placed SPE in WSe 2 . However, a major challenge in the application of these techniques is the low temperature required to observe defect-bound TMD exciton emission, typically limiting SPE to T < 30 K. SPE at higher temperatures either loses purity or requires integration into complex devices such as optical cavities. Here, 2D heterostructure engineering and molecular functionalization are combined to achieve high purity (>90%) SPE in strained WSe 2 persisting to over T = 90 K. Covalent diazonium functionalization of graphite in layered WSe 2 /graphite heterostructures maintains high purity up to T = 90 K and single-photon source integrity up to T = 115 K. This method preserves the best qualities of SPE from WSe 2 while increasing working temperature to more than three times the typical range. This work demonstrates the versatility of surface functionalization and heterostructure design to synergistically improve the properties of quantum emission and offers new insights into the phenomenon of SPE from 2D materials.

Defying Thermodynamics: Stabilization of Alane Within Covalent Triazine Frameworks for Reversible Hydrogen Storage

The highly unfavorable thermodynamics of direct aluminum hydrogenation can be overcome by stabilizing alane within a nanoporous bipyridine-functionalized covalent triazine framework (AlH 3 @CTF-bipyridine). This material and the counterpart AlH 3 @CTF-biphenyl rapidly desorb H 2 between 95 and 154°C, with desorption complete at 250°C. Sieverts measurements, 27 Al MAS NMR and 27 Al{ 1 H} REDOR experiments, and computational spectroscopy reveal that AlH 3 @CTF-bipyridine dehydrogenation is reversible at 60°C under 700 bar hydrogen, >10 times lower pressure than that required to hydrogenate bulk aluminum. DFT calculations and EPR measurements support an unconventional mechanism whereby strong AlH 3 binding to bipyridine results in single-electron transfer to form AlH 2 (AlH 3 ) n clusters. Here the resulting size-dependent charge redistribution alters the dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation thermochemistry, suggesting a novel strategy to enable reversibility in high-capacity metal hydrides.

Highly Perfluorinated Covalent Triazine Frameworks Derived from a Low-Temperature Ionothermal Approach Towards Enhanced CO 2 Electroreduction

Perfluorinated covalent triazine frameworks (F-CTFs) have shown unique features and attractive performance in separation and catalysis. However, state-of-art F-CTFs synthesized via the ZnCl 2 -promoted procedure have quite low fluorine contents due to C-F bond cleavage induced by chloride (a Lewis base) and the harsh conditions deployed (400-700 °C). Fabricating F-CTFs with high fluorine contents (> 30 wt%) remains challenging. Herein, we present a low-temperature ionothermal approach (275 °C) to prepare F-CTFs, which is achieved via polymerization of tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFPN) over the Lewis superacids, e.g., zinc triflimide [Zn(NTf 2 ) 2 ] without side reactions. With low catalyst loading (equimolar), F-CTFs are afforded with high fluorine content (31 wt%), surface area up to 367 m 2 g -1 , and micropores around 1.1 nm. The highly hydrophobic F-CTF-1 exhibits good capability to boost electroreduction of CO 2 to CO, with faradaic efficiency of 95.7% at –0.8 V and high current density (–141 mA cm -2 ) surpassing most of the metal-free electrocatalysts.

Covalent Organic Framework (COF) Derived Ni–N–C Catalysts for Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction: Unraveling Fundamental Kinetic and Structural Parameters of the Active Sites

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction is a potential approach to convert CO 2 into valuable chemicals using electricity as feedstock. Abundant and affordable catalyst materials are needed to upscale this process in a sustainable manner. Nickel-nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni-N-C) is an efficient catalyst for CO 2 reduction to CO, and the single-site Ni-N x motif is believed to be the active site. However, critical metrics for its catalytic activity, such as active site density and intrinsic turnover frequency, so far lack systematic discussion. In this work, we prepared a set of covalent organic framework (COF)-derived Ni-N-C catalysts, for which the Ni-N x content could be adjusted by the pyrolysis temperature. The combination of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure evidenced the presence of Ni single-sites, and quantitative X-ray photoemission addressed the relation between active site density and turnover frequency.

Covalent Organic Framework as an Efficient Protection Layer for a Stable Lithium-Metal Anode

We report Lithium (Li) metal shows great potential for achieving high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. However, the practical applications of Li-metal batteries are still challenged by the formation of Li dendrites and unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on metallic Li. Herein, a thin covalent organic framework layer is in situ fabricated on Li (COF-Li) to suppress Li dendrite growth and mitigate the side reaction on the Li anode. The COF has a periodic and uniform porosity, allowing for selectively sieving Li ions and guiding a uniform Li deposition. As a result, the COF-Li exhibits a non-dendrite morphology during repeated Li plating/stripping and demonstrates a remarkable cycle life over 13 200 h with an extremely low overpotential of only 16 mV at a high current density of 10 mA cm -2 and a high areal capacity of 10 mAh cm -2 .

Anomalous Redox Features Induced by Strong Covalency in Layered NaTi 1-y V y S 2 Cathodes for Na-Ion Batteries

The rising demand for energy density of cathodes means the need to raise the voltage or capacity of cathodes. Transition metal (TM) doping has been employed to enhance the electrochemical properties in multiple aspects. The redox voltage of doped cathodes usually falls in between the voltage of undoped layered cathodes. However, in this study, we found anomalous redox features in NaTi 1-y V y S 2 . The first discharge platform potential (2.4 V) is significantly higher than that of undoped NaTiS 2 and NaVS 2 (both around 2.2 V), and the energy density is raised by 15%. We speculate that the anomalous voltage is mainly attributed to the strong hybridization in the Ti-V-S system. Ti 3+ and V 3+ undergo charge transfer and form a more stable Ti (t 2g 0 e g 0 ) and V (t 2g 3 e g 0 ) electronic configuration. Our results indicate that higher voltage of cathode materials could be achieved by strong TM-ligand covalency, and this conclusion provides possible opportunities to explore high voltage materials for future layered cathodes.

Self-Assembly of Helical Nanofibrous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Despite significant progress on the design and synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise control over microstructures of such materials remains challenging. Herein, two chiral COFs with well-defined one-handed double-helical nanofibrous morphologies were constructed via an unprecedented template-free method, capitalizing on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Detailed time-dependent experiments reveal the spontaneous transformation of initial rod-like aggregates into the double-helical microstructures. Impoirtantly, we have further demonstrated that the helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be facilely inversed by simply adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Moreover, by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents, the helical COF nanostructures can effectively induce circularly polarized luminescence with the highest luminescent asymmetric factor (g lum ) up to ≈0.01.

A Porous Crystalline Nitrone-Linked Covalent Organic Framework

Herein, we report the synthesis of a nitrone-linked covalent organic framework, COF-115, by combining N, N', N', N'''-(ethene-1, 1, 2, 2-tetrayltetrakis(benzene-4, 1-diyl))tetrakis(hydroxylamine) and terephthaladehyde via a polycondensation reaction. In this study, the formation of the nitrone functionality was confirmed by solid-state 13 C multi cross-polarization magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy of the 13 C-isotope-labeled COF-115 and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The permanent porosity of COF-115 was evaluated through low-pressure N 2 , CO 2 , and H 2 sorption experiments. Water vapor and carbon dioxide sorption analysis of COF-115 and the isoreticular imine-linked COF indicated a superior potential of N-oxide-based porous materials for atmospheric water harvesting and CO 2 capture applications. Density functional theory calculations provided valuable insights into the difference between the adsorption properties of these COFs. Lastly, photoinduced rearrangement of COF-115 to the associated amide-linked material was successfully demonstrated.
