Measurement of $\nu_\mu/\bar\nu_\mu$ CC double-differential cross sections on MINERvA hydrocarbon target for the shallow inelastic scattering background region

Cross section measurements are essential for all neutrino oscillation experiments. In fact, uncertaintiesassociated to cross section model parameters constitute one of the dominant sources oferrors in current oscillation analyses. In particular, understanding neutrino-induced pion productionin the kinematic regime known as shallow inelastic scattering (SIS) is critical for improvingneutrino interaction modeling in event generators. In this study, 416,233 (237,468) muon neutrino(antineutrino) interactions are measured in a SIS background region, predominantly made ofbaryon resonances. The analyzed datasets were collected from 2013 to 2019, comprising neutrinosgenerated by the Fermilab NuMI facility, with mean energy of 6 GeV, and the interactions occurredon the MINERvA hydrocarbon target. The measurements are presented as double-differential crosssections in terms of the outgoing muon longitudinal and transverse momentum components, aswell as the Bjorken x and y variables. Comparisons between the extracted data and predictionsfrom several generators reveal significant discrepancies across most kinematic bins.

Cross-sections for 43 Sc, 44 m Sc, and 44 g Sc from two heavy ion reactions

Two different heavy ion reactions were used to produce 43 Sc (t$_{\frac12}$ = 3.891 h), 44g Sc (t$_{\frac12}$ = 4.042 h), and 44m Sc (t$_{\frac12}$ = 58.61 h) among other stable or long-lived chemically separable products. Production cross sections for 19 F + 27 Al and the reverse kinematic reaction 35 Cl + nat B were measured using an MC-SNICS ion source and the Notre Dame FN Tandem Accelerator. 19 F beams from 35 to 60 MeV were produced with beam currents between 40–80 pnA and 35 Cl beams were produced at six entrance energies with comparable beam currents. This work reports nuclear reaction cross sections 27 Al ( 19 F, x) 43 Sc, 27 Al ( 19 F, pn) 44g Sc, and 27 Al ( 19 F, pn) 44m Sc at six energies between 35 and 60 MeV lab energy. Cross sections within the same energy range were measured for 27 Al ( 19 F, 3pn) 42 K and 27 Al ( 19 F, 3p) 43 K. Comparative measurements were performed for the same compound nucleus produced from nat B( 35 Cl, x) 43 Sc, nat B( 35 Cl, pn) 44g Sc, and nat B( 35 Cl, pn) 44m Sc. The measured thin target cross sections show an overestimation by several statistical models for the scandium radioisotopes. This is corroborated by the measured thick target production rates for both entrance channels. This may be due to angular momentum effects of a heavy ion entrance channel compared to light-ion production, but additional work is required to understand this discrepancy. Finally, these measurements demonstrate that the medically useful 43 Sc, 44g Sc, and 44m Sc radioisotopes can be free of the long-lived contaminant 46 Sc without the use of enriched targets, using heavy ion beams and robust target materials.

Measurement of the double-differential cross section of muon-neutrino charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy in the NOvA Near Detector

The NOvA collaboration reports cross-section measurements for $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy (maximum kinetic energy of 250 MeV for protons and 175 MeV for pions) in the NOvA Near Detector. The results are presented as a double-differential cross section as a function of the direct observables of the final-state muon kinematics. Results are also presented as a single-differential cross section as a function of the derived square of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^{2}$, and as a function of the derived neutrino energy. The data correspond to an accumulated 8.09$\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) in the neutrino mode of the NuMI beam, with a narrow band of neutrino energies peaked at 1.8 GeV. The analysis provides a sample of neutrino-nucleus interactions with an enhanced fraction of quasi-elastic and two-particle-two-hole (2p2h) interactions. This enhancement allows quantitative comparisons with various nuclear models. We find strong disagreement between data and theory-based models in various regions of the muon kinematic phase space, especially in the forward muon direction.

Baryon–antibaryon photoproduction cross sections off the proton

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has observed 𝑝⁢$\overline{p}$ and, for the first time, Λ$\overlineΛ$ and 𝑝$\overlineΛ$ photoproduction from a proton target at photon energies up to 11.6 GeV. The angular distributions are forward peaked for all produced pairs, consistent with Regge-like 𝑡-channel exchange. Asymmetric wide-angle antibaryon distributions show the presence of additional processes. In a phenomenological model, we find consistency with a double-𝑡-channel exchange process where antibaryons are created only at the middle vertex. The model matches all observed distributions with a small number of free parameters. In the hyperon channels, we observe a clear distinction between photoproduction of the Λ$\overlineΛ$ and 𝑝$\overlineΛ$ systems but general similarity to the 𝑝$\overline{p}$ system. We report both total cross sections and cross sections differential with respect to momentum transfer and the invariant masses of the created particle pairs. No narrow resonant structures were found in these reaction channels. The suppression of 𝑠$\overline{s}$ quark pairs relative to 𝑑$\overline{d}$ quark pairs is similar to what has been seen in other reactions.

Measurement of ZZ production cross-sections in the four-lepton final state in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

This paper reports cross-section measurements of ZZ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The data were collected by the ATLAS detector in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 29 fb -1 . Events in the ZZ → 4ℓ(ℓ = e, μ) final states are selected and used to measure the inclusive and differential cross-sections in a fiducial region defined close to the analysis selections. The inclusive cross-section is further extrapolated to the total phase space with a requirement of 66 < m Z < 116 GeV for both Z bosons, yielding 16.8 ± 1.1 pb. The results are well described by the Standard Model predictions.

In-medium changes of nucleon cross sections tested in neutrino-induced reactions

Historically, studied in the context of heavy-ion collisions, the extent to which free nucleon-nucleon cross sections are modified in-medium remains undetermined by these data sets. Therefore, we investigate the impact of N N in-medium modifications on neutrino-nucleus cross section predictions using the GiBUU transport model. We find that including an in-medium lowering of the N N cross section and density dependence on Δ excitation improves agreement with MicroBooNE neutrino-argon scattering data. This is observed for both proton and neutral pion spectra in charged-current muon neutrino and neutral-current single pion production data sets. The impact of collision broadening of the Δ resonance is also investigated. The absence of Δ broadening is slightly favored, but the larger uncertainties on the pion production data prevent definitive conclusions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the 𝑌⁡(2175) in the Photoproduction Cross Section Measurement of 𝛾⁢𝑝 → 𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 at GlueX

Based on 334 pb −1 of photoproduction data collected with the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab, we have measured for the first time the cross section of the exclusive reaction 𝛾+𝑝→𝜙⁡(1020)⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 by reconstructing the final state 𝐾 +⁢ 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 produced with a photon beam of energies between 8.0 and 11.6 GeV. Based on the measured differential cross section, we have performed a search for the strangeoniumlike exotic candidate 𝑌⁡(2175), recently renamed to 𝜙⁡(2170). This state has been reported by different 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation experiments and it is addressed here for the first time in a photoproduction experiment. We do not find evidence for this state when using the resonance parameters quoted by the Particle Data Group and provide upper limits on the photoproduction cross section. Instead, we find a structure at a mass of 𝑚⁡(𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) = 2.24 GeV/𝑐 2 with a statistical significance of about 5⁢𝜎. The parameters of this structure differ from those quoted by the Particle Data Group for the 𝜙⁡(2170) and are consistent with a previous observation in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation. In addition, there is evidence for a second structure at 1.82 GeV/𝑐 2 .

Measurement of the e + e − → π + π − π 0 cross section in the energy range 0.62–3.50 GeV at Belle II

We report a measurement of the e + e − → π + π − π 0 cross section in the energy range from 0.62 to 3.50 GeV using an initial-state radiation technique. We use an e + e − data sample corresponding to 191 fb − 1 of integrated luminosity, collected at a center-of-mass energy at or near the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. Signal yields are extracted by fitting the two-photon mass distribution in e + e − → π + π − π 0 γ events, which involve a π 0 → γ γ decay and an energetic photon radiated from the initial state. Signal efficiency corrections with an accuracy of 1.6% are obtained from several control data samples. The uncertainty on the cross section at the ω and ϕ resonances is dominated by the systematic uncertainty of 2.2%. The resulting cross sections in the 0.62–1.80 GeV energy range yield a μ 3 π = [ 48.91 ± 0.23 ( stat ) ± 1.07 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 10 for the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This result differs by 2.5 standard deviations from the most precise current determination. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the A dependence of the ν μ charged-current quasielasticlike cross section as a function of muon and proton kinematics at ⟨E ν ⟩ ∼ 6 GeV

The first simultaneous measurements of the 𝜈 𝜇 quasielasticlike cross section on C, CH, H 2 ⁡O, Fe, and Pb targets as a function of kinematic imbalance variables in the plane transverse to the incoming neutrino direction are presented. These variables combine the muon and proton information to provide a new way to disentangle the effects of the nucleus in quasielasticlike processes. The data were obtained using a wideband 𝜈 𝜇 beam with ⟨E 𝜈 ⟩ ∼ 6 GeV. Cross-section ratios of the different target materials to CH are also shown. These measurements are used to explore the nature of the cross-section 𝐴 scaling, as well as initial and final state interaction effects. Comparisons are made to predictions from a number of commonly used neutrino Monte Carlo event generators. The range of predictions of the different models tends to cover the data but the degree and consistency of the agreement suffers in regions, and on higher 𝐴 targets, where the final state interactions are expected to be more pronounced.

Measurement of the Zγ production cross section and search for anomalous neutral triple gauge couplings in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV

A measurement of the fiducial cross section of the associated production of a Z boson and a high-p$_{T}$ photon, where the Z decays to two neutrinos, and a search for anomalous triple gauge couplings are reported. The results are based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV during 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The fiducial Zγ cross section, where a photon with a p$_{T}$ greater than 225 GeV is produced in association with a Z, and the Z decays to a $ \upnu \overline{\upnu} $ pair $ \left(\mathrm{Z}\left(\upnu \overline{\upnu}\right)\upgamma \right) $, is measured to be $ {23.3}_{-1.3}^{+1.4} $ fb, in agreement, within uncertainties, with the standard model prediction. The differential cross section as a function of the photon p$_{T}$ has been measured and compared with standard model predictions computed at next-to-leading and at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Constraints have been placed on the presence of anomalous couplings that affect the ZZγ and Zγγ vertex using the p$_{T}$ spectrum of the photons. The observed 95% confidence level intervals for CP-conserving $ {h}_3^{\upgamma} $ and $ {h}_4^{\upgamma} $ are determined to be (−3.4, 3.5)×10$^{−4}$ and (−6.8, 6.8)×10$^{−7}$, and for $ {h}_3^{\mathrm{Z}} $ and $ {h}_4^{\mathrm{Z}} $ they are (−2.2, 2.2)×10$^{−4}$ and (−4.1, 4.2)×10$^{−7}$, respectively. These are the strictest limits to date on $ {h}_3^{\upgamma} $, $ {h}_3^{\mathrm{Z}} $ and $ {h}_4^{\mathrm{Z}} $.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

High-energy neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections

We present a state-of-the-art prediction for cross sections of neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from nucleon at high neutrino energies, E v , up to 1000 EeV (10 12 GeV). Our calculations are based on the latest CT18 NNLO parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their associated uncertainties. To make predictions for the highest energies, we extrapolate the PDFs to small x according to several procedures and assumptions, thus affecting the uncertainties at ultrahigh E v ; we quantify the uncertainties corresponding to these choices. Similarly, we quantify the uncertainties introduced by the nuclear corrections that are required to evaluate neutrino-nuclear cross sections for the neutrino observatories. These results can be applied to currently running astrophysical neutrino observatories, such as IceCube and KM3NeT, as well as various future experiments that have been proposed.

Status of the Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Zero Mesons Cross Section at the NOvA Near Detector

NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment at Fermilab whose physics goals include precision neutrino oscillation as well as cross-section measurements. We present the status of the measurement of a muon neutrino charged-current cross section with zero mesons in the final state at the NOvA near detector. This measurement is being made with respect to the kinematics of the final state muon. The chosen interaction channel is especially sensitive to quasielastic and meson exchange current interactions and aims to provide experimental constraints for the development of models of neutrino interactions. It will also provide a handle for constraining cross section systematic uncertainties in oscillation analyses in current and future experiments. For particle identification, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on individual particles simulated in the NOvA near detector that allows us to select the desired signal while reducing the potential bias from neutrino interaction modeling. Charged pion background constraining is further improved via Michel electron tagging.

169 Tm ( n , γ ) cross section and statistical decay properties from measurements at the DANCE facility

Background: Radiative neutron capture on thulium, which is a monoisotopic element, plays a role in different applications such as nuclear astrophysics or nuclear burning environments. Considerable discrepancies—reaching 20%—exist between evaluations in the unresolved-resonance region. Furthermore, experimental data on statistical 𝛾 decay in odd-odd rare-earth nuclei is scarce. There are still open questions about the systematics of the so-called scissors mode in the 𝑀⁢1 photon strength function, especially in odd-odd nuclei. Purpose: This work is focused on two main topics—deriving experimental 169 Tm ⁢(𝑛,𝛾) cross section and studying statistical 𝛾 decay of 170 Tm, in particular properties of the scissors mode. Methods: The capture experiments to obtain experimental cross section were performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center using the time-of-flight technique and employing the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments. Measured coincident 𝛾-ray spectra were also compared with statistical simulations using the dicebox code to test different models of level density and photon strength functions. Results: The capture cross section was determined from 1.8 eV to 0.97 MeV, the broadest neutron-energy range ever measured for this isotope. Several new resonances have been observed. The statistical 𝛾 decay of 170 Tm cannot be reproduced without a scissors mode resonance centered at ≈ 3.3MeV. Conclusions: The measured cross section in the unresolved-resonance region is generally lower than the latest evaluations. The derived 169 Tm 𝑠-process abundance is expected to increase by a factor of 1.26, while the changes of the abundances of elements heavier than 169 Tm are in the order of 0.2%. The scissors mode properties in 170 Tm are similar to those deduced in previous analyses of neighboring nuclei 168 Er and 166 Ho .

Efficient calculation of self magnetic field, self-force, and self-inductance for electromagnetic coils with rectangular cross-section

Abstract For designing high-field electromagnets, the Lorentz force on coils needs to be computed in order to design suitable support structures, and the inductance should be computed to evaluate the stored energy and dynamics. Also, the magnetic field and its variation inside the conductor is of interest for computing stress and strain, and due to superconducting quench limits. For these force, inductance, energy, and internal field calculations, the coils cannot be naively approximated as infinitesimally thin filaments due to divergences when the source and evaluation points coincide, so more computationally demanding calculations are usually required, resolving the finite cross-section of the conductors. Here, we present a new alternative method that enables the internal magnetic field vector, self-force, and self-inductance to be computed rapidly and accurately within a 1D filament model. The method is applicable to coils for which the curve center-line can have general noncircular shape, as long as the conductor width is small compared to the radius of curvature. This paper extends a previous calculation for circular-cross-section conductors (Hurwitz et al 2024 IEEE Trans. Magn. ) to consider the case of rectangular cross-section. The reduced model is derived by rigorous analysis of the singularity, regularizing the filament integrals such that they match the true high-dimensional integrals at high coil aspect ratio. The new filament model exactly recovers analytic results for a circular coil, and is shown to accurately reproduce full finite-cross-section calculations for a non-planar coil of a stellarator magnetic fusion device. Due to the efficiency of the model here, it is well suited for use inside design optimization.

Measurement of the Photoproduction Cross-Section of f1(1285) in the Exclusive Reactions p¿ p'K±KSp± AT 7.5 < E¿ < 11.5 GeV with GlueX at Jefferson Lab

The f1(1285) meson is commonly understood to belong to the axial-vector nonet as the low-mass isoscalar partner to the f1(1420) but has been suggested as a candidate for a KK?+c.c molecule. A nearly mass-degenerate 0?+ state has been observed in ? p scattering that calls into question the established branching ratios of the f1(1285) decays. Recently, the differential cross-section for the photoproduction of f1(1285) was measured by the CLAS experiment and the results disagreed with theoretical predictions. Additionally, the CLAS experiment did not observe a mass-degenerate 0?+ state. We present the results of the first photoproduction cross-section measurement d?/dt of f1(1285) at 7.5 < E? < 11.5 GeV from the GlueX experiment at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in the reactions ? p ? p?K?Ks?+ and ? p ? p?K+Ks??. We find that the production mechanism of f1(1285) is consistent with t-channel exchange. We also observe a difference in the differential cross-section of f1(1285) as a function of ?t as measured in the charge conjugated K?Ks?± decay modes that we hypothesize to be due to baryonic N? interference. The observed distributions of M(KK) and M(K?) are consistent with both a q ¯ q state and predictions for a KK?+c.c molecular state. Additionally, we find that the cross-section at low M(KK?) is dominated by the 1++ state.

First Double-Differential Cross Section Measurement of Neutral-Current 𝜋 0 Production in Neutrino-Argon Scattering in the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first double-differential cross section measurement of neutral-current neutral pion (NC⁢𝜋 0 ) production in neutrino-argon scattering, as well as single-differential measurements of the same channel in terms of final states with and without protons. The kinematic variables of interest for these measurements are the 𝜋 0 momentum and the 𝜋 0 scattering angle with respect to the neutrino beam. A total of 4971 candidate NC⁢𝜋 0 events fully contained within the MicroBooNE detector are selected using data collected at a mean neutrino energy of ∼0.8 GeV from 6.4 ×10 20 protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. After extensive data-driven model validation to ensure unbiased unfolding, the Wiener-singular-value-decomposition method is used to extract nominal flux-averaged cross sections. The results are compared to predictions from commonly used neutrino event generators, which tend to overpredict the measured NC⁢𝜋 0 cross section, especially in the 0.2–0.5 GeV/c 𝜋 0 momentum range and at forward scattering angles. Events with at least one proton present in the final state are also underestimated. This data will help improve the modeling of NC⁢𝜋 0 production, which represents a major background in measurements of charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector and in searches for new physics beyond the standard model.

Extraction of neutron-capture cross sections on 92 Zr using the charge-exchange Oslo method

The 93 Nb (𝑡, 3 He ) reaction at 115 MeV/nucleon was studied to demonstrate that nuclear level densities and 𝛾-ray strength functions can be extracted from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate energies using the Oslo technique. The matrix of excitation energy in 93 Zr, reconstructed from the (𝑡, 3 He ) reaction, versus the energy of 𝛾 rays emitted by the excited 93 Zr nuclei, was obtained in an experiment with the S800 Spectrograph operated in coincidence with the GRETINA 𝛾 -ray detector. The extracted level density and 𝛾 -ray strength function obtained by applying the Oslo method to this matrix were used to estimate the 92 Zr⁢(𝑛,𝛾) ⁢93 Zr cross section by combining the new results with other experimental data and theoretical calculations for 𝐸⁢1 and 𝑀⁢1 strength functions at higher energies. Good agreement with direct measurements of the 92 Zr⁢(𝑛,𝛾)⁢ 93 Zr cross section was found. The contribution from the upbend in the extracted 𝛾-ray strength function was important to achieve the consistency, as the neutron-capture cross section without this contribution is significantly below the direct measurements otherwise. Since charge-exchange reactions at intermediate energies have long been used for extracting Gamow-Teller strengths, the successful demonstration of the charge-exchange Oslo method enables experiments in which (𝑛,𝛾) cross sections and Gamow-Teller strengths can be measured simultaneously, which is of benefit for astrophysical studies.
