Surface elastic wave detectors

The potential applications of acoustic surface wave technology to multiplex communication systems such as data-bus, are examined. The goals are primarily to characterize certain aspects of surface wave trapped delay lines, surface wave modulation techniques, and surface wave applications that are relevant to the evaluation of surface wave devices in multiplex systems. The results indicate that there is a potential for the application of surface wave technology in data-bus type systems.

Spread spectrum communication link using surface wave devices

A fast lock-up, 8-MHz bandwidth 8,000 bit per second data rate spread spectrum communication link breadboard is described that is implemented using surface wave devices as the primary signal generators and signal processing elements. It uses surface wave tapped delay lines in the transmitter to generate the signals and in the receiver to detect them. The breadboard provides a measured processing gain for Gaussian noise of 31.5 dB which is within one dB of the theoretical optimum. This development demonstrates that spread spectrum receivers implemented with surface wave devices have sensitivities and complexities comparable to those of serial correlation receivers, but synchronization search times which are two to three orders of magnitude smaller.

Multiwire proportional counter development

A test run was made at the Bevatron to check the character of signals induced in an electromagnetic delay line capacitively coupled to the wire cathode plane of a multiwire proportional chamber. In particular, these signals and the behavior of the readout electronics as a function of associated delta-ray production are studied. These measurements are important in assessing the effect of delta-ray background on the spatial resolution attainable for the primary ions. Test results are used to design a multiwire proportional chamber and readout system for use as spatial detectors in a superconducting magnetic spectrometer experiment.

Analysis of parallel systems.

A formal analysis procedure for hardware and software computer systems is described. A system is described by a flow table model. The concept of an output hazard is introduced to account for effects of unbounded line delays. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the absence of output hazards are given. A system that contains no output hazards is said to operate correctly if the system state graph that describes all system states and state transitions is free from forbidden states and forbidden state sequences. A flow table solution for the two-component mutual exclusion problem is analyzed and shown to be correct.

Digital TV image enhancement system

Efficient, digital image-enhancement process has been developed for high-resolution slow-scan TV images. Scan converter is no longer subject to registration errors, which become more serious as resolution increases. To implement feedback image enhancement system, digital processing is used; otherwise there is excessive loss of image information, particularly in video delay lines.

Effect of filtering on noise and timing in nuclear particle detection

The relations between signal shaping, noise, and timing resolution in nuclear particle detection systems are examined in this paper. Mathematical analysis of five commonly used types of filters leads to numerical results for system noise components arising from sources in the preamplifier, detector, and bias resistors. These results are presented in the form of design curves for the various filters, showing the dependence of each output noise component on both the magnitude of the noise sources and the filter time constants. Three of the filters considered are simple RC types; the remaining two are combinations of delay lines and RC elements. The quantitative calculations specifically assume a silicon detector and a field-effect-transistor preamplifier. Those filters that exhibit bipolar step response are analyzed in terms of crossover timing resolution, based on the earlier noise calculations. Again, the results are summarized in sets of design curves for each filter. Finally, the comparative performance of the various filter types is discussed, and specific examples are given.

Improved detection technique of a band-limited PCM/NRZ signal.

A simple tapped-delay-line filter in tandem with the receiver that optimally detects a single pulse over a band-limited channel in the presence of Gaussian noise is proposed for reducing the effect of the intersymbol interference in an ideal band-limited PCM/NRZ system. The improvement is described in terms of the gain in signal-to-noise ratio for a specific bit-error probability.

Analysis and synthesis of a fluid sonic pulse system

A nonlinear sonic system is described that includes a delay line. Short-lived pulses with a high repetition frequency circulate through the system. The analysis was carried out by defining the reflection factor at the load and then dividing the input pulse according to duration into sections of appropriate width. The response was determined for each section, the response to the whole pulse being given by the sum of the responses at the sections. This makes it possible to broach the synthesis of a sonic system that will give an output pulse of the desired form.

Digital receiver simulation

Digital simulation of the data link for the Saturn-Uranus spacecraft design is summarized. The data link is a 40 watt, 400 MegaHertz, 44 bit-a-second link, a power starved link, and uses convolution coding. Aspects of the link of particular interest are atmospheric scintillation and the Doppler to data rate ratio. The major characteristics of the scintillation are modeled in terms of tapped delay lines. A candidate system design and receiver design is developed. A computer flow diagram depicting a routine for the error rate and one for acquisition is presented. Various coding algorithms are analyzed since the convolution code is sensitive to the distribution of error and the actual pattern of the error.

Digital simulation of a 30-cm diameter ion thruster control system

A hybrid model of a 30-cm diameter ion thruster and transistorized power processor was formulated and implemented on a digital computer. The control loops as presented are stable for normal values of loop gain when propellant line delay times are zero. Small oscillations are present in the loops when representative thruster delay times are included in the model. Discharge supply characteristics can affect the control loop oscillations. Recovery from runaway can be aggravated by delay time and, to a greater extent, by discharge supply characteristics.

Phase conjugation method and apparatus for an active retrodirective antenna array

An active retrodirective antenna array wherein a reference array element is used to generate a phase reference which is replicated at succeeding elements of the array. Each element of the array is associated with a phase regeneration circuit and the phase conjugation circuitry of an adjacent element. In one implementation, the phase reference circuit operates on the input signal at the reference element, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) output signal and the input pilot signal at the next array element received from a transmission line. By proper filtering and mixing, a phase component may be produced to which the VCO may be locked to produce the phase conjugate of the pilot signal at the next array element plus a transmission line delay. In another implementation, particularly suited for large arrays in space, two different input pilot frequencies are employed.
