Solar Dynamic Power System Stability Analysis and Control

The objective of this research is to conduct dynamic analysis, control design, and control performance test of solar power system. Solar power system consists of generation system and distribution network system. A bench mark system is used in this research, which includes a generator with excitation system and governor, an ac/dc converter, six DDCU's and forty-eight loads. A detailed model is used for modeling generator. Excitation system is represented by a third order model. DDCU is represented by a seventh order system. The load is modeled by the combination of constant power and constant impedance. Eigen-analysis and eigen-sensitivity analysis are used for system dynamic analysis. The effects of excitation system, governor, ac/dc converter control, and the type of load on system stability are discussed. In order to improve system transient stability, nonlinear ac/dc converter control is introduced. The direct linearization method is used for control design. The dynamic analysis results show that these controls affect system stability in different ways. The parameter coordination of controllers are recommended based on the dynamic analysis. It is concluded from the present studies that system stability is improved by the coordination of control parameters and the nonlinear ac/dc converter control stabilize system oscillation caused by the load change and system fault efficiently.

Skeletal mass change as a function of gravitational loading

The hypothesis that increased loading on an animal by chronic centrifugation results in an increase in skeletal mass was tested, using metabolically mature hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, Dutch rabbits and New Zealand rabbits representing a body mass range from 0.15 to 3.8 kg. Groups of 12 male animals of each species were subjeted to 2.0 g for 6 weeks on a 2.74 radius centrifuge with one degree of freedom. Subsequently, six of the animals were killed to measure whole body composition, while the rest comprised the control group, recovering for four weeks at 1.0 g prior to composition analysis. Results show a significant increase in bone mineral mass at 2.0 g. These centrifuge experiment results were then compared with the results of the USSR Cosmos Biosatellite experiment, whereby five rats experienced osteoporosis after 18.5 days of weightlessness. The opposing nature of effects that occurred at 0 g and 2.0 g is indicated schematically of particular interest is the fact that the bone mineral mass of the Cosmos 1129 flight rats was 17 pct less than that of the 1.0 g controls; whereas the bone mineral mass of the centrifuge rats was 18 pct greater than that of their 1.0 g controls. It is concluded that the bone mineral mass of the rat is directly proportional to gravitational loading over the range of 0 g to 2.0 g.

Ultrafast dense DNA functionalization of quantum dots and rods for scalable 2D array fabrication with nanoscale precision

Scalable fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) arrays of quantum dots (QDs) and quantum rods (QRs) with nanoscale precision is required for numerous device applications. However, self-assembly–based fabrication of such arrays using DNA origami typically suffers from low yield due to inefficient QD and QR DNA functionalization. In addition, it is challenging to organize solution-assembled DNA origami arrays on 2D device substrates while maintaining their structural fidelity. Here, we reduced manufacturing time from a few days to a few minutes by preparing high-density DNA-conjugated QDs/QRs from organic solution using a dehydration and rehydration process. We used a surface-assisted large-scale assembly (SALSA) method to construct 2D origami lattices directly on solid substrates to template QD and QR 2D arrays with orientational control, with overall loading yields exceeding 90%. Our fabrication approach enables the scalable, high fidelity manufacturing of 2D addressable QDs and QRs with nanoscale orientational and spacing control for functional 2D photonic devices.

Lifting-surface theory for calculating the loading induced on a wing by a flap

A method is described for using lifting-surface theory to obtain the pressure distribution on a wing with a trailing-edge flap or control surface. The loading has a logarithmic singularity at the flap edges, which may be determined directly by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Expressions are given for the singular flap loading for various flap hinge line and side edge geometries, both for steady and unsteady flap deflection. The regular part of the flap loading must be obtained by inverting the lifting-surface-theory integral equation relating the pressure and the downwash on the wing: procedures are described to accomplish this for a general wing and flap geometry. The method is applied to several example wings, and the results are compared with experimental data. Theory and test correlate well.

Controller for a High-Power, Brushless dc Motor

Driving and braking torques controllable. Control circuit operates 7-kW, 45-lb-ft (61-N-m), three-phase, brushless dc motor in both motor and generator modes. In motor modes, energy from power source is pulse-width modulated to motor through modified "H-bridge" circuit, in generator mode, energy from motor is pulse-width modulated into bank of load resistors to provide variable braking torques. Circuit provides high-resolution torque control in both directions over wide range of speeds and torques. Tested successfully at bus voltages up to 200 Vdc and currents up to 45 A.

Guideline For Design Of Adaptive Structures

Guideline for design of adaptive structures specifies active members should be located at positions of maximum strain energy. Equations of motion of flexible structures formulated in terms of kinetic energies, strain energies, and direct measurements of forces. Maintaining precise dimensional control during assembly essential to assembly without large external loads or to prevent jamming of substructure preventing successful deployment. Active members used to prevent "binding" during deployment of structure. Then structure adjusted to precision shape requirement and adjusted during operation as required.

A Trade-Off Study Between the Primary and Transient Responses of Grid-Forming Inverters

The control parameters of the grid-forming (GFM) inverter-based resources (IBRs) directly impact power system dynamics. The primary control requires the GFM inverter to balance generation and load. It is also preferred that a GFM inverter maintain the terminal frequency after a power system fault. In this paper, we investigate the trade-off between the primary control objective and the transient response. To quantify the transient performance of the GFM inverter, we introduce a new real-time transient stability index (TSI). This index plays a crucial role in our investigation, as it allows us to compare the performance trade-offs of different sets of GFM control parameters.

Restoring Critical Loads In Resilient Distribution Systems using A Curriculum Learned Controller

In this paper, we propose a curriculum learned reinforcement learning (RL) controller to facilitate distribution system critical load restoration (CLR), leveraging RL's fast online response and its outstanding optimal sequential control capability. Like many grid control problems, CLR is complicated due to the large control action space and renewable uncertainty in a heavily constrained non-linear environment with strong intertemporal dependency. The nature of the problem oftentimes causes the RL policy to converge to a poor-performing local optimum if learned directly. To overcome this, we design a two-stage curriculum in which the RL agent will learn generation control and load restoration decision under different scenarios progressively. Via curriculum learning, the trained RL controller is expected to achieve a better control performance, with critical loads restored as rapidly and reliably as possible. Using the IEEE 13-bus test system, we illustrate the performance of the RL controller trained by the proposed curriculum-based method.

Controlled impact demonstration airframe bending bridges

The calibration of the KRASH and DYCAST models for transport aircraft is discussed. The FAA uses computer analysis techniques to predict the response of controlled impact demonstration (CID) during impact. The moment bridges can provide a direct correlation between the predictive loads or moments that the models will predict and what was experienced during the actual impact. Another goal is to examine structural failure mechanisms and correlate with analytical predictions. The bending bridges did achieve their goals and objectives. The data traces do provide some insight with respect to airframe loads and structural response. They demonstrate quite clearly what's happening to the airframe. A direct quantification of metal airframe loads was measured by the moment bridges. The measured moments can be correlated with the KRASH and DYCAST computer models. The bending bridge data support airframe failure mechanisms analysis and provide residual airframe strength estimation. It did not appear as if any of the bending bridges on the airframe exceeded limit loads. (The observed airframe fracture was due to the fuselage encounter with the tomahawk which tore out the keel beam.) The airframe bridges can be used to estimate the impact conditions and those estimates are correlating with some of the other data measurements. Structural response, frequency and structural damping are readily measured by the moment bridges.

Multi-Objective Optimal Control of High Aspect Ratio Wing Wind Tunnel Model

This paper presents the design of a multi-objective optimal controller for the 13.5 aspect ratio Common Research Model (CRM) wind tunnel model. A Pareto front analysis is performed to provide the optimal tradeoff between the competing objectives - gust load alleviation, maneuver load alleviation, and drag minimization - so that the weighting matrices for the control law are selected optimally. Also presented are two formulations of the controller: a state feedback with Kalman filter design, and an output feedback form where sensors are used directly for feedback control. The controller demonstrates a reduced peak-to-peak strain of 45.78% while also reducing drag and mean bending moment. An output feedback formulation for gust load alleviation is formulated and produces a 53% reduction in the strain response due to a gust input.

Control Augmented Structural Synthesis

A methodology for control augmented structural synthesis is proposed for a class of structures which can be modeled as an assemblage of frame and/or truss elements. It is assumed that both the plant (structure) and the active control system dynamics can be adequately represented with a linear model. The structural sizing variables, active control system feedback gains and nonstructural lumped masses are treated simultaneously as independent design variables. Design constraints are imposed on static and dynamic displacements, static stresses, actuator forces and natural frequencies to ensure acceptable system behavior. Multiple static and dynamic loading conditions are considered. Side constraints imposed on the design variables protect against the generation of unrealizable designs. While the proposed approach is fundamentally more general, here the methodology is developed and demonstrated for the case where: (1) the dynamic loading is harmonic and thus the steady state response is of primary interest; (2) direct output feedback is used for the control system model; and (3) the actuators and sensors are collocated.

A Local Condensation Analysis Representing Two-phase Annular Flow in Condenser/radiator Capillary Tubes

NASA's effort for the thermal environmental control of the Space Station Freedom is directed towards the design, analysis, and development of an Active Thermal Control System (ATCS). A two phase, flow through condenser/radiator concept was baselined, as a part of the ATCS, for the radiation of space station thermal load into space. The proposed condenser rejects heat through direct condensation of ATCS working fluid (ammonia) in the small diameter radiator tubes. Analysis of the condensation process and design of condenser tubes are based on the available two phase flow models for the prediction of flow regimes, heat transfer, and pressure drops. The prediction formulas use the existing empirical relationships of friction factor at gas-liquid interface. An attempt is made to study the stability of interfacial waves in two phase annular flow. The formulation is presented of a stability problem in cylindrical coordinates. The contribution of fluid viscosity, surface tension, and transverse radius of curvature to the interfacial surface is included. A solution is obtained for Kelvin-Helmholtz instability problem which can be used to determine the critical and most dangerous wavelengths for interfacial waves.

Load relief and gust alleviation control study

The results of a study are presented in which a computerized optimal control techique was applied to the synthesis of a load relief control system for an advanced Saturn 5 derivative launch vehicle. This technique included selection of a load relief control law and computerized optimization of the controller gain schedules for a set of preselected adverse synthetic wind speed profiles. The gain optimization was effected using a hybrid optimizer program to minimize (optimize) a direct performance functional which specified the design goal (load relief) in engineering terms (explicit representation of maximum bending moments).

Ruled and holographic experiment (AO 138-5)

The AO 138-5 experiment was designed, via the FRECOPA (FRench COoperative PAyload) experiment with the aim to study the optical behavior of different diffraction gratings submitted to space vacuum long exposure and solar irradiation. Samples were ruled and holographic gratings, masters or replica, and some additional control mirrors with various coatings. The experiment was located on the B3, trailing edge of the LDEF and was protected against Atomic Oxygen flux. The experienced thermal cycling was evaluated from -23 C to 66 C during the flight, 34,000 orbits. The samples (two batches of four pieces) were located on a dedicated plate, by a pair of equivalent gratings or mirrors; optical faces were located on the external side. The plate was inside a canister, which had been opened in space for ten months. When the satellite returned to Kennedy Space Center, the remaining vacuum in the canister was still correct. The analysis focused on the triple point characterization including light efficiency, wavefront flatness quality and stray light level. Tests were conducted on control mirrors and gratings (rules and holographic master or replica) loaded but not exposed to cosmic dust or direct solar irradiations. They did not show any significant variations. Solar exposure had damaged the coating (aluminum and platinum) reflectivity in the Ultra-Violet region; the degradation is higher with the gratings, in terms of efficiency. However, wavefront flatness quality and stray light level tests revealed no additional changes.

Dielectric Properties of Conductively Loaded Polyimides in the Far Infrared

The dielectric properties of selected conductively-loaded polyimide samples are characterized in the microwave through far-infrared wavebands. These materials, belonging to the Vespel family, are more readily formed by direct machining than their ceramic-loaded epoxy counterparts and present an interesting solution for realizing absorptive optical control structures. Measurements spanning a spectral range from 1 to 600 cm(exp −1) (0.03–18 THz) were performed and used in parametrization of the media’s dielectric function at frequencies below ≈3 THz.

Investigation of Direct Force Control for Planetary Aerocapture at Neptune

In this work, a direct force control numerical predictor-corrector guidance architecture is developed to enable Neptune aerocapture using flight-heritage blunt body aeroshells. A linear aerodynamics model is formulated for a Mars Science Laboratory-derived aeroshell. The application of calculus of variations shows that the optimal angle of attack and side-slip angle control laws are bang-bang. A closed-loop numerical predictor-corrector direct force control guidance algorithm is developed and numerically simulated using the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories II. The Monte Carlo simulated trajectories are demonstrated to be robust to the modeled dispersions in aerodynamics, atmospheric density, and entry state. An aerocapture technology trade study demonstrates that blunt body direct force control aerocapture enables similar performance as slender body bank angle control but halves the peak g-loading.

Deadband Voltage Control and Power Buffering for Extreme Fast Charging Station

Voltage fluctuation is one of the most common challenges that electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) may introduce to the power grid. Local reactive power compensation (Q-compensation) capability of bi-directional electric vehicle (EV) chargers can mitigate the steady-state voltage violations caused by the EV charging itself or changes in the neighboring loads. Power buffering, using energy storage system (ESS), can be utilized to address the voltage transients (sags and swells) as a result of EV charging at the EVCS. To address PI controller’s ‘hunting’ issue, this paper proposes a Q-sign triggered deadband voltage control (V-control) method at the point of common coupling (PCC). In addition, to ensure the ramp rate of EV charging is within the allowable limits set forth by the grid code, a ramp rate control is proposed that uses the ESS as a ‘power buffer’. Lastly, different from most reported work in the literature where no explicit limit of the power electronic converters (PECs) is considered, this work considers a reasonable apparent power capacity limit of the PECs when achieving the V-control. This limit also affects the amount of active power that can be obtained from the grid, and subsequently may require ESS to function as ‘load sharing’ device to provide supplemental active power to satisfy EV load. A case study simulated in MATLAB (interfaced with PLECS) is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches for EVCS operation.
