Quantum Reinforcement Learning for Volt-VAR Control in Power Distribution Systems

Volt-VAR control (VVC) is crucial in active distribution networks for optimizing voltage profiles and minimizing network losses. While traditional deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms exhibit promise for VVC, they often require extensive computational resources to handle such a high-dimensional problem. As a potential solution, quantum reinforcement learning (QRL) algorithms integrate the computational capabilities of quantum computing into the DRL framework. However, existing QRL algorithms struggle with complex VVC problems due to the limitations of current quantum hardware. To bridge this gap, this paper proposes an innovative QRL algorithm featuring an end-to-end architecture that integrates a classical autoencoder, variational quantum circuits (VQCs), and classical post-processing layers. This design efficiently compresses high-dimensional grid states, enabling VQCs to leverage quantum advantages while producing multiple control device outputs tailored for VVC tasks. Numerical studies on three representative distribution systems verify the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed QRL algorithm, and demonstrate its enhanced performance over classical approaches with only approximately 1% of the parameters. Additionally, the robustness of our developed algorithm is validated through noisy quantum environments.

A cascaded Schwarz converter for high frequency power distribution

It is shown that two Schwarz converters in cascade provide a very reliable 20-kHz source that features zero current commutation, constant frequency, and fault-tolerant operation, meeting requirements for spacecraft applications. A steady-state analysis of the converter is presented, and equations for the steady-state performance are derived. Fault-current limiting is discussed. Experimental results are presented for a 900-W version, which has been successfully tested under no-load, full-load, and short-circut conditions.

The state-of-the-art of dc power distribution systems/components for space applications

This report is a survey of the state of the art of high voltage dc systems and components. This information can be used for consideration of an alternative secondary distribution (120 Vdc) system for the Space Station. All HVdc components have been prototyped or developed for terrestrial, aircraft, and spacecraft applications, and are applicable for general space application with appropriate modification and qualification. HVdc systems offer a safe, reliable, low mass, high efficiency and low EMI alternative for Space Station secondary distribution.

Research study on multi-KW DC distribution system

Power distribution system noise and transient stress on switchgear in large space vehicle power systems were investigated in terms of the effect of flight designs of long power distribution cables on load interface EMI requirements. A fifty meter cable pair was simulated to study interactions between the cable, load, and power source terminations. Power system noise characteristics were evaluated based on current spacecraft data, interface hardware filter designs, and power cable parameters. Parametric approaches were defined for evaluating switching transients at various distribution voltage levels. It is concluded that the state-of-the-art semiconductor switches represent a viable approach toward the implementation of power system design with distribution voltages of 120 VDC or less. The interface definition and design for the bus control unit was updated to be consistent with the established requirements.

The microwave rectifier technology, approaches to the receiving antenna, topology of rectenna circuits, assembly and construction, ROM cost estimates are discussed. Analyses and cost estimates for the equipment required to transmit the ground power to an external user. Noise and harmonic considerations are presented for both the amplitron and klystron and interference limits are identified and evaluated. The risk assessment discussion is discussed wherein technology risks are rated and ranked with regard to their importance in impacting the microwave power transmission system. The system analyses and evaluation are included of parametric studies of system relationships pertaining to geometry, materials, specific cost, specific weight, efficiency, converter packing, frequency selection, power distribution, power density, power output magnitude, power source, transportation and assembly. Capital costs per kW and energy costs as a function of rate of return, power source and transportation costs as well as build cycle time are presented. The critical technology and ground test program are discussed along with ROM costs and schedule. The orbital test program with associated critical technology and ground based program based on full implementation of the defined objectives is discussed.

Development of a Distribution Optimal Power Flow Federate for Open-Source OEDI-SI Platform

Increasing numbers of distributed generators in the electric power distribution networks require developing a control strategy to optimize solutions in real time. Linearized optimal distribution flow development has seen growth and acceptance in the distribution systems literature for efficiently modeling the \glspl{opf} for distribution systems. This paper examines the implementation and integration procedure for linearized optimal distribution flow federate to \gls{oedisi} platform. Specifically, we discuss i) the usage of the \gls{oedisi} platform, ii) obtaining a tractable solution using developed \gls{opf} federate, and iii) validation of solutions and bench-marking the \gls{oedisi} platform with developed \gls{opf} federate using OpenDSS. In brief, we demonstrate how a general linearized optimal distribution flow federate can be developed and integrated with a co-simulation environment to mimic real-world examples. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated using the IEEE 123-bus test system under different scenarios to obtain a tractable solution and compare its results.
