Numeric and fluid dynamic representation of tornadic double vortex thunderstorms

Current understanding of a double vortex thunderstorm involves a pair of contra-rotating vortices that exists in the dynamic updraft. The pair is believed to be a result of a blocking effect which occurs when a cylindrical thermal updraft of a thunderstorm protrudes into the upper level air and there is a large amount of vertical wind shear between the low level and upper level air layers. A numerical tornado prediction scheme based on the double vortex thunderstorm was developed. The Energy-Shear Index (ESI) is part of the scheme and is calculated from radiosonde measurements. The ESI incorporates parameters representative of thermal instability and blocking effect, and indicates appropriate environments for which the development of double vortex thunderstorms is likely.

Numerical simulations of plasma double layers

The results of analytical studies of quasi-static electric fields along geomagnetic field lines are discussed. The calculations were targeted at the structure, generation mechanisms and stability parameters. The field consists of two oppositely charged layers, either weakly or strongly charged, with an electric field between. Existence conditions are defined for the double layer field and balancing requirements are explored. Details of the simulation techniques, i.e., particle in cell and Vlasov simulations, for studying the double layer are outlined, noting that both periodic and quasi-periodic simulations are used. Solutions to Poisson's equation for fixed and floating point boundary conditions are generated. Finally, attention is also given to oblique and two-dimensional magnetic double layers.

Accretion onto neutron stars with the presence of a double layer

It is known from laboratory experiments that double layers can form in plasmas, usually in the presence of an electric current. It is argued that a double layer may be present in the accretion column of a neutron star in a binary system. It is suggested that the double layer may be the predominant deceleration mechanism for the accreting ions, especially for sources with X-ray luminosities of less than about 10 to the 37th erg/s. Previous models have involved either a collisionless shock or an assumed gradual deceleration of the accreting ions to thermalize the energy of the infalling matter.

Transitions to chaos in two-dimensional double-diffusive convection

The partial differential equations governing two-dimensional thermosolutal convection in a Boussinesq fluid with free boundary conditions have been solved numerically in a regime where oscillatory solutions can be found. A systematic study of the transition from nonlinear periodic oscillations to temporal chaos has revealed sequences of period-doubling bifurcations. Overstability occurs if the ratio of the solutal to the thermal diffusivity tau is less than 1 and the solutal Rayleigh number Rs is sufficiently large. Solutions have been obtained for two representative values of tau. For tau = 0.316, R(s) = 10,000, symmetrical oscillations undergo a bifurcation to asymmetry, followed by a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations leading to aperiodicity, as the thermal Rayleigh number R(T) is increased. At higher values of R(T), the bifurcation sequence is repeated in reverse, restoring simple periodic solutions. As R(T) is further increased more period-doubling cascades, followed by chaos, can be identified. Within the chaotic regions there are narrow periodic windows, and multiple branches of oscillatory solutions coexist. Eventually the oscillatory branch ends and only steady solutions can be found. The development of chaos has been investigated for tau = 0.1 by varying R(T) for several different values of R(s). When R(s) is sufficiently small there are periodic solutions whose period becomes infinite at the end of the oscillatory branch. As R(s) is increased, chaos appears in the neighborhood of these heteroclinic orbits. At higher values of R(s), chaos is found for a broader range in R(T). A truncated fifth-order model suggest that the appearance of chaos is associated with heteroclinic bifurcations.

Investigation of leading-edge flap performance on delta and double-delta wings at supersonic speeds

An investigation of the aerodynamic performance of leading-edge flaps on three clipped delta and three clipped double-delta wing planforms with aspect ratios of 1.75, 2.11, and 2.50 was conducted in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at Mach numbers of 1.60, 1.90, and 2.16. A primary set of fullspan leading-edge flaps with similar root and tip chords were investigated on each wing, and several alternate flap planforms were investigated on the aspect-ratio-1.75 wings. All leading-edge flap geometries were effective in reducing the drag at lifting conditions over the range of wing aspect ratios and Mach numbers tested. Application of a primary flap resulted in better flap performance with the double-delta planform than with the delta planform. The primary flap geometry generally yielded better performance than the alternate flap geometries tested. Trim drag due to flap-induced pitching moments was found to reduce the leading-edge flap performance more for the delta planform than for the double-delta planform. Flow-visualization techniques showed that leading-edge flap deflection reduces crossflow shock-induced separation effects. Finally, it was found that modified linear theory consistently predicts only the effects of leading-edge flap deflection as related to pitching moment and lift trends.

Formation mechanisms of laboratory double layers

The evolution processes of double layers were studied in a series of laboratory experiments. It was found that the existence of virtual cathode-type potential wells at the electron injection boundary was the dominant triggering mechanism. The rapid growth of the potential wells led to collisionless ion trapping and the establishment of the necessary trapped ion population. For double layers with small potential drops, collisionless ion trapping actually induced ion-ion streaming instabilities and the formation of ion phase-space vortices. In this regime, the system often exhibited relaxation-type oscillations which correspond to the disruption and the recovery of the double layers.

Anomalous transport in discrete arcs and simulation of double layers in a model auroral circuit

The evolution and long-time stability of a double layer (DL) in a discrete auroral arc requires that the parallel current in the arc, which may be considered uniform at the source, be diverted within the arc to charge the flanks of the U-shaped double layer potential structure. A simple model is presented in which this current redistribution is effected by anomalous transport based on electrostatic lower hybrid waves driven by the flank structure itself. This process provides the limiting constraint on the double layer potential. The flank charging may be represented as that of a nonlinear transmission line. A simplified model circuit, in which the transmission line is represented by a nonlinear impedance in parallel with a variable resistor, is incorporated in a one-dimensional simulation model to give the current density at the DL boundaries. Results are presented for the scaling of the DL potential as a function of the width of the arc and the saturation efficiency of the lower hybrid instability mechanism.

A fully redundant double difference algorithm for obtaining minimum variance estimates from GPS observations

In double differencing a regression system obtained from concurrent Global Positioning System (GPS) observation sequences, one either undersamples the system to avoid introducing colored measurement statistics, or one fully samples the system incurring the resulting non-diagonal covariance matrix for the differenced measurement errors. A suboptimal estimation result will be obtained in the undersampling case and will also be obtained in the fully sampled case unless the color noise statistics are taken into account. The latter approach requires a least squares weighting matrix derived from inversion of a non-diagonal covariance matrix for the differenced measurement errors instead of inversion of the customary diagonal one associated with white noise processes. Presented is the so-called fully redundant double differencing algorithm for generating a weighted double differenced regression system that yields equivalent estimation results, but features for certain cases a diagonal weighting matrix even though the differenced measurement error statistics are highly colored.

Transition probabilities in OH A 2 sigma + - X 2 pi i: Bands with v prime = 0 and 1, v double prime = 0 to 4

Experimental results for relative vibrational band transition probabilities for v prime = 0 and 1, and v double prime = 0 to 4 in the A-X electronic system of OH are presented. The measurements, part of a larger set involving v prime = 0 to 4 and v double prime = 0 to 6, were made using spectrally dispersed laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in the burnt gases of a flame. These Einstein coefficients will be useful in dynamics experiments for quantitative LIF determinations of OH radical concentrations in high v double prime.

A novel approach to a PPM-modulated frequency-doubled electro-optic cavity-dumped Nd:YAG laser

A technique which can provide frequency doubling, with high efficiency, while cavity dumping a laser for pulse position M-ary modulation while being used for an optical communication link is discussed. This approach uses a secondary cavity that provides feedback of the undoubled fundamental light, which is normally lost, into the primary cavity to be recirculated and frequency doubled. Specific operations of the electrooptic modulator and frequency-doubling crystal are described along with the overall modulation scheme and experimental setup.

Proposed communication system based on multiple-phase-shift-keying (MPSK) modulation includes double differential encoder in transmitter and double differential detector in receiver. Transmitter generates phase-modulated signal suitable for decoding and detection by subsystem. Detector removes Doppler-frequency component from noisy, Doppler-shifted signal encoded in subsystem. Overall effect of double-differential scheme to cancel effect of Doppler shift on modulation in received signal. Not necessary to estimate Doppler shift to correct for it.

Double-Swivel Mechanism For Reliable Release

Double-swivel toggle mechanism releases large, heavy objects reliably. Double-swiveling action of mechanism ensures it clears restraining pins upon release. Pins retain toggle and its load. If pin fails to withdraw at designated time for releasing payload, toggle swivels about its upper ball, and ring swivels about lower ball so ring flange clears failed pin. Double-swivel action ensures disengagement even it two pins fail to withdraw.

0108 + 388 - A compact double source with surprising properties

49 cm, 6 cm, and 20 cm observations of the compact double ratio source 0108 + 388 are presented. Extended emission about 20 deg to the east of the core is detected which resembles a hot spot/lobe with a bridge of emission extending back to the core. This is the first detection of extended emission associated with such a source, and it is inconsistent with the suggestion that such sources are very young classical double radio sources. The inconsistency can be reconciled if the activity in this object is recurrent and the emission is the relic of a previous epoch of activity. Alternatively, the source may be a normal-aged radio galaxy in which most of the radio-emitting plasma is currently unable to escape the nuclear regions of the galaxy. The steep low-frequency spectrum of the core is probably related to the origin of the compact double and suggests that both components are very sharply confined on both their inner and outer edges.

Double face sealing device

A double face sealing device is disclosed for mounting between two surfaces to provide an air-tight and fluid-tight seal between a closure member bearing one of the surfaces and a structure or housing bearing the other surface which extends around the opening or hatchway to be closed. The double face sealing device includes a plurality of sections or segments mounted to one of the surfaces, each having a main body portion, a pair of outwardly extending and diverging, cantilever, spring arms, and a pair of inwardly extending and diverging, cantilever, spring arms, an elastomeric cover on the distal, free ends of the outwardly extending and diverging spring arms, and an elastomeric cover on the distal, free, ends of the outwardly extending and diverging spring arms, and an elastomeric cover on the distal, free ends of the inwardly extending and diverging spring arms. The double face sealing device has application or use in all environments requiring a seal, but is particularly useful to seal openings or hatchways between compartments of spacecraft or aircraft.

Evidence of chaotic pattern in solar flux through a reproducible sequence of period-doubling-type bifurcations

Presented here is a preliminary study of the limits to solar flux intensity prediction, and of whether the general lack of predictability in the solar flux arises from the nonlinear chaotic nature of the Sun's physical activity. Statistical analysis of a chaotic signal can extract only its most gross features, and detailed physical models fail, since even the simplest equations of motion for a nonlinear system can exhibit chaotic behavior. A recent theory by Feigenbaum suggests that nonlinear systems that can be led into chaotic behavior through a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations will exhibit a universal behavior. As the control parameter is increased, the bifurcation points occur in such a way that a proper ratio of these will approach the universal Feigenbaum number. Experimental evidence supporting the applicability of the Feigenbaum scenario to solar flux data is sparse. However, given the hypothesis that the Sun's convection zones are similar to a Rayleigh-Bernard mechanism, we can learn a great deal from the remarkable agreement observed between the prediction by theory (period doubling - a universal route to chaos) and the amplitude decrease of the signal's regular subharmonics. The authors show that period-doubling-type bifurcation is a possible route to a chaotic pattern of solar flux that is distinguishable from the logarithm of its power spectral density. This conclusion is the first positive step toward a reformulation of solar flux by a nonlinear chaotic approach. The ultimate goal of this research is to be able to predict an estimate of the upper and lower bounds for solar flux within its predictable zones. Naturally, it is an important task to identify the time horizons beyond which predictability becomes incompatible with computability.
