Efforts by manufacturers to produce more cost-effective carbon fibers have resulted in fibers with irregular cross-section often referred to as kidney-bean shaped fibers. In this research, compaction experiments were performed with a modified laser light section method to evaluate the compaction behavior of kidney-bean shaped carbon fibers. The kidney-bean shaped fibers followed a different compaction behavior compared to the Gutowski model for circular fibers. Additionally, these fibers required an order of magnitude larger force to compact than circular fibers to achieve similar fiber volume fraction, which has implications in infiltration and consolidation efficiency for composites manufacturing. A shape correction factor based on the fiber cross-sectional aspect ratio was proposed to extend the Gutowski model to fibers with irregular cross-sectional shapes. The modified Gutowski model provided an appropriate order of magnitude fit for the kidney-bean fibers. Furthermore, this modification to the Gutowski model recovered the original solution for circular fibers (cross-sectional aspect ratio = 1).
A technique that predicts the field flatness of the operating pi-mode based on the passband frequency is highly desirable when the direct measurement of the field is not available. Such a technique was developed for the SNS-PPU cavity, a 6-cell SRF cavity whose field flatness is important for cold operation. In this paper, we will present the theory on the relations between field profile and passband frequencies of the arbitrary deformed cavities, the simulation studies, and comparison with the experimental measurements.
The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a new nuclear phys-ics research facility to be constructed at Brookhaven Lab (BNL). It consists a few accelerator complexes, each re-quires some different SRF and RF systems. Among them, the electron storage ring?s (ESR) 591 MHz fundamental RF system is one of the most challenging. This 17 cavi-ties system will handle a variable beam current of up to 2.5 A, and replenish up to 10 MW of beam power losses from both synchrotron radiation (SR) and high-order modes (HOM). In this paper, we will report the progress and findings of the ongoing design and prototyping of this cavity.
Galaxy clusters are the largest known gravitationally bound structures in the universe, consisting of hundreds to thousands of galaxies (Figure 1). Dark matter contributes the majority of mass to galaxy clusters, and therefore has a strong influence on the arrangement of member galaxies. By determining the shape of galaxy clusters, we can figure out the shape of the dark matter, which is important for cosmology and galaxy formation studies.

This paper introduces a novel eXtended virtual element method, an extension of the conforming virtual element method. The X-VEM is formulated by incorporating appropriate enrichment functions in the local spaces. The method is designed to handle highly generic enrichment functions, including singularities arising from fractured domains. By achieving consistency on the enrichment space, the method is proven to achieve arbitrary approximation orders even in the presence of singular solutions. The paper includes a complete convergence analysis under general assumptions on mesh regularity, and numerical experiments validating the method’s accuracy on various mesh families, demonstrating optimal convergence rates in the L 2 - and H 1 - norms on fractured or L-shaped domains.
