Four-derivative corrections to minimal gauged supergravity in five dimensions

We study four-derivative corrections to pure N = 2, D = 5 gauged supergravity. In particular, we find that, up to field redefinitions, there is a single four-derivative superinvariant that one can add to the action, up to factors of the two-derivative action. Consequently, this selects out a unique set of coefficients for the four-derivative corrections. We confirm these coefficients (in the ungauged limit) on the BMPV solution.

Incidence of chronic respiratory conditions among oil spill responders: Five years of follow-up in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Coast Guard Cohort study

Background: Over ten years after the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, our understanding of long term respiratory health risks associated with oil spill response exposures is limited. Here we conducted a prospective analysis in a cohort of U.S. Coast Guard personnel with universal military healthcare. Methods: For all active duty cohort members (N = 45,193) in the DWH Oil Spill Coast Guard Cohort Study we obtained medical encounter data from October 01, 2007 to September 30, 2015 (i.e., ~2.5 years pre-spill; ~5.5 years post-spill). We used Cox Proportional Hazards regressions to calculate adjusted hazard ratios (aHR), comparing risks for incident respiratory conditions/symptoms (2010–2015) for: responders vs. non-responders; responders reporting crude oil exposure, any inhalation of crude oil vapors, and being in the vicinity of burning crude oil versus responders without those exposures. We also evaluated self-reported crude oil and oil dispersant exposures, combined. Within-responder comparisons were adjusted for age, sex, and smoking. Results: While elevated aHRs for responder/non-responder comparisons were generally weak, within-responder comparisons showed stronger risks with exposure to crude oil. Notably, for responders reporting exposure to crude oil via inhalation, there were elevated risks for all sinusitis (aHR = 1.48; 95%CI, 1.06–2.06), unspecified chronic sinusitis (aHR = 1.55; 95%CI, 1.08–2.22), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other allied conditions (aHR = 1.43; 95%CI, 1.00–2.06), and dyspnea and respiratory abnormalities (aHR = 1.29; 95%CI, 1.00–1.67); there was a suggestion of elevated risk for diseases classified as asthma and reactive airway diseases (aHR = 1.18; 95%CI, 0.98–1.41), including the specific condition, asthma (aHR = 1.35; 95%CI, 0.80–2.27), the symptom, shortness of breath (aHR = 1.50; 95%CI, 0.89–2.54), and the overall classification of chronic respiratory conditions (aHR = 1.18; 95%CI, 0.98–1.43). Exposure to both crude oil and dispersant was positively associated with elevated risk for shortness of breath (HR = 2.24; 95%CI, 1.09–4.64). Conclusions: Among active duty Coast Guard personnel, oil spill clean-up exposures were associated with moderately increased risk for longer term respiratory conditions.

Electropolishing parameters study for surface smoothening of low-$\beta$650 MHz five-cell niobium superconducting radio frequency cavity

Electropolishing (EP) is applied to niobium (Nb) superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities, which are used in particle accelerators for their surface treatment. The EP process for 1.3 GHz cavities has been extensively studied earlier. In this work, a parametric study on EP of low-β (0.61) 650 MHz Nb SRF cavities (LB650), which will be used in pre-production cryomodule for proton improvement plan-II (PIP-II) linear accelerator, was conducted to determine adequate EP conditions for attaining a smooth surface of the cavities. EP performed with the standard parameters and an initial cathode (cathode-I) having a cathode surface area of ~5% of the cavity surface area yielded a rough equator surface of the cavity. The grain step height on the equator weld position was measured to be ~ 32 μm. The rough surface was attributed to preferential grain etching confirmed by a polarization curve showing a linear relationship between the EP current and voltage and the absence of the current plateau region. The cathode was modified to make its surface area twice that of cathode-I. The modified cathode (cathode-M) provided a current plateau region in the corresponding I-V curves measured at different cavity temperatures. The onset voltage for the plateau was found to be higher at higher cavity temperatures. Here this study revealed that even with cathode-M, the standard 18 V was low for EP of such large-sized cavities when the cavity temperature was 18 °C. EP performed at a higher voltage of 22–24.5 V with cathode-M yielded a smooth surface with a grain step height of only 0.6 μm. The applied EP conditions also improved removal uniformity along the cavity length. In contrast to the cavity treated with cathode-I, the cavities treated with cathode-M achieved a significantly higher accelerating gradient (E acc ) in vertical tests conducted in a cryostat at 2 K. The modified EP was found efficient to produce the cavities that achieved E acc of 22.4 MV/m, required by PIP II project in the baseline RF tests, to qualify for further surface processing used to enhance their quality factors.

Trickier than It Looks: Isomerization between Five- and Six-Coordinated Zinc in Heterometallic Li 2 Zn 2 Molecule

This report describes the synthesis and characterization of two hetero bi metallic Li–Zn coordination isomers [Li 2 Zn 2 (tbaoac) 6 ] (tbaoac = tert -butyl acetoacetato) that have been isolated separately by the same stoichiometric reaction run in different organic solvents. The 6-coordinated zinc isomer ( 6-Zn ) was synthesized in acetone with high yield, while the 5-coordinated one ( 5-Zn ) was readily obtained from ethanol. The 5-Zn isomer has a low solubility in organic solvents such as alkanes and haloalkanes, while its 6-Zn counterpart exhibits a good solubility in almost all common solvents. Two isomeric molecules feature similar centrosymmetric tetranuclear cyclic assemblies, which are different in their arrangement of tbaoac ligands. While all ligands act as μ 2 -type in the structure of 5-Zn , the two tbaoac groups chelating Li appear as μ 3 -type in 6-Zn , thus providing an additional coordination for Zn ions. However, the real structural transformation between these isomers was shown to be more complex than simply making or breaking a couple of Zn–O bonds. X-ray single-crystal structure analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, DART mass spectrometry, ICP-OES analysis, and TGA have been employed for the characterization of the isomers. The combination of powder X-ray diffraction and 1 H NMR investigation revealed that 6-Zn isomer can be quantitatively transformed to 5-Zn in ethanol, while the reverse conversion instantly takes place in acetone.

Atomic-Scale Dynamics of Five-Fold Twin Mediated Coalescence: Pathway-Dependent and Defect-Governed Nonclassical Growth Mechanisms

Defective crystals with distinct properties have been discovered in many systems. However, the growth mechanism of defective crystals is still poorly understood. Here, in this work, using a 5-fold twinned gold (Au) nanocrystal (NC) as a model system, three new coalescence pathways involving detwinning or twinning have been uncovered through atomic-scale dynamic observations in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope coupled with atomistic simulations. This demonstrates that beyond crystal size, coalescence growth dynamics involving 5-fold twins (5-FTs) are highly dependent on crystal defect density and the approach pathways of the crystals. When a 5-FT encounters a smaller 5-FT or a smaller NC in a face-to-face way, a new, larger 5-FT is produced at a relatively fast coalescence growth rate; while in a corner-to-corner way, the coalescence dynamics are more retarded and sluggish, which is conducive to the formation of complex multitwined structures rather than 5-FTs. This highlights that the planar defect density and crystal approach pathway influence the coalescence dynamics of crystals containing 5-FT. Moreover, a column-by-column grain boundary (GB) migration mechanism, which results in bent GBs, was also unveiled during the crystal coalescence process. These results enrich the general understanding of the crystal growth theory and provide new insights into the controllable fabrication of 5-FTs by crystal coalescence mechanisms.

Five-volt-class high-capacity all-solid-state lithium batteries

Advances in battery technology have been impeded by the voltage constraints of electrolytes. Here, in this study, we present a high-energy all-solid-state battery design featuring >5 V operation and an ultrahigh areal capacity of 35.3 mAh cm −2 ; these attributes were enabled by a highly conductive and ultrahigh-voltage stable fluoride solid electrolyte, LiCl–4Li 2 TiF 6 (1.7 × 10 −5 S cm −1 at 30 °C). LiCl–4Li 2 TiF 6 shields high-voltage spinel oxide cathodes, achieving 106 mAh g −1 at 2C with 75.2% retention over 500 cycles for LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , sharply contrasting with the conventional LiNbO 3 counterpart, which decomposes and fails to prevent detrimental interfacial degradation. The efficacy of LiCl–4Li 2 TiF 6 is validated across various systems, including LiCoMnO 4 , LiFe 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 and pouch-type LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 ||Li (or Ag–C) all-solid-state batteries, and further demonstrated by operability down to 2.3 V with 258 mAh g −1 and ultrathick 1.8-mm electrodes. This shielding layer with >5 V stability introduces a transformative design paradigm by revisiting the previously forbidden high-voltage cathodes.

Dynamics in a stellar convective layer and at its boundary: Comparison of five 3D hydrodynamics codes

Our ability to predict the structure and evolution of stars is in part limited by complex, 3D hydrodynamic processes such as convective boundary mixing. Hydrodynamic simulations help us understand the dynamics of stellar convection and convective boundaries. However, the codes used to compute such simulations are usually tested on extremely simple problems and the reliability and reproducibility of their predictions for turbulent flows is unclear. We define a test problem involving turbulent convection in a plane-parallel box, which leads to mass entrainment from, and internal-wave generation in, a stably stratified layer. We compare the outputs from the codes FLASH, MUSIC, PPMSTAR, PROMPI, and SLH, which have been widely employed to study hydrodynamic problems in stellar interiors. The convection is dominated by the largest scales that fit into the simulation box. All time-averaged profiles of velocity components, fluctuation amplitudes, and fluxes of enthalpy and kinetic energy are within ≲3σ of the mean of all simulations on a given grid (128 3 and 256 3 grid cells), where σ describes the statistical variation due to the flow’s time dependence. They also agree well with a 512 3 reference run. The 128 3 and 256 3 simulations agree within 9% and 4%, respectively, on the total mass entrained into the convective layer. The entrainment rate appears to be set by the amount of energy that can be converted to work in our setup and details of the small-scale flows in the boundary layer seem to be largely irrelevant. Our results lend credence to hydrodynamic simulations of flows in stellar interiors. We provide in electronic form all outputs of our simulations as well as all information needed to reproduce or extend our study.
