Concurrent Enhancement of Acetylene Uptake Capacity and Selectivity by Progressive Core Expansion and Extra–Framework Anions in Pore–Space–Partitioned Metal–Organic Frameworks

A multi-stage core-expansion method is proposed here as one component of the integrative binding-site/extender/core-expansion (BEC) strategy. The conceptual deconstruction of the partitioning ligand into three editable parts draws our focus onto progressive core expansion and allows the optimization of both acetylene uptake and selectivity. Herein the effectiveness of this strategy is shown through a family of eight cationic pore-partitioned materials containing three different partitioning ligands and various counter anions. The optimized structure, Co 3 -cpt-tph-Cl (Hcpt=4-(p-carboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole, H-tph=(2,5,8-tri-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4,6,7,9-hexaazaphenalene) with the largest surface area and highest C 2 H 2 uptake capacity (200 cm 3 /g at 298 K), also exhibits (desirably) the lowest CO 2 uptake and hence the highest C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity. The successful boost in both C 2 H 2 capacity and IAST selectivity allows Co 3 -cpt-tph-Cl to rank among the best crystalline porous materials, ionic MOFs in particular, for C 2 H 2 uptake and C 2 H 2 /CO 2 experimental breakthrough separation.

Splitting Mono- and Di-Branched Alkane Isomers by a Robust Aluminum-Based Metal-Organic Framework Material with Optimal Pore Dimensions

The separation of alkanes with different degrees of branching, particularly mono- and dibranched isomers, represents a challenging yet important industrial process for the production of premium gasoline blending components with high octane number. We report here the separation of linear/monobranched and dibranched alkanes through complete molecular sieving by a robust aluminum-based MOF material, Al-bttotb (H 3 bttotb = 4,4',4"-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(oxy))tribenzoicacid). Single- and multicomponent adsorption experiments reveal that the material adsorbs linear and monobranched alkanes, but fully excludes their dibranched isomers. Adsorption sites of alkanes within the MOF channels have been identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and the adsorption mechanism was explored through computational calculations and modeling. The highly selective adsorption of the MOF should be attributed to its optimal pore dimensions.

CFD-DEM Modeling of Autothermal Pyrolysis of Corn Stover with a Coupled Particle- and Reactor-Scale Framework

Autothermal operation of fast pyrolysis is an efficient process-intensification technique wherein exothermic oxidation reactions are used to overcome the heat-transfer bottleneck of conventional pyrolysis. The development of accurate, reliable modeling toolsets is imperative to generating a deeper understanding of biomass autothermal pyrolysis systems to support scale-up and industrial deployment. This modeling effort describes the development of single-particle and reactor models which incorporate detailed reaction schemes and simultaneous exothermic oxidation reactions. The particle-scale model was parameterized for corn stover feedstock with particle morphology, density, ash content, and biopolymer composition, all of which impact the emergent conversion characteristics during pyrolysis. Results were then used to parameterize a reactor-scale autothermal pyrolysis model, which was developed using a coarse-grained computational fluid dynamic-discrete element method. The simulation results compared well with experimental results, with the predicted bio-oil, light gas, and biochar yield within 3.0 wt% of the experimental yields. Further analyses were performed to test the influence of equivalence ratio, biomass injection position, and particle size distribution on autothermal pyrolysis. The analysis of the physio-chemical properties of the fluid and solid phase inside the reactor and at the reactor outlet help reveal important process interactions of autothermal pyrolysis.
