Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structures, Nonlinear Optical Properties, and Magnetic Properties of Two Thiophosphates: KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7

Two thiophosphates, KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 , were structurally characterized without investigating any optical properties. Herein in this work, KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 were revisited to investigate their optical and magnetic properties, respectively. Pure polycrystalline samples and crystals of KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 were grown by high temperature solid state reactions, where mm-sized crystals of KCrP 2 S 7 were collected. KCrP 2 S 7 is isostructural to KInP 2 S 7 , which features a layered structure. KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 possess close relationship to the layered thiophosphate M 2 P 2 S 6 (M = Fe, Co, Zn, etc.). The bonding pictures of KInP 2 S 7 were studied using the electron localization function (ELF) coupled with crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) calculations. The intrinsically distorted [PS 4 ] tetrahedra and [InS 6 ] octahedra are made by strong covalent P-S interactions and ionic In-S interactions, respectively. Electronic structure analysis confirmed that the optical properties of KInP 2 S 7 are mainly contributed to by [PS 4 ] tetrahedra together with small amounts of the contributions coming from [InS 6 ] octahedra. Magnetic measurement on mm-sized crystals of KCrP 2 S 7 verified that there is an antiferromagnetic transition around 21 K, and the Cr atoms are trivalent. KInP 2 S 7 is predicated to be an indirect bandgap semiconductor of 2.38 eV, which is confirmed by the UV-Vis measurement of 2.4(1) eV. KInP 2 S 7 is not a type-I phase-matching material and exhibits moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) response (0.51 × AgGaS 2 , sample of particle size of 100 µm). The laser damage threshold (LDT) of KInP 2 S 7 is very high of 5.2 × AgGaS 2 . Bandgap engineering were undergone to enhance the SHG response of KInP 2 S 7 .

Synthesis, structure, linear and nonlinear optical properties of noncentrosymmetric quaternary diamond-like semiconductors, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (CZGSe) and the novel Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7

In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 . The structures of both Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a reduced symmetry due to the cation ordering pattern, adopts the Cu 4 NiSi 2 S 7 structure type, with space group C2. The corner-sharing tetrahedra in Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 are slightly distorted because the charge for some of the S 2 - anions is not compensated by the first-nearest-neighbor cations. Rietveld refinements using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were used to assess the phase purity of the samples and confirm the bulk structural behavior. Diffuse reflectance UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy shows that Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 have direct optical bandgaps of 1.38 and 0.91 eV, respectively. Electronic structure calculations implementing density functional theory confirm the direct bandgap for Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a calculated value of 0.62 eV. Both compounds are air stable, thermally stable up to relatively high temperatures, undergo phase transitions and have wide windows of optical clarity. The Kurtz-Perry powder technique was used to determine the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses using a commercial AgGaSe 2 standard. While Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 displays a weak SHG response, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 exhibits a response that is greater than several benchmark materials, with a large SHG coefficient, χ (2) , of 43 ± 6 pm/V at λ = 2900 nm.

Analytic gradients for relativistic exact-two-component equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles method

A first implementation of analytic gradients for spinor-based relativistic equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles method using an exact two-component Hamiltonian augmented with atomic mean-field spin–orbit integrals is reported. To demonstrate its applicability, we present calculations of equilibrium structures and harmonic vibrational frequencies for the electronic ground and excited states of the radium mono-amide molecule (RaNH 2 ) and the radium mono-methoxide molecule (RaOCH 3 ). Spin–orbit coupling is shown to quench Jahn–Teller effects in the first excited state of RaOCH 3 , resulting in a C 3v equilibrium structure. Furthermore, the calculations also show that the radium atoms in these molecules serve as efficient optical cycling centers.

Electronic Structure and Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Uranium–Gold Clusters UAu n – , n = 3–7

A collaborative effort between experiment and theory towards elucidating the electronic and molecular structures of uranium-gold clusters is presented. Anion photoelectron spectra of UAu n – (n=3-7) were taken at third (355 nm) and fourth (266 nm) harmonics of a Nd:YAG laser, as well as excimer (ArF 193nm) photon energies, where the experimental adiabatic electron affinities (AEA) and vertical detachment energies (VDE) values were measured. Complementary first principles calculations were subsequently carried out to corroborate experimentally determined electron detachment energies and to determine the geometry and electronic structure for each cluster. Except for the ring-like neutral isomer of UAu 6 where one unpaired electron is spread over the Au atoms, all other neutral and anionic UAu n clusters (n = 3 - 7) were calculated to possess open-shell electrons with the unpaired electrons localized on the central U atom. The smaller clusters closely resemble the analogous UF n species, but significant deviations are seen starting with UAu 5 where a competition between U-Au and Au-Au bonding begins to become apparent. The UAu 6 system appears to mark a transition where Au-Au interactions begin to dominate, where both a ring-like and two heavily distorted octahedral structures around the central U atom are to be nearly isoenergetic. With UAu 7 , only ring-like structures are calculated. Altogether, the calculated electron detachment energies are in good agreement with the experimental values

Unexpected symmetry breaking in ferroelectric wurtzite thin films on silicon observed by optical second harmonic generation

Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) exists as a popular tool for probing materials with broken inversion symmetry in the physical and biological sciences. SHG polarimetry can reveal material anisotropy with high sensitivity, including point group and phase transitions. Here, we probe ferroelectric wurtzite films with a nominal 6 mm symmetry under a normal reflection geometry using SHG microscopy and discover an unexpected symmetry breaking. Symmetry considerations would normally forbid the detection of the SHG signal when light propagates along the polar 6-fold rotation axis. Yet a uniquely anisotropic SHG response is observed in this geometry in Al 1-x B x N, Al 1-x Sc x N, Zn 1-x Mg x O, and AlN/Al 1-x Sc x N heterostructures grown on silicon that can be modeled by an average monoclinic symmetry of point group m. A significant enhancement of the SHG signal corresponding to up to a 5.3× increase in the SHG intensity (hence ∼2.3 × in effective SHG tensor coefficient) is observed at antiparallel polar domain walls, suggesting local cooperative alignment of symmetry-breaking structural distortions. Namely, it is found that the monoclinic mirror plane is oriented predominantly perpendicular to the walls. Such increases in domain wall SHG thus reveal that subtle symmetry breaking can be a pathway to large property enhancements.

Crystal mechanics-based thermo-elastic constitutive modeling of orthorhombic uranium using generalized spherical harmonics and first-order bounding theories

In earlier works, a mathematical procedure for invertible microstructure-property linkages was developed using computationally efficient spectral methods for polycrystalline cubic and hexagonal metals. This paper formulates such invertible microstructure–property linkages for orthorhombic polycrystalline metals relying on the generalized spherical harmonics (GSH) spectral basis. The procedure is used to compute property closures of orthorhombic polycrystals. The closures represent the complete set of theoretically possible combinations of effective properties for a selected material. The procedure relies on the first-order bounding theories and considers orientation distribution functions (ODFs) as the main microstructural descriptor influencing homogenized properties. Numerous examples of these closures involving second-rank thermal expansion and fourth-rank elastic stiffness tensorial properties over a broad range of temperatures are presented for α-uranium (α-U). In doing so, certain key properties of these closures are exploited to facilitate their computation with drastically reduced computational effort. Along with the recently developed GSH-based interpolation procedure for ODFs from coarsely spaced experimental measurement grids to finely spaced finite element mesh resolution grids presented in Barrett et al., the developed computationally efficient ODF-effective property linkages are used to establish a crystal mechanics-based simulation framework coupled with the finite element method (FEM). The ODF dependent thermal expansion and elastic stiffness tensors are efficiently calculated at every integration point and used by the FEM to predict the overall distortion of a hemispherical part made of α-U during heating. In conclusion, it is shown that the developed framework can be used to simulate microstructurally heterogeneous components under thermo-mechanical loadings in a computationally efficient manner.

Concurrent multi-peak Bragg coherent x-ray diffraction imaging of 3D nanocrystal lattice displacement via global optimization

Abstract In this paper we demonstrated a method to reconstruct vector-valued lattice distortion fields within nanoscale crystals by optimization of a forward model of multi-reflection Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (MR-BCDI) data. The method flexibly accounts for geometric factors that arise when making BCDI measurements, is amenable to efficient inversion with modern optimization toolkits, and allows for globally constraining a single image reconstruction to multiple Bragg peak measurements. This is enabled by a forward model that emulates the multiple Bragg peaks of a MR-BCDI experiment from a single estimate of the 3D crystal sample. We present this forward model, we implement it within the stochastic gradient descent optimization framework, and we demonstrate it with simulated and experimental data of nanocrystals with inhomogeneous internal lattice displacement. We find that utilizing a global optimization approach to MR-BCDI affords a reliable path to convergence of data which is otherwise challenging to reconstruct.
