Technology Development of a Biowaste Resistojet, Volume 2

The thruster development effort of the biowaste resistojet program is reported. Under this program, several variations of the concentric tube resistojet were built and tested. Because of the corrosive nature of the biowaste gases available for propellants, thruster effort was concentrated on the use of noble metals (platinum and its alloys) for the critical center tube heating element. This tube must operate at high temperatures. Initially the biowaste gases were projected to be CO2, CH4, H2O or H2 with only very small amounts of O2 or N2. However, during 1971, results from experimental life support tests indicated that the oxygen content would probably be in the range from 0.5 to 1.0%. To achieve the desired high specific impulses, metal temperatures as high as 1700 K (3060 R) were considered desirable goals. The first thruster, designated Mark 1, employed the alloy platinum-rhodium for the center tube. Although this material was oxidation resistant and had high strength relative to pure platinum, experimental materials tests showed that this alloy suffered from carbonyl reactions when tested on pure CO2. These reactions resulted in a depletion of rhodium and significantly weakened the tubes. The next series of thrusters were designated Mark 2 and employed platinum-iridium for the center tubes.

Experimental performance of an internal resistance heater for Langley 6-inch expansion tube driver

An experimental investigation of the heating characteristics of an internal resistance heating element was conducted in the driver of the Langley 6-inch expansion tube to obtain actual operating conditions, to compare these results to theory, and to determine whether any modification need be made to the heater element. The heater was operated in pressurized helium from 138. MN/sq m to 62.1 MN/sq m. This investigation revealed large temperature variations within the heater element caused primarily by area reductions at insulator locations. These large temperature variations were reduced by welding small tabs over all grooves. Previous predictions of heater element and driver gas temperature were unacceptable so new equations were derived. These equations predict element and gas temperature within 10 percent of the test data when either the constant power cycle or the interrupted power cycle is used. Visual observation of the heater element, when exposed to the atmosphere with power on, resulted in a decision to limit the heater element to 815 K. Experimental shock Mach numbers are in good agreement with theory.

Magnetocaloric pump

A vessel having inlet and outlet valves is disposed in a container with a fluid to be pumped which may be evolved from a liquid in the container below the vessel. A magnetocaloric substance is disposed in the vessel and causes fluid vapor in the vessel to expand and be expelled through the outlet valve. Vapor is drawn in through the inlet valve as the substance cools. The inlet valves may be one-way check valves or may be solenoid valves energized at appropriate times by timing circutis. A timer controlled heating element may also be disposed in the vessel to operate in conjunction with the magnetic field.

Smoke generator

A smoke generator is disclosed which is particularly suitable for mounting on the wing tips of an aircraft and for conducting airflow studies. The device includes a network of thermally insulated tubes for carrying a fluid which is used to produce smoke. The fluid, which need not be combustible, is heated above its vaporization temperature by electric current which is passed through the fluid conduit tubes, so that the tubes serve both as fluid conduits and resistance heating elements. Fluid supply and monitoring systems and electrical control systems are also disclosed.

Temperature stabilization of microwave ferrite devices

Thin-film heating element for strip-line circulator is sandwiched between insulation and copper laminations. Disks conform to shape of circulator ferrite disks and are installed between copper-clad epoxy ground planes. Heater design eliminates external cartridges and reduces weight by approximately one-third.

Passive thermosyphon solar heating and cooling module with supplementary heating

A collection of three quarterly reports from Sigma Research, Inc., covering progress and status from January through September 1977 are presented. Three heat exchangers are developed for use in a solar heating and cooling system for installation into single-family dwellings. Each exchanger consists of one heating and cooling module and one submerged electric water heating element.

Uniform distortion of a heated turbulent wake

Digital sampling and processing techniques are used to assess the effect of a uniform and constant strain rate on a slightly heated cylinder-generated wake which had undergone a prestrain development distance of 115 cylinder diameters. The wake is generated by a circular heating element (6.6-mm-diam cylinder) mounted horizontally in the center of a low-speed open return wind tunnel. The strain field is produced by a distortion duct oriented in such a way as to accentuate any periodic interface structure which might be present in the undistorted wake. Interface statistics are presented for both the undistorted (near) wake and the uniformly strained wake, and conditional (point) averages of the streamwise velocity and passive temperature fields of the strained wake. The results suggest that the interface thickness is fairly uniform along the back but decreases along the front with distance from the wake center.

Operational tests of a solar-energy system in Georgia

Seventy three page report describes one year performance of commercial solar-energy hot-water system. Silicone oil is heat-exchange fluid in tested system, designed to meet needs of family of four. Roll-bend heat exchanger is wrapped around hot-water storage tank. Oil circulates through exchanger and flat-plat solar collectors. Auxiliary energy, to maintain temperature in storage tank, is supplied by 4,500-watt resistance-heating element.

The potential of carbon fiber induced shock hazards in household toasters

The average exposure to carbon fibers which produced a short and potential shock hazard in a household toaster was determined. Toasters are normally in the off state. They are used for brief periods during the day and have timed cycles during which power is applied. The possibility of a short occurring from the heating element to the case was investigated to find the exposure levels at which a potential shock hazard could appear. The short produced was tested to determine its importance.

Resistance Heater Helps Stirling-Engine Research

Stirling engine heater head consists of 18 double-turn coils of tubing, each of which is tightly wrapped with resistance-heating element, through which working gas flows. Coils form a toroid about periphery of heater-head body. With new resistance heater, total circuit resistance can be selected independently of tube geometry by changing size of wires and/or number of wire wraps around each tube.

Food packing optimization

The development of a universal closure lid for the space shuttle food package is reported. The revised lid needs a folded configuration which, when unfolded, fully conforms to the interior surfaces of the food cup. Experimental thermoform molds were fabricated and test lids formed. The lid material not in contact with the food conformed to the cup interior without wrinkles, permitting full nesting of the cups. The final lid design was established and thermoform tooling designed and fabricated. Lids formed on these molds were tested for strength. The heating elements were replaced and repositioned to eliminate any hot spots which may cause warpage.

Hollow cathode startup using a microplasma discharge

Attention is given to a microplasma discharge to initiate a hollow cathode discharge for such applications as plasma flow experiments, the electric propulsion of space vehicles, and as a replacement for filament cathodes in neutral beam injector ion sources. The technique results in a cathode that is easy to start, simple in design, and which does not require external RF exciters, inserts or heating elements. Future applications may include ion beam milling and ion implantation.
