Generalized Optimization of High-Capacity Compressive Imaging Systems

One of the greatest challenges in applying compressive sensing (CS) signal processing techniques to electromagnetic imaging applications is designing a sensing matrix that has good reconstruction capabilities. Compressive reflector antennas (CRAs) are a class of antennas that have been shown to provide enhanced image reconstruction performance over traditional reflector antennas (TRAs) when CS techniques are employed. In this article, we present a unified CRA design method, which considers both the sensing capacity and efficiency of the antenna and can be used for both compressive imaging and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication applications. The unified design method is assessed for a CRA configuration in which dielectric scatterers are added to the surface of a TRA. The design results demonstrate the ability of the unified design method to enhance the CS reconstruction capabilities of the CRA.

The multifunctional use of an aqueous battery for a high capacity jellyfish robot

The batteries that power untethered underwater vehicles (UUVs) serve a single purpose: to provide energy to electronics and motors; the more energy required, the bigger the robot must be to accommodate space for more energy storage. By choosing batteries composed primarily of liquid media [e.g., redox flow batteries (RFBs)], the increased weight can be better distributed for improved capacity with reduced inertial moment. Here, we formed an RFB into the shape of a jellyfish, using two redox chemistries and architectures: (i) a secondary ZnBr 2 battery and (ii) a hybrid primary/secondary ZnI 2 battery. A UUV was able to be powered solely by RFBs with increased volumetric (Q~ 11 ampere-hours per liter) and areal (108 milliampere-hours per square centimeter) energy density, resulting in a long operational lifetime (T~ 1.5 hours) for UUVs composed of primarily electrochemically energy-dense liquid (~90% of the robot’s weight).

Perspective—Potential Benefit of Li-Rich Cathode Materials: Reduction of Co and Ni Content Rather than Achievement of Ultra-High Capacities

In the conventional cycling protocol for lithium and manganese rich NMC layered oxides (LMRNMC), the upper cutoff voltage V cut is extended to ~ 4.8, to achieve capacities of similar to 250 mAh g -1 . With this mode of operation, structural rearrangements result in voltage fade upon cycling. Herein, a strategy is proposed to avoid these structural rearrangements based on (a) restricting V cut to values < ~ 4.6 to shut down the bulk instabilities, and (b) application of a (preferably) semi-coherent coating that protects the surface oxygen. The potential benefit of this strategy would be to minimize Co and Ni content, compared to Ni-rich NMC.

Multifunctional, Self-Healing Polyelectrolyte Gels for Long-Cycle-Life, High-Capacity Sulfur Cathodes in Li-S Batteries (FY2020 Final Report)

The project aims to develop polyelectrolyte gels consisting of partially crosslinked ionomer, interpenetrated with self-healing/polysulfide-trapping chains and swelled with a mixture of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) and lithium salt. To our knowledge, no other sulfur-based cathode design has combined self-healing behavior, polysulfide containment, and lithium dendrite suppression into a single design. We have demonstrated the benefits of multifunctional ionomer gel polyelectrolytes / gel cathodes with self-healing properties, as well as chemical modification of mesoporous carbons for S/C composite cathodes. Success of the proposed program of study would have wide ranging impact on the electric vehicle industry and society as a whole. A Li-S battery system with the capability of doubling lithium-ion energy density would enable the production of lighter, longer range electric vehicles at a cost that is affordable to the average U.S. household. The availability of such vehicles should lead to wide-ranging adoption over the coming years which, in combination with increased renewable electricity generation, will drastically decrease carbon emissions across the country and reduce U.S. dependency on fossil fuel sources.

High capacity organic radical mediated phosphorous anode for redox flow batteries

A battery includes a redox flow anode chamber coupled to an anode current collector, a separator, and an external container in fluid connection with the redox flow anode chamber. The external container has therein a solid phosphorus material. A first redox-active mediator and the second redox-active mediator are circulated through the half-cell electrode chamber and the external container. During a charging cycle the first redox-active mediator is reduced at the current collector electrode and the reduced first mediator reduces the phosphorus material, and wherein during a discharging cycle the second redox-active mediator is oxidized at the anode current collector electrode, and the second redox-active mediator is then reduced by the reduced phosphorus material. A method of operating a battery and a method of making a battery are also discussed.
