Spin Polarizations in a Covariant Angular-Momentum-Conserved Chiral Transport Model

Using a covariant and angular-momentum-conserved chiral transport model, which takes into account the spin-orbit interactions of chiral fermions in their scatterings via the side jumps, we study the quark spin polarization in quark matter. For a system of rotating and unpolarized massless quarks in an expanding box, we find that side jumps can dynamically polarize the quark spin and result in a final quark spin polarization consistent with that of thermally equilibrated massless quarks in a self-consistent vorticity field. Further, for the quark matter produced in noncentral relativistic heavy ion collisions, we find that in the medium rest frame both the quark local spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane and along the longitudinal beam direction show an azimuthal angle dependence in the transverse plane similar to those observed in experiments for the Lambda hyperon.

Probing the Incompressibility of Nuclear Matter at Ultrahigh Density through the Prompt Collapse of Asymmetric Neutron Star Binaries

Using 250 neutron star merger simulations with microphysics, we explore for the first time the role of nuclear incompressibility in the prompt collapse threshold for binaries with different mass ratios. We demonstrate that observations of prompt collapse thresholds, either from binaries with two different mass ratios or with one mass ratio but combined with the knowledge of the maximum neutron star mass or compactness, will constrain the incompressibility at the maximum neutron star density K max to within tens of percent. This otherwise inaccessible measure of K max can potentially reveal the presence of hyperons or quarks inside neutron stars.

Determination of the Σ + Timelike Electromagnetic Form Factors

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the process e + e − → Σ + Σ ¯ − is studied at center-of-mass energies s = 2.3960 , 2.6454, and 2.9000 GeV. Using a fully differential angular description of the final state particles, both the relative magnitude and phase information of the Σ + electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region are extracted. The relative phase between the electric and magnetic form factors is determined to be sin Δ Φ = − 0.67 ± 0.29 ( stat ) ± 0.18 ( syst ) at s = 2.3960 GeV , Δ Φ = 55 ° ± 19 ° ( stat ) ± 14 ° ( syst ) at s = 2.6454 GeV , and 78 ° ± 22 ° ( stat ) ± 9 ° ( syst ) at s = 2.9000 GeV . For the first time, the phase of the hyperon electromagnetic form factors is explored in a wide range of four-momentum transfer. The evolution of the phase along with four-momentum transfer is an important input for understanding its asymptotic behavior and the dynamics of baryons. First Study of Antihyperon-Nucleon Scattering Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p and Measurement of Λ p → Λ p Cross Section

Using ( 10.087 ± 0.044 ) × 10 9 J / ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, the processes Λ p → Λ p and Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p are studied, where the Λ / Λ ¯ baryons are produced in the process J / ψ → Λ Λ ¯ and the protons are the hydrogen nuclei in the cooling oil of the beam pipe. Clear signals are observed for the two reactions. The cross sections in − 0.9 ≤ cos θ Λ / Λ ¯ ≤ 0.9 are measured to be σ ( Λ p → Λ p ) = ( 12.2 ± 1.6 stat ± 1.1 syst ) and σ ( Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p ) = ( 17.5 ± 2.1 stat ± 1.6 syst ) mb at the Λ / Λ ¯ momentum of 1.074 GeV / c within a range of ± 0.017 GeV / c , where the θ Λ / Λ ¯ are the scattering angles of the Λ / Λ ¯ in the Λ p / Λ ¯ p rest frames. Furthermore, the differential cross sections of the two reactions are also measured, where there is a slight tendency of forward scattering for Λ p → Λ p , and a strong forward peak for Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p . We present an approach to extract the total elastic cross sections by extrapolation. The study of Λ ¯ p → Λ ¯ p represents the first study of antihyperon-nucleon scattering, and these new measurements will serve as important inputs for the theoretical understanding of the (anti)hyperon-nucleon interaction. Probing quantum entanglement with generalized parton distributions at the Electron-Ion Collider

Within the collinear factorization framework based on generalized parton distributions, we calculate the spin density matrix of exclusively produced quark and antiquark pairs $𝑢\bar{𝑢}$, $𝑑⁢\bar{d}$, $𝑠⁢\bar{𝑠}$, $𝑐\bar{⁢𝑐}$, $𝑏\bar{𝑏}$ in electron-proton scattering. The presence of both real and imaginary parts in the scattering amplitudes leads to a rich pattern of entanglement between the quark and the antiquark. We map out kinematical regions where the pairs exhibit entanglement, Bell nonlocality, and nonstabilizerness. We also predict that massive quarks and antiquarks are transversely polarized, similar to the well-known transverse hyperon polarization in unpolarized collisions. In strangeness, charm, and bottom productions, the polarization can reach 50%–80% in certain kinematic regions in the low-energy runs of the Electron-Ion Collider.

Towards the understanding of the genuine three-body interaction for p–p–p and p–p–Λ

Three-body nuclear forces play an important role in the structure of nuclei and hypernuclei and are also incorporated in models to describe the dynamics of dense baryonic matter, such as in neutron stars. So far, only indirect measurements anchored to the binding energies of nuclei can be used to constrain the three-nucleon force, and if hyperons are considered, the scarce data on hypernuclei impose only weak constraints on the three-body forces. In this work, we present the first direct measurement of the p–p–p and p–p–Λ systems in terms of three-particle correlation functions carried out for pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV. Three-particle cumulants are extracted from the correlation functions by applying the Kubo formalism, where the three-particle interaction contribution to these correlations can be isolated after subtracting the known two-body interaction terms. A negative cumulant is found for the p–p–p system, hinting to the presence of a residual three-body effect while for p–p–Λ the cumulant is consistent with zero. This measurement demonstrates the accessibility of three-baryon correlations at the LHC.

Measurement of Λ(1520) production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$_ {NN}$ = 5.02

The production of the Λ(1520) baryonic resonance has been measured at midrapidity in inelastic pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV and in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$_ {NN}$=5.02 TeV for non-single diffractive events and in multiplicity classes. The resonance is reconstructed through its hadronic decay channel Λ(1520) →pK - and the charge conjugate with the ALICE detector. The integrated yields and mean transverse momenta are calculated from the measured transverse momentum distributions in pp and p–Pb collisions. The mean transverse momenta follow mass ordering as previously observed for other hyperons in the same collision systems. A Blast-Wave function constrained by other light hadrons (π, K, K$^0_S$, p, Λ) describes the shape of the Λ(1520) transverse momentum distribution up to 3.5 GeV/c in p–Pb collisions. In the framework of this model, this observation suggests that the Λ(1520) resonance participates in the same collective radial flow as other light hadrons. The ratio of the yield of Λ(1520) to the yield of the ground state particle Λ remains constant as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, suggesting that there is no net effect of the hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions on the Λ(1520) yield.

Measurements of ${\Xi }{^-}$ and $\overline{\Xi }{^+}$ production in proton–proton interactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 17.3 $\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}$ in the NA61/SHINE experiment

The production of $\Xi (1321)^{-}$ and $\overline{\Xi }(1321)^{+}$ hyperons in inelastic $p+p$ interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 $\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$. Double differential distributions in rapidity ${y}$ and transverse momentum $p_{T}$ are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both ${\Xi }{^-}$ and $\overline{\Xi }{^+} $. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The ${\Xi }{^-} $ mean multiplicity in inelastic $p+p$ interactions at 158 $\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$ is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

$\mathrm {K_S}^{0}$- and (anti-)$\Lambda $-hadron correlations in $pp$ collisions at ${\sqrt{s}} = 13$ TeV

Two-particle Azimuthal correlations are measured with the ALICE apparatus in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV to explore strangeness- and multiplicity-related effects in the fragmentation of jets and the transition regime between bulk and hard production, probed with the condition that a strange meson (KS o ) or baryon (Λ) with transverse momentum p T > 3 GeV/c is produced. Azimuthal correlations between kaons or Λ hyperons with other hadrons are presented at midrapidity for a broad range of the trigger (3 < $p$$^{trigg}_{T}$ < 20 GeV/c) and associated particle p T (1 GeV/c < $p$$^{assoc}_{T}$< $p$$^{trigg}_{T}$), for minimum-bias events and as a function of the event multiplicity. The near- and away-side peak yields are compared for the case of either K S o or Λ(Λ¯) being the trigger particle with that of inclusive hadrons (a sample dominated by pions). In addition, the measurements are compared with predictions from PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC event generators.

The hypernuclear physics program at Jefferson Lab

Missing mass spectroscopy of Λ hypernuclei using the (e, e' K⁺) re action has been performed in the past at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) by several experiments in Halls A and C. A new experimen tal campaign is expected to start running in 2026 in Hall C and to provide the first study of the isospin dependence in medium-mass hyperisotopes by populating $^{40}_Λ{K}$ and $^{48}_Λ{K}$ using isotopically enriched calcium targets [E12-15-008]. During this cam paign, it will be possible to study Λ interactions in nuclear matter using a lead target [E12-20-013]. Solid-state targets made of lithium, beryllium, boron [LOI12-23-013], and aluminum [LOI12-23-016] are considered to be included in the campaign. The use of the HKS and HES spectrometers together with thin target foils and high beam currents leads to a sub-MeV energy resolution, significantly better than in hadron beam experiments. Valuable information on few-body hyperon systems would be gained if helium targets were used [E12-19-002]. Using an additional spectrometer for measuring the decay-pion spectra could give access to the binding energies of light hyperfragments [LOI12-23-011]. The measurement of precise and accurate en ergy spectra of different hyperisotopes probes the Λ-N interaction in nuclei including the Λ-N-N interaction. The latter is assumed to play a key role for the stiffness of the nuclear equation of state relevant for the stability of neutron stars.

Cross Section Evaluation for Exclusive Channels of K+Λ and K+Σ0 Electroproduction off Protons Using CLAS Detector Data

In this work, a method for evaluating the cross sections of electroproduction of K+Λ0 and K+Σ0 off protons in the region of invariant masses of final hadrons MK + MY <W < 2.65 GeV (MK and MY being the masses of the kaon and hyperon, respectively) and squares of four-momentum transfers of virtual photons, i.e., photon virtualities 0 < Q2 < 5 GeV2, is developed based on experimental data of these exclusive channels’ cross sections measured by the CLAS detector in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. A set of algorithms has been implemented to evaluate the differential cross sections of these channels, along with their statistical and systematic uncertainties. A program was developed for the evaluation of differential cross sections and structure functions using C++ and Python libraries. An interactive website was created for working with the program, enabling the analysis of one-dimensional and two-dimensional dependences of structure functions and differential cross sections. The evaluation of differential cross sections for the K+Λ and K+Σ0 electroproduction channels is necessary for extracting the structure function σLT from the data on the polarization asymmetry of electroproduction reactions of these final states with longitudinally polarized electrons. The obtained results are also important for the development of realistic Monte Carlo event generators in planning future experiments and for evaluating the efficiency of detecting final particles when extracting reaction cross sections from experimental data.

Collective Excitation in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions—In Memory of Professor Lianshou Liu

We celebrate the legacies of our friend and mentor Professor Lianshou Liu who was one of the pioneers for the phenomenology of multi-particle interactions and initiated the physics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions in China. In this article, we discuss some of the recent exciting experimental observations on the collective phenomena including collectivity, chirality, criticality, strangeness production, and thermal equilibrium in high-energy nuclear collisions. Future directions, especially the physics at high baryon density, will be discussed with a focus on the first-order phase boundary and hyperon–nucleon interactions.

Core States of Neutron Stars from Anatomizing Their Scaled Structure Equations

Given an Equation of State (EOS) for neutron star (NS) matter, there is a unique mass–radius sequence characterized by a maximum mass ${M}_{\mathrm{NS}}^{\max}$ at radius $R$ max . We first show analytically that the ${M}_{\mathrm{NS}}^{\max}$ and $R$ max scale linearly with two different combinations of the NS central pressure $P$ $c$ and energy density $ε$ $c$ , by dissecting perturbatively the dimensionless Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff (TOV) equations governing NS internal variables. The scaling relations are then verified via 87 widely used and rather diverse phenomenological as well as 17 microscopic NS EOSs with/without considering hadron–quark phase transitions and hyperons, by solving numerically the original TOV equations. The EOS of the densest NS matter allowed before it collapses into a black hole is then obtained. Using the universal ${M}_{\mathrm{NS}}^{\max}$ and $R$ max scalings and Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer and XMM-Newton mass–radius observational data for PSR J0740+6620, a very narrow constraining band on the NS central EOS is extracted directly from the data for the first time, without using any specific input EOS model.

Occurrence of Gravitational Collapse in the Accreting Neutron Stars of Binary-driven Hypernovae

The binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) model proposes long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate in binaries composed of a carbon–oxygen (CO) star and a neutron star (NS) companion. The CO core collapse generates a newborn NS and a supernova that triggers the GRB by accreting onto the NSs, rapidly transferring mass and angular momentum to them. This article aims to determine the conditions under which a black hole (BH) forms from NS collapse induced by the accretion and the impact on the GRB's observational properties and taxonomy. We perform three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of BdHNe using up-to-date NS nuclear equations of state, with and without hyperons, and calculate the structure evolution in full general relativity. We assess the binary parameters leading either NS in the binary to the critical mass for gravitational collapse into a BH and its occurrence time, t col . We include a nonzero angular momentum of the NSs and find that t col ranges from a few tens of seconds to hours for decreasing NS initial angular momentum values. BdHNe I are the most compact (about 5 minute orbital period), promptly form a BH, and release ≳10 52 erg of energy. They form NS–BH binaries with tens of kiloyears merger timescales by gravitational-wave emission. BdHNe II and III do not form BHs, and release ~10 50 –10 52 erg and ≲10 50 erg of energy, respectively. They form NS–NS binaries with a range of merger timescales larger than for NS–BH binaries. In some compact BdHNe II, either NS can become supramassive, i.e., above the critical mass of a nonrotating NS. Magnetic braking by a 10 13 G field can delay BH formation, leading to BH–BH or NS–BH with tens of kiloyears merger timescales.

Extracting the \(\Lambda \) Polarizing Fragmentation Function from Belle e + e − Data within the TMD Formalism

Data from the Belle Collaboration for associated production (with a light unpolarized hadron) and single-inclusive production of transversely polarized Λ-hyperons in e + e − annihilation processes allowed to extract within a TMD approach, for the first time, the Λ polarizing fragmentation function. Recent theoretical developments on the computation of cross sections for single-inclusive hadron production in e + e − annihilation processes, within a Soft Collinear Effective Theory approach, combined with the CSS formalism for the double-hadron production case, can be used to perform a renewed analysis, adopting a full TMD factorization scheme. Preliminary results and a comparison between the two analyses are presented.
