Variationally consistent Maxwell stress in flexoelectric structures under finite deformation and immersed in free space

Maxwell stress refers to the mechanical stress exerted on a dielectric material due to the presence of electric fields. It plays a significant role in the interaction between a dielectric material and the surrounding free space under finite deformation. Previous research on finite deformation of flexoelectricity mainly adopted a modified form of Maxwell stress, potentially not able to correctly capture some physical phenomena, such as the compression of a dielectric droplet in an electric field. In this work, we propose a consistent and complete variational principle for flexoelectricity, in which the Maxwell stress emerges naturally from the derivation, without introducing additional assumptions. An Isogeometric analysis-based numerical framework is developed accordingly and verified by both linear and nonlinear benchmark cases compared with experimental results. The present framework successfully captures and quantifies the behaviors of conductive liquids and soft dielectric solids subjected to an external electric field. Finally, a novel scenario is investigated in which a flexoelectric beam immersed in free space is analyzed, showing the interesting distribution of Maxwell stress-induced tractions at opposing boundaries. The test demonstrates that a higher dielectric constant can effectively enhance the material's stiffness in response to the external electric loading.

Tuning the surface energy of fluorinated diamond-like carbon coatings via plasma immersion ion implantation plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane

Here, we demonstrate an environmentally friendly and scalable method to create fluorine-doped diamond-like carbon (F-DLC) coatings using plasma immersion ion implantation plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PIII-PECVD) with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. F-DLC films tend to have low wettability and good mechanical flexibility, which make them suitable for applications in biomedical devices and antibiofouling surfaces. We report on the effects of fluorine incorporation on the surface chemistry, surface energy, and morphology of these coatings, showing that our method is effective in increasing the fluorine content in the F-DLC up to 40%. We show that the addition of fluorine leads to a decrease in surface energy, which is consistent with a reduction in surface wettability.

Electrolyte Immersion Increases Photoconductivity in a Model Polymer Photocathode

Immersing polymer solar cells in aqueous electrolyte for photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production is likely to cause photophysical changes that could present both challenges and opportunities for engineering functional and durable devices. Herein we study the bulk heterojunction blend poly(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl)-alt-(2-(((2-ethylhexyl)oxy)carbonyl)-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-4,6-diyl):poly(N,N'-di(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-alt-(2,2-bithiophene-5,5'-diyl) (PTB7-Th:N2200) excited-state dynamics in electrolyte from femtosecond to millisecond time scales using pump-probe microwave conductivity and absorption spectroscopy. While the blend swells very little, electrolyte exposure increases the microwave-frequency mobility and possibly the yield of photogenerated charges while also decreasing crystallinity. These results indicate an enhancement in key performance metrics, implying that any limitations on the performance of PEC test devices do not arise from active layer-electrolyte interactions. For the PTB7-Th:N2200 blend or similar photocathode systems, our results indicate that improving the interfacial kinetics and/or the carrier lifetime should be prioritized, not protecting the active layer from the electrolyte. Since this observation may not be universal to all polymer systems, future research should focus on identifying their limiting photophysical processes. electrolyte.

MetaPoL: Immersive VR based Indoor Patterns of Life (PoL) and Anomalies Data Generation for Insider Threat Modeling in Nuclear Security

Insider threats are perhaps the most serious challenges that nuclear and radiological security systems face. Insiders pose such a great threat due to their access, authority, and knowledge, granting them opportunities to bypass dedicated nuclear and radiological security elements. For example, in one of the latest major insider threat incidents to nuclear security, the Doel-4 nuclear powerplant in Belgium suffered a shutdown, the threat of nuclear materials diversion, and long-term loss of tens of millions of dollars. Seven years of investigation concluded that it was an inside job and attempted sabotage. In this regard, there is an immediate need for R&D and technology integration in the domain of modeling indoor Patterns-of-Life (PoL) and anomaly detection. This can be achieved by using datasets of facility users’ mobility and activity, which can support the design of algorithms for insider threat modeling and detection. However, due to classification, privacy, sensitivity, and safety protocols, such datasets from real physical nuclear reactor facilities are not only hard to share, but also not always feasible to deploy and collect. Aiming to find an alternate solution, our proposed demonstration work - MetaPoL, is the first-ever (for the application space) immersive VR (virtual reality) environment of a real-world secure facility and allows users to move-and-stay through the designed indoor physical layout and also encounter NPCs (non-player characters) that emulate other facility users. In the MetaPoL an interactive user performs realistic spatio-temporal movement, dwelling and activities using a Meta Quest Pro VR headset, and that generates high-frequency (in time) high-resolution (in space) indoor spatial-temporal datasets that are valuable for PoL modeling and anomaly detection research specifically for insider threat modeling and detection mission. Such generated realistic, rich in context, and mission specific datasets can boost AI/Machine Learning based research for modeling and detecting insider threats in nuclear security and nonproliferation.

Next Generation Heat Transfer Fluids for Two-Phase Immersion Cooling of Data Centers

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of next generation dielectric fluids in a Two-Phase Immersion Cooling (2PIC) system, which was designed for use in data centers. Hence, this report contains the performance evaluations of a new developmental dielectric fluid, Opteon™ 2P50, in a commercially available small-scale 2PIC system under typical and off-design range of operating conditions. Accordingly, ambient temperature and thermal loads were varied to simulate different ambient conditions. Additionally, this research report describes the development of a semi-empirical lumped model to predict the energy efficiency of the 2PIC system using Opteon™ 2P50 across a wide range of conditions. The model aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the system’s efficiency and potential improvements. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute to the adoption of sustainable 2PIC cooling technologies in data centers.
