Uncovering obscured phonon dynamics from powder inelastic neutron scattering using machine learning

The study of phonon dynamics is pivotal for understanding material properties, yet it faces challenges due to the irreversible information loss inherent in powder inelastic neutron scattering spectra and the limitations of traditional analysis methods. In this study, we present a machine learning framework designed to reveal obscured phonon dynamics from powder spectra. Using a variational autoencoder, we obtain a disentangled latent representation of spectra and successfully extract force constants for reconstructing phonon dispersions. Notably, our model demonstrates effective applicability to experimental data even when trained exclusively on physics-based simulations. The fine-tuning with experimental spectra further mitigates issues arising from domain shift. Analysis of latent space underscores the model’s versatility and generalizability, affirming its suitability for complex system applications. Furthermore, our framework’s two-stage design is promising for developing a universal pre-trained feature extractor. This approach has the potential to revolutionize neutron measurements of phonon dynamics, offering researchers a potent tool to decipher intricate spectra and gain valuable insights into the intrinsic physics of materials.

Benchmarking universal machine learning interatomic potentials for rapid analysis of inelastic neutron scattering data

The accurate calculation of phonons and vibrational spectra remains a significant challenge, requiring highly precise evaluations of interatomic forces. Traditional methods based on the quantum description of the electronic structure, while widely used, are computationally expensive and demand substantial expertise. Emerging universal machine learning interatomic potentials (uMLIPs) offer a transformative alternative by employing pre-trained neural network surrogates to predict interatomic forces directly from atomic coordinates. This approach dramatically reduces computation time and minimizes the need for technical knowledge. In this paper, we produce a phonon database comprising nearly 5000 inorganic crystals to benchmark the performance of several leading uMLIPs. We further assess these models in real-world applications by using them to analyze experimental inelastic neutron scattering data collected on a variety of materials. Through detailed comparisons, we identify the strengths and limitations of these uMLIPs, providing insights into their accuracy and suitability for fast calculations of phonons and related properties, as well as the potential for real-time interpretation of neutron scattering spectra. Our findings highlight how the rapid advancement of AI in science is revolutionizing experimental research and data analysis.

Factorized QED and QCD contribution to deeply inelastic scattering

We present the first calculation of next-to-leading order (NLO) factorized QED and QCD contributions to the short-distance hard coefficients of inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in a joint QED and QCD factorization approach. Unlike the traditional radiative correction approach to handle the collision-induced QED contributions to DIS, QED radiation from all charged leptons and quarks are treated equally, and their collinear sensitivities are systematically factorized into corresponding universal lepton and parton distribution functions. We demonstrate that the NLO factorized short-distance QED contribution is completely infrared safe and calculable without the need of any parameters other than the standard factorization scale in the same way as the factorized short-distance QCD contribution. We discuss the potential impact of this joint factorization approach on the extraction of partonic information from lepton-hadron DIS.

Longitudinal spin transfer to Λ hyperons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the CLAS12 spectrometer

The polarization of Λ hyperons is preserved in the angular distribution of their decay products. This property allows one to study the spin structure of the Λ. In semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering where a high energy lepton interacts with a nucleon target and one or more hadrons and the scattered lepton are detected in the final state, the probability for a struck quark to impart the polarization of the lepton to the Λ may be measured. In particular, in electron-proton scattering this quantity may be related to the longitudinal light quark polarization of the Λ. Currently, limited experimental data cannot discriminate between different models of Λ spin structure. This work reports on the measurement of the longitudinal spin transfer 𝐷$^{Λ}_{𝐿⁢𝐿′}$ to the Λ using data taken by the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab with a 10.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. This measurement is the most precise to date, and, in comparison with theory predictions, it offers valuable insight into the relative dominance of current and target fragmentation in Λ production.

Emergence of pseudoresonance in high-intensity resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of neon atoms interacting with intense x-ray pulses generated using an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). We find that an unexpected peak emerges near the 𝐾⁢𝛼 line of Ne, which does not coincide with any physical resonances of neon ions. We perform theoretical calculations based on a quantum-state-resolved rate-equation approach with x-ray-induced processes including possible resonant excitations. Our dynamics simulations demonstrate that a sequence of multiple resonant photoabsorption events are involved and the interplay of those multiple resonances in combination with the relatively large spectral bandwidth of XFEL radiation leads to the emergent resonance-like structure at a position where no resonances exist. Our finding offers critical guidance for future applications of high-intensity RIXS at XFEL facilities.

Spin and orbital excitations through the metal-to-insulator transition in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 probed with high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Here, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements (ΔE=46meV) have been performed on Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 through the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). A magnetic excitation at 125 meV evolves continuously through the MIT, in agreement with recent Raman-scattering results, and provides further confirmation for an all-in all-out magnetic ground state. Asymmetry of this feature is likely a result of coupling between the electronic and the magnetic degrees of freedom. We also observe a broad continuum of interband excitations centered at 0.3 eV energy loss. This is indicative of significant hybridization between Os 5d and O 2p states and the concurrent itinerant nature of the system. In turn, this suggests a possible breakdown of the free-ion model for Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 .

Inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 – Clpyridine ) 4 ] BF 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3–Clpyridine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S = 1 spin chain material that shows no magnetic neutron Bragg peaks down to temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous work identified NBCT as being in the Haldane phase and near a quantum phase transition as a function of D/J to the large-D quantum paramagnet phase (QPM), where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering results are presented on partially deuterated, 11B-enriched NBCT polycrystalline samples in zero magnetic field and down to temperatures of 0.3 K. Comparison to density matrix renormalization group calculations yields D/J = 1.51 and a significant rhombic single-ion anisotropy E (E/D ≈ 0.03, E/J ≈ 0.05). Here, these D, J, and E values place NBCT in the large-D QPM phase but precipitously near a quantum phase transition to a long-range ordered phase.

Time-dependent approach to inelastic scattering spectroscopies in and away from equilibrium: Beyond perturbation theory

We propose a nonperturbative numerical approach to calculate the spectrum of a many-body Hamiltonian with time and momentum resolution by exactly recreating a scattering event using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Akin to an actual inelastic scattering experiment, we explicitly account for the incident and scattered particles (e.g., photons, neutrons, electrons, etc.) in the Hamiltonian and obtain the spectrum by measuring the energy and momentum lost by the particle after interacting with the sample. We illustrate the method by calculating the spin excitations of a Mott-insulating Hubbard chain after a sudden quench with the aid of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. Our formalism can be applied to different forms of spectroscopies, such as neutron and Compton scattering and electron-energy-loss spectroscopy, as an example.

Spin dynamics in NaFeAs and NaFe 0.53 Cu 0.47 As probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The parent compounds of iron-based superconductors are magnetically ordered bad metals, with superconductivity appearing near a putative magnetic quantum critical point. The presence of both Hubbard repulsion and Hund’s coupling leads to rich physics in these multiorbital systems, and motivated descriptions of magnetism in terms of itinerant electrons or localized spins. The NaFe 1–x Cu x As series consists of magnetically ordered bad metal (x = 0), superconducting (x ≈ 0.02) and magnetically ordered semiconducing/insulating (x ≈ 0.5) phases, providing a platform to investigate the connection between superconductivity, magnetism and electronic correlations. Here we use x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to study the valence state of Fe and spin dynamics in two NaFe 1–x Cu x As compounds (x = 0 and 0.47). We find that magnetism in both compounds arises from Fe 2+ atoms, and exhibits underdamped dispersive spin waves in their respective ordered states. The dispersion of spin excitations in NaFe 0.53 Cu 0.47 As is consistent with being quasi-one-dimensional. Compared to NaFeAs, the band top of spin waves in NaFe 0.53 Cu 0.47 As is slightly softened with significantly more spectral weight of the spin excitations. Here, our results indicate the spin dynamics in NaFe 0.53 Cu 0.47 As arise from localized magnetic moments and suggest the iron-based superconductors are proximate to a correlated insulating state with localized iron moments.

High-pressure inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 - Clpyradine ) 4 ] B F 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3-Clpyradine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S=1 spin-chain material that shows no long-range magnetic order down to thermometer temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous ambient pressure inelastic neutron scattering experiments identified NBCT to be in the large-D quantum paramagnetic phase of the D/J phase diagram, where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. In this work, we extend the previous experiments to a hydrostatic pressure of 0.9 GPa. By comparing to density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find D/J increases from 1.5 to 3.2 as pressure increases from 0 GPa to 0.9 GPa, which pushes the system further into the large-D phase.

Chern numbers of topological phonon band crossing determined with inelastic neutron scattering

Topological invariants in the band structure, such as Chern numbers, are important for the understanding and classification of the topological properties of matter and dictate the occurrence of exotic behaviors, yet their direct spectroscopic determination has been largely limited to electronic bands. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering in conjunction with ab initio calculations to identify a variety of topological phonon band crossings in MnSi and CoSi single crystals. We find a distinct relation between the Chern numbers of a band-crossing node and the scattering intensity modulation in momentum space around the node. Given sufficiently high resolution, our method can be used to determine arbitrarily large Chern numbers of topological phonon band-crossing nodes.

High-energy spin excitations in the quantum spin liquid candidate Zn-substituted barlowite probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

A quantum spin liquid is a novel ground state that can support long-range entanglement between magnetic moments, resulting in exotic spin excitations involving fractionalized $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ spinons. Here, we measure the excitations in single crystals of the spin liquid candidate Zn-barlowite using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. By analyzing the incident polarization and temperature dependences, we deduce a clear magnetic scattering contribution forming a broad continuum that surprisingly extends up to ~ $200$ meV (~14$J$, where $J$ is the magnetic exchange). In conclusion, the excitation spectrum reveals that significant contributions arise from multiple pairs of spinons and/or antispinons at high energies.

Detection of a two-phonon mode in a cuprate superconductor via polarimetric resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Recent improvements in the energy resolution of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments (RIXS) at the Cu-L 3 edge have enabled the study of lattice, spin, and charge excitations. Here, we report on the detection of a low-intensity signal at 140 meV, twice the energy of the bond-stretching (BS) phonon mode, in the cuprate superconductor Bi 2 ⁢Sr 2 CaCu 2 ⁢O 8+x (Bi-2212). Ultrahigh-resolution polarimetric RIXS measurements allow us to resolve the outgoing polarization of the signal and identify this feature as a two-phonon excitation. Further, here we study the connection between the two-phonon mode and the BS one-phonon mode by constructing a joint density of states toy model that reproduces the key features of the data.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the topological semimetal FeSi

The energy spectrum of topological semimetals contains protected degeneracies in reciprocal space that correspond to Weyl, Dirac, or multifold fermionic states. To exploit the unconventional properties of these states, one has to access the electronic structure of the three-dimensional bulk. In this paper, we present a joint theory-experiment study of the electronic structure of a candidate topological semimetal with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We resolve the bulk electronic states of FeSi using momentum-dependent RIXS at the Fe L 3 edge. We observe a broad excitation continuum devoid of sharp features, consistent with particle-hole scattering in an underlying electronic band structure. Using density functional theory (DFT), we calculate the electronic structure of FeSi and derive a band theory formulation of RIXS in the fast collision approximation to model the scattering process with zero adjustable parameters. While band theory predicts an excitation continuum with broad spectral features similar to the observed ones, discrepancies between theory and experiment suggest the presence of low-energy processes that DFT alone does not account for. Further, this study of RIXS in a topological semimetal shows that RIXS is a useful tool for revealing unanticipated behavior of bulk electronic states in this class of materials.

Spin-Orbit-Lattice Entangled State in A 2 ⁢MgReO 6 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) Revealed by Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

The 5d 1 ordered double perovskites present an exotic playground for studying novel multipolar physics due to large spin-orbit coupling. Here, we present Re L 3 edge resonant inelastic Xray scattering (RIXS) results that reveal the presence of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the A 2 MgReO 6 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) family of 5d 1 double perovskites. The spin-orbit excitations in these materials show a strongly asymmetric lineshape and exhibit substantial temperature dependence, indicating that they are dressed with lattice vibrations. Our experimental results are explained quantitatively through a RIXS calculation based on a spin-orbit-lattice entangled electronic ground state with the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect taken into consideration. We find that the spin-orbitlattice entangled state is robust against magnetic and structural phase transitions as well as against significant static Jahn-Teller distortions. Our results illustrate the importance of including vibroniccoupling for a complete description of the ground state physics of 5d 1 double perovskites.

Exploring a New Regime of Molecular Orbital Physics in 4⁢d Cluster Magnets with Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

Molecular orbital systems with clusters of heavy transition metal (TM) ions are one of the most important classes of model materials for studying the interplay between local physics and effects of itinerancy. Despite a large number of candidates identified in the family of 4⁢d TM materials, an understanding of their physics from competing microscopic energy scales is still missing. Here, we bridge this gap by reporting the first resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurement on a well-known series of Ru cluster magnets with a 6⁢H-perovskite structure Ba 3 ⁢M⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9 (M 3+ = In 3+ , Y 3+ , La 3+ ) comprised of Ru dimers. In addition to providing a microscopic explanation for their anomalous magnetic properties, our RIXS measurements combined with theoretical modeling uncover a new regime of molecular orbital physics where the combined effect of large hopping and small spin-orbit coupling results in highly fragile electronic states in the Ru-dimer compounds directly manifested as an abrupt change in the RIXS spectrum accompanying a tiny change in the local structure tuned by the M-site ion. This unique combination of energy scales found only in the 4⁢d but not the 5⁢d cluster magnets highlights the value of these materials as a new platform for studying quantum phase transition involving molecular orbitals.

Inelastic neutron spectra of polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers

We present the vibrational spectra of polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers collected using inelastic neutron scattering. We ascertain the behavior of a broad range of vibrational spectra that are optically silent, and demonstrate a direct connection between these modes and thermomechanical properties of the fibers. We show directionally dependent coupling of hydrogen in the carbon fiber matrix, which is directly linked to mechanical properties. Further, we show hydrogen preferentially couples to the midband of the vibrational spectrum, and that there are higher overall mode populations in the traditional Raman D–G intervalley region, suggesting involvement of these modes in tensile strength reduction and transport properties.
