Octo-diamond crystal of nanoscale tetrahedra with interchanging chiral motifs

Despite their simplicity, tetrahedra can assemble into diverse high- and low-density structures. Here we report a low-density ‘octo-diamond’ structure formed by nanoscale solid tetrahedra with a 64-tetrahedron unit cell containing 8 cubic-diamond subcells. The formed crystal is achiral, but is composed of chiral bilayers with alternating handedness. The left- and right-handed chirality of the bilayers, combined with the plasmonic nature of the gold tetrahedra, produces chiroptical responses at the crystal surface. We uncover that the hydrophobic substrate facilitates the arrangement of tetrahedra into irregular ring-like patterns, creating a critical, uneven topography to stabilize the observed octo-diamond structure. This study reveals a potent way to affect colloidal crystallization through particle–substrate interactions, expanding the nanoparticle self-assembly toolbox.

Determination of confinement regime boundaries via separatrix parameters on Alcator C-Mod based on a model for interchange-drift-Alfvén turbulence

The separatrix operational space (SepOS) model (Eich and Manz 2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 086017) is shown to predict the L–H transition, the L-mode density limit, and the ideal magnetohydrodynamic ballooning limit in terms of separatrix parameters for a wide range of Alcator C-Mod plasmas. The model is tested using Thomson scattering measurements across a wide range of operating conditions on C-Mod, spanning $\overline{n}_{\mathrm{e}}$ = 0.3–5.5 $\times 10^{20}\,$m −3 , $B_{\mathrm{t}} = 2.5$–8.0 T, and $B_{\mathrm{p}}$= 0.1–1.2 T. An empirical regression for the electron pressure gradient scale length, $\lambda_{{p}_{\mathrm{e}}}$, against a turbulence control parameter, $\alpha_{\mathrm{t}}$, and the poloidal fluid gyroradius, $\rho_{\mathrm{s,p}}$, is constructed for H-modes and found to require positive exponents for both regression parameters, indicating turbulence widening of near-scrape-off layer widths at high $\alpha_{\mathrm{t}}$ and an inverse scaling with $B_{\mathrm{p}}$, consistent with results on ASDEX Upgrade. The SepOS model is also tested in the unfavorable drift direction and found to apply well to all three boundaries, including the L–H transition as long as a correction to the Reynolds energy transfer term, $\alpha_\mathrm{RS} \lt 1$ is applied. I-modes typically exist in the unfavorable drift direction for values of $\alpha_{\mathrm{t}} \lesssim 0.3$. Finally, an experiment studying the transition between the Type-I ELMy and EDA H-mode is analyzed using the same framework. It is found that a recently identified boundary $\alpha_{\mathrm{t}} = 0.55$ at excludes most EDA H-modes but that the balance of wavenumbers responsible for the L-mode density limit, namely $k_\mathrm{EM} = k_\mathrm{RBM}$, may better describe the transition on C-Mod. The ensemble of boundaries validated and explored is then applied to project regime access and limit avoidance for the SPARC primary reference discharge parameters.

Efficient Xml Interchange (exi) For Python (expy)

EXPy provides a native Python interface into the LF Energy EVerest V2G protocol stack. The protocol stack is implemented in C/C++ and compiled into shared object libraries. EXPy provides the Python Ctypes translation of the C/C++ libraries for use with pure Python software. This project eliminates the need for integrating Python with third-party communications applications and greatly reduces the code base and improves performance. The other major benefit is the ability for EXPy to support new EXI based protocols as additional V2G standards are produced (e.g. upgrade from ISO 15118-2 to ISO 15118-20).

In-situ polymerized and crosslinked electrolytes with interchangeable Li/Na transport for battery applications

The next generation of batteries requires electrolytes with high conductivity, mechanical stability, good adhesion with electrodes, wide electrochemical windows, and scalability. The present study introduces a concept of doped quasi single-ion conducting copolymers based on methacrylate-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) and vinyl ethylene carbonate which at room temperature are mechanically robust and display ionic conductivities of ~0.1 mS/cm. These electrolytes can be polymerized/crosslinked in-situ, making them easily implementable in current battery manufacturing technologies. They also allow for switching between Li + and Na + transport using simple chemistry procedures. To demonstrate their potential for battery applications, the newly developed Li conductors have been tested in symmetric cells, exhibiting overall impedance below 350 Ohm and plating/stripping stability up to 1 mA/cm 2 . Moreover, lithium metal batteries incorporating this electrolyte and high-voltage Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) cathodes show good capacity retention (~79%) during charging and discharging for 80 cycles at C/10 rate and a Coulombic efficiency close to 100% in the entire measurement range. The compositional, mechanical and electrochemical versatility of these electrolytes opens new venues for the design of polymer-based batteries capable of fast charging and extended cycle life, aligning with the current global green energy storage strategies.
