The paper presents the attitude reorientation taking the advantage of solar radiation pressure without use of any fuel aboard. The strategy had been adopted to make Hayabusa spacecraft keep pointed toward the Sun for several months, while spinning. The paper adds the above mentioned results reported in Sedona this February showing another challenge of combining ion engines propulsion tactically balanced with the solar radiation torque with no spin motion. The operation has been performed since this March for a half year successfully. The flight results are presented with the estimated solar array panel diffusion coefficient and the ion engine's swirl torque.

A rapid start hollow cathode has been developed for high power ion thruster application. Using no low work function insert or heater, the Field Enhanced Refractory Metal (FERM) cathode electron emission occurs from a refractory metal tube concentric with the cathode barrel. Results are presented for FERM cathode operation in the high field strength Test Bed Ion Engine. Using a controlled glow discharge heating technique, cathode start up times of 1-2 secs are shown. Cathode V-I curves up to 35 ampere emission are presented and life limiting component erosion mechanisms, at these high current levels, are discussed.
Single planar Langmuir probes and fiber optic probes are used to concurrently measure the plasma properties and neutral density variation in a 30cm diameter ion engine discharge chamber, from the immediate vicinity of the keeper to the near grid plasma region. The fiber optic probe consists of a collimated optical fiber recessed into a double bore ceramic tube fitted with a stainless steel light-limiting window. The optical fiber probe is used to measure the emission intensity of excited neutral xenon for a small volume of plasma, at various radial and axial locations. The single Langmuir probes, are used to generate current-voltage characteristics at a total of 140 spatial locations inside the discharge chamber. Assuming a maxwellian distribution for the electron population, the Langmuir probe traces provide spatially resolved measurements of plasma potential, electron temperature, and plasma density. Data reduction for the NSTAR TH8 and TH15 throttle points indicates an electron temperature range of 1 to 7.9 eV and an electron density range of 4e10 to le13 cm(sup -3), throughout the discharge chamber, consistent with the results in the literature. Plasma potential estimates, computed from the first derivative of the probe characteristic, indicate potential from 0.5V to 11V above the discharge voltage along the thruster centerline. These values are believed to be excessively high due to the sampling of the primary electron population along the thruster centerline. Relative neutral density profiles are also obtained with a fiber optic probe sampling photon flux from the 823.1 nm excited to ground state transition. Plasma parameter measurements and neutral density profiles will be presented as a function of probe location and engine discharge conditions. A discussion of the measured electron energy distribution function will also be presented, with regards to variation from pure maxwellian. It has been found that there is a distinct primary population found along the thruster centerline, which causes estimates of electron temperature, electron density, and plasma potential, to err on the high side, due this energetic population. Computation of the energy distribution fimction of the plasma clearly indicates the presence of primaries, whose presence become less obvious with radial distance from the main discharge plume.
The NASA Glenn Research Center is developing a 5- to 10-kW ion engine for a broad range of mission applications. Simultaneously, a 5-kW breadboard power-processing unit (PPU) is being designed and fabricated by Boeing Electron Dynamic Devices, Torrance, California, under contract with Glenn. The beam supply, which processes up to 90 percent of the power into this unit, consists of four 1.1-kW power modules connected in parallel, equally sharing the output current. The modular design allows scalability to higher powers as well as the possibility of implementing an N + 1 redundant beam supply. A novel phaseshifted/pulse-width-modulated, dual full-bridge topology was chosen for this module design for its efficient switching characteristics. A breadboard version of the beam power supply module was assembled. Efficiencies ranging between 91.6 and 96.9 percent were measured for an input voltage range of 80 to 160 V, an output voltage range of 800 to 1500 V, and output powers from 0.3 to 1.0 kW. This beam supply could result in a PPU with a total efficiency between 93 and 95 percent at a nominal input voltage of 100 V. This is up to a 4-percent improvement over the state-of-the-art PPU used for the Deep Space 1 mission. A flight-packaged PPU is expected to weigh no more than 15 kg, which represents a 50-percent reduction in specific mass from the Deep Space 1 design. This will make 5-kW ion propulsion very attractive for many planetary missions.
Construction and method of arranging plurality of ion engines to form cluster thereby increasing efficiency and control by decreasing heat radiated to space
Because of the large mass, low ionization potential and large electron impact ionization cross section, use of buckminsterfullerene (C 60 ) as a propellant might result in significant increases in ion engine efficiency over that obtained with xenon at low specific impulse. Consequently, an experimantal program to investigate the feasibility of using fullerenes as a propellant was initiated. To eliminate the possibility of hot cathode surfaces causing fragmentation, fabrication of a radio-frequency discharge chamber was pursued. Experimental results using the radio-frequency source will be presented.
