Entropy variations and light ray operators from replica defects

We study the defect operator product expansion (OPE) of displacement operators in free and interacting conformal field theories using replica methods. We show that as n approaches 1 a contact term can emerge when the OPE contains defect operators of twist d - 2. For interacting theories and general states we give evidence that the only possibility is from the defect operator that becomes the stress tensor in the n → 1 limit. This implies that the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) is always saturated for CFTs with a twist gap. As a check, we show independently that in a large class of near vacuum states, the second variation of the entanglement entropy is given by a simple correlation function of averaged null energy operators as studied by Hofman and Maldacena. This suggests that sub-leading terms in the defect OPE are controlled by a defect version of the spin-3 non-local light ray operator and we speculate about the possible origin of such a defect operator. For free theories this contribution condenses to a contact term that leads to violations of QNEC saturation.

Delocalized polaron and Burstein-Moss shift induced by Li in α–V 2 O 5 : A DFT + DMFT study

For this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT)+U and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver to investigate the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 and Li x V 2 O 5 (x = 0.125 and 0.25). Pristine V 2 O 5 is a charge-transfer insulator with strong O p–V d hybridization, and it exhibits a large band gap (E gap ) as well as a nonzero conduction-band (CB) gap.We show that the band gap, the number of d electrons of vanadium, N d , and the CB gap for V 2 O 5 obtained from our DMFT calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental values. While the DFT +U approach replicates the experimental band gap, it overestimates the value of N d and underestimates the CB gap. In the presence of low Li doping, the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 are mainly driven by a polaronic mechanism, and electron spin resonance and electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopies observed the coexistence of free and bound polarons. Notably, our DMFT results identify both polaron types, with the bound polaron being energetically preferred, while the DFT +U method only predicts the free polaron. Our DMFT analysis also reveals that increased Li doping leads to electron filling in the conduction band, shifting the Fermi level. This result is consistent with the observed Burstein-Moss shift upon enhanced Li doping, and we thus demonstrate that the DFT + DMFT approach can be used for an accurate and realistic description of strongly correlated materials.

On the statistical theory of self-gravitating collisionless dark matter flow

Dark matter, if it exists, accounts for five times as much as the ordinary baryonic matter. Compared to hydrodynamic turbulence, the flow of dark matter might possess the widest presence in our universe. This paper presents a statistical theory for the flow of dark matter that is compared with N-body simulations. By contrast to hydrodynamics of normal fluids, dark matter flow is self-gravitating, long-range, and collisionless with a scale-dependent flow behavior. The peculiar velocity field is of constant divergence nature on small scale and irrotational on large scale. The statistical measures, i.e., correlation, structure, dispersion, and spectrum functions, are modeled on both small and large scales, respectively. Kinematic relations between statistical measures are fully developed for incompressible, constant divergence, and irrotational flow. Incompressible and constant divergence flow share the same kinematic relations for even order correlations. The limiting correlation of velocity $\mathrm{ρ_{L}=1/2}$ on the smallest scale ( r = 0) is a unique feature of collisionless flow ($\mathrm{ρ_{L}=1}$ for incompressible flow). On large scale, transverse velocity correlation has an exponential form $T_{2}∝e^{–r/r_2}$ with a constant comoving scale r 2 =21.3 Mpc/h that may be related to the horizon size at matter–radiation equality. All other correlation, structure, dispersion, and spectrum functions for velocity, density, and potential fields are derived analytically from kinematic relations for irrotational flow. On small scale, longitudinal structure function follows one-fourth law of ${S}_{2}^{1}∝r^{1/4}$. All other statistical measures can be obtained from kinematic relations for constant divergence flow. Vorticity is negatively correlated for scale r between 1 and 7 Mpc/h. Divergence is negatively correlated for r > 30 Mpc/h that leads to a negative density correlation.

Comparing Compressed and Full-Modeling analyses with FOLPS: implications for DESI 2024 and beyond

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will provide unprecedented information about the large-scale structure of our Universe. In this work, we study the robustness of the theoretical modelling of the power spectrum of F OLPS , a novel effective field theory-based package for evaluating the redshift space power spectrum in the presence of massive neutrinos. We perform this validation by fitting the AbacusSummit high-accuracy N -body simulations for Luminous Red Galaxies, Emission Line Galaxies and Quasar tracers, calibrated to describe DESI observations. We quantify the potential systematic error budget of F OLPS finding that the modelling errors are fully sub-dominant for the DESI statistical precision within the studied range of scales. Additionally, we study two complementary approaches to fit and analyse the power spectrum data, one based on direct Full-Modelling fits and the other on the ShapeFit compression variables, both resulting in very good agreement in precision and accuracy. In each of these approaches, we study a set of potential systematic errors induced by several assumptions, such as the choice of template cosmology, the effect of prior choice in the nuisance parameters of the model, or the range of scales used in the analysis. Furthermore, we show how opening up the parameter space beyond the vanilla ΛCDM model affects the DESI observables. These studies include the addition of massive neutrinos, spatial curvature, and dark energy equation of state. We also examine how relaxing the usual Cosmic Microwave Background and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis priors on the primordial spectral index and the baryonic matter abundance, respectively, impacts the inference on the rest of the parameters of interest. This paper pathways towards performing a robust and reliable analysis of the shape of the power spectrum of DESI galaxy and quasar clustering using F OLPS .

Ballooning stability of axisymmetric plasmas with sheared equilibrium flows

A WKB theory is formulated for large-n ballooning modes in axisymmetric, toroidal plasmas with sheared equilibrium flows. The validity of the standard ballooning respresentation is severely restricted in the presence of sheared toroidal flow, despite the fact that to leading order in (1/n), where n is the azimuthal number, the eigenmode equation contains only derivatives along a field line. Necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are obtained in a high-beta ordering for rigid toroidal rotation as well as field-aligned flows.

Soft gravitons in the BFSS matrix model

BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large N limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing N nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are applied to the BFSS matrix model. It is shown that soft gravitons are realized by submatrices whose rank is held fixed in the large N M-theory limit, rather than the usual linear scaling with N for hard gravitons. The soft expansion is identified with the large N expansion and the soft theorem becomes a universal formula for the quantum mechanical scattering of such submatrix excitations. This formula is shown to be the Ward identity of large type IIA U(1) RR asymptotic gauge symmetry in the matrix model, whose asymptotic boundaries are at future and past timelike infinity.

A fully solvable model of fermionic interaction in 3 + 1d

Recently, Romatschke found that the poles in O(N) scalar theories do not affect observables such as temperature and pressure. Romatschke went on to show this result holds for marginal, relevant, and irrelevant operators in 3 + 1d O(N) scalar theories. We continue in this direction by studying large-N fermi-interactions in 3 + 1d. To do so, we produce a model of marginally coupled fermi-interactions which is fully renormalizable at large-N. This theory contains poles in the running coupling, however we argue these poles do not affect any physical observables. Further, our theory contains first order phase transition which separates a stable, meta-stable, and unstable phase.

Analytical model for large-scale turbulence

The paper presents an analytical model for large-scale turbulence, based on a new closure which depends on the growth rate of the instability-generating turbulence. For convection in stars the results of the mixing-length theory are recovered, and for laboratory convection the N = R to the 1/3 power law is recovered. The present model can readily be extended to include magnetic fields and rotation.

Theory for Cd 3 As 2 thin films in the presence of magnetic fields

Here we present a theory for thin films of the Dirac semimetal Cd 3 ⁢As 2 in the presence of magnetic fields. We show that, above a critical thickness, specific subbands n of thin film Cd 3 ⁢As 2 are in a quantum spin Hall insulator regime and study their response to in- and out-of-plane magnetic fields. We find that sufficiently large in-plane Zeeman fields drive the system toward a 2D Dirac semimetal regime, provided the field is directed perpendicular to a high-symmetry mirror plane. For other directions, we find the Dirac points to be weakly gapped. We further investigate how the system responds to finite out-of-plane field components, both starting from the quantum spin Hall regime at small in-plane fields and from the 2D Dirac semimetal regimes at larger in-plane fields, addressing recent experimental observations in A. Information content of higher order galaxy correlation functions

The shapes of galaxy N-point correlation functions can be used as standard rulers to constrain the distance–redshift relationship. The cosmological density fields traced by late-time galaxy formation are initially nearly Gaussian, and hence, all the cosmological information can be extracted from their two-point correlation function. Subsequent non-linear evolution under gravity, as well as halo and then galaxy formation, generates higher order correlation functions. Since the mapping of the initial to the final density field is, on large scales, invertible, it is often claimed that the information content of the initial field’s power spectrum is equal to that of all the higher order functions of the final, non-linear field. This claim implies that reconstruction of the initial density field from the non-linear field renders analysis of higher order correlation functions of the latter superfluous. We show that this claim is false when the N-point functions are used as standard rulers. Constraints available from joint analysis of the two and three-point correlation functions can, in some cases, exceed those offered by the initial power spectrum. We provide a mathematical justification for this claim and demonstrate it using a large suite of N-body simulations. In particular, we show that for the z = 0 real-space matter field in the limit of vanishing shot-noise, taking modes up to k max = 0.2 h Mpc −1 , using the bispectrum alone offers a factor of 2 reduction in the variance on the cosmic distance scale relative to that available from the linear power spectrum.

Tetragonal Kondo Insulator EuCd 2 Sb 2 Discovered via High Pressure High Temperature Synthesis

Abstract Magnetic and electronic properties of quantum materials heavily rely on the crystal structure even in the same chemical compositions. In this study, it is demonstrated that a layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 structure can be obtained by treating bulk trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (600 °C). Magnetization measurements of the newly formed layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 confirm an antiferromagnetic ordering with Neel temperature ( T N ) around 16 K, which is significantly higher than that ( T N ≈ 7 K) of trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 , consistent with heat capacity measurements. Moreover, bad metal behavior is observed in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and the resistivity shows a dramatic increase around the Neel temperature. Electronic structure calculations with local density approximation dynamic mean–field theory (LDA+DMFT) show that this material is strongly correlated with well‐formed large magnetic moments, due to Hund's coupling, which is known to dramatically suppress the Kondo scale.

Polyakov’s confinement mechanism for generalized Maxwell theory

We study fractional-derivative Maxwell theory, as appears in effective descriptions of, for example, large N f QED 3 , graphene, and some types of surface defects. We argue that when the theory is realized on a lattice, monopole condensation leads to a confining phase via the Polyakov confinement mechanism.

Elucidating the Impact of Cis – Trans Organic Structure Directing Agent Isomer Ratios on the Aluminum Distribution Within SSZ-39

Despite their widespread use, the mechanisms governing the synthesis of zeolite catalysts are still poorly understood. A notable example of this problem is the uncertainty surrounding the influence of synthesis conditions on the placement of Al atoms in the zeolite framework which determines the active sites available for catalytic species. In this work, the role of the cis to trans isomer ratio of the OSDA N,N-dimethyl-3-5-dimethylpiperidinium on the energetics of 26 distinct Al pair distributions in SSZ-39 is examined both in the presence and absence of Na using density functional theory calculations. The initial orientation of the OSDA was found to have a significant impact on the final energies present, necessitating the screening of a large number of initial orientations with force field calculations and single point DFT calculations. Ground state energies were found to vary significantly with the ratio of cis to trans OSDAs with a Boltzmann distribution revealing the most likely Al pair distributions shift from sharing the same 8 membered rings to sharing the same double six membered rings to having no shared subunits as one increases the amount of cis OSDA present within the framework. The presence of Na was found to favor Al pair distributions where both Als occupied the same 6-membered ring. When an implicit solvent model was used to evaluate ground state energies the ideal Na sites shifted from 6-membered rings to empty SSZ-39 cages while OSDA positions and orientations remained largely the same. To provide insight on how kinetic factors may influence Al distributions, formation energies we calculated for connected double six membered rings. Further, these formation energies revealed a preference for Al pairs to occupy the same 4-membered ring which indicates kinetic and thermodynamic control may lead to different Al distributions in SSZ-39.

The Fermi function and the neutron's lifetime

The traditional Fermi function ansatz for nuclear beta decay describes enhanced perturbative effects in the limit of large nuclear charge Z and/or small electron velocity β. We define and compute the quantum field theory object that replaces this ansatz for neutron beta decay, where neither of these limits hold. We present a new factorization formula that applies in the limit of small electron mass, analyze the components of this formula through two loop order, and resum perturbative corrections that are enhanced by large logarithms. We apply our results to the neutron lifetime, supplying the first two-loop input to the long-distance corrections. Our result can be summarized as τ n x |V ud | 2 [1 + 3λ 2 ] [1 + Δ R ] = $\frac{5263.284(17) s}{1 + 27.04(7) x 10^{-3}}$ with |V ud | the up-down quark mixing parameter, τ n the neutron's lifetime, λ the ratio of axial to vector charge, and Δ R the short-distance matching correction. We find a shift in the long-distance radiative corrections compared to previous work, and discuss implications for extractions of |V ud | and tests of the Standard Model.

Notes on resonances and unitarity from celestial amplitudes

We study the celestial description of the O(N) sigma model in the large N limit as introduced by Coleman, Jackiw and Politzer. Focusing on three dimensions, we analyze the implications of a UV complete, all-loop order 4-point amplitude of pions in terms of correlation functions defined on the celestial circle. We find these retain many key features from the previously studied tree-level case, such as their relation to Generalized Free Field theories and crossing-symmetry, but also incorporate new properties such as IR/UV softness and S-matrix metastable states. In particular, to understand unitarity, we propose a form of the optical theorem that controls the imaginary part of the correlator based solely on the presence of these resonances. We also explicitly analyze the conformal block expansions and factorization of four-point functions into three-point functions. We find that summing over resonances is key for these factorization properties to hold. We end with some topics for future study.

Unraveling the structural dependency of Weyl nodes in Co 2 MnGa

Conventionally, the modulation of the intrinsic Weyl nodes in Weyl semimetals is challenging, due to topological protection. Here we report the structural dependence of the Weyl nodes in a Co2⁢MnGa Heusler thin film via a temperature-dependent tetragonal distortion. The ability to manipulate these Weyl nodes allows for the control of the intrinsic electromagnetic properties. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements identify a compressive tetragonal distortion with decreasing temperature from 300 to 20 K. The calculated Weyl properties can be directly compared with experimental parameters through the temperature-dependent XRD measurements which show the intrinsic correlation between Weyl properties and important magnetic parameters. Further, the microscopic momentum space properties of Weyl nodes such as the distance (d W ), solid angle (Ω W ), tilt (φ W ), and nodal point energy (E W ) directly affect the macroscopic observable properties such as exchange stiffness (A), magnetization (M), and effective anisotropy field $H^{eff}_{K}$, as shown via structure-dependent density functional theory calculations. These predictions are experimentally observed as large variations in the bulk magnetization and effective anisotropy field as a function of temperature. These results highlight a unique degree of freedom in the control of macroscopic magnetic properties via the modulation of the intrinsic properties of Weyl nodes through structural distortions.

SYK wormhole formation in real time

We study the real time formation of the ground state of two coupled SYK models. This is a highly entangled state which is close to the thermofield double state and can be viewed as a wormhole. We start from a high temperature state, we let it cool by coupling to a cold bath. We numerically solve for the large N dynamics. Our main result is that the system forms a wormhole by going through a region with negative specific heat, taking time that is independent of N. The dynamics is smooth everywhere and it seems to follow the equilibrium thermodynamic configurations of the microcanonical ensemble. Also we comment on the relation between this coupled SYK model and Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity theory with bulk fields.

A lattice study of ππ scattering at large N c

We present the first lattice study of pion-pion scattering with varying number of colors, N c . We use lattice simulations with four degenerate quark flavors, N f = 4, and N c = 3 – 6. We focus on two scattering channels that do not involve vacuum diagrams. These correspond to two irreducible representations of the SU(4) flavor group: the fully symmetric one, SS, and the fully antisymmetric one, AA. The former is a repulsive channel equivalent to the isospin-2 channel of SU(2). By contrast, the latter is attractive and only exists for N f ≥ 4. A representative state is (|D$^{+}_{s}$π + > – | D + K + >)/√2. Using Lüscher’s formalism, we extract the near-threshold scattering amplitude and we match our results to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) at large N c . For this, we compute the analytical U(N f ) ChPT prediction for two-pion scattering, and use the lattice results to constrain the N c scaling of the relevant low-energy couplings.
