Scalar and Tensor Charmonium Resonances in Coupled-Channel Scattering from Lattice QCD

We determine J P C = 0 + + and 2 + + hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes in the charmonium energy region up to 4100 MeV using lattice QCD, a first-principles approach to QCD. Working at m π ≈ 391 MeV , more than 200 finite-volume energy levels are computed and these are used in extensions of the Lüscher formalism to determine infinite-volume coupled-channel scattering amplitudes. We find that this energy region contains a single χ c 0 and a single χ c 2 resonance. Both are found as pole singularities on the closest unphysical Riemann sheet, just below 4000 MeV with widths around 70 MeV. The largest couplings are to kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channels in S -wave, and couplings to several decay channels consisting of pairs of open-charm mesons are found to be large and significant in both cases. Above the ground state χ c 0 , no other scalar bound states or near- D D ¯ threshold resonances are found, in contrast to several theoretical and experimental studies. Optimizing stochastic algorithms for hadron correlation function computations in lattice QCD using a localized distillation basis

Distillation is a quark-smearing method for the construction of a broad class of hadron operators useful in lattice QCD computations and defined via a projection operator into a vector space of smooth gauge-covariant fields. A new orthonormal basis for this space is constructed which builds in locality. This basis is useful for the construction of stochastic methods to estimate the correlation functions computed in Monte Carlo calculations relevant for hadronic physics.

Physical-mass calculation of ρ ( 770 ) and K * ( 892 ) resonance parameters via π π and K π scattering amplitudes from lattice QCD

We present our study of the ρ ( 770 ) and K * ( 892 ) resonances from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) employing domain-wall fermions at physical quark masses. We determine the finite-volume energy spectrum in various momentum frames and obtain phase-shift parametrizations via the Lüscher formalism and as a final step the complex resonance poles of the π π and K π elastic scattering amplitudes via an analytical continuation of the models. By sampling a large number of representative sets of underlying energy-level fits, we also assign a systematic uncertainty to our final results. This is a significant extension to data-driven analysis methods that have been used in lattice QCD to date, due to the two-step nature of the formalism. Our final pole positions, M + i Γ / 2 , with all statistical and systematic errors exposed, are M K * = 893 ( 2 ) ( 8 ) ( 54 ) ( 2 ) MeV and Γ K * = 51 ( 2 ) ( 11 ) ( 3 ) ( 0 ) MeV for the K * ( 892 ) resonance and M ρ = 796 ( 5 ) ( 15 ) ( 48 ) ( 2 ) MeV and Γ ρ = 192 ( 10 ) ( 28 ) ( 12 ) ( 0 ) MeV for the ρ ( 770 ) resonance. The four differently grouped sources of uncertainties are, in the order of occurrence: statistical, data-driven systematic, an estimation of systematic effects beyond our computation (dominated by the fact that we employ a single lattice spacing), and the error from the scale-setting uncertainty on our ensemble. Shallow Bound States and Hints for Broad Resonances with Quark Content b ¯ c ¯ u d in B − D ¯ and B * − D ¯ Scattering from Lattice QCD

We present the first determination of the energy dependence of the B − D ¯ and B * − D ¯ isospin-0, S -wave scattering amplitudes both below and above the thresholds using lattice QCD, which allows us to investigate rigorously whether mixed bottom-charm b ¯ c ¯ u d tetraquarks exist as bound states or resonances. The scattering phase shifts are obtained using Lüscher’s method from the energy spectra in two different volumes. To ensure that no relevant energy level is missed, we use large, symmetric 7 × 7 and 8 × 8 correlation matrices that include, at both source and sink, B ( * ) − D ¯ scattering operators with the lowest three or four possible back-to-back momenta in addition to local b ¯ c ¯ u d operators. We fit the energy dependence of the extracted scattering phase shifts using effective-range expansions. We observe sharp peaks in the B ( * ) − D ¯ scattering rates close to the thresholds, which are associated with shallow bound states, either genuine or virtual, a few MeV or less below the B ( * ) − D ¯ thresholds. In addition, we find hints for resonances with masses of order 100 MeV above the thresholds and decay widths of order 200 MeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Lattice QCD Study of Pion Electroproduction and Weak Production from a Nucleon

Quantum fluctuations in QCD influence nucleon structure and interactions, with pion production serving as a key probe of chiral dynamics. In this Letter, we present a lattice QCD calculation of multipole amplitudes at threshold, related to both pion electroproduction and weak production from a nucleon, using two gauge ensembles near the physical pion mass. We develop a technique for spin projection and construct multiple operators for analyzing the generalized eigenvalue problem in both the nucleon-pion system in the center-of-mass frame and the nucleon system with nonzero momentum. The numerical lattice results are then compared with those extracted from experimental data and predicted by low-energy theorems incorporating one-loop corrections. Towards Lattice QCD Calculations of Pion Production

Neutrino oscillation experiments require accurate reconstructions of neutrino energies, which depend in part on a theoretical understanding of the axial N→Δ transition form factors. A lattice QCD study of this transition will require construction of all hadronic states with energies up to mΔ, which at the physical point includes Nπ and Nππ. Building interpolating operators from sparse grids at the source and sink is a versatile method that allows construction of a wide range of diagram topologies and has successfully been used in other multi-hadron calculations. We will discuss application of this method to nucleon-pion systems and present preliminary results.

Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. Moments of parton distribution functions of any order from lattice QCD

We describe a procedure to determine moments of parton distribution functions of any order in lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The procedure is based on the gradient flow for fermion and gauge fields. The flowed matrix elements of twist-2 operators renormalize multiplicatively, and the matching with the physical matrix elements can be obtained using continuum symmetries and the irreducible representations of Euclidean 4-dimensional rotations. We calculate the matching coefficients at one-loop in perturbation theory for moments of any order in the flavor nonsinglet case. We also give specific examples of operators that could be used in lattice QCD computations. It turns out that it is possible to choose operators with identical Lorentz indices and still have a multiplicative matching. One can thus use twist-2 operators exclusively with temporal indices, thus substantially improving the signal-to-noise ratio in the computation of the hadronic matrix elements.

Renormalization and matching for the Collins-Soper kernel from lattice QCD

The Collins-Soper kernel, which governs the energy evolution of transverse- momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs), is required to accurately predict Drell-Yan like processes at small transverse momentum, and is a key ingredient for extracting TMDPDFs from experiment. Earlier we proposed a method to calculate this kernel from ratios of the so-called quasi-TMDPDFs determined with lattice QCD, which are defined as hadronic matrix elements of staple-shaped Euclidean Wilson line operators. Here we provide the one-loop renormalization of these operators in a regularization-independent momentum subtraction (RI'/MOM) scheme, as well as the conversion factor from the RI'/MOM-renormalized quasi-TMDPDF to the \( \overline{\mathrm{MS}} \) scheme. We also propose a procedure for calculating the Collins-Soper kernel directly from position space correlators, which simplifies the lattice determination.

DK/Dπ scattering and an exotic virtual bound state at the SU(3) flavour symmetric point from lattice QCD

Abstract ElasticS-wave scattering of a charm meson with a light pseudoscalar meson inJ P = 0 + is investigated in the flavour$$ \overline{\textbf{3}} $$ 3 ¯ ,6and$$ \overline{\textbf{15}} $$ 15 ¯ sectors at the SU(3) f flavour point using lattice QCD, working on three volumes withm π ≈ 700 MeV. Large bases of interpolating operators are employed to extract finite-volume spectra, which are subsequently used with the Lüscher method to provide constraints on infinite-volume scattering amplitudes. Examining the singularities of the amplitudes, theS-wave amplitude in the flavour$$ \overline{\textbf{3}} $$ 3 ¯ sector is found to contain a deeply bound state, strongly coupled to elastic threshold, corresponding to the$$ {J}^P={0}^{+}\ {D}_{s0}^{\ast }(2317) $$ J P = 0 + D s 0 ∗ 2317 . In the exotic flavour6sector a virtual bound state is found at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{pole}}} $$ s pole = 2510 – 2610 MeV, roughly 40 – 140 MeV below threshold, whereas the$$ \overline{\textbf{15}} $$ 15 ¯ channel shows weak repulsion.

Towards determination of the strong coupling $α_s(m_Z)$ from four-flavor lattice QCD using the continuous $β$-function method

The precise value of the strong coupling $α_s(m_{Z})$ at the $Z$-boson mass $m_{Z}$ is essential for high-energy phenomenology and precision tests of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We present the status of a program targeting a $\sim 0.3\%$ determination of $α_s(m_{Z})$ using the renormalization group $β$-function in the infinite volume gradient flow scheme based on lattice QCD simulations of degenerate four-flavor highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles. In particular, we analyze both tree-level cutoff effects and finite-mass effects. We also outline the next steps of the analysis, including the infinite-volume and continuum extrapolations required for a precise determination of $α_s(m_Z)$.

Nonperturbatively renormalized nucleon gluon momentum fraction in the continuum limit of N f = 2 + 1 + 1 lattice QCD

We present the nonperturbatively renormalized nucleon gluon momentum fraction using ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by the MILC Collaboration. The calculation is done using clover fermions for the valence action with three pion masses, 220, 310, and 690 MeV, and three lattice spacings, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm. The renormalization is done using RI/MOM nonperturbative renormalization and using cluster-decomposition error reduction (CDER) to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the renormalization constant. We find the CDER technique is particularly important to improve the signal at the finer lattice ensembles where the lattice volume is larger. We extrapolate the gluon momentum fraction to the continuum-physical limit and obtain $\langle{x}\rangle$ g = 0.502⁢(53) stat+NPR ⁢(50) mixing in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 2 GeV, where first error includes the statistical error and uncertainties in nonperturbative renormalization, while the latter systematic error accounts for ignoring quark mixing. Our gluon momentum fraction is consistent with other recent lattice-QCD results at physical pion mass.
