Description of longitudinal space charge effects in beams and plasma through dielectric permittivity

We develop a universal framework which allows quickly solve a wide class of problems for longitudinal space charge effects in beams and plasmas in cylindrical geometry. We introduce the longitudinal dielectric permittivity for the beam of charged particles, which describes its collective space charge response. The analysis yields an effective plasma frequency, which depends on the transverse geometry of the system. This dielectric permittivity mirrors the dielectric permittivity of plasma and matches the one dimensional (1D) expression once the transverse size of the beam is large. Several particle species can be included as additive terms describing susceptibility of each specie. The developed approach allows to study stability criteria for collective beam-beam and beam-plasma instabilities for arbitrary transverse distributions in particle densities.

Longitudinal tapering in gas jets for increased efficiency of 10-GeV class laser plasma accelerators

Modern laser plasma accelerators often require plasma waveguides tens of centimeters long to propagate a high-intensity drive laser pulse. Tapering the longitudinal gas density profile in 10 cm scale gas jets could allow for single stage laser plasma acceleration well beyond 10 GeV with current petawatt-class laser systems. Via simulation and interferometry measurements, we show density control by longitudinally adjusting the throat width and jet angle. Density profiles appropriate for tapering were calculated analytically and via particle-in-cell simulations and were matched experimentally. Further, these simulations show that tapering can increase electron beam energy using 19 J laser energy from ∼9 GeV to > 12 GeV in a 30 cm plasma and the accelerated charge by an order of magnitude.

Longitudinal position dependence of dark line defect growth rate in high-power diode lasers at 790 nm

Using a nondestructive, in situ near-infrared defect imaging technique, we obtained time-resolved images of dark line defect (DLD) growth in the cavities of several high-power 790-nm diode lasers and calculated individual DLD growth rates. A clear longitudinal spatial dependence in the DLD growth rate was observed, in which the DLD growth rate was faster near the anti-reflective (AR) facet. Longitudinal spatial hole burning simulation results indicate that the total photon density increases toward the AR facet, while the carrier density decreases toward the AR facet. Here, these results suggest that photon absorption plays a key role in enhancing DLD growth beyond the contribution of the traditional carrier capture mechanism. Asymmetric DLD growth that was preferentially directed toward the high-reflectivity facet was also observed, providing further support for the role of photon absorption in the growth process. To account for these findings, we propose a photon-accelerated mechanism for the enhancement of DLD growth in which the slower carrier capture process in the traditional recombination-enhanced dislocation glide mechanism is replaced by a faster photon absorption process.

The hybrid topological longitudinal transmon qubit

We introduce a new hybrid qubit consisting of a Majorana qubit interacting with a transmon longitudinally coupled to a resonator. To do so, we equip the longitudinal transmon qubit with topological quasiparticles, supported by an array of heterostructure nanowires, and derive charge- and phase-based interactions between the Majorana qubit and the resonator and transmon degrees of freedom. Inspecting the charge coupling, we demonstrate that the Majorana self-charging can be eliminated by a judicious choice of charge offset, thereby maintaining the Majorana degeneracy regardless of the quasiparticles spatial arrangement and parity configuration. We perform analytic and numerical calculations to derive the effective qubit-qubit interaction elements and discuss their potential utility for state readout and quantum error correction. Further, we find that select interactions depend strongly on the overall superconducting parity, which may provide a direct mechanism to characterize deleterious quasiparticle poisoning processes.

Climatic clustering and longitudinal analysis with impacts on food, bioenergy, and pandemics

Predicted growth in world population will put unparalleled stress on the need for sustainable energy and global food production, as well as increase the likelihood of future pandemics. In this work, we identify high-resolution environmental zones in the context of a changing climate and predict longitudinal processes relevant to these challenges. We do this using exhaustive vector comparison methods that measure the climatic similarity between all locations on earth at high geospatial resolution relative to global-scale analyses. The results are captured as networks, in which edges between geolocations are defined if their historical climate similarities exceed a threshold. We apply Markov clustering and our novel Correlation of Correlations method to the resulting climatic networks, which provides unprecedented agglomerative and longitudinal views of climatic relationships across the globe. The methods performed here resulted in the fastest (9.37x10 18 operations/sec) and one of the largest (168.7x10 21 operations) scientific computations ever performed, with more than 100 quadrillion edges considered for a single climatic network. Our climatic analysis reveals areas of the world experiencing rapid environmental changes, which can have important implications for global carbon fluxes and zoonotic spillover events. Correlation and network analyses of this kind are widely applicable across computational and predictive biology domains, including systems biology, ecology, carbon cycles, biogeochemistry, and zoonosis research.

Sensitivity to longitudinal vector boson scattering and doubly charged Higgs boson production in $W^± W^± jj$ at future hadron colliders

We study the sensitivity to longitudinal vector boson scattering at a 27-, 50-, and 100-TeV pp collider using events containing two leptonically decaying same-electric-charge 𝑊 bosons produced in association with two jets. The baseline FCC-hh detector parametrization within the D ELPHES framework is used under the assumption of fully efficient pileup mitigation. A tightly constrained phase space with a dijet mass greater than 2 TeV is considered in order to suppress the impact of potential instrumental backgrounds. Based on this setup, the expected sensitivity to the production of longitudinally polarized same-sign 𝑊 boson pairs is evaluated. Additionally, expected limits are set on doubly charged Higgs bosons produced via vector boson fusion processes and decaying to same-sign 𝑊 boson pairs.

Tomography of longitudinal phase space linearization for the generation of attosecond electron bunches

The generation of electron bunches on the attosecond timescale is important for a multitude of accelerator-based applications. Here, we report on a tomographic measurement of the (pre)linearized longitudinal phase space of a low charge 3 MeV electron bunch generated with the 1.6 cell Pegasus photoinjector for the generation of attosecond bunches. The nonlinear correlations in the longitudinal phase space induced by space charge at the photocathode, radiofrequency field curvature of the gun, and vacuum dispersion are compensated using a compact X-band linearizer. Then, the initial and compensated phase of the picosecond electron bunch is precisely reconstructed by neural network assisted tomographic reconstruction from momentum spectra at varying buncher linac phase. Finally, we combine the measured phase space shape with particle tracking simulations to show that electron bunches as short as 941 as develop downstream the beamline.

Measurement of R = σ L / σ T and the separated longitudinal and transverse structure functions in the nucleon-resonance region

Here we report on a detailed study of longitudinal strength in the nucleon resonance region, presenting new results from inclusive electron-proton cross sections measured at Jefferson Lab Hall C in the four-momentum transfer range 0.2 < Q 2 < 5.5 GeV 2 . The data have been used to accurately perform over 170 Rosenbluth-type longitudinal/transverse separations. The precision R = $\sigma_{L} /\sigma _{T}$ data are presented here, along with the first separate values of the inelastic structure functions F 1 and F L in this regime. The resonance longitudinal component is found to be significant. With the new data, quark-hadron duality is observed above Q 2 = 1 GeV 2 in the separated structure functions independently.

Longitudinal form Factors of A ≤ 10 Nuclei in a Chiral Effective Field Theory Approach

Here, in this work, we present the elastic electron scattering longitudinal form factors of A ≤ 10 nuclei computed in a variational Monte Carlo approach. We employ the Norfolk family of local chiral interactions and a consistent electromagnetic charge operator. Our calculations are compared both to data and past theoretical evaluations. This work represents, to our knowledge, the first accurate calculation of longitudinal form factors using manybody methods based on interacting nucleon degrees of freedom in the 7 ≤ A ≤ 10 mass range. Finally, we identify 9 Be and 10 B as candidate targets for renewed experimental interest, as they exhibit the potential to provide more stringent constraints on the theoretical models.

Streamer self-focusing in an external longitudinal magnetic field

The numerical simulation of the development of a streamer discharge in a gap with an external longitudinal magnetic field was used to demonstrate the self-focusing of such discharges. Self-focusing is caused by a sharp deceleration of the radial ionization wave due to a change in the electron energy distribution function, a decrease in the average electron energy, the rate of gas ionization, and the electron mobility in crossed electric and magnetic fields as compared to the case of the discharge development without a magnetic field. The self-focusing effect of a streamer discharge in an external longitudinal magnetic field is observed for both positive and negative pulse polarities. The work proposes an estimate of the critical value of the magnetic field, which makes it possible to control the development of pulsed high-voltage discharges at various gas pressures.

Bendability parameter for twisted ribbons to describe longitudinal wrinkling and delineate the near-threshold regime

We propose a dimensionless bendability parameter, ε -1 =[(h/W) 2 ⁢T -1 ] -1 , for wrinkling of thin, twisted ribbons with thickness h, width W, and tensional strain T. Bendability permits efficient collapse of data for wrinkle onset, wavelength, critical stress, and residual stress, demonstrating longitudinal wrinkling's primary dependence on this parameter. This parameter also allows us to distinguish the highly bendable range (ε -1 >20) from moderately bendable samples (ε -1 ϵ(0,20]). We identify scaling relations to describe longitudinal wrinkles that are valid across our entire set of simulated ribbons. When restricted to the highly bendable regime, simulations confirm theoretical near-threshold (NT) predictions for wrinkle onset and wavelength.

Longitudinal Wobbling Motion in Au 187

The rare phenomenon of nuclear wobbling motion has been investigated in the nucleus 187Au. A longitudinal wobbling-bands pair has been identified and clearly distinguished from the associated signature-partner band on the basis of angular distribution measurements. Theoretical calculations in the framework of the particle rotor model are found to agree well with the experimental observations. This is the first experimental evidence for longitudinal wobbling bands where the expected signature partner band has also been identified, and establishes this exotic collective mode as a general phenomenon over the nuclear chart.

Direct Observation of Coherent Longitudinal and Shear Acoustic Phonons in TaAs Using Ultrafast X-Ray Diffraction

Here, using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we investigated optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches our simulations. We observed an asymmetry in the spectral line shape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. We argue on the basis of symmetry that these acoustic deformations can transiently alter the electronic structure near the Weyl points and support this with model calculations. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting acoustic deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal and electronic structures.

Exploring the Three-Dimensional Momentum Distribution of Longitudinally Polarized Quarks in the Proton

By analyzing experimental data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized targets, we extract the transverse momentum dependence of the quark helicity distribution, i.e., the difference between the three-dimensional motion of quarks with polarization parallel or antiparallel to the longitudinal polarization of the parent hadron. We perform the analysis at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading perturbative accuracy. The quality of the fit is very good for both cases, reaching a χ 2 per number of data points equal to 1.11 and 1.09, respectively. Although the limited number of data points leads to significant uncertainties, the data are consistent with an interpretation in which the helicity distribution is narrower in transverse momentum than the unpolarized distribution. Precision measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for dijet production at intermediate pseudorapidity in polarized 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration reports precise measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, 𝐴 𝐿⁢𝐿 , for dijet production with at least one jet at intermediate pseudorapidity 0.8 < 𝜂 jet < 1.8 in polarized proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. This study explores partons scattered with a longitudinal momentum fraction (𝑥) from 0.01 to 0.5, which are predominantly characterized by interactions between high-𝑥 valence quarks and low-𝑥 gluons. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at 200 GeV with improved precision and are found to be consistent with the predictions of global analyses that find the gluon polarization to be positive. In contrast, the negative gluon polarization solution from the JAM Collaboration is found to be strongly disfavored.

Single-Shot Reconstruction of Electron Beam Longitudinal Phase Space in a Laser Wakefield Accelerator

We report on a single-shot longitudinal phase-space reconstruction diagnostic for electron beams in a laser wakefield accelerator via the experimental observation of distinct periodic modulations in the angularly resolved spectra. Such modulated angular spectra arise as a result of the direct interaction between the ultrarelativistic electron beam and the laser driver in the presence of the wakefield. A constrained theoretical model for the coupled oscillator, assisted by a genetic algorithm, can recreate the experimental electron spectra and, thus, fully reconstructs the longitudinal phase-space distribution of the electron beam with a temporal resolution of approximately 1.3 fs. In particular, it reveals the slice energy spread of the electron beam, which is important to measure for applications such as x-ray free electron lasers. In our experiment, the root-mean-square energy spread retrieved is bounded at 9.9 MeV, corresponding to a 0.9%–3.0% relative spread, despite the overall GeV energy beam having approximately 100% relative energy spread.

The Role of Azimuthal Prestress in the Longitudinal Degradation of Nb 3 Sn Superconducting Magnets

Superconducting magnet coils are subject to enormous electro-magnetic forces which push the cables away from the winding pole, and against the surrounding structure. This structure is usually optimized trying to limit the overall motion and the strains experienced by the superconducting elements. To achieve this, preload forces are applied both in the coil cross-section and along its length. If the e.m. forces overcome these preloads, separation between the coil and the pole occurs, resulting in an overall loss of rigidity. During the magnet design process, it is often tempting to treat the optimization of the azimuthal and longitudinal preload systems separately. However, the two are inextricably related: as the cross-section preload increases, friction can prevent any motion in the longitudinal plane, and decreasing it can instead allow dangerous motions in the conductor ends. The latter can result in very high strains and, in Nb 3 Sn conductors, damage that can prevent the magnet to reach the desired performances. In an attempt to define design guidelines, in this paper we use simplified numerical models to compute, as a function of the in-plane prestress, the variation of the peak strains in the end region of the coils. Finally, we investigate the impact of the azimuthal prestress on a real magnet case, the High-Luminosity Nb 3 Sn Quadrupole MQXF.

Longitudinal Effects on Plant Species Involved in Agriculture and Pandemic Emergence Undergoing Changes in Abiotic Stress

In this work we identify changes in high-resolution zones across the globe linked by environmental similarity that have implications for agriculture, bioenergy, and zoonosis. We refine exhaustive vector comparison methods with improved similarity metrics as well as provide multiple methods of amalgamation across 744 months of climatic data. The results of the vector comparison are captured as networks which are analyzed using static and longitudinal comparison methods to reveal locations around the globe experiencing dramatic changes in abiotic stress. Specifically we (i) incorporate updated similarity scores and provide a comparison between similarity metrics, (ii) implement a new feature for resource optimization, (iii) compare an agglomerative view to a longitudinal view, (iv) compare across 2-way and 3-way vector comparisons, (v) implement a new form of analysis, and (vi) demonstrate biological applications and discuss implications across a diverse set of species distributions by detecting changes that affect their habitats. Species of interest are related to agriculture (e.g., coffee, wine, chocolate), bioenergy (e.g., poplar, switchgrass, pennycress), as well as those living in zones of concern for zoonotic spillover that may lead to pandemics (e.g., eucalyptus, flying foxes).
