Acoustic Sensor Network for Planetary Exploration

This paper investigates the concept of an acoustic sensor network that can monitor a variety of geophysical processes occurring on other planetary bodies. In many cases sound is naturally omnidirectional and travels at known speeds which depend on the composition and density of the atmosphere. The differences in the time of flight of signals received by a distributed microphone network can be used to locate the source of the sound. We suggest this property is ideal for mobile planetary robots and can be used to expand the exploration envelope considerably by directing camera pointing or rover path planning thus extending beyond line-of-sight exploration. Acoustic signatures have been used in a variety of fields (e.g., sonar, heavy machinery) to identify and catalog sounds associated with a specific vessels and malfunctioning machinery. Our ears have cataloged hundreds of sounds and we continuously use these sounds both consciously and subconsciously to extract information about our surroundings. This paper investigates the use acoustic measurements on other planetary bodies that could be used to characterize specific environmental parameters such as rain droplet size, wind speed, thunder, or dust devil vortex diameter. The paper identified other important sound sources that are thought to occur on other bodies in our solar system include; booming or singing dunes, waves, rivers, streams, fluidfalls, geysers, hurricanes, tornados, ice flow, volcanoes, planetary quakes, avalanche, rock slides and ice cracking. In addition, this paper focused on issues associated with the development of appropriate sensors for the network including the specification of the sensitivity, frequency response, and directional response of each of the microphones in the network in order to aid in localization of sound sources. We also presented our initial development of the transducers for potential mission targets including Mars and Titan and investigated the use of signal processing techniques including windowing, time frequency plots and correlation techniques to resolve phase differences between sensors in the network to aid in localization. We also identified additional benefits of these sensor networks in that they could used as engineering sensors to diagnose mechanical malfunctions on a rover or lander actuators or mechanisms. We also noted that they could also enhance public outreach by adding sound to videos.

Two mechanisms for the spontaneous emergence, execution, and reprogramming of chemical logic circuits

A key question in origin-of-life research is how primitive life or life-like systems obtained reusable and reprogrammable machinery of processing information to respond to various environmental and internal stimuli. One strategy to approach this question is to view living systems as universal chemical computers. This approach focuses upon uncovering how reusable and reprogrammable chemical NOT, AND, and OR logic gates could appear under prebiotically possible scenarios where simple chemicals and second- or lower-order reactions are more frequent than macromolecules and higher-order reactions. In this article, we theoretically model two generic mechanisms of forming Boolean gates based on geochemically plausible reaction systems that could have preceded complex biopolymers. The mechanisms exploit simple bistable autocatalytic systems to encode binary variables and use heterogeneous dilution rates to differentially activate or deactivate autocatalysis in different reactors. We found that NOT, AND, and OR gates, as well as more complex logic circuits, can spontaneously arise from connected, well-mixed flow reactors based on (i) catalysis by a heterodimer between mutually inhibitory autocatalysts or (ii) selectively permeable tunnels connecting reactors. Our results suggest that simple machinery can support the prebiotic emergence of complex chemical logic circuits and provide new guides for experimentally actualizing chemical computation.

Aerodynamic Design and Optimization of Fan Stage for Boundary Layer Ingestion Propulsion System

The present paper addresses the process of preliminary design of a low-pressure fan and outlet guide vane (OGV) of a boundary layer ingestion (BLI) propulsion system. The tail-cone thruster systems of NASA's STARC_ABL (Single-aisle Turboelectric Aircraft with an Aft Boundary-Layer propulsor) adopts an axi-symmetric BLI type inlet as opposed to other embedded engine systems. Thus, the focus of the present work is placed on maximizing the efficiency of the fan and OGV stages under a significant radial distortion. A parameterization with B-spline function for camber line angles, metal chord, thickness distribution and stacking axis of blades is presented. The flowpath lines are also parameterized by B-spline function and aggregated in the design system of blades. The design optimization with evolutionary algorithm is performed with constraints of fan pressure ratio, OGV exit swirl angle and nozzle exit properties. The inlet conditions for the turbo-machinery CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) domain and the design goal of the fan stage are driven by a propulsion airframe integration (PAI) model that uses a 3-D unstructured RANS (Reynolds Average Navier Stokes) solver and actuator disk model. The expected power saving of the BLI propulsor is quantified via PAI analysis and the resulting preliminary design of the fan stages is compared with a clean-inlet flow propulsor.

Importance of Trade Dependencies for Agricultural Inputs: A Case Study of Finland

Approximately 80% of the world's population lives in countries that are dependent on food imports to sustain an adequate food supply. Besides these food imports, further dependencies also arise due to the requirements for agricultural inputs, including energy, fertilisers, feed and agricultural machinery. While the trade of agricultural inputs is relatively well represented in economic analysis, the quantification is often in terms of monetary values, and thus the assessments of the actual input quantities are very limited. In this paper, we develop a framework for analysis of the traded input quantities at the country-level and demonstrate its utility through an in-depth analysis of Finland's dependency on agricultural inputs. Further, we assess the importance of these inputs for domestic food production from a resilience perspective. We find that Finland, a country with relatively high food self-sufficiency but also a great dependency on imported agricultural inputs, experienced an increase in its dependency over the period 1996-2016. In case of trading partners, the story is more mixed: while trading partners for soybeans increased, those decreased in case of electricity while no significant change was observed in other commodities. In Finland, the rapeseed dependency on imports (ratio of net imports and consumption) grew from around 0% to almost 50% between the years 1987-2013. Changes for electricity remained substantially smaller, with dependency only slightly growing during the study period. Crude oil and soybean supplies are totally dependent on imports as neither is produced in Finland. Interestingly, the highest dependencies for agricultural inputs were on different countries than that for foodstuff imports. Thus, when identifying and assessing approaches to increase resilience to trade-related shocks, it is essential to understand both foodstuff and agricultural input dependencies within the global food system.

Tables for Supersonic Flow Around Right Circular Cones at Small Angle of Attack

The solution of supersonic flow fields by the method of characteristics requires that starting conditions be known. Ferri, in reference 1, developed a method-of-characteristics solution for axially symmetric bodies of revolution at small angles of attack. With computing machinery that is now available, this has become a feasible method for computing the aerodynamic characteristics of bodies near zero angle of attack. For sharp-nosed bodies of revolution, the required starting line may be obtained by computing the flow field about a cone at a small angle of attack. This calculation is readily performed using Stone's theory in reference 2. Some solutions of this theory are available in reference 3. However, the manner in which these results are presented, namely in a wind-fixed coordinate system, makes their use somewhat cumbersome. Additionally, as pointed out in reference 4, the flow component perpendicular to the meridian planes was computed incorrectly. The results contained herein have been computed in the same basic manner as those of reference 3 with the correct velocity normal to the meridian planes. Also, all results have been transferred into the body-fixed coordinate system. Therefore, the values tabulated herein may be used, in conjunction with the respective zero-angle-of-attack results of reference 5, as starting conditions for the method-of-characteristics solution of the flow field about axially symmetric bodies of revolution at small angles of attack. As in the zero-angle-of-attack case (ref. 5) the present results have been computed using the ideal gas value of 1.4 for the ratio of the specific heats of air. Solutions are given for cone angles from 2.5 deg to 30 deg in increments of 2.5 deg. For each cone angle, results were computed for a constant series of free-stream Mach numbers from 1.5 to 20. In addition, a solution was computed which yielded the minimum free-stream Mach number for a completely supersonic conical flow field. For cone angles of 27.5 deg and 30 deg, this minimum free-stream Mach number was above 1.5. Consequently, solutions at this Mach number were not computed for these two cone angles.
