Preparation and characteristics of superconducting cuprate thin films: Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 and substrated Bi-system

Characteristics of the electron-doped-type Nd(sub 2-x)Ce(sub x)CuO4 system and substituted Bi-system were studied using the high quality thin film samples grown by rf magnetron sputtering and/or subsequent heat treatment. The Nd(sub 2-x)Ce(sub x)CuO4 samples with excellent superconducting properties were obtained in thin films and their optical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies were performed with regard to the Ce content and reducing treatment. Substituted BiSr-Ln-Cu-O thin films were prepared and growth conditions for Bi-system with 2-2-1-2 and 2-2-2-2 phases were found. Moreover, a new 2-2-1-2 phase in the simple Bi-Sr-Cu-O system was fabricated by thin film processing and 80 K superconductivity was obtained.

Microwave response of high transition temperature superconducting thin films

We have studied the microwave response of YBa2Cu3O(7 - delta), Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O, and Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O high transition temperature superconducting (HTS) thin films by performing power transmission measurements. These measurements were carried out in the temperature range of 300 K to 20 K and at frequencies within the range of 30 to 40 GHz. Through these measurements we have determined the magnetic penetration depth (lambda), the complex conductivity (sigma(sup *) = sigma(sub 1) - j sigma(sub 2)) and the surface resistance (R(sub s)). An estimate of the intrinsic penetration depth (lambda approx. 121 nm) for the YBa2Cu3O(7 - delta) HTS has been obtained from the film thickness dependence of lambda. This value compares favorably with the best values reported so far (approx. 140 nm) in single crystals and high quality c-axis oriented thin films. Furthermore, it was observed that our technique is sensitive to the intrinsic anisotropy of lambda in this superconductor. Values of lambda are also reported for Bi-based and Tl-based thin films. We observed that for the three types of superconductors, both sigma(sub 1) and sigma(sub 2) increased when cooling the films below their transition temperature. The measured R(sub s) are in good agreement with other R(sub S) values obtained using resonant activity techniques if we assume a quadratic frequency dependence. Our analysis shows that, of the three types of HTS films studied, the YBa2Cu3O(7 - delta) thin film, deposited by laser ablation and off-axis magnetron sputtering are the most promising for microwave applications.

C-band superconductor/semiconductor hybrid field-effect transistor amplifier on a LaAlO3 substrate

A single-stage C-band superconductor/semiconductor hybrid field-effect transistor amplifier was designed, fabricated, and tested at 77 K. The large area (1 inch x 0.5 inches) high temperature superconducting Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O (TBCCO) thin film was rf magnetron sputtered onto a LaAlO3 substrate. The film had a transition temperature of about 92 K after it was patterned and etched. The amplifier showed a gain of 6 dB and a 3 dB bandwidth of 100 MHz centered at 7.9 GHz. An identical gold amplifier circuit was tested at 77 K, and these results are compared with those from the hybrid amplifier.

Formation and stability of polarization sheaths of a cross-field beam

A simple description is presented for a pure ion sheath formed on one side and a pure electron sheath formed on the other side of a neutral plasma beam. Both the ion and the electron sheath are found to be one-dimensionally stable and two-dimensionally unstable in a mode known as magnetron, slipping stream, and diocotron. This mode connects with the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in neutral matter. The analytical results are confirmed both qualitatively and quantitatively by numerical simulations. The simulations help define the linear behavior of the long-wave instability generated in the electron (or ion) sheath, including a strong shear.

Crystalline orientations of Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O(x) grains on MgO, SrTiO3, and LaAlO3 substrates

Crystalline orientations of Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O(x) grains in magnetron sputtered films on MgO (001), SrTiO3 (001), and LaAlO3 (001) substrates were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. In contrast to the nearly single crystalline films on the lattice matched substrates SrTiO3 and LaAlO3, films on the MgO (001) substrate, being polycrystalline in nature, exhibit several preferred in-plane grain orientations. These orientations agree well with a simplified theory of near-coincidence site lattices between Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O(x) and MgO.

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide resonators of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) on LaAlO3

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) resonators operating at 10.8 GHz have been fabricated from laser ablated and off-axis magnetron sputtered YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) high-temperature superconducting (HTS) thin films on LaAlO3. These resonators were tested in the temperature range from 14 to 92 K. The unloaded quality factor at 77 K of the HTS CBCPW resonators was 3 to 4 times that of a similar gold resonator. To the authors' knowledge, these results represent the first reported measurements of HTS-based CBCPW resonators.

Large-area YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films on sapphire for microwave applications

We have deposited YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) films with low microwave surface resistance (Rs) on 5-cm-diam, oxide-buffered sapphire substrates by planar magnetron sputtering. MgO buffer layers are used on M-plane (1 0 -1 0) sapphire, and R-plane (1 -1 0 2) sapphire is buffered by CeO2. Rs values of 450-620 microhms at 77 K and 10 GHz were measured across an entire 5-cm diam YBCO film on M-plane sapphire. For YBCO on R-plane sapphire, Rs values at 77 K and 10 GHz were 950 microohms for a 5-cm-diam wafer and 700 microohms for 1 x 1 sq cm samples.

Joining of materials with engineered interlayers

A reliable method to join a variety of different materials is developed which uses engineered coatings to produce strong bonds by solid-state techniques at low temperatures (300-400 C). The strong bonds are capable of accommodating the strains created between Si and most substrates due to differences in thermal expansion coefficients. The approach encompasses two phases: noble metal compliant interlayers and functionally gradient interlayer bonding. Preliminary results are presented and the Ag interlayer bonds are microstructurally characterized confirming that the planar magnetron sputtered coatings/bonds are fully dense and metallurgically sound.

Fabrication and analysis of Mo-Si multilayers

Mo-Si multilayers have been fabricated in our laboratory for reflecting various soft X-ray wavelengths. Several normal incidence mirrors have been produced for a solar sounding rocket flight. Using properly shaped masks on 3-inch diameter dc magnetrons, we can produce multilayers of a similar size having a uniformity of better than +/- 3 percent over their entire surface area. Peak reflectance of the multilayers are as high as 42 percent at 171 A. Efforts are underway to deposit several layers of different period on top of the multilayers in order to attenuate the reflection of 304 A, a very bright line of He II in the solar spectrum. In the interim, we have made a Mo-Si mirror that reflects at 304 A. In addition to obtaining information on the solar corona at this wavelength, this will greatly reduce the effects of the He II line when its image is appropriately subtracted from others.

Low temperature phase formation of Tl-based superconducting thin films in reduced oxygen atmosphere

Tl-Ba-Cu-Cu-O superconducting thin films were prepared by magnetron sputtering with postannealing in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. Single-phase Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O(x) can form on the MgO substrate at 800 C under P(O2) about 0.1 atm. However the phase formation temperature can be affected by the starting composition of the film. Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3O(x) phase can be formed by simply lowering the Tl2O pressure. The thermal stability of Tl1Ba2Ca2Cu3O(x) phase was studied by resistivity measurements at high temperatures.

Processing, electrical and microwave properties of sputtered Tl-Ca-Ba-Cu-O superconducting thin films

A reproducible fabrication process has been established for TlCaBaCuO thin films on LaAlO3 substrates by RF magnetron sputtering and post-deposition processing methods. Electrical transport properties of the thin films were measured on patterned four-probe test devices. Microwave properties of the films were obtained from unloaded Q measurements of all-superconducting ring resonators. This paper describes the processing, electrical and microwave properties of Tl2Ca1Ba2Cu2O(x) 2122-plane phase thin films.

A vacuum (10 exp -9 torr) friction apparatus for determining friction and endurance life of MoS(x) films

An ultrahigh-vacuum tribometer for use in a ball-on-disk configuration was specially designed for measuring the friction and endurance life of magnetron-sputtered solid lubricating MoS(x) films deposited on sputter-cleaned 400 C stainless-steel disks, when slid against a 6-mm-diameter 440 C stainless-steel ball. The results of tests showed that the tribometer performs satisfactorily in unidirectional rotation in vacuum at a pressure of 10 exp -7 Pa, 10 exp -9 torr. Similarities are observed in the life cycle friction behavior and the coefficient of friction as a function of the number of disk revolutions, for MoS(x) films at average Hertzian contact from 0.33 to 0.69 GPa.

Flexible polycrystalline thin-film photovoltaics for space applications

Polycrystalline thin-film photovoltaics (PV), such as CIS and CdTe, have received considerable attention recently with respect to space power applications. Their combination of stability, efficiency, and economy from large-scale monolithic-integration of modules can have significant impact on cost and weight of PV arrays for spacecraft and planetary experiments. An added advantage, due to their minimal thickness (approximately 6 microns sans substrate), is the ability to manufacture lightweight, flexible devices (approximately 2000 W/kg) using large-volume manufacturing techniques. The photovoltaic effort at Martin Marietta and ISET is discussed, including large-area, large-volume thin-film deposition techniques such as electrodeposition and rotating cylindrical magnetron sputtering. Progress in the development of flexible polycrystalline thin-film PV is presented, including evaluation of flexible CIS cells. In addition, progress on flexible CdTe cells is presented. Finally, examples of lightweight, flexible arrays and their potential cost and weight impact is discussed.

Magnetic and magneto-optical properties and domain structure of Co/Pd multilayers

The domain structure of Co/Pd(1.6/6.3 A)xN multilayers and its relation to the bulk magnetic properties of the samples were studied. The Co/Pd multilayers were deposited by rf and dc magnetron sputtering onto different substrates. It was found that magnetic and magnetooptical properties and domain structure of the multilayers were affected by total film thickness and substrate condition. Magnetization, coercivity, and anisotropy of the films decreased significantly as the film thickness dropped below 100 A. However, Kerr rotation angle had a maximum at the same thickness. The width of the domain structure increased with the decrease of the film thickness attaining the single domain state at N = 10. The initial curves in Co/Pd multilayers were found to depend on demagnetization process. The samples demagnetized by inplane field showed the largest difference between initial curves and the corresponding parts of the loops. Different domain structures were observed in the samples demagnetized by perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields.

Slow Wave Vane Structure with Elliptical Cross-Section Slots, an Analysis

Mathematical analysis of the wave equation in cylinders with elliptical cross-section slots was performed. Compared to slow wave structures with rectangular slots higher impedance and lower power dissipation losses are evident. These features could lead to improved designs of traveling wave magnetrons and gigahertz backward-wave oscillators as well as linear traveling wave tubes with relatively shallow slots.

Semiconductor-metal graded-index composite thin films for infrared applications

Theoretical/experimental studies have been carried out on germanium:silver (Ge:Ag) graded-index composite thin films which demonstrate that graded coatings, consisting of varied concentrations of Ag with respect to the Ge film thickness, exhibit different optical properties ranging from selective infrared (IR) reflectance to broadband IR absorptance. The graded coatings have been produced by dc magnetron cosputtering of Ge and Ag and the spectral properties are found to be stable against temperature. The coatings have been applied to an infrared tunnel sensor (micro-Golay cell) to improve the device performance.

Velocity surface measurements for ZnO films over /001/-cut GaAs

A potential application for a piezoelectic film deposited on a GaAs substrate is the monolithic integration of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices with GaAs electronics. Knowledge of the SAW properties of the filmed structure is critical for the optimum design of such devices. In this article, the measurements of the velocity surface, which directly affects the SAW diffraction, on the bare and metallized ZnO/SiO2 or Si3N4/GaAs /001/-cut samples are reported using two different techniques: (1) knife-edge laser probe, (2) line-focus-beam scanning acoustic microscope. Comparisons, such as measurement accuracy and tradeoffs, between the former (dry) and the latter (wet) method are given. It is found that near the group of zone axes (110) propagation direction the autocollimating SAW property of the bare GaAs changes into a noncollimating one for the layered structure, but a reversed phenomenon exists near the group of zone axes (100) direction. The passivation layer of SiO2 or Si3N4 (less than 0.2 micrometer thick) and the metallization layer change the relative velocity but do not significantly affect the velocity surface. On the other hand, the passivation layer reduces the propagation loss by 0.5-1.3 dB/microseconds at 240 MHz depending upon the ZnO film thickness. Our SAW propagation measurements agree well with theorectical calculations. We have also obtained the anisotropy factors for samples with ZnO films of 1.6, 2.8, and 4.0 micrometer thickness. Comparisons concerning the piezoelectric coupling and acoustic loss between dc triode and rf magnetron sputtered ZnO films are provided.
