Fast lithium ion diffusion in brownmillerite Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5

Transition metal oxides not only exhibits novel magnetic properties but also provides outstanding ionic transports. Ionic conductors have great potential for interesting tunable physical properties via ionic liquid gating and novel energy storage applications such as all-solid-state lithium batteries. In particular, low migration barriers and high hopping attempt frequency are the keys to achieve fast ion diffusion in solids. Taking advantage of the oxygen-vacancy channel in Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 , we show that migration barriers of lithium ion are as small as 0.28–0.17 eV depending on the lithium concentration rates. Our first-principles calculation also investigated hopping attempt frequency and concluded the room temperature ionic diffusivity and ion conductivity are high as 10 −7 –10 −6 cm 2 s −1 and 10 −3 –10 −2 Scm −1 , respectively, which outperform most of perovskite-type, garnet-type, and sulfide Li-ion solid-state electrolytes. This work proves Li x Sr 2 Co 2 O 5 as a promising super-ionic conductor.

Tailored Solvent Treatment for Optimized Production of Upcycled Anodes from End-Of-Life Li-Ion Batteries

Recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries typically overlook graphite because of its lower market value relative to that of transition-metal-containing cathode materials. However, graphite recovered from cycled lithium-ion batteries holds additional engineered value associated with the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). The SEI contributes critical electronic passivation of the graphite surface but becomes highly resistive with extended cycling, yielding poor cell performance. In this work, we apply tailored solvent treatment to end-of-life (EOL) graphite anodes to selectively remove adverse SEI components while retaining beneficially passivating species. We evaluate a series of polar protic solvents to achieve targeted removal of SEI components and control selectivity through rational variation in solvent properties. The physiochemical properties of treatment solvents correlate with both the retained SEI composition and the corresponding electrochemical performance of solvent-treated “upcycled” graphite anodes. Within the initial set of solvents evaluated, top-performing candidates show capacity and Coulombic efficiency nearly equivalent to those of an analogous pristine anode, as well as promising electrochemical performance enhancement with regard to irreversible capacity-loss metrics. This study establishes critical design principles for an optimized anode upcycling method that enhances the value of recycled graphite by retaining and upgrading the SEI.

Salt to Metal to Salt Heat Transfer in Narrow Fuel Pins (Final CRADA Report)

This work focused on improving the understanding and modeling of conjugate heat transfer in the Stable Salt Reactor (SSR), particularly the transfer of heat from molten fuel salt inside narrow fuel pins, through the metal cladding and into the surrounding coolant salt.

A generative machine learning model for designing metal hydrides applied to hydrogen storage

Developing new metal hydrides is a critical step toward efficient hydrogen storage in carbon-neutral energy systems. However, existing materials databases, such as the Materials Project, contain a limited number of well-characterized hydrides, which constrains the discovery of optimal candidates. This work presents a framework that integrates causal discovery with a lightweight generative machine learning model to generate novel metal hydride candidates that may not exist in current databases. Using a dataset of 450 samples (270 training, 90 validation, and 90 testing), the model generates 1000 candidates. After ranking and filtering, six previously unreported chemical formulas and crystal structures are identified, four of which are validated by density functional theory simulations and show strong potential for future experimental investigation. Overall, the proposed framework provides a scalable and time-efficient approach for expanding hydrogen storage datasets and accelerating materials discovery.
