Radiative lifetime of the 3s3p exp 3(exp 5 S sub 2 exp 0) metastable level of P(+)

The present experimental and theoretical results for the radiative lifetime of the 3s3p exp 3(exp 5 S sub 2 exp 0) metastable level of P(+) encompass an experimental determination of the (exp 5 S sub 2 exp 0) lifetime which represents the first measured lifetime of a low charge-state ion in the Si I sequence. This constitutes a fundamental test of the theoretical methods used to determine transition possibilities for intercombination lines involving this level, and suggests that theoretical techniques used to determine such transition probabilities in low-Z species of the Si I isoelectronic sequence should be reevaluated.

Radiative lifetimes of the 2s2p2(4P) metastable levels of N III

The radiative decay rates of N III 175 nm intersystem lines were measured in the laboratory by recording the time dependence of photon intensities emitted as the 2s2p2(4P) metastable term of N(2+) ions decay to the 2s22p(2P0) ground term. A cylindrical radio frequency ion trap was used to store the electron impact-produced N(2+) ions. The radiative decay signals were analyzed by multiexponential least-squares fits to the data. The measured radiative decay rates to the ground term are 1019(+/- 64)/s for 4P sub 1/2, 74.5(+/- 5.4)/s for 4P sub 3/2, and 308( +/- 22)/s for 4P sub 5/2. Comparisons of the measured values with theoretical values are presented.

Anomalous optogalvanic line shapes of argon metastable transitions in a hollow cathode lamp

Anomalous optogalvanic line shapes were observed in a commercial hollow cathode lamp containing argon buffer gas. Deviations from Gaussian line shapes were particularly strong for transitions originating from the 3P2 metastable level of argon. The anomalous line shapes can be described reasonably well by the assumption that two regions in the discharge are excited simultaneously, each giving rise to a purely Gaussian line shape, but with different polarities, amplitudes, and linewidths.

Metastable State Relaxation in a Gravitational Field

A metastable state relaxation equation for a physical system placed into a gravitational field is constructed for non-critical supersaturated solutions which arc in the immediate neighborhood of the coexistence line. Solutions of this equation are obtained in two different regimes: stationary and dynamic. The sedimentation time which can be defined as the time of the subcritical solute cluster redistribution corresponding to the final steady state in the gravitational field is found. The formation of the concentration gradient is proved analytically and its expression through the model parameters is obtained. The following analysis gives the expression for the sedimentation time which does not depend on the column height. The law of the concentration change with respect to the column height is also found and analyzed.

Metastable Demixing of Supercooled Cu-Co and Cu-Fe Alloys in an Oxide Flux

A systematic study on the liquid separation in supercooled Cu-Co and Cu-Fe alloys was performed using a melt fluxing which permits high supercooling to be achieved. Moreover, this method renders it possible to directly measure binodal temperatures and establish metastable liquid miscibility gap (LMG). All phase-separated samples at compositions ranging from 10 to 80 wt pct Co or to 83 wt pct Fe were found to exhibit droplet-shaped morphologies, in spite of various droplet distributions. Uniformly dispersed microstructures were obtained as the minority component was less than 20 vol.%; while beyond this percentage, serious coarsening was brought about. Calculations of the miscibility gap in the Cu-Co system and Stokes movement velocity of Co and Fe droplets in Cu matrix were made to analyze the experimental results.

Energetic Metastable Oxygen and Nitrogen Atoms in the Terrestrial Atmosphere

We have investigated the energy distributions of the metastable oxygen atoms in the terrestrial thermosphere. Nascent O(lD) atoms play a fundamental role in the energy balance and chemistry of the terrestrial atmosphere, because they are produced by photo-chemical reactions in the excited electronic states and carry significant translational energies.

Measurement of Metastable Lifetimes of Highly-Charged Ions

The present work is part of a series of measurements of metastable lifetimes of highly-charged ions (HCIs) which contribute to optical absorption, emission and energy balance in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), stellar atmospheres, etc. Measurements were carried out using the 14-GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) at the JPL HCI facility. The ECR provides useful currents of charge states such as C(sup(1-6)+), Mg(sup(1-6)+) and Fe(sup(1-17)+). In this work the HCI beam is focused into a Kingdon electrostatic ion trap for measuring lifetimes via optical decays.

Measurement of the metastable lifetime for the 2s^2 2p^2 ^1So level in O^2+

The radiative lifetime of the 1S0 level was found to be 540 +/- 27 ms. This is in good agreement with a previous measurement and with a number of theoretical calculations. Metastable lifetimes, when combined with collisional excitation rates, can provide a diagnostic for electron density Ne in a stellar or solar plasma.

Metastable Phase Relations in the System Ca(sub O)-Al2(sub O)3-MgO-TiO(sub 2): Applications to Ca- And Al-Rich Inclusions

Introduction: High temperature phases such as corundum, hibonite, grossite, and perovskite are among the earliest phases that condensed in the early solar nebula. Recent work has shown that defect-structured phases occur in some ultrarefractory inclusions as metastable, possibly more kinetically-favored alternatives to the thermodynamically predicted stable phase assemblages [1-4]. For example, Han et al. have shown that non-stoichiometry in hibonite is accommodated by extra "spinel" blocks in the structure instead of the equilibrium assemblages hibonite+corundum or hibonite+spinel. To explore these relations, we have conducted a series of experiments in the system CaO-Al2O3- MgO-TiO2. Here we discuss the compositions and mineralogy of the experimental samples and how they relate to phases in refractory inclusions with a focus on perovskite and spinel. Methods: For the series of annealing studies, a CaO-Al2O3 eutectic melt is allowed to react with a pure alumina crucible at 1,530degC for either 4 hours or 5 days, followed by quenching in air. Later experiments were similar except that additions of 5 wt% MgO, and CaTiO(sub 3) were used to explore the effect of minor elements on the phase assemblages. The experimental conditions resulted in reaction zones approximately 100-300 m wide consisting of a hibonite layer immediately adjacent to the corundum, followed by a grossite layer, and finally krotite with residual quenched melt. For the experiments with Mg, spinel is distributed in all layers but is mainly concentrated in the krotite layer. In the Ti-bearing experiments, perovskite precipitated in association with the krotite and residual melt. In addition to the experiments, we also analyzed perovskite grains in the FUN inclusion SHAL [5] and a large compact type A CAI from Allende. The experiments and refractory inclusions were analyzed using a JEOL 7600F SEM and quantitative analyses were obtained using the JEOL 8530F field-emission electron microprobe.

Discovery of Highly Blueshifted Broad Balmer and Metastable Helium Absorption Lines in a Tidal Disruption Event

We report the discovery of nonstellar hydrogen Balmer and metastable helium absorption lines accompanying a transient, high-velocity (0.05c) broad absorption line (BAL) system in the optical spectra of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2018zr (z = 0.071). In the Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra, absorption of high- and low-ionization lines is also present at this velocity, making AT2018zr resemble a low-ionization BALQSO. We conclude that these transient absorption features are more likely to arise in fast outflows produced by the TDE than absorbed by the unbound debris. In accordance with the outflow picture, we are able to reproduce the flat-topped Hα emission in a spherically expanding medium without invoking the typical prescription of an elliptical disk. We also report the appearance of narrow (~1000 kms(exp −1)) N III λ4640, He II λ4686, Hα, and Hβ emission in the late-time optical spectra of AT2018zr, which may be a result of UV continuum hardening at late times, as observed by Swift. Including AT2018zr, we find a high association rate (three out of four) of BALs in the UV spectra of TDEs. This suggests that outflows may be ubiquitous among TDEs and less sensitive to viewing angle effects compared to QSO outflows.
