1994 Portland Household Travel Survey

The Portland Household Travel Survey was conducted under the auspices of the Oregon Department of Transportation to provide information suitable for gaining an in-depth understanding of the activity and travel behavior of both households in metropolitan areas and the individuals within those households. The first round of surveys collected household activity data from the four metropolitan planning organization areas around Portland, plus three extra counties (Marion, Polk, and Yamhill). A total of 11,762 households participated in this study. Each household member was asked to record any activity that lasted 30 minutes or longer, or any activity that required travel for the specified 48-hour period.

Establishing nationwide power system vulnerability index across US counties using interpretable machine learning

Power outages have become increasingly frequent, intense, and prolonged in the US due to climate change, aging electrical grids, and rising energy demand. However, largely due to the absence of granular spatiotemporal outage data, we lack data-driven evidence and analytics-based metrics to quantify power system vulnerability. This limitation has hindered the ability to effectively evaluate and address vulnerability to power outages in US communities. Here, in this work, we collected ∼179 million power outage records at 15-min intervals across 3022 US contiguous counties (96.15 % of the area) from 2014 to 2023. We developed a power system vulnerability assessment framework based on three dimensions (intensity, frequency, and duration) and applied interpretable machine learning models (XGBoost and SHAP) to compute Power System Vulnerability Index (PSVI) at the county level. Our analysis reveals a consistent increase in power system vulnerability across the US counties over the past decade. We identified 318 counties across 45 states as hotspots for high power system vulnerability, particularly in the West Coast (California and Washington), the East Coast (Florida and the Northeast area), the Great Lakes megalopolis (Chicago-Detroit metropolitan areas), and the Gulf of Mexico (Texas). Our heterogeneity analysis indicates that urban counties and those located along regional transmission boundaries tend to exhibit significantly higher vulnerability. Our results highlight the significance of the proposed PSVI for evaluating the vulnerability of communities to power outages. The findings underscore the widespread and pervasive impact of power outages across the country and offer crucial insights to support infrastructure operators, policymakers, and emergency managers in formulating policies and programs aimed at enhancing the resilience of the US power infrastructure.

Experiences with the Bay Area Gigabit Network Testbed

The Bay Area Gigabit Network Testbed (BAGNet) is a high-performance ATM (155 Mbps) testbed located within the San Francisco Bay Area in northern California. BAGNet is a metropolitan-area network, spanning an area of approximately 50 square miles. There are fifteen sites participating in the testbed, with up to four hosts per site. Although BAGNet is an applications-oriented testbed, much of our effort has been directed towards getting the testbed running and understanding the factors that impact performance of an ATM network. We present some of our experiences in this paper.

Large spaceborne antenna technology: A system perspective

Land Mobile Satellite System (LMSS) is a communication system which provides radio communication to a large group of users within a vast geographical area (e.g. communications to and from mobile vehicles anywhere within the U.S.). Such radio communication may be in the form of radio telephone, paging, dispatch, or data transmission. The intended applications of LMSS range from emergency medical to disaster relief, from law enforcement to truck dispatch. By providing service to vast rural areas, LMSS compliments the current terrestrial service in the metropolitan areas and hence provides for a nationally ubiquitous coverage.

Expanding Activity Allocation Models to Daily Activities: Tracking Simulated Agent Trips to Exercise Locations in Clarksville, TN

Exercise facilities have been proven to have numerous physical, mental, and psychological benefits, yet exercise facilities are still inaccessible to a large portion of the population. This study serves to explore the accessibility of fitness centres through geographical, demographic, and temporal lenses through an expansion of the UrbanPop framework that seeks to allocate simulated agents to fitness centres in the Clarksville metro to explore the effects of travel distances on different demographics throughout the week. Findings indicate that senior and retired demographics consistently travel longer distances to exercise in the larger Clarksville area, likely due to tendencies to live further from the center of the metropolitan area. Furthermore, all demographics tend to travel further distances to exercise on the weekends rather than the weekdays, indicating that travel distance can affect likelihood of agents to travel, especially on weekdays when many agents are in the workforce or participating in schooling.

Advanced low-NO(x) combustors for supersonic high-altitude gas turbines

The impact of gas-turbine-engine-powered aircraft on worldwide pollution was defined within two major areas of contribution. First, the contribution of aircraft to the local air pollution of metropolitan areas and, second, the long-term effects on the chemical balance of the stratosphere of pollutants emitted from future generations of high-altitude, supersonic commercial and military aircraft. Preliminary findings indicate that stratospheric oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions may have to be limited to very low levels if, for example, ozone depletion with concomitant increases in sea-level radiation, are to be avoided. Theoretical considerations suggest that (NOx) levels as low as 1.0 gram per kilogram of fuel and less should be attainable from a idealized premixed type of combustor. Experimental rig studies were intended to explore new combustor concepts designed to minimize the formation of (NOx) in aircraft gas turbines and to define their major operational problems and limitations.

The Ellipso (TM) mobile satellite system

The Ellipso(trademark) Mobile Satellite System is conceived to extend telecommunication services throughout the world to users that are not well, or not at all served by existing mobile or fixed telephone systems. Unlike cellular telephones, Ellipso(trademark) offers fully nationwide service to every served country, thereby providing service to users located anywhere within the national boundaries, no matter how isolated or remote. With Ellipso(trademark), a user in the middle of a wilderness area will have the same mobile telecommunications service as a user in a major metropolitan area. Ellipso(trademark) uses medium earth orbiting (MEO) satellites and an efficient system design to reach its subscribers directly and at a price that is competitive with terrestrial telephone services. The subscriber only requires a clear view of a serving satellite to achieve a connection and to connect to anyone else served by the national telecommunications system. Subscribers within view of two or more satellites will benefit from Ellipso's(trademark) unique satellite diversity processing, using all available satellites simultaneously to optimize circuit quality.

2000 Bay Area Travel Survey

In 2000, the San Fransisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission launched its fifth travel survey effort in the nine-county Bay Area. More than 15,000 households participated. The survey was an activity-based travel survey that collected information on all in-home and out-of-home activities over a two-day period, including weekday and weekend pursuits. Like the 1990 survey, the 2000 Bay Area Travel Survey also included an additional sample of 3,000 households using Bay Area Rapid Transit. Respondents were asked to report detailed information regarding their travel, including trip locations, mode of transportation, trip start and end times, trip purpose, and trip activities. Demographic variables include gender, age, employment status, occupation, income, education level, ethnicity, as well as whether a respondent held a valid driver's license, was a student, and had a disability.

HIRF Tolerance and Avoidance for Advanced Air Mobility Vehicles

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), including Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) vehicles may fly in similar airspace to Transport Category Rotorcraft, thereby requiring meeting the same stringent High-Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF) certification requirements. In a previous effort, a proposed map-based approach protects a vehicle by keeping it away from high power sources at safe distances based on its tolerance level. By designing to a lower tolerance level, significant cost savings can be achieved at the cost of slightly more complex flight planning. However, too low a threshold can result in large avoidance areas, potentially reducing the vehicle operating space. This current effort suggests a minimum threshold for vehicles operating in an urban area. It is derived from analyzing regulatory transmitter data for New York City as a representative metropolitan area. As a result, a vehicle can tolerate common lower-power transmitters by default and only needs to avoid far less common high-power sources. It is also found the existing HIRF requirements may be insufficient against many powerful transmitters such as weather radars and satellite uplink transmitters, and that the map-based approach can address this concern.

Study of aircraft in intraurban transportation systems, San Francisco Bay area

The nine-county San Francisco Bay area is examined in two time periods (1975-1980 and 1985-1990) as a scenario for analyzing the characteristics of an intraurban, commuter-oriented aircraft transportation system. Aircraft have dominated the long-haul passenger market for some time, but efforts to penetrate the very-short-haul intraurban market have met with only token success. Yet, the characteristics of an aircraft transportation system-speed and flexibility-are very much needed to solve the transportation ills of our major urban areas. This study attempts to determine if the aircraft can contribute toward solving the transportation problems of major metropolitan areas and be economically viable in such an environment.

The Potential for Helicopter Passenger Service in Major Urban Areas

An interurban helicopter cost model having the capability of selecting an efficient helicopter network for a given city in terms of service and total operating costs was developed. This model which is based upon the relationship between total and direct operating costs and the number of block hours of helicopter operation is compiled in terms of a computer program which simulates the operation of an intracity helicopter fleet over a given network. When applied to specific urban areas, the model produces results in terms of a break-even air passenger market penetration rate, which is the percent of the air travelers in each of those areas that must patronize the helicopter network to make it break even commercially. A total of twenty major metropolitan areas are analyzed and are ranked initially according to cost per seat mile and then according to break-even penetration rate.

The Washington DC Metro Area Lightning Mapping Array

During the spring and summer of 2006, a network of eight lightning mapping stations has been set up in the greater DC metropolitan area to monitor the total lightning activity in storms over Virginia, Maryland and the Washington DC area. The network is a joint project between New Mexico Tech, NASA, and NOAA/National Weather Service, with real-time data being provided to the NWS for use in their forecast and warning operations. The network utilizes newly available portable stations developed with support from the National Science Foundation. Cooperating institutions involved in hosting mapping stations are Howard University, Montgomery County Community College in Rockville MD, NOAA/NWS's Test and Evaluation Site in Sterling, VA, College of Southern Maryland near La Plata MD, the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, VA, the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, and George Mason University (Prince William Campus) in Manassas, VA. The network is experimental in that its stations a) operate in the upper rather than the lower VHF (TV channel 10, 192-198 MHz) to reduce the radio frequency background noise associated with urban environments, and b) are linked to the central processing site via the internet rather than by dedicated wireless communication links. The central processing is done in Huntsville, AL, and updated observations are sent to the National Weather Service every 2 min. The observational data will also be available on a public website. The higher operating frequency results in a decrease in signal strength estimated to be about 15-20 dB, relative to the LMA networks being operated in northern Alabama and central Oklahoma (which operate on TV channels 5 and 3, respectively). This is offset somewhat by decreased background noise levels at many stations. The receiver threshold levels range from about -95 dBm up to -80 dBm and the peak lightning signals typically extend 15-20 dB above the threshold values. Despite having decreased sensitivity, the network locates lightning in plan position over all of Maryland and Delaware, much of Virginia, and into Southern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. 3-D coverage is provided out to 100-150 km range from the Sterling WFO including the 3 major DC commercial airports (Reagan National, Dulles International, and Baltimore Washington International). The network will eventually consist of 10 or more stations, which will extend and improve its coverage.

An On-Demand Electric Transit Case Study of New Rochelle, New York

This work explores the extent to which an on-demand mobility service utilizing lightweight electric vehicles (EVs) provides community and sustainability benefits in New Rochelle, New York. Travel and survey data from September 2019 through 2023 are used to describe the system and estimate impacts on travelers. The system was found to be used more by women (nearly 60%) and younger demographics (>65% under the age of 42), with peak use in the middle of the day and a grocery store as a top origin and destination. The service is utilized primarily for short trips (86% under 2 miles), and the small, right-sized EVs have carbon dioxide emissions associated with charging the fleet that are roughly one-quarter of the fleet emissions of conventional hybrid vans and nearly 50 times less than a fleet of diesel buses. Mapping current socio-spatial dynamics of travel demand can inform equity performance, as well as assist future planning and service area development and possible extensions to similar smaller, lower-density environments that are nearby and connected to major metropolitan areas. The findings in this case study suggest on-demand electric transit may be a significant and growing space for advancing clean and highly valued public mobility services. Sustainable public transport interventions that consider right-sized, electric, on-demand vehicles can help achieve improved accessibility and reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. This work was presented at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2025 Annual Meeting on January 7, 2025.

Urban land use classification using synthetic aperture radar

In the cases of such land uses as the commercial and industrial, the incorporation of microwave data to that available from the visible and near visible regions may increase classification accuracy, provided that the limitations inherent in radar data are taken into consideration. Attention is presently given to several approaches to the use of radar data in land use classification of urban and near urban areas, with emphasis on L-band horizontal transmit and horizontal receive data available from Seasat-A. The Los Angeles, CA metropolitan area provides the geographic focus for this study.

Environmental change pattern in central Japan as revealed by LANDSAT data

The author has identified the following significant results. A patched cirrus reported by weather stations was hardly recognizable by the eye in LANDSAT MSS data of a three year time lapse. The cloud cover affected radiance values significantly in band 4, while its effect was minimal in bands 6 and 7 (near infrared spectra). The cross correlation coefficient analysis between the two images indicated that the highest value obtained in central Japan was 0.963 for the area where little change occurred in land use over the three period. An analysis of land use in Nagoya showed little change in the metropolitan area while a fairly large change occurred in the northern periphery of the city where large scale housing projects are located.
