Vortex conception of rotor and mutual effect of screw/propellers

A vortex theory of screw/propellers with variable circulation according to the blade and its azimuth is proposed, the problem is formulated and circulation is expanded in a Fourier series. Equations are given for inductive velocities in space for crews, including those with an infinitely large number of blades and expansion of the inductive velocity by blade azimuth of a second screw. Multiparameter improper integrals are given as a combination of elliptical integrals and elementary functions, and it is shown how to reduce elliptical integrals of the third kind with a complex parameter to integrals with a real parameter.

Mutual downwash interference effects on the normal force and roll driving coefficients of multi-stage rockets

For several years, the TAD2 computer program has been used to calculate the aerodynamic properties of sounding rockets. This program was limited, however, in that a maximum of two fin sets could be accommodated analytically. In addition, the roll moment coefficients did not consider downwash effects. Techniques are developed and equations derived for the expansion of capability to include three fin sets. The effects of downwash on the roll moment coefficients are also treated analytically for two and three stage rockets.

Photometry of Pluto-Charon mutual events and Hirayama family asteroids

Once every 124 years, nature provides earth-bound astronomers with the opportunity to observe occultation and transit phenomena between Pluto and its satellite, Charon. Ground-based observations of these events will allow precise physical parameters for the Pluto-Charon system to be derived which are unlikely to be improved upon until in situ spacecraft observations are obtained. The proposed program will continue to support photometry observations from McDonald Observatory, a critical location in an international Pluto Campaign network. Knowledge of the diameters, masses, densities, and compositions derived from these observations will augment our understanding of Pluto's origin and its context within the problem of solar system formation. A second task will continue to research the evolutionary processes which have occurred in the asteroid belt by measuring the physical properties of specific Hirayama family members. Photoelectric lightcurve observations of Koronis and Themis family members will be used to investigate the individual catastrophic collision events which formed each family. By comparing these properties with results of laboratory and numerical experiments, the outcomes of catastrophic disruptions and collisional evolution may be more precisely determined.

Mutual exclusion

Almost all computers today operate as part of a network, where they assist people in coordinating actions. Sometimes what appears to be a single computer is actually a network of cooperating computers; e.g., some supercomputers consist of many processors operating in parallel and exchanging synchronization signals. One of the most fundamental requirements in all these systems is that certain operations be indivisible: the steps of one must not be interleaved with the steps of another. Two approaches were designed to implement this requirement, one based on central locks and the other on distributed order tickets. Practicing scientists and engineers need to come to be familiar with these methods.

Effects of oscillatory speed and mutual overlap on the tribological behavior of PTFE and selected PTFE-based self-lubricating composites

The wear reducing actions of bronze, graphic powder and discontinuous glass fiber within a PTFE matrix have been demonstrated in oscillatory contact with stainless steel, at two different amplitudes, over a range of speeds. The secondary effects on the friction of the PTFE have also been investigated. The effects of oscillation amplitude on frictional surface morphology have been observed for these composites. The friction and wear of the unfilled PTFE matrix were both found to increase as speed increased, with wear going through a transition from a low- to high-rate regime. The speed at which this transition occurs increases with decreasing oscillatory amplitude.

Photometry of Pluto-Charon mutual events and Hirayama family asteroids

During 1985 to 1990, nature provided earth bound astronomers with a once-per-century opportunity to observe occultation and transit phenomena between Pluto and its satellite, Charon. Ground based observations of these events are now being used to derive physical parameters for the Pluto-Charon system to a precision that is unlikely to be improved upon until in situ spacecraft observations are obtained. This program supports analysis of photometry observations from McDonald Observatory, a critical location in the International Pluto Campaign network. Knowledge of the diameters, masses, densities, and compositions derived from these observations will augment the understanding of Pluto's origin and its context within the problem of solar system formation.

Geometric-optical bidirectional reflectance modeling of the discrete crown vegetation canopy - Effect of crown shape and mutual shadowing

Many natural vegetation covers can be regarded as assemblages of plant crowns, on a background, which interact with light as discrete objects. On this basis, geometric optics furnish an approach to the modeling of vegetation canopies that captures the most important features of such growths' bidirectional measurements. Attention is presently given to models which approximate these phenomena and relate the size, shape, and count density of plant crowns to viewing and illumination positions and to crown-background reflectance contrasts.

Albedo maps of Pluto and Charon - Initial mutual event results

By applying the technique of maximum entropy image reconstruction to invert observed lightcurves, surface maps of single-scattering albedo are obtained for the surfaces of Pluto and Charon from 1954 to 1986. The albedo features of the surface of Pluto are similar to those of the Buie and Tholen (1989) spot model maps; a south polar cap is evident. The map of Charon is somewhat darker, with single-scattering albedos as low as 0.03.

Comparative mapping of Pluto's sub-Charon hemisphere - Three least squares models based on mutual event lightcurves

Observations of Charon transits are used here to derive preliminary maps of Pluto's sub-Charon hemisphere. Three models are used to describe the brightness of Pluto's surface as functions of latitude and longitude. Mapping results are presented using spherical harmonic functions, polynomial functions, and finite elements. A smoothing algorithm applied to the maps is described and the validity and resolution of the maps is tested by reconstruction from synthetic data. A preliminary finding from the maps is that the south polar region has the highest albedo of any location on the planet.

Contribution to the mutual interference of wing and propeller

The change of induced wing drag due to the field of flow of the propeller was analyzed quantitatively. The field of flow of the propeller is represented by a uniform distribution of sinks over the propeller disk area, whose strength is determined by the increase in speed in the slipstream. The superposition of this sink flow on the basic flow reproduces the actual field of flow outside of the slipstream with close approximation.

Consortium study of lunar meteorites Yamato-793169 and Asuka-881757: Geochemical evidence of mutual similarity, and dissimilarity versus other mare basalts

Compositions of bulk powders and separated minerals from two meteorites derived from the mare lava plains of the Earth's Moon, Yamato-793169 and Asuka-881757, indicate a remarkable degree of similarity to one another, and clearly favor lunar origin. However, these meteorites are unlike any previously studied lunar rock. In both cases, the bulk-rock TiO2 content is slightly greater than the level separating VLT from low-Ti mare basalt, yet the Sc content is much higher than previously observed except among high-Ti mare basalts. Conceivably, the Sc enrichment in A881757 reflects origin of this rock as a cumulate from a mare magma of 'normal' Sc content, but this seems unlikely. Mineral-separate data suggest that most of the Sc is in pyroxene, and a variety of evidence weighs against the cumulus hypothesis as a major cause for the high Sc. The remarkable similarity between Y793169 and A881757 suggests the possibility that they were derived from a single source crater on the Moon.

Study of the Mutual Interaction Between a Wing Wake and an Encountering Airplane

In an effort to increase airport productivity, several wind-tunnel and flight-test programs are currently underway to determine safe reductions in separation standards between aircraft. These programs are designed to study numerous concepts from the characteristics and detection of wake vortices to the wake-vortex encounter phenomenon. As part of this latter effort, computational tools are being developed and utilized as a means of modeling and verifying wake-vortex hazard encounters. The objective of this study is to assess the ability of PMARC, a low-order potential-flow panel method, to predict the forces and moments imposed on a following business-jet configuration by a vortex interaction. Other issues addressed include the investigation of several wake models and their ability to predict wake shape and trajectory, the validity of the velocity field imposed on the following configuration, modeling techniques and the effect of the high-lift system and the empennage. Comparisons with wind-tunnel data reveal that PMARC predicts the characteristics for the clean wing-body following configuration fairly well. Non-linear effects produced by the addition of the high-lift system and empennage, however, are not so well predicted.

Requirements engineering and program synthesis: Mutually exclusive or synergistic?

There has often been a clash within the formal methods community between early life-cycle proponents such as the requirements engineering community and late life-cycle proponents such as the program synthesis community. This talk will first characterize these positions and their underlying assumptions, and then expose a common set of problems and approaches. The talk will then propose an integrated life-cycle framework, and expound on its potential benefits. Technical challenges to achieving this integrated life-cycle framework will be described, as well as some preliminary work towards that goal.
