Electron Redistributed S-Doped Nickel Iron Phosphides Derived from One-Step Phosphatization of MOFs for Significantly Boosting Electrochemical Water Splitting

Nonprecious transition metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most promising precursors for developing electrocatalysts with high porosity and structural rigidity. This study reports the synthesis of high efficiency electrocatalysts based on S-doped NiFeP. MOF-derived S-doped NiFeP structure is synthesized by a one-step phosphorization process with using S-doped MOFs as the precursor, which is more convenient and environment friendly, and also helps retain the samples’ framework. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of the NiFeP catalysts can be improved after partially replacing P by S due to the tunable electronic structure. The optimized CCS-NiFeP-10 reaches a current density of 10 mA cm –2 for OER with an overpotential of 201 mV and outperforms most NiFe-based catalysts. The S doping plays an important role in tuning the ΔG values for intermediates formation in Ni atoms to a suitable value and exhibits a pronouncedly improved the OER performance. CCS-NiFeP-20 sample presents excellent HER performance due to the d-band center downshifting from the Fermi level. When the voltage of the electrolytic cell is 1.50 V, a current density of 10 mA cm –2 can be obtained. This strategy paves the way for designing highly active none-noble metal catalysts.

Colossal Magnetoresistance without Mixed Valence in a Layered Phosphide Crystal

Materials with strong magnetoresistive responses are the backbone of spintronic technology, magnetic sensors, and hard drives. Among them, manganese oxides with a mixed valence and a cubic perovskite structure stand out due to their colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). A double exchange interaction underlies the CMR in manganates, whereby charge transport is enhanced when the spins on neighboring Mn 3+ and Mn 4+ ions are parallel. Prior efforts to find different materials or mechanisms for CMR resulted in a much smaller effect. Here an enormous CMR at low temperatures in EuCd 2 P 2 without manganese, oxygen, mixed valence, or cubic perovskite structure is shown. EuCd 2 P 2 has a layered trigonal lattice and exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at 11 K. The magnitude of CMR (10(4)%) in as-grown crystals of EuCd 2 P 2 rivals the magnitude in optimized thin films of manganates. In this work, the magnetization, transport, and synchrotron X-ray data suggest that strong magnetic fluctuations are responsible for this phenomenon. The realization of CMR at low temperatures without heterovalency leads to a new regime for materials and technologies related to antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Covalent Functionalization of Nickel Phosphide Nanocrystals with Aryl-Diazonium Salts

Covalent functionalization of Ni 2 P nanocrystals was demonstrated using aryl-diazonium salts. Spontaneous adsorption of aryl functional groups was observed, with surface coverages ranging from 20 to 96% depending on the native reactivity of the salt as determined by the aryl substitution pattern. Increased coverage was possible for low reactivity species using a sacrificial reductant. Functionalization was confirmed using thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The structure and energetics of this nanocrystal electrocatalyst system, as a function of ligand coverage, were explored with density functional theory calculations. The Hammett parameter of the surface functional group was found to linearly correlate with the change in Ni and P core-electron binding energies and the nanocrystal's experimentally and computationally determined work function. The electrocatalytic activity and stability of the functionalized nanocrystals for hydrogen evolution were also improved when compared to the unfunctionalized material, but a simple trend based on electrostatics was not evident. Density functional theory was used to understand this discrepancy, revealing that H adsorption energies on the covalently functionalized Ni 2 P also do not follow the electrostatic trend and are predictive descriptors of the experimental results.
