Photodissociation of CO2 into CO plus O/1D/
It is shown that the photodissociation of CO2(1Sigma/g/plus) into CO(X1Sigma/plus/) plus O(1D) with a quantum yield of unity is consistent with all known data on the CO2 ultraviolet absorption band between 1675 and 1400 A. Astrophysical data from the atmospheres of Mars and Venus are not inconsistent with this interpretation and cometary data seem to support it.
