A Method to Preserve Wetland Roots and Rhizospheres for Elemental Imaging

Roots extensively interact with their soil environment but visualizing such interactions between roots and the surrounding rhizosphere is challenging. The rhizosphere chemistry of wetland plants is particularly challenging to capture because of steep oxygen gradients from the roots to the bulk soil. Here a protocol is described that effectively preserves root structure and rhizosphere chemistry of wetland plants through slam-freezing and freeze drying. Slam-freezing, where the sample is frozen between copper blocks pre-cooled with liquid nitrogen, minimizes root damage and sample distortion that can occur with flash-freezing while still minimizing chemical speciation changes. While sample distortion is still possible, the ability to obtain multiple samples quickly and with minimal cost increases the potential to obtain satisfactory samples and optimizes imaging time. The data show that this method is successful in preserving reduced arsenic species in rice roots and rhizospheres associated with iron plaques. This method can be adopted for studies of plant-soil relationships in a wide variety of wetland environments that span concentration ranges from trace-element cycling to phytoremediation applications.

Life beyond earth and the mind of man

A symposium is reported on the implications of the possibility of extraterrestrial life for social, philosophical, and humanistic impacts. The viewpoints from astronomers, biologists, physicists, anthropologists, and theologians are given. Costs involved for finding this life are discussed along with the possible benefits to society. The direct implications from radio telescopes, the Pioneer 10 plaque, and discussions between the panelists are also reported.

Fabrication and testing of negative-limited sealed nickel-cadmium cells

The design, construction, and testing of 100,20Ah and 100,3Ah negative-limited sealed cells are reported. The required physical dimensions of the hardware and components necessary to produce 20 and 3 Ah cells were established. The stainless steel cans and covers have been ordered. The covers contain two ceramic seals. The fabrication of electrodes was started. About 55% (879 electrodes) of the required cadmium electrodes has been prepared. About 44% of the porous nickel substrates (plaques) required for the preparation of the nickel oxide electrodes has been completed.

Effects of SMEAT on the oral health of crewmen (DTO 71-2)

The oral health status of three astronauts was monitored before, during and after a 56-day simulation of the Skylab mission. Laboratory and clinical parameters which are considered to be ultimately related to dental impairments were evaluated. The most notable changes were observed in increased counts of mycoplasma and S. mutans, decreased counts of enteric bacilli, decreased saliva flow rates, increased secretory IgA and salivary lysozyme levels, and increased clinical scores of dental plaque, calculus and inflammation.

The Jupiter pioneers

The accomplishments of the Pioneer 10 space probe are described through artist concept drawing and concisely written documentation. Illustrations are provided of the following: (1) photography of planet Jupiter, (2) planet Jupiter magnetic fields, (3) Pioneer 10 configuration with emphasis on signal transmission capability, (4) analysis of the Pioneer 10 trajectory, (5) the characteristics of planet Jupiter and the orbiting moons, and (6) a cross-sectional respresentation of the composition of the planet Jupiter. The plaque which is carried by the Pioneer 10 to indicate earth civilization by astronomical symbols, binary numbers, and drawings is shown.

Nickel-cadmium cells

A high energy density nickel cadmium cell of aerospace quality was designed. The approach used was to utilize manufacturing techniques which produce highly uniform and controlled starting materials in addition to improvements in the overall design. Parameters controlling the production of plaque and both positive and negative plate were studied. Quantities of these materials were produced and prototype cells were assembled to test the proposed design.

Long-range communications with Pioneer 10 at Jupiter

The longest two-way telecommunications link ever established connected Pioneer 10 with its controllers and experimenters on earth during the first Jovian encounter. This radio link, operating in the 2.1 and 2.3 gigahertz frequency bands, maintained high-quality communications over a distance of 5-1/2 astronomical units. The data collected by eleven on-board advanced scientific instruments were transmitted to the investigators, providing a new wealth of information about the largest planet of the solar system. A descriptive review is presented of the spacecraft design and the ground data system configuration with an analysis of the telecommunications downlink. Pioneer 10, aided by Jupiter's gravitational field, is the first spacecraft to leave the solar system. A plaque attached to the spacecraft represents man's first attempt to send a message to another intelligence within our galaxy.

The recognition of extraterrestrial intelligence

The departure from radiative equilibrium - represented by radio, television and radar technology - in the microwave spectrum of the earth is easily detectable over interstellar distances. Even with a technology no more advanced than our own, a civilization on a planet of a nearby star could easily determine, by auto-correlation techniques, the artificiality of these radio signals. Possible message contents for interstellar discourse of a modulated signal at any accessible frequency include (1) m-dimensional imagery represented by the transmission of numbers which are the products of m prime numbers; and (2) the use of a common mathematics, physics or astronomy to convey a range of information on more difficult subjects. The only direct attempts to date to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligence - the plaques aboard the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft - are discussed briefly.

Review of electrochemical impregnation for nickel cadmium cells

A method of loading active material within the electrodes of nickel cadmium cells is examined. The basic process of electrochemical impregnation of these electrodes is detailed, citing the principle that when current is applied reactions occur which remove hydrogen ions from solution, making the interior of the plaque less acidic. Electrodes result which are superior in energy density, stability, and life. The technology is reviewed and illustrated with typical performance data. Recommendations are made for additional research and development.
